FROM THE ADMINISTRATION, BOARD & SISTERS

AT SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY we provide students, from preschool through high school, a well-rounded education that engages them with hands-on learning and enables them to lead and make a difference in the world.

This year, we have returned to having in-person, real-world learning activities that are so central to a Sacred Hearts education and the development of women leaders. Some of these activities are featured in photos throughout this issue of Academy

From the founding of the Academy in 1909, providing a high quality and affordable education has been the aim of the Sacred Hearts Sisters. Now in 2022, we all continue to strive to achieve those goals. Currently, tuition covers about 80% of the cost of educating a student at the Academy. The remaining 20% is provided through the support and generosity of many others in the Sacred Hearts Academy ‘ohana: parents, grandparents, alumnae, friends, community partners, foundations, staff and the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts.

This issue of The Academy highlights those who have contributed financially to the school during the last academic year. And it features stories of donors Gordon and Sonia Trimble, and PWH scholarship recipient, Journey Flores. You will also enjoy reading about retired music faculty members, Sr. Angela Gregorio and Sr. Rose Henry Reeves, who celebrated jubilees this year.

Your support of Sacred Hearts Academy is sincerely appreciated. Through your gifts and other contributions, we experience your presence on campus every day!

Gifts of cash, securities, personal property or life insurance proceeds provide a valuable resource which the Academy uses to support and enhance programs, improve facilities, deliver professional development for faculty, and provide scholarships for students.

REAL ESTATE

The Academy welcomes gifts of real estate transferred during a lifetime or by will.

PLANNED GIVING

The Academy encourages donors to explore the possibilities and opportunities for creative gift planning so the Academy can assist them in a variety of gift considerations to meet their individual needs.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many companies offer matching gifts to an employee’s charitable contributions. This benefit can double an employee’s gift to the Academy. Inquire with your employer to see if the company offers you a matching gift program, and, if so, obtain the proper forms to forward to the Academy.

SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY 9 ANNUAL REPORT

Journey Flores ʼ23

A recipient of the prestigious Patrick W. Hopper Scholarship, senior Journey Flores, found Sacred Hearts. Four years later, she’s thriving at the Academy in leadership roles.

SENIOR JOURNEY FLORES became a Lancer through the Academy’s Ka Lei ‘Ike Summer program. The Ka Lei ‘Ike program invites high potential students from Palolo Elementary School to participate in summer school sessions at the Academy beginning in their 4th grade year and continuing through their years at Jarrett Middle School. The primary goal of the program is to leverage their academic strengths and develop their leadership skills so that they are ready to take advantage of learning opportunities in high school and college.

Actually, Journey started in the Ka Lei ‘Iki program a bit later than usual, after she finished 7th grade at Jarrett Middle School. She remembers the opportunities she was given at the Academy during that summer, but as an 8th grader, she hadn’t thought about applying to the Academy; she was set on attending a public high school.

However, participating in the Ka Lei ‘Iki summer program made Sacred Hearts Academy a realistic option, and with encouragement from several adults, Journey, with her mom’s help, completed her application to attend the Academy.

She received the prestigious PWH scholarship which helps deserving students attend a Hawai‘i Catholic high school through a very generous grant that covers tuition, fees, and other educational necessities.

“My favorite year as a PWH scholar was my freshman year. I attended the PWH retreat with other scholars from Damien Memorial School and Saint Joseph School in Hilo. At the retreat, other scholars shared their aspirations about who they wanted to become and talked often about this great academic

to thrive in academics as I saw a different learning perspective. While at Jarrett Middle School, I designed and created art to use on flyers and programs.” She was also in the Kulia After School All Starsinvolved with different performing arts productions like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan.

Journey shares, “I designed sets and stages, and sewed costumes. I was very resourceful in creating sets using

cardboard, fabric, and paint. Before leaving middle school, I coordinated the painting of a large mural on campus which is still visible today. The greatest joy has been bringing these skills with me to Sacred Hearts.”

As Journey became more and more active in the arts, the better her grades became. She is so proud to share, “I am a 4.0 student and have taken on leadership roles on campus: I look forward to going to college on the mainland, maybe Northern Arizona University, to possibly major in both creative arts and science.”

Dr. Sharleen Chock, her college counselor, says, “Journey’s engagement at Sacred Hearts Academy is impressive. Journey is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, the Sailing club, the Art Club, and Women in STEM. She also has a part-time job at Kaimuki Library, shelving books, organizing orders, and shipping book orders to different libraries.”

and social/personal support we were receiving. This scholarship program provides everything to make sure I am successful, not just covering tuition. We scholars were also given a dedicated academic counselor and coach to help us succeed.”

Journey says, “I also developed my religious faith at the Academy. My exposure to an active faith was inspiring, though at times I felt a bit intimidated. The Catholic faith was foreign to me, but throughout my orientation to a Catholic school, I have found my teachers and fellow students loving and helpful.”

Journey confesses she was not academically inclined in elementary school; she was just passing with C’s. Art soon became a serious pursuit for Journey when a teacher encouraged her creativity. Journey says, “Art allowed me

Cleo Eubanks, the PWH advisor at the Academy, readily shares that it is students like Journey Flores, who motivate her to continue being an educator and get to know and support such outstanding students. “I am always inspired, not only by the students, but also their ohana. It takes a village to raise a child has a special meaning to me.” 

SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY 21
ANNUAL REPORT
• Andromeda Tong ’23 sings solo with back up from the choir at the Christmas performance.

Gordon and Sonia Trimble

For over fourteen years, the Trimbles generosity and impact expand beyond sending Academy girls through a cross-cultural immersion program abroad. They touch lives through their belief and support of the selective excellence at Sacred Hearts.

GORDON AND SONIA TRIMBLE have a very special and unique relationship with the Academy. Although the Trimbles have no Sacred Hearts graduates in their family, they have nurtured a wonderful connection to the Academy’s ‘Ohana that is exciting and vibrant.

During the famous recession of 2008, Sonia Trimble read in the local paper that many private school students in Honolulu would be enrolling in public schools because their parents could not afford the tuition. This was disturbing to Sonia, and her husband told her to call Betty White, the Head of School at Sacred Hearts Academy, at the time. And according to Sonia, “This is how the beautiful relationship with Sacred Hearts began for us.”

According to Gordon, “Sonia and I are usually rational people, but it is emotion

that gets us to act.” He says, “We wanted to help Academy girls stay at Sacred Hearts, and with Betty White’s help, a scholarship program was created.”

The Trimbles enjoyed Betty White as a person and how she motivated students and teachers as an administrator. The deciding factor was we liked that Betty, as a non-Catholic Head of School, was effectively and successfully running a traditionally Catholic school to be an outstanding institution. Gordon

mentions, “She did this by simply being in a league of her own! Betty’s ‘league’ wholly embraced the Sisters’ Catholic doctrine which touched every student’s soul in one way or another during their years at the Academy.”

Gordon and Sonia Trimble continued to build their relationship and friendship with Head of School, Betty White, and for over 14 years, have generously supported Academy students with tuition assistance

Gordon and Sonia organized a cross cultural immersion program with the University of Puget Sound in Fuzhou, China. Hwa Nan Women’s College was home base for 25 U.S. mainland students as they explored the local language and culture. This program was successful, and the Trimbles decided to include Sacred Hearts girls in this cross-cultural immersion. Since 2012, the Trimbles have sponsored four immersion experiences with each lasting about 14 days for approximately ten students per experience.

When asked how the Chinese immersion program impacts Academy students, Gordon Trimble shares, “The program ages them. On their return, the students take school and their parents more seriously. They have interacted with a culture that places an incredible value on education and diligence. They

understand that they are going to have to try much harder if they want to compete successfully on the global stage.” This very successful program stopped when the pandemic arrived, but the Trimbles hope to continue it once it is safe to travel in China again.

When asked what inspires their Trimble Family Foundation to support the University of Puget Sound, Fujian Nan Women’s College, the California Institute of Technology, and in particular, Sacred Hearts Academy, Sonia easily responds, “We are not interested in starting new programs or building structures. We look for programs that are doing well but will do even better with some help from our Foundation. The impact is great and enhances a student’s perspective on, and attitude toward, life.”

Gordon Trimble, who served in Hawai‘i’s State Senate from 2003 through 2008, concludes, “We cannot do everything, but we can offer our support, and we do it simply because we can. We limit our engagement to a few institutions because if we dilute our efforts too much, not as much is accomplished. We believe in selective excellence and are happy that we can support the girls at Sacred Hearts Academy.” 

through the Gordon and Sonia Trimble Scholarship. After Betty White retired, the Trimbles have enjoyed working with White’s successor, Dr. Scott Schroeder. In 2012, the Trimbles also started the China Scholars Program for Academy students. Earlier in 2011,

30 SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY
ANNUAL REPORT

Academy Generosity

STUDENTS RETURNED TO CAMPUS in August 2022 with or without masks. COVID-19 protocols slowly disappeared, and Sacred Hearts Academy welcomed families and friends back to campus with events such as Mele on the Lawn, Academy Uncorked, Fright Night, band concerts, sports activities, and Christmas performances. We look forward to spring events that will include the Science Symposium, Spring Mele on the Lawn, an Easter Egg Hunt, Commencement and the Alumnae Reunion.

We are reminded that Sacred Hearts is a school where girls learn to become future leaders through class work, extra-curricular activities, and social bonding. We are also reminded that our students would not be here without your generous support of the Annual Fund, Scholarship Funds, Capital Campaign, and other special projects.

Many families rely on financial aid and scholarships to keep their daughters at Sacred Hearts. Over 63% of our families receive some type of financial aid. Likewise, unrestricted funds allow administrators and teachers to support the greatest areas of need. That could mean sound equipment for the arts, microscopes for the sciences or calculators for the math department, or playground equipment for the Lower School children. Even though these unrestricted funds can also be used for tuition assistance if needed, unrestricted funds definitely lead to unrestricted possibilities.

A visit to campus reveals current projects:

• The grotto in the center of the campus, originally constructed by the Sisters in prayer for the first principal of the school, Sr. Constantine Gayraud, has been refurbished with new waterfalls, a fountain and the Sacred Hearts logo prominently featured;

• The Upper School conference room has now become a Conference Center, featuring state-of-the art audio visual equipment and historical artifacts of the Academy;

• The much-used Tseu Innovation Center in the Lower School that applies action learning for grades 1 through 12;

• The Sister Margaret Mary Chapel where the stained-glass windows are being restored “one frame at a time”, is waiting for anticipated air conditioning to be installed soon.

These projects would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors like you who are reaching deeply into their pockets to help the Academy reach its goal of $3.1 million dollars by December 2023.

“Academy Generosity” is present through your gracious support. Through your gifts, efforts, and prayers, we experience your presence on campus every day!

With great hope and warm aloha,

SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY 31 MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Sisters Serving

Sr. Angela Gregorio and Sr. Rose Henry Reeves

This issue of the Academy features two Sisters, both Sacred Hearts graduates and music teachers, who celebrate jubilees this year— Sr. Angela Gregorio, 70 years and Sr. Rose Henry Reeves, 60 years. Both had exceptional musical talents nurtured as students at the Academy. In turn, they as teachers, nurtured many young women as students.

SSR. ANGELA GREGORIO came from a musical family. Her father played in the military bands in the Philippines and Hawai‘i. After a time in the public school and at St. Patrick School, Sr. Angela developed her musical talent, especially as a pianist and organist under the tutelage of the Sisters at the Academy.

For Sister Angela, one of the greatest values of an Academy education is that students are encouraged, not forced, to grow and develop as individual persons with unique skills and potential. Whether in the classroom or in private lessons, Sr. Angela endeared herself to hundreds of students whom she taught religion, choral music and musical instruments throughout her teaching career at the Academy, Sacred Hearts Convent and St. Patrick School.

Sr. Angela is also highly appreciated by the many parishes and families whom she

• Sr. Angela Gregorio

served by playing for weddings, funerals, and other celebrations. Now in her 90th year, she shares a desire and a prayer that people love their families and spend quality time with them.

THE ROOTS OF SR. ROSE HENRY REEVES go deep into Sacred Hearts education. Her grandmother graduated from the Sisters’ Convent school on Fort Street; her mother was a 1929 graduate of the Academy, and Sister Rose Henry and her four sisters are all Daughters of the Academy.

All the Reeves children were grounded in music because their mother, a widow with 9 children supported her family as an organist for Borthwick Mortuary, various parishes and special events. The girls took music at the Academy, and Sr. Rose Henry (Sylvia) excelled especially in piano and voice. Although she loved sports, there was a tug-of-war between playing basketball and practicing cello with the Academy’s small orchestra.

Sister Rose Henry found value in an all-girls education. There few distractions and the students developed a seriousness of purpose. She admired the deep prayer life and simplicity of the Sacred Hearts who led her to join the Congregation right after high school.

The Sisters encouraged Rose Henry to continue her studies at the University of Hawai‘i studying music and education. Afterwards, she spent 25 years teaching music at the Academy. During this period, she was also a part of the St. Anthony community in Kalihi, where she cooked and cared for a few boarding students who attended the Academy.

In 1987, Sister Rose Henry volunteered with Sr. Regina Mary Jenkins to go to Bhubaneswar, India to open a community. The two Sisters joined the Sacred Hearts Fathers who were already there focusing on the “Elimination of Leprosy” Program

in India. The Sisters were also involved in inviting young Indian girls to join the Congregation.

After 25 years of service in India, the government made it difficult for foreign Sisters to work there, so Sister Rose Henry

volunteered to serve in the Philippines where she has been since 2018.

With a song in her heart and on her lips, Sister Rose Henry continues to spread the joy and the love of the Sacred Hearts to individuals wherever she goes.

Her message to all is: “God loves a cheerful giver, give it all you’ve got. He loves to hear you laughing when you’re in an awkward spot. When the odds add up against you, it’s time to stop and sing praises to God. Doing so is a wonderous thing. Him is a wondrous thing!” 

ALUMNAE SPOTLIGHT

Linda Luke ’67

With almost a forty-year career with the Hawai‘i Judiciary as a Family Court Judge and a District Court judge, alumna Linda Luke feels blessed with the mentors along her journey, and she reflects on how the Academy helped shape the person she is today.

WHEN LINDA LUKE, ’67, graduated as a proud member of the Class of 1967, she was poised and prepared to take on the challenge of plotting her future beyond the secure walls of Sacred Hearts Academy. The inspiration provided by the dedicated faculty that nurtured her development made a difference in preparing Linda for the world awaiting her, often thousands of miles from Waialae Avenue.

WOver the next fifty years, Linda would continue to grow intellectually from the young girl living on Third Avenue in Kaimuki to a very focused individual who obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Hawai‘i, her Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center, and an almost 40-year career with the Hawai‘i Judiciary where she served as a Family Court Judge and a District Court judge.

Linda feels she was truly blessed

• Linda Luke’s last day on the bench in August 2019

with outstanding mentors along her journey, including: her dad, Richard, and mom, Helen, who valued a Catholic education and sacrificed to make it happen for her and her three sisters: Shirley Luke Yuen, ’51, Lorraine Luke Lung, ’56, and Janet Luke Goo, ’59.

Other notable mentors included: United States Senator Daniel K. Inouye who hired her as a Legislative Aide during the Watergate hearings; Chief Justice William S. Richardson who brought her on board as a Supreme Court law clerk and later appointed her to the Family Court bench; Herb Cornuelle, CEO of Dillingham Corporation; and Joshua Agsalud, Director of the Hawai‘i Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Linda was also privileged to start her judicial career under the guidance of the late Honorable Betty M. Vitousek, Senior Judge of the Family Court, who was a consummate jurist with a keen intellect and unlimited compassion for children

and families in distress.

During Linda’s many years on the bench, she very much enjoyed passing on the lessons learned from her mentors to new judges and staff, both in Hawai‘i and nationally. During these years, she was privileged to serve on the first Board of Managers of Sacred Hearts Academy where she supported Head of School Betty White in achieving the school’s mission of educating young women to make significant contributions to their communities and professions as Academy graduates. Also, Linda was able to put her legal training to work assisting Sacred Hearts Dean Lurline Choy in coaching the Academy’s Moot Court team in their successful debating competitions.

In August of 2019, on the occasion of Linda’s retirement, Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald honored Linda with a Certificate of Recognition for her 38 years of service as a judge, noting that she had the distinction of being the longest serving full time judge in the

State of Hawai‘i.

As she transitions into retirement, Linda shares that she is grateful for her family, husband and children, and that they are always her greatest inspiration. Linda says that sitting among her classmates at graduation in 1967, she could not have foreseen all of these experiences or the wonderful people with whom she would connect in the years ahead.

Linda is definitely recognized as a stalwart leader in the community, and she concludes, “The Academy DNA is definitely in my blood, and it has helped make me the person I am! Spreading joy, lifting others, and being kind are important values to me. Accomplishments aside, I want to be remembered as an individual who extends grace, compassion, empathy and love to others.” 

The Academy DNA is definitely in my blood, and it has helped make me the person I am! Spreading joy, lifting others, and being kind are important values to me.”

After a three-year hiatus, Academy Uncorked 2022’s sold-out event featured a scrumptious dinner prepared by reknown Chef Roy Yamaguchi and music by The Mākaha Sons and student performers. Guests were also treated to a special performance by Dr. Glenn Medeiros, President of St. Louis School.

Alumnae, parents, corporations, friends and volunteers enjoyed an evening under the stars while raising funds for scholarships.
