Talking about freedom: the past two years have shown us a new aspect. The freedom to choose your workplace in many professional fields.

Remote work/smart work has become entrenched in our working world in so many ways, at least in many industries. One way is to move one‘s office on board - and combine work and sailing pleasure from all the places we used to know only from our holidays. In this issue, we focus on someone who has done just that. In an indepth interview, Sanni tells us about life and work on board, and what to look out for when successfully working with clients in Europe while enjoying the view of a bay in French Polynesia. And you do not have to be there alone: we also have some helpful advice on what to take care of if you are in the company of your pet whilst discovering the ocean, and will introduce to you some of social medias most popular sailing cats and dogs.

The world My workspace Tahiti‘s little sister. But at the moment you can not see much of that. It is just before midnight and most of the lights on land have already been turned off. So now I am sitting in the cockpit and can only hear the dogs howling through the silence from time to time.

Are you staying on your own sailing yacht?

The boat I call home right now is not mine. Currently I am looking after the sailing yacht of my friends who have flown home for a few months as a „boat sitter“. Since boats need humans more than humans need boats, I will be living on this old 60-foot racer from 1974 and keep all systems running until they return.

After graduating from high school, she studied graphic and communication design in Hamburg and business communication management in Berlin. In August 2019, she threw all her doubts overboard and took the plunge into a new life - at sea. We talked to her - about her life on board, modern working environments and the office with a sea view.

Where are you right now? What is the view from your workplace like?

Right now I am anchored in one of the most beautiful bays in French Polynesia, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The island of Mo‘orea is often called

How did you get into sailing?

A very good question and I can not really answer it. In my first studies I won a creative competition, which was announced by a non-profit organization. The prize was a weekend on an old flat water wooden sailboat on the Schlei near Flensburg. At the end of the two days, while the sun was already low, I sat on the bowsprit and carefully folded the headsails. At that moment I was the happiest person in the world. An unforgettable moment for me and years later I decided to get a sailing license on the Havel by

story, I would have thought it was an entertaining, maybe even romanticized fairy tale. Only the idea of crossing the Atlantic is crazy enough and it seemed like that to me - until the moment I spotted Barbados on the horizon. There I could not believe how lucky I am. In general, many tears of joy flowed during the trip. But was it luck that made my dream come true? Also probably. But most of all it was the decision to find a way with all the ups and downs that accompany you on such a journey. In the end, you always have to stand up once more than you fall.

From the beginning, I shared my journey on Instagram because it was easier to bring friends and family along with my journey. More and more people joined and someone wrote to me to enjoy the way there because the way back would not be that nice. At that moment I looked at the Pacific Ocean and started to sail further west.

How do you earn your living and what is your profession?

In the first two years after my departure from Germany, I lived on my savings. Since I exchanged accommodation, transport, adventures, and often food onboard for my work, they lasted (to my own astonishment) longer than I thought. But then came the point where I had to decide: buying a

After paying off my student loan, I saved up for my dream vacation: a week of bunk charter between Sardinia and Corsica. In the end, the vacation was so perfect that I actually did not want to sail anymore, because I was afraid that sailing would lose its magic afterward.

When did you decide to live your life on the water?

After all, I sailed again in 2019. But just because I was promised that the ocean is even more beautiful than the Mediterranean. The Atlantic - a round trip around Lanzarote, Canary Islands - and just like that, I had fallen head over heels in love with the deep blue and was full of sadness that the week had passed so quickly. Then on the plane I saw the documentary „Chasing Coral“. The message: rising ocean temperatures are causing mass coral die-offs. The entire life in the reef is being deprived of its protective space and thus the whole ecosystem is in danger. A mass extinction you can not notice because it takes place under the water surface.

And then it clicked: If I want to discover a species-rich ocean, today is a better day than tomorrow. I do not have any more time to wait for retirement, because then there might be nothing left to discover. Right on the following Monday, I registered for a new vacation for maneuver training in

Have you already noticed some disadvantages?

There are not many disadvantages. The only thing I think is that it is often too hot to work. Because of that I put my rhythm in the cooler hours of the day. But you can not really call that a disadvantage.

How has the pandemic played into your cards? Has it become easier to work „remotely“? Is there more acceptance?

I have no comparison in my self-employment to the time before the pandemic. For my clients, one of the biggest advantages of working remotely around the globe is the time difference and the resulting speed in completing projects. However, I believe that the willingness to bring a full remote into the team has increased as many industries have had to switch to the home office.

One is electricity: depending on the boat and setup, the availability of electricity onboard varies. Solar power is often the most pleasant solution, as there is no noise, unlike the engine, generator and wind generator.

The other is the Internet connection: a hotspot with the phone is at least often better than the wifi in the nearest cafe. But here are some tips that can solve this problem: Often you can see the transmission mast when entering the anchorage and you can try to drop the anchor directly in front of it. If you can not get close enough, either a WiFi antenna in the mast or a mobile router that is pulled up the mast in a dry bag can help.

What is really important for you? Is there anything limiting you have to consider in your choice of destinations?

Of course, working on a boat is always a compromise with traveling alone on a boat. That is why I spent the last few months boatsitting and hardly traveled around. However, when I have changed locations, I have tried to find out as much as I can about the network at the destination and have sailed on my days off from work.

SAFETY ONBOARD Whether your pet can swim or not, they must be always safe on the boat. There are life jackets available for dogs and cats and wearing one will at least relieve some of the stress of having your pets fall overboard - cats are generally more cautious, so they are more unlikely to fall.

The inside of a boat can be quite slippery for our furry friends. A few carpets here and there can help them to have a better grip when the boat is shaking. A leash could also be a good solution for dogs that tend to be quite unpredictable! You can also put together a small first aid kit in case of an emergency, ask your vet for suggestions. In any case, a well-trained pet is the best control measure for a smooth and relaxed holiday.

You can arrange a toilet spot on the boat by placing a piece of synthetic grass or a litter, and accustom them to the place. However, it might not be easy to train them to go potty in the designated space so make sure you always have doggie bags with you and throw them away as soon as you land.

SEASICKNESS AND SUNSTROKES Seasickness can be a serious problem for your pet but you can only find out once you’ve set sail. There are many drugs for pets that prevent motion sickness, so a visit to the vet before the departure can help you understand the best solution and dosage for your friend.

Although pets won’t overexpose themselves to sun rays, the risk of sunstroke on a boat can be behind the corner. Make sure they have fresh water available at all times as they cool themselves through their tongue.

You can recognize if they’re overheated for the uncontrollable panting: if this happens, use cooling pads or wet towels to relieve the heat. If you wish, you can have a little pool where your pet can take a bath from time TOILET

Greek stuffed eggplants Preparation time: 45 minutes 6-8 Servings The 26-year-old Greek Niki Christidi Roemmer works as a hostess on yachts and has put together for us the recipe „Stuffed eggplants“ that will provide a Greek taste experience on board.

Ingredients

• 4 eggplants • 500 g (beef) minced meat • 400 g canned tomatoes • 200 g feta • 1 green bell pepper • 1 onion • 1 clove of garlic • arugula • 50g red or white wine • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 1 tablespoon thyme • one vegetable stock cube • 200 g water • olive oil • oregano • salt • pepper

Preparation

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C hot air.

2. Cut the eggplants lengthwise and score their flesh crosswise with a knife.

3. Place the eggplants in a baking dish lined with baking paper and add 4-5 tablespoons of olive oil, as well as salt and pepper.

4. Leave the eggplant cut side down in the oven for 25-30 minutes.

5. Meanwhile, in a pan, heat the olive oil, finely chopped onion, garlic clove and bell bell pepper, thyme and 1 tsp oregano.

6. Add the meat and fry for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

7. Mix in the tomato paste and deglaze everything with wine.

8. Let everything simmer together with the canned tomatoes, the water and the vegetable stock cube for 15-20 minutes at low heat until all the liquid has evaporated.

9. Hollow out the eggplants and fill them with the prepared filling from the pan.

Then sprinkle everything with feta and serve together with olive oil, arugula, pepper and oregano.

Dolphins were and are part of people‘s lives at and with the sea. A part that has unfortunately become smaller and smaller in the past decades. Encounters on the coasts from Spain to Greece have become increasingly rare. Marine mammals - including whales - are in retreat in the Mediterranean, and the reasons and dangers are manifold: intensive fishing, environmental pollution of the habitat, noise and collisions due to increasing shipping traffic and, last but not least, climate change.

Especially among sailors, orcas have made the headlines again and again in recent years, showing unusual behaviour and attacking sailboats. The animals mainly target the rudder. It is not clear whether this is due to playfulness, hunting exercises or even the consequences of the pandemic and the accompanying relative calm at sea, to which the animals had become accustomed and which is now being interrupted again.

easickness can affect any sailor - no matter how often you have been and are on the water without any problems. The symptoms range from frequent yawning to dizziness and severe vomiting. This can make you miss the fun of the most beautiful time of the year on the water, and your passion for sailing grows manageably. But what is the actual cause? The cause of seasickness is a condition of our brain. If the eyes deliver different information than the organ of balance in the ear or the muscles and joints, the body reacts in a correspondingly confused way and produces stress hormones, such as histamine.

This is not a new phenomenon of course - ever since the early days of seafaring, a wide variety of home remedies and tricks have been developed to alleviate seasickness and its symptoms. You don‘t always have to take hard drugs, which often make you tired or cause other side effects in the body. Why not experiment with home remedies first, which may not always work for everyone, but at least for some of those who suffer.

Ginger

Ginger has long been a proven household remedy to inhibit nausea - and is therefore particularly helpful in severe cases of seasickness. However, it is best consumed as a preventive measure before the first symptoms appear. The form does not matter: whether in tea, raw in fine slices or as a powder in capsules, the effect remains almost the same.

Vitamin C

The cause of seasickness is thought to be histamines, messenger substances of the nervous system, which are produced more by the body during seasickness due to stress. Another approach to avoid seasickness is therefore to reduce histamine levels - for example, by consuming high doses of vitamin C, whether from foods such as citrus fruits or other sources, preferably before the first symptoms appear. Avoiding foods that contain histamine is also beneficial. These include red wine, smoked meats, salami, ham, fish, seafood, hard cheeses, sauerkraut, pickled vegetables, beer, yeast and vinegar. If you are susceptible, it is better to avoid these.

Homeopathy

Although the effect of homeopathic remedies is medically controversial, some hit by seasickness report their effectiveness against. Cocculus LM12, Tabacum LM12, Vomitus Heel, Vertigo Heel and Nux Vomica, among others, are said to provide relief and also alleviate acute symptoms. Whether this is based on the placebo effect or an actual medical effect remains to be seen - the main thing is that it helps!

Plugging an ear

It sounds crazy, but it really helps some people: It is reported that seasickness does not occur if one (!) of the two ears is plugged with an earplug. This makes the brain believe that there is a problem with the hearing, and for this reason the opposing sensory impressions are blocked out. Since the brain is primarily occupied with the different ear signals, the confusing signals are not processed, there is no stress, no histamine and consequently no seasickness - so the theory goes. None of us have tried this trick ourselves yet, but many a sea dog swears by it!

Horizon may helpy

Last but not least, it has to be said that the psyche also plays an important role in seasickness. If you only mentally deal with the danger of nausea during the entire cruise, you will probably actually feel bad. That‘s why some distraction is good here: the famous look at the horizon or taking on a meaningful task on deck the main thing is that your thoughts don‘t only revolve around seasickness. Sleep is also helpful in alleviating the first symptoms. If you sleep, you won‘t suffer from nausea, and for the rest of the time: just try to stay loose and relaxed.

Day 3 - Vathy, Ithaca We set sail to our next destination, the gorgeous Vathy Port on the mythical Ithaca Island. The ride is about 2.5 hours but during the trip, you will skirt most of Itacha’s northern coasts and encounter many beautiful bays and coves along the way. We recommend stopping at the real gem of the island, Afales Beach, a bay with turquoise waters and wild vegetation all around.

Vathi Port is a small and idyllic harbor located in a natural bay protected by all winds in the central-east part of the island. The lovely town is filled with historical buildings and churches that we suggest visiting before spending the night in the port.

Day 1 - Lefkada Town to Sivota We start our itinerary in Lefkada Town, where the majority of charter companies are located. We immediately set sail to our first stop, the beautiful bay of Sivota, which is about 17 N.M or 3 hours distance from the capital town: during this journey, you will find many islets scattered along the coasts of Lefkas that are well worth a visit. We suggest making a quick swimming stop nearby the enchanting Onassis Island, a private island owned by the homonymous Greek billionaires family.

As soon as you reach Sivota Bay, you will be amazed by the presence of such wild nature that covers the hills surrounding the area. Sivota is definitely one of the main touristic places of Lefkada, a quiet bay during the day and a lively neighborhood at night: it is known for having some of the best beaches on the islands, with turquoise waters and white sand, framed by wild nature and all accessible by boat. Moor at the small port to spend the night and enjoy some fresh food at the local tavernas.

Day 4 - Kastos Kastos is the fourth stop of our itinerary around the Ionian islands. A long journey of 3 hours awaits us before reaching it from Vathy Port, so we suggest leaving early in the morning to enjoy the day to the fullest. Along with Kalamos, Kastos is a virgin island with plenty of vegetation and beautiful waters, as well as a small population that is famous for its hospitality. The land is filled with olive trees and vineyards, while the coasts are rich in beautiful beaches and coves, such as Ampelakia Beach.

In the north of Croatia, with Istria and the Kvarner Bay, a lot of highly attractive places are waiting to be discovered by sailing yacht. We have put together a small trip recommendation.

Day 1 - Cape Kamenjak Depending on when and where you start, where you are checked in and what the weather is doing, we recommend a short detour to Cape Karmenjak, if you chose one of the many starting points in the south of Istria.

Cape Kamenjak is the southernmost point of the peninsula, a nature park with many bays such as Mali or Portic.

Here, depending on the wind, you can of course anchor excellently. But Pula e.g. is also worth a visit for those who want to start the next day.

Day 2 - Island of Susak or Mali Losinj The next destination has something special in store: Susak is one of the few (inhabited) islands in Croatia that has sand coastal lines instead of rock. The island, which is only 3 km² in size, has some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Croatia. Despite a wave of emigration 52

in the 60s, it is still inhabited today, and tourism plays a major role here.

Cars are forbidden there, and a feeling of deceleration quickly sets in.

When the excursion boats disappear in the evening, it becomes even quieter. Buoy fields offer sheltered anchorages unless there is a bora.

In this case, the bay of Mali Losinj, which is a little deeper, offers a well-protected and safe berth.

Mali Losinj, rich in flowers and pine trees and in the past an important maritime and trading centre, has now developed into one of the most popular holiday resorts in the Kvarner Bay. Besides the small town with its beautiful and winding alleys and side streets, you will also find beautiful bays and great restaurants.

Day 5 - KrK Island Heading north-east, a very special highlight awaits: Krk. The harbour and the Riva promenade separate modern Krk from the historical part of the town. Via the Riva, the waterfront promenade, you walk through the medieval city gate into the city centre with its historic core, surrounded by a city wall. Life on the island has been pulsating here for around 2000 years. Today, shops and boutiques invite you to take a stroll, cafés and restaurants offer places to relax and enjoy. There are also plenty of beaches around the island.

Day 3 - Ilovik and Sveti Petar Ilovik (also known as the Island of Flowers because of its lush vegetation) and Sveti Petar are located off the island of Losinj. Ilovik owes its nickname to the splendour of flowers in the front gardens of the few houses. On Sveti Petar, separated only by a channel about 2 km long and 300 m wide, you will find, among other things, the ruins of a Venetian fortress.

Day 6 - Island of Cres A long sailing day brings us to Cres. The town of the same name in the north-east of the island is an idyllic place with town houses, beautifully painted facades and a romantic centre with narrow streets. Cafés and restaurants. Day 7 - Palermo We head back to our starting point by sailing along the coasts between Mondello and Palermo, and making a stop in Addaura, a beautiful fishermen town with a port that can be easily visited in a few hours. Be sure to line up your flights such that you can arrive the day before your charter and sleep on the boat, so you don’t have to spend money on hotels. Buy the optional WiFi package on your charter so you can check the weather frequently, stay in touch with loved ones, or even watch movies if you have some downtime. And if you’re the captain, don’t forget your sailing-certification paperwork; you won’t be allowed to leave the port without it.

I had sailed out of Zadar a number of times already but always with Croatian friends; last fall I decided to charter my own bareboat and bring my girlfriend and our best friends along. Thanks to Sailogy I was able to browse hundreds of available sailing yachts in the area. We eventually settled on a new Bavaria 34 cruiser owned by a small charter company in Zadar. SAILING IN TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS: A Winter Escape

I’m Marc, I’m 31 and I’m from Ireland. In January 2022, two friends - Colin & Imelda - and I chartered an Oceanis 37 with Sailogy in Tenerife, in order to escape a cold and wet Dublin for some winter sun and heat.

Do you have any advice to give to those who are considering a sailing holiday for the first time?

Well firstly, I’d obviously say book it! But on a more serious note, I would say preparation is key. Read up on the area you plan to charter in, look at what marinas and anchorages there are, and with the input of your crew, decide where you’d really like to visit during the course of your trip.

Don’t get too hung up on having a strict itinerary though, as winds will ultimately determine where you should go, but the pre-planning will help you make the right decisions on the day. Finally, if you’re anything like me, you will want to relax on your holiday. Not every day needs to be a long passage, and perhaps you’ll decide to enjoy what onshore has to offer and remain two days or more in one location. I find a mix of passages, coastal hopping, and a longer stay or two, to be the perfect mix for me.

My Catamarans Cup Experience

quickly found - and so was the catamaran. It was to be the Lagoon 42. A good choice for eight people - she is more spacious than her predecessors of the same size. Unfortunately, also slower - but we were to learn that later.

Departure The journey to Athens is relaxed as usual. Many direct flights and a short 35-minute transfer to the Marina Alimos and there you are. You are welcomed by the ISTION Yachting team. There are cool drinks, good music and many smiling faces. We were quickly able to check

Get together - the prelude In the evening we are all taken by coach to the opening party 10 minutes away. There is a rich buffet, and each team sits at a big round table. After the meal, everyone is called up on stage one by one to introduce themselves and their crew. With more than 30 crews, it takes a while, but there is certainly no chance of boredom. The foundation for a week of fun is laid here. The first team-

building measure, so to speak. It works for our crew. Then it‘s back to the ship - a gin and tonic in the cockpit for malaria prophylaxis and off to bed.

The race The skippers‘ briefing starts at 09:00 and the race starts immediately afterwards. The start is at 11:00 a.m. at the height of Aegina, a RIB and the supporting yacht form the starting line. Everything is well explained and well described in the handout. Slowly, the race fever spreads among the crew. With a tail wind of 3 to 4 bft, we sail leisurely down to Poros. After crossing the finish line, we hoist the sails, stop the boat and enjoy one of the last bathing stops in 2017. With an outside temperature of 24 degrees and only slightly lower water temperatures, a real highlight!

The back story In 2014 I went to the Catamarans Cup for the first time. A whole new world for me - on two hulls. Greece was not exactly a familiar territory for me either. We took part on a Lagoon 400 - the TV team of a regional channel and the casting winners, with 23 other catamarans out in the Saronic Gulf. For one unforgettable week we went down to the Argolic Gulf to Monemvasia. It was a great time, I had caught the virus. No, not that one. It was 40-degree catamaran sailing fever. I was not used to so much space, so much comfort. My first sailing experiences had been on owner boats. With only one hull. So everything was really new for me.

But at the end of the week, it was clear to us: we have to go there again.

Because we had an incredible amount of fun.

Catamarans Cup 2017 Now it was time again. It was already decided in January: The Catamarans Cup was to be this year‘s personal season finale. The crew was 64

off! Challenge accepted: Cooking is on the agenda. You prepare a table full of delicacies, then go from table to table and taste the delicacies of the other crews. And there are plenty of them. From Spanish tortilla, soljanka, suckling pig, mulled wine and biscuits to us. White sausages with pumpernickel and sweet mustard. Accompanied by „handmade“ potato dumplings with red cabbage. Bavarian - Franconian all-round. To quench the thirst, a wheat beer and everything rounded off with a good shot of Penninger Blutwurz Black at 50% vol. Even the Russian crews found it delicious.

The evening in Poros ends with other crews in the local trendy bar, where we get to experience a real Zeibekiko as the highlight. Greece @it‘s best.

Hydra: (Shipbuilding) Art and the Donkey - Express Thursday is free sailing day - and we decide to make a detour to Hydra.

One of my personal highlight islands: once a centre of Greek shipbuilding, today an island with a lot of art and culture - and without cars. The donkey is the means of transport of choice here. We are lucky, by the way: as we left quickly, we still managed to get a great berth in the not too big, but very popular harbour. A bit of sightseeing and dinner in a rustic taverna round off the whole experience. That‘s the way it has to be before we head back to Athens the next day.

Next stop: Porto Heli The next regatta stop is directly to Porto Heli, a sheltered bay with harbour at the entrance to the Argolic Gulf. After a short walk to the hotel, another extensive buffet awaits us, followed by the next competition Show Off! is the motto of the evening. Present a 4-to-5-minute show in front of all participants. The motto: clowns and circus. We have already dealt with the topic at home and prepared a small film, which we will support with current pictures from the first three days. But unfortunately, we can‘t hold our own against all the amateur magicians, variety shows and elaborate choreographies, especially those of our Eastern European competitors. Anyway, the fun we had during the shooting and with the final product makes us bear it.
