The theme of this quarter's magazine —"New Year, New Beginning"—resonates deeply with the spirit of our Club. It is a time for fresh sails, renewed purpose, and the excitement of potential journeys ahead. On behalf of the entire staff and management team, thank you for making SAF Yacht Club a true home away from home.

Your unwavering support and deep loyalty truly define the character of this institution. Whether through your active participation in our regattas, your enthusiastic presence at social events, or simply your daily patronage of our facilities, your commitment ensures the Club continues to thrive as a hub of maritime excellence and fellowship. annual general meeting 2025 Our Annual General Meeting 2025 was held on 15 Nov 2025 at our Club's Poolside Lounge. Honorary Secretary (Hon Sec) MAJ Sudhir Anand officiated the meeting.

Commodore RADM Augustine Lim welcomed everyone and commenced the proceedings, highlighting a year of robust performance, underscoring the Club's strong financial footing. The Honorary Secretary then continued with a summary of the year's performance.

SAF Yacht Club’s General Manager, Mr. Teo Wee Chin, presented the Financial Report, which showed a significant increase over the previous financial year. The Club also reported strategic capital investments driven by Members feedbacks.

The Honorary Secretary then presented the strategic outlook for the next financial year (FY2025/2026). Key plans include operational upgrades and refreshing the Club's boats and trailers.

The AGM concluded with the announcement of the incoming Management Committee (MC) for FY2025/2026, noting that no election was required.

Key appointments were highlighted, including the new Vice Commodore, COL Daniel Ng, Co-Opted Member SWO David Ling, and the new Honorary Legal Advisor Ms June Tan.

Commodore RADM Augustine Lim formally concluded the proceedings by presenting tokens of appreciation Management Committee Members for their dedicated service.

Following the adjournment at 3 PM, refreshments were provided to attendees. We extend our sincere gratitude to all Members who participated and look forward to your continued engagement as we commence the new financial term with renewed confidence and enthusiasm.

safyc Charity Farm Growing Good: How SAFYC's Charity Farming Initiative is Cultivating Community and Sustainability We, at the SAF Yacht Club (SAFYC) are driving a mission of sustainability and community impact through our home-grown initiative: SAFYC Charity Farming.

Held on the last Saturday of every month, from 10 AM to 12 PM, this initiative invites all our Members—regardless of experience—to join us in a hands-on space for learning and making a tangible difference.

This project was brought to life through the generosity and hard work of our 4 dedicated Members — Mr Daniel Ling, Mr Alvin Lim, Ms Aimee Lim, Mr Tan Sio Piew — as well as a group of sponsors.

They funded the initial infrastructure, devoted signif icant time, and supplied the resources needed to build the farm completely from scratch. This initiative was fully supported by MINDEF and was completed in Dec 2024.

This is about more than gardening; it's about strengthening our community spirit and growing local food resilience. This regular gathering aligns us and our Members directly with Singapore's critical urban farming mission. By dedicating our time to nurturing these gardens, we demonstrate how every small community can contribute to the larger national effort to boost food security.

Crucially, all our harvested produce is sent to the Sembawang Central Zone B Residents’ Network, ensuring our efforts provide fresh, nutritious support right where it is most needed in the neighbourhood.

For our participating Members, this activity offers a welcome chance to de-stress, gain valuable knowledge on sustainable farming techniques, and connect with fellow Members over a shared, purposeful activity.

More importantly, by contributing to the Community Centre, we demonstrate the power of community impact extending beyond the Club's premises. SAFYC is committed to championing impactful activities, showing that our support for sustainability is best expressed through collective action.

Qingdao Regatta 2025 Qingdao International Optimist Regatta 2025 and Qingdao International Youth Regatta 2025 (ILCA4)

The 17th Qingdao International Sailing Week 2025 took place in Sep 2025, featuring the Qingdao International Optimist Regatta 2025 and the Qingdao International Youth Regatta 2025 (ILCA4), which ran from 11-16 Sep 2025.

These prestigious events were hosted by the Chinese Yachting Association and the Qingdao Municipal People’s Government, with organisation led by the Qingdao Major International Sailing Events Organising Committee, Qingdao Municipal Sports Bureau, Qingdao Municipal Education Bureau, Qingdao Tourism Group, China Marine Sports Academy, Qingdao Olympic Sailing City Development Association, and the Qingdao Yachting Association. All events were held at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre.

Nearly 200 young sailors from 34 teams across 13 countries and regions participated, including representatives from Australia, Russia, Germany, Poland, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and four Chinese provinces and cities.

A total of 8 sailors were selected to represent Team SAFYC (Singapore), consisting of 6 Optimist sailors and 2 ILCA 4 sailors. The Optimist sailors included Aidan Armand Anuar, Quintan Low, Dan Toh, Jairus Teo, Yvette Chow, and Mikaela Wong, while the ILCA 4 team was represented by Lauren Lim and Angela Huang. The team was led by SAFYC Team Manager Jason Swee and Coach Xu Xiaodong.

Over the course of 6 days of racing, competitors faced variable winds ranging from 3 to 10 knots, accompanied by ambient temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. On average, 2 races were held each day, with no more than 3 races scheduled per day.

Our Optimist sailors performed admirably in the qualifying races, securing spots in the Gold Fleet for the final races. Jairus Teo (Team SAFYC, Singapore) achieved 8th place in both the Male Gold Fleet and Male categories at the Qingdao International Optimist Regatta 2025 and the Qingdao-ASEAN OP Sailing Invitational Tournament 2025, respectively. Mikaela Wong (Team SAFYC, Singapore) earned 4th place in the Qingdao-ASEAN OP Sailing Invitational Tournament 2025.

In the ILCA 4 event, while Lauren and Angela did not secure top rankings, their debut performance in Qingdao was highly commendable.

Their perseverance and hard work will undoubtedly inspire our sailors to push harder and strive for greater success in future competitions.

We extend our congratulations to all sailors, with special mention to Jairus and Mikaela for their outstanding performances!

The closing and awards ceremony took place on the evening of 16 Sep at the Qingdao International Conference Centre. During the ceremony, sailors from Thailand, Singapore, Russia, Indonesia, Poland, Australia, as well as Chinese sailors from Sichuan and other provinces, showcased a vibrant cultural talent show. Our Team SAFYC (Singapore) sailors performed the SG60 National Dance – Here We Are, which was warmly received by the audience.

Well done to our sailors!

The trip concluded with a half-day city tour on 17 Sep, where the organisers kindly arranged for international sailors to visit Qingdao's renowned tourist attractions. The tour also provided a wonderful opportunity for young sailors and their parents from different countries to connect and interact.

Once again, the Qingdao International Sailing Week has proven to be an invaluable experience for our young sailors, offering them the opportunity to sharpen their skills on the international stage while forming lifelong friendships.

Bi-Monthly Trophy Race The final series of the 2025 Bi-Monthly Trophy Race was held on 8 Nov with 4 boats racing. It was a radiant day with good winds and even better wind patches.

The favourable westerly winds allowed for competitive upwind starts for both races! The competitors started off within close quarters of each other, and their masterful boat handling did not allow for any contact. Thankful for the westerly winds, the competitors sailed an Upwind and Downwind course from the start line and Senoko A Buoy with a figure 8 between Senoko A Buoy and Deman Shoal.

After 2 races, the sailors gathered at the Sailor’s Briefing Corner for a closing BBQ. It was a great day of racing, and we believe that everyone enjoyed themselves!

A big thank you to all sailors for your participation, and also to SC Yong for volunteering to be the Race Official for this series and several other series this year.

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?

Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

My sister and I always try out new things during the holidays. During such holiday, my parents suggested to try out sailing.

Although I was skeptical at first, but then I agreed to try it out. I enrolled for the GKA programme and I ended up liking sailing, so I continued to sail and soon started doing regattas.

I have made a lot of memories in SAF Yacht Club. I have made a lot of friends and got inspired to do better because of my coaches. The coaches who helped me most are coach Iggy, coach Xiaodong, coach Low, coach Angela and coach Murphy.

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?

I like making new friends during my sailing journey.

Q4: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?

My most memorable sailing experience was when I won my first medal in my very first regatta. It was a SAFYC Regatta of 2024 where I won 3rd place in the Under 8 yrs old category.

Q5: What about your worst experience in sailing?

My worst sailing experience was during a regatta when I capsized, and my bow broke. I didn’t lose hope. I came back to shore, changed my boat and went back into the water again to race.

Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?

I swim and play tennis sometimes. But sailing is my favourite sport.

Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?

I try to finish my homework at school. If I am unable to finish, then I study right after I get back from sailing, and I only go to sleep when I’m done with my homework.

Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor?

A good sailor means never giving up, even if the conditions are tough.

Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?

My personal goal is to get into as many international regattas possible.

Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?

RSYC Gold Knockout because I like the format of this regatta. My preparation for every regatta is the same; I try to spend more time training and try to do my best.

It will be skills, your hard work , determination , and perseverance that will get you there .

Q1: How did your sailing journey come about?

My brothers were also sailors with SAFYC, and I had been watching them sail and participate in regattas for many years. I especially enjoyed the overseas regattas with them and aspired to be like them. I started with GKA when I was in Primary 1, but I was very scared and easily frightened by strong winds and gusts at that time, so much so that my eldest brother had to help sail me back to shore. But I persevered, and now I can sail comfortably in winds of 7 to 10 knots.

Q2: What’s your favourite aspect of sailing?

To perform well and qualify for participation in overseas regattas. I enjoy going for international regattas to see and learn from other sailors – the different techniques and how they do things differently.

CHOW CHOW Q3: What can you say about your time with SAF Yacht Club?

I love being part of the sailing community with SAF Yacht Club! It feels like a big family, and I made many good friends. The coaches are also very friendly and teach us a lot about sailing.

There are also many activities beyond sailing at the Club, too!

Q4: Could you share your most memorable sailing experience?

My most memorable sailing experience was during the SAFYC Sing-Siam Regatta 2024 in Sattahip, Thailand. It was my very first overseas regatta, and I was nervous and very excited. The waters at Sattahip were beautiful, and the sailing experience was awesome! My team got 1st for team racing, which was my very first sailing trophy!

Q5: What about your worst experience in sailing?

I try to prioritise what needs to be done first, have good time management and strive to be able to finish things in time and not get stressed so that I can enjoy my time during sailing.

It was during my first GKA when I was in Primary 1 (I went to GKA and C-squad twice, as I was not confident at all then ). I had capsized and was stuck underneath the boat, and 1 of my GKA coaches, Coach Lucius, had to swim under the boat to come get me. I was terrified and embarrassed as well!

Q8: For you, what makes a good sailor?

Q6: Are you into other sports besides sailing? If yes, what are they?

Q9: What are your personal goals in terms of sailing?

Q7: How do you manage sailing around your curriculum of studies?

I pay attention during lessons in school, which helps me better understand the academic curriculum. I also finish my homework in school as much as possible, or complete it and revise my work at home during weekday evenings. On weekends, I ensure that I complete schoolwork and assignments before training and, if necessary, do my revisions when I get back home after training.

A good sailor always tries his/her best and puts in effort to improve and persevere no matter what.

I hope to qualify for the National Squad and be able to represent Singapore in international regattas.

Q10: Any regattas you are looking forward to participating this year? How do you prepare yourself for the competition?

Qingdao International Regatta 2025.

Listen to advice from my coaches, my brothers (who had previously participated in this regatta), rest well between trainings and go with an open mind to learn from other sailors!

48th Singapore ILCA Open SAF Yacht Club Hosts a Spectacular 48th Singapore ILCA Open at NSRCC — A Record-Breaking Weekend of Wind, Waves & World-Class Racing The spirit of competition soared high as SAF Yacht Club proudly hosted the 48th Singapore ILCA Open from 6–7 Dec 2025 at National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC). This year’s edition was nothing short of extraordinary, marking a significant milestone with 1 of the largest ever turnout for the ILCA 4 class—an impressive 50 sailors on the starting line, accompanied by 19 competitive boats in the ILCA 6 class. From seasoned racers to rising youth talents, the water brimmed with energy, anticipation, and the unmistakable buzz of a top-level sailing event.

Day 1: Power-Packed Winds Set the Stage The regatta kicked off under classic Northeast Monsoon conditions, treating competitors to a thrilling blend of challenge and opportunity.

Winds pulsed across the course at a steady 20–25 knots, with gusts pushing the limits and rewarding sailors who weren’t afraid to push right back.

The fleet surged across the water in exhilarating sprints downwind and tactically complex upwind battles. Despite the demanding conditions, the race committee and safety team worked seamlessly to roll out 3 fast action-filled races, setting a high bar for the remainder of the event.

Day 2: Shifty Winds Deliver a True Test of Skill Day 2 brought another helping of the Northeast Monsoon’s muscle, with winds gusting around 18 knots—slightly tamer but far trickier. Shifty wind patterns kept sailors on their toes, demanding sharp tactical awareness and nimble reactions.

The sailors embraced the challenge, showcasing exceptional skill, resilience, and sportsmanship. The race committee completed 4 competitive races, bringing the event to a 7-race series. Every start, shift, and rounding counted—and the final results reflected the sailors’ unwavering focus and tenacity.

A Weekend to Remember The 48th Singapore ILCA Open was more than just a regatta — it was a celebration of passion, perseverance, and the thriving sailing spirit in Singapore. The event would not have been possible without the tremendous support from our volunteers, race management team, safety crew, parents, and the entire sailing fraternity.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all participants for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and commitment, which helped make this event a resounding success. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 49th Singapore ILCA Open next year, where we aim to make the event even bigger, better, and more exciting.

STAFF HIGHLIGHT Meet Vivus Loh, the friendly face behind our Marketing and Membership desk who has been a vital part of the team for over three years now—seriously, just look for the dazzling blue hair! Vivus is our resident historian, always keen to delve into the past, and he often champions stunning Chinese traditional dress at events. Come on in and discover more about this key Member of the team and what makes his role tick!

1. What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I love interacting with the various levels of people, from vendors to operations.

2. What does a day in your work look like?

Mornings are usually spent replying to emails and then going through the numerous group chats of wedding clients to either block or book dates. This can take up to an hour or so, depending on the number of requests they have.

If an event requires supervision, I will go to the Lazarus Ballroom or the Poolside Lounge downstairs.

3. If you had a superpower, what would you want that to be?

Telekinesis! With that, I can have many “hands” that I can deploy to a variety of tasks.

4. What kind of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?

Reading has always been my hobby, and I gravitate towards subjects like anthropology and ancient history.

5. Tell us something about you that most people don’t know.

I can play two instruments.

6. What’s your biggest achievement so far in life?

Being relatively healthy and stable. I was a former wild child.
