The long awaited Sing Siam Regatta is finally back after 2 years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s Regatta was hosted by the Royal Thai Navy and we received a great response of 26 sailors (including our Vice Commodore, COL Justiin Ang) and 30 supporters from Singapore. The trip spanned from 24 November to 30 November, with 26 November to 27 November being race days.
All sailors and supporters met at Changi Airport Terminal 2 at 10.00 am to have their attendance taken before proceeding to check-in for their flight to Bangkok. Upon arriving at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, we were greeted by Military personnel who escorted us from immigrations and to the tour buses waiting to bring us to the Royal Thai Navy base in Sattahip.
We arrived at 8.00 pm, in time for the welcome dinner hosted by the Royal Thai Navy. After a long day of travelling, our sailors and supporters got to enjoy their dinner with live performances before checking into their accomodation to rest.

Meeting time for the pick-up to the sailing club was at 10.00 am after breakfast. All sailors and supporters were brought to the sailing club to register for the race as well as to sign out their boats.
The sailors prepared their boats in the morning and had some warm-up on water before lunch. After lunch, the practice race started with the first warning signal at 2.00 pm.
At the end of a long day of practice, dinner was hosted by SAF Yacht Club as a 'thank you' to the hospitality extended to us by our Thai counterparts.
Pick-up was at 8.30 am as the first signal was at 9.30 am for team racing. The Singapore sailors were teamed up with the Thai sailors at random (chosen randomly the day before).

Team Elephant won the team race for both Laser and Optimist Class.
Just before lunch, the tour bus brought the other sailors to the sailing club for them to prepare for the match race in the afternoon.
However, an unexpected downpour came after lunch which caused the wind to drop significantly. The first warning signal for the race was at 1.30 pm. The race committee managed to only run a total number of 3 races for the fleet race due to the light wind conditions. Sailors were tested by sighting for wind patches and executing perfect roll tacks going upwind. Nonetheless, the last boat arrived to shore with a beautiful sunset view.

The last day of race tested the sailors’ endurance and patience in terms of a passage race with light air. Sailors have to navigate around 2 islands before arriving back to shore. The first warning signal was at 10.00 am, and sailors finished the race approximately 3 hours later.
The prize giving ceremony and thank you dinner was hosted by The Royal Thai Navy. At the dinner, the Singapore team presented tokens of appreciation and gifts to both Royal Thai Navy and Thai sailors.
The night ended with a party and karaoke.
The bus arrived at 10.00 am to pick us up after checking out from our accommodation, and we were brought to the Sea Turtle Conservation Center, Royal Thai Navy.
At the Sea Turtle Conservation Center, we were able to take a physical look at the baby sea turtles in the holding tanks and were given a short presentation about sea turtles and the conservative efforts of the Royal Thai Navy.
After spending an hour at the Conservation Centre, the tour buses brought us out from Sattahip to Pattaya Floating Market for lunch before completing our journey at Bangkok. After which, it was free and easy for everyone until 30 November before our flight back to Singapore.
We would like to thank the Royal Thai Navy, COL Justiin Ang, Tony Tan, all participants and their families for their support for making Sing Siam Regatta 2022 possible.
We would also like to congratulate those who have won a medal. Many new friendships and connections were made through our trip together, and we believe that everyone is waiting for the next Sing Siam Regatta!
Sing Siam Regatta 2023 will be held in Singapore on 22 and 23 April. See you there!
The first day of race saw a late and slow start due to light winds. However, once the marks were laid and ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes had started, the wind shifted 90° to the left which caused the race to be abandoned. After the course was re-laid, the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes started again. Unfortunately, an oncoming heavy downpour from the Marina Bay area caused poor visibility, and the race was abandoned at Mark 1 again.
After lunch, the winds picked up from a steady heading, and an exciting 3 races were ran for all classes.
The next day saw another late start due to Cat 1 from inland. Day 2 started its first race at 2.25 pm for the ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes, and at 2.35 pm for the ILCA 4 class. A total of 2 races were held on the last day.
There were a total of 5 races with 1 discard.
We also had a draw for 4 lucky participants for a top prize of a 1-night stay in our Private Room.
Free 1-night stay at SAF Yacht Club Private Room Elizabeth Victoria Say
25% off the public rate for the PPCDL course at SAF Yacht Club Samuel Tan-Hardy
Congratulations to all the winners!
We would like to thank all the participants for making this regatta possible, and a special thanks to all the sailing clubs for promoting the event to its success.

chance to talk to my fellow sailor friends and simply enjoy being out in the sea. This is not something every kid gets to do often.
Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
A: Throughout the years, I have made many friends during my time at SAFYC. While few of them have moved on from sailing, there are still many good friends around and it's always nice to bump into them now and then and exchange our sailing stories.
Q4: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
from Optimist, I played water polo. I decided that I should focus on one sport, and I chose sailing.
7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?
A: When it's time to study, I'll put aside sailing and make sure to focus on studying. During the weekends, I'll turn my attention to sailing and have fun with it. When a regatta is around the corner, I'll read up on some sailing tips from sailing books as well as watch some sailing tutorial videos.
Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor?

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?
A: It was during one December holiday when my parents signed me up for an Opti Junior course with my sister and cousins. I was the only one who continued sailing after attaining Opti Junior. Since then, I went on to complete Opti Sailor and Opti Racer courses.
Q2: What's your favourite aspect of sailing?
A: I enjoy sailing when the wind is constant and moderate on a good day; I can sail quickly and enjoy cruising across the sea. Otherwise, I take the
A: During one regatta, I didn’t notice that my rudder gudgeon had come loose. It broke off and was out of control right before the first race started. From then I learned the importance of checking my entire boat before launching.
Q5: What about your worst experience in sailing?
A: During my first ILCA 4 regatta, the wind was exceptionally strong. During the second day, the wind was constantly speeding at more than 15 knots. During one of the tacks, an unexpectedly strong gust sent my boat heeling too quickly. I used my entire body weight to quickly jump over to the opposite side but my boat capsized and turtled shortly after. I managed to upright my boat only to have it slammed back down repeatedly. After several tries I got tired and I had to be rescued by the safety boat.
Q6: Are you into other sports?
A: Before I moved to ILCA 4
A: To me, what makes a good sailor is one who is independent. For now, I still need help from my dad or the older sailors with the Laser as it’s larger than an Optimist. I hope one day soon I'll be able to handle it all by myself.
Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
A: I hope to be able to learn fast and well in ILCA 4 and represent Singapore in an international event one day. I also look forward to advancing to Radial by the time I am in Primary 6.
Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating in this year? How do you prepare yourself for the com petition?
A: I had a rewarding experience during the 45th ILCA Championships in December 2022. I look forward to performing better on the next one in 2023. My coach told me to sail well and need to understand and appreciate the elements. Hence, I want to be able to do that to better respond to sea and wind conditions for the next regatta.

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?
A: My mum’s friend introduced her to sailing and my mum asked me if I would like to join a 4-day program to get me started on sailing. After attending GKA at SAYFC Sembawang, I liked the 4-day program and enjoyed the sport. From there, during the years, I have learned a lot from different coaches, Coach Iggy, Coach Loh, and Coach Gracina.
Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?
A: I like to be on the water and learn new skills. During this sailing journey, I also make new friends who share the same passion in sailing. I have become more confident and more independent.
Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?
A: I enjoyed my time at SAF Yacht Club. From a new sailor who knew nothing about sailing to now, I enjoy taking part
in the regatta. I also make a lot of new friends.
Q4: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?
A: When I earned my first medal in the National Sailing Championship 2022 and shortly got promoted to the gold fleet.
Q5: What about your worst experience in sailing?
A: During the Raffles Marina Regatta, on the second race and on the second upwind, I capsized and lost a lot of positions because I could not handle the strong wind but I still carried on after recovering from capsized and completed the race.
Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?
A: Sailing is the only sport which I am currently involved.
Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?

A: Someone who tries their best and never give up.
Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?
A: I am hoping to bring up my ranking in the gold fleet and hope I am able to get into the national squad.
Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?
A: I am looking forward to more regattas for the following year 2023. I prepare myself for competitions by sleeping earlier, reading the NORSI in advance, and on the day before the regatta I will check my equipment and try to check on the tides and wind direction.
What’s a better way to spend the December holidays?
The SAF Yacht Club (SAFYC) members and guests were exclusively invited by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) for an educational visit to the Changi Naval Base on 9 December 2022.
The 41 SAFYC members and guests spent their morning on board the Landing Ship Tank, RSS Endeavour – one of the largest warships in the RSN – and experienced the shipboard life and adventures through sharing of personal stories by the RSN personnel. They also had an exclusive sneak peek of the recently revamped Navy Museum before it will officially reopen in 2023!
Read on to find out more about the highlights of the visit!
On board RSS Endeavour, the SAFYC members and guests visited the Combat Information Centre, Bridge, Wardroom, Hangar, Tank Deck, Galley, and Cafeteria – the main living and working areas of a warship – to experience the RSN personnel’s "home away from home".
At the newly revamped Navy Museum, SAFYC members and guests had the chance to learn more about the history of the RSN, the development of the RSN’s assets and capabilities over the years, as well as how the RSN enhances peace and security through naval diplomacy.
The RSN had a great time hosting the guests and members of the SAFYC, and hoped that they had a great time too! Wishing the SAFYC members and guests fair winds and following seas.
‘Special thanks to the RSN and their personnel for the warm hospitality and sharing of their personal journey. I now have a better understanding of how life is like in the RSN!’

The TDG held their activity-packed team building at SAF Yacht Club on the 21st of October 2022.
The attendees arrived between 08.30 am – 09.00 am followed by a briefing of the day’s activities. The teams started with land activities such as Minefield and Archery. Minefield is an activity that requires great teamwork to succeed. Team members had to guide their blindfolded counterparts through the obstacles to reach the ending point safely. A fun way to team bond with an emphasis on the importance of trust, safety, and effective communication. At the same time, the other teams tried their hands at archery, urging each other to aim for the best (bullseye) to gain perfect scores for their teams.
At 10.00 am, the teams were guided to the pontoon for their sea activity briefing facilitated by our Seasports Manager, Jason Swee. The teams did a fun Banana Boat race and ended with a Ski Tube ride.
After the thrilling rides and survivor-like challenges the teams overcame, the winning team was announced. The losing team took turns at the dunk tank seat where the winning team members had fun trying to dunk their colleagues. It was all done in great fun and lots of laughter was all around!
Lunch was served at 12.30 pm. Although tired from the morning’s activities, everyone had a fun and fulfilling session at the SAF Yacht Club.

The Republic of Singapore Navy also supported the event with some activities as well as a photo booth!
Live music from professional bands added lots of colors and ambiance to the Carnival!
