Dear Parishioners,

“Tis

is My Chosen Son; listen to Him.” (Luke 9:35)

Here on this mountain of the Transfguration we hear echoes of the words from the Baptism of Jesus, “Tis is my Beloved Son,” as Jesus is “changed.” Moses and Elijah appear in glory to show that Jesus is the fulfllment of the promises of old. He has come from the Father’s Word and because of this, He takes on the mantle of all the Father promises. It becomes clear that Jesus is the One sent from the Father; He speaks the Father’s will. If Jesus speaks the will of the Father, then we know that we are bound to not just hear His words, but to take them to ourselves.

Lent is the journey that invites us to come to know Jesus. It becomes our journey to the mountaintop. Encountering the face and presence of Jesus certainly will mean change, of course, but the change is given that we may come to know this Jesus more deeply and to embrace His call for our lives. Tis journey will mean leaving behind some preconceived notions or understanding of who Jesus is. Tis, of course, is difcult and may, at times, be our biggest challenge. We are comfortable with what we know and what we may have been taught as children. While many of those ideas might be helpful, they also may be the unconscious walls that keep us from truly knowing Jesus. Like St. Peter, who wanted to build permanent altars on the mountain – to remain on that mountain to experience and retain the expression of Jesus that is revealed – Jesus reminds Him and us that we must be willing to travel to places that leave behind the comfortable expressions in order to seek out the truth of Jesus.

Change is never easy, as we know, but necessary for a life that we want to be rooted in Jesus. As St. Paul says, “Remain faithful to the Lord.” So read the Scriptures and do not be afraid of what you may encounter if you come upon another image or understanding of Jesus. Who knows ... He may have something wonderful in store for you!

A reminder that some wonderful ways to celebrate Lent are to consider attending daily Mass, Stations of the Cross, going to confession, and acts of charity. Don’t let the time go by without deepening your relationship with Jesus. What a great gift for Him and each of us we can present at Easter.

Tis past Sunday, we sent one of our parishioners seeking Baptism at Easter to the Bishop for the Rite of Election. Tis is the formal acceptance of those wishing to be baptized and received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Our R.C.I. A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) team has been working with them in teaching and faith formation so they may become members of the Catholic Community. On certain Sunday’s, they will participate in what are called the Scrutinies at the 10:30 AM Mass. Tese are moments of prayer and blessing that prepare the candidates for the Easter Sacraments. I ask that you keep them in your prayers and may their dedication renew our own commitment to the Faith. I would like to thank Fr. Anthony and the entire R.C.I.A. team for their hard work and dedication.

Stations of the Cross are prayed each Friday at 7:00 PM in the Church.

In Jesus, our Crucifed Lord, Fr. Bob

Lent is a call not just to “give up something” but more important to “give something for the poor.” Wherever you live in the parish, there are poor families within walking distance of your home. When in need, they ring the rectory bell. Tey are, in efect, ringing your doorbell. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St.Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the sufering and poor.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

Come, My Light

Come, my Light, and illumine my darkness. Come, my Life, and revive me from death. Come, my Physician, and heal my wounds.

Come, Flame of divine love, and burn up the thorns of my sins, kindling my heart with the fame of thy love. - Dimitrii of Rostov

From the Beginning of Time

Jesus, you have known us from the beginning of time, you have known us in the depths of our dreams and in the darkness of our shame, you know us as your beloved.

Help us to own that core identity more and more in this season of repentance and mercy. Give us the rock-solid assurance of your unwavering faith in us as we seek the same in you. Amen.

Fasting During the Lenten Season

As we begin the Lenten Season lets pause and refect on where we want to be in 40 days

Let us pray that as we begin the season of lent we embrace the opportunity to:

Fast from hurting words and say kind words.

Fast from sadness and be flled with gratitude.

Fast from anger and be flled with patience.

Fast from pessimism and be flled with hope.

Fast from worries and have trust in God.

Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.

Fast from pressures and be prayerful.

Fast from bitterness and fll our hearts with joy.

Fast from selfshness and be compassionate to others.

Fast from grudges and be reconciled.

Fast from words and be silent so we can listen.

We pray that our only desire and our one choice is to choose what better leads to the deepening of God’s life in us.

We ask the lord to guide our decisions today and to bless us with His peace, His joy, His love.

Respect Life Ministry

Catholic Considerations for Our Earthly Passing

Read the full version at respectlife.org/ end-of-life-considerations..

We prepare for eternal life by choosing to love and follow God. Our journey with Christ includes equipping our consciences to make morally good judgments at the end of life. While no summary can substitute for thorough catechesis, one thing is clear: we are entrusted by God with the gift of life. This obliges us to make use of appropriate, effective medical care. The Church affirms the inviolable dignity of every person, regardless of the duration or extent of the person’s incapacity. Nothing diminishes the sanctity of a person’s life, or the obligation to protect and care for it. Those who are sick should not be alone and, even after death, accompaniment continues by praying for those who have passed.

We are entrusted by God with the gift of life
