T

HIS YEAR AND LAST,

the entire Academy community has had to continue to

adapt in order to navigate the uncertainty created by the COVID pandemic.

Our upper school students comment regularly on how they’ve learned to cope with ambiguity and engage their creativity.

While our school has remained nimble in responding to the COVID pandemic in ways that will help to keep us all healthy and safe, we also have continued

to be proactive and strategic in leveraging the advantages of being an all-girls school and moving steadfastly to be girl-focused in everything we do: what we teach, how we teach and the activities we provide our students.

Our ability to move forward, our ability to provide a Sacred Hearts education second to none, is a result of the tremendous support of many in the Sacred Hearts Academy ‘ohana … parents, grandparents, alumnae, friends, community partners, faculty, staff and the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts.

This issue of Academy highlights those who have contributed financially to the school during the last academic year. And it features stories of alumna Cathy Lee, ‘83, who designed our new Tseu Innovation Center, a space that will facilitate our girl-focused education, enabling us to teach new things in new ways. You’ll also read about student Ariana Sun, who is taking full advantage of opportunities for hands-on learning experiences at the Academy. We’ve also included a feature on two of the Academy’s most impactful Sisters of the Sacred Hearts, Sr. Regina Mary Jenkins and Sr. Helene Wood, who celebrated their 60th Jubilee this year.

Outright gifts of cash, securities, personal property or file life insurance provide a valuable resource which the Academy uses to support and enhance programs, maintain an improved facility, provide professional development for faculty and scholarships for students.

The Academy welcomes gifts of real estate transferred during a lifetime or by will.

The Academy encourages donors to explore the possibilities and opportunities for creative gift planning. The Academy can assist donors in a variety of gift considerations to meet their individual needs.

Many companies offer matching gifts to an employee’s charitable contributions. This benefit can double an employee’s gift to the Academy. Inquire with your employer to see if your company has a matching gift program.

Ariana Sun ’23

This accomplished Lancer shares the benefits of participating in a variety of experience-enriched opportunities and how they have given her a glimpse into the life she wishes for the future in science and engineering.

A

S A DAUGHTER OF THE ACADEMY who began her journey at Sacred Hearts Academy in Junior Kindergarten, Ariana Sun, now a Junior in High School, exemplifies what it means to be a Lancer: she is a confident, academically successful leader who is committed to bettering herself and her community. With a 4.0 GPA and diverse interests that range from air riflery to founding the SHA Engineering club, Ariana seeks out new opportunities regularly, crediting her experiences at the academy for many of her educational and personal achievements: “The math and science courses offered by the Academy have created an immersive and progressive environment where I can advance my education. The clubs and extracurricular activities have helped me to bond with my classmates and form

connections with my community.

Recently, I have been fortunate enough to further my interests in Engineering, and 3D Printing in particular, by using the resources allocated towards furthering Women in Engineering. Some of my most favorable experiences through SHA were the STEM Symposiums and the Air Riflery Program.”

and activities including student council, the Soroptimist Club, the Interact Club, and, for her second year in a row, Girls Got GRIT, a Sacred Heart Academy mentor and internship program for Academy sophomores and juniors.

When reapplying to the GGG program for 2022, Ariana shared what she hopes to gain (and give back), both in the program and going forward into her college years:

“As a member of the Girls Got GRIT internship program, I am able to display my Grace through my actions, further my Resilience in the work that I am involved in, focus on my Integrity through immersion, and persist in my Tenacity to succeed. By participating in activities and internships, both outside of my comfort zone and within my field of interest, I am exposed to different settings and environments where I can fully prosper and learn. With these wonderful and experience-enriched opportunities, I am given a glimpse into the life that I wish for in the future. My various leadership positions and activities allow me to collaborate and communicate diligently

and constructively. I wish to be the best role model and aspiring female leader that I can be.”

As part of her involvement in GGG, Ariana was given the opportunity to complete a professional internship with Air Service Hawaii, an experience she says she will never forget: “As my very first internship opportunity, my experience at Air Service Hawaii proved to be highly valuable and opened my eyes to the various career options in my future. When I started at Air Service Hawaii, my main goal was learning how to interact with and communicate properly with clients, colleagues, and teachers. As I shadowed the client services representatives (CSRs) while they worked their flights, I was able to observe how those at Air Service Hawaii embrace their clients with the aloha spirit while also granting them quick service. These interactions demonstrate the ideals behind providing

exceptional service and showing professionalism. By working with the CSRs and other employees, I was able to experience the supportive environment between colleagues. The community at Air Service Hawaii surrounded me with an aura of camaraderie that one should experience within a work environment.

Everyone was treated with respect and kindness as they worked together to provide quality services.

Air Service Hawaii has also taught me that communication is key, whether it be within the company or with the clients. Proper communication results in clarity and reliability. By communicating effectively, I will be able to make fewer errors and increase the trust that others have in me. Most importantly, those at Air Service Hawaii taught me to enjoy the work that you do. Every day, despite the irregular hours, everyone had a distinct love for their job. This approach to life and their careers will stick with me as a lifelong lesson.”

After graduation, Ariana hopes to focus her studies in the fields of engineering and computer science.

She plans to apply to science and/ or engineering-focused mainland universities. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this bright and accomplished Lancer! 

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Build on the Power of One THE 2021 YEAR HAS FLOWN BY, and the year is soon coming to an end. In our

last ACADEMY, you were reminded that there are many ways to support Sacred Hearts Academy. Here are three additonal ways that you can help “Build on the Power of One” and support the Academy in 2021. Getting tax breaks is an extra bonus!

First, you can make a cash donation to Sacred Hearts Academy by December 31, 2021, and take advantage of expanded tax benefits approved under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. The IRS says, “This includes deductions up to $600 for people who gave cash donations to qualifying charities during 2021.”

Second, the IRS is also providing Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) for donors who are 70-1/2 years old or older. When planning your IRA withdrawal strategy, you may want to consider making charitable donations through a QCD. A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity such as Sacred Hearts Academy. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met.

In addition to the benefits of giving to the Academy, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare. (Your tax advisor can help you determine if both your IRA and charity qualify for QCDs.) As you read about our exciting capital campaign projects, a third way to support the Academy and our capital campaign projects is through the transfer of stocks.

Sr. Regina Mary Jenkins, SS.CC. ’57

Celebrating her 60th anniversary, we reflect on Sr. Regina’s wonderful journey from entering the noviate of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts to volunteering with leprosy eradication in India, and eventually making her way back home.

away from the Academy, and she attended Ali‘iolani School that was across from Sacred Hearts Academy on Waialae Avenue. So it was not surprising that her parents enrolled Marvel Jenkins and her sisters Carolynne Jenkins ’54, Luella Jenkins ’60 and Clarissa Jenkins ’64 at the Academy when Marvel entered the 7th grade.

Marvel found the transition from a public school to a private all girls Catholic school a shocking but inspiring experience.

She liked the beautiful singing of the classes at prayer and worship, as well as, other school events. At this time, there were many Sisters at the Academy who taught everything and were very patient with the students, even though they were considered quite strict.

Marvel enjoyed her experiences at the school and was involved not only in

school work, but in sports and music.

But, especially, she enjoyed serving in leadership roles—Class President, President of the Council of Catholic

Schools that brought together the leaders from St. Louis, Maryknoll, St. Francis, and Star of the Sea. She was also President of the Oahu Youth Council bringing together

students from thirty-three public and other private schools. For Marvel, high school was a very social time with great interaction among students from the various high schools. She enjoyed life, her friends and school in general. When her senior teacher, Sr. Mary Rose, asked if she would like to be a Sister, Marvel quickly responded, “Oh no, I want to get married and have six children!”

After graduation, Marvel went to Holy Names College in California and during intercession of her freshman year, the vision of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts at the prie-dieu (kneelers) came to her mind at 1 o’clock in the morning. This image stayed with her, and she thought of all the great Catholic women of faith that had touched her life—her mother, the Sisters, teachers and students of Holy Names and of the Academy. Their way of living the faith impressed her. She felt that the Academy and the kindness of the Sisters were gifts, and she seriously prayed and realized that it was a call, and she had to answer it. She related her feelings to her parents and Sr. Mary Gertrude who were very supportive of Marvel entering religious life.

Marvel entered the novitiate of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts with Sarah Ann Wood, a school mate two years younger. Both made their first profession on August 22, 1961 making August 22, 2021 their 60th anniversary as Sisters!

Taking the religious name Regina Mary, Marvel found life in the convent strict, with her family allowed to visit for only one hour a month. However, she enjoyed her time spent before the Eucharist and her first assignment as a teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy. She was placed with the senior class and taught religion, mathematics, chemistry and worked with the Student Council.

After some years of teaching, she was given a sabbatical year in Rome where she attended the Gregorian University in a two-year certificate program in spirituality.

She thoroughly enjoyed the experience, not just studying at the Gregorian, a premier Catholic institute of learning, but living with a Sacred Hearts community and just walking through the streets of Rome, all full of historical and ecclesial riches.

Upon her return, Sister Regina Mary was assigned to Maria Regina Parish and School in Gardena, California which the Sisters had come to serve in 1958. She was assigned to the 6th grade with 98% of co-ed students from black families. She described her students as perpetually in motion and quite a challenge, but she thoroughly enjoyed them. She became principal of the school, and the school and parish thrived.

Years later, the Sisters were invited by the Brothers to join two Sacred Hearts Brothers, Fathers William Petrie and Michael Shanahan, who were working in India under the banner of Father Damien

with Mother Teresa’s groups. Sisters Regina Mary and Rose Henry Reeves ‘60 volunteered for this mission which would take them to India to do leprosy eradication work and to develop communities of Sacred Hearts Sisters to serve the people of India.

After serving in India for 8 years, Sr. Regina Mary was recalled to Hawaii to serve as Provincial of the Sisters in 1995.

She has been serving in the administration of the Sisters and on the Academy’s governing Board since that time.

Sr. Regina Mary’s message to the Academy: “Listen to what God wants of you. It is He who knows what we need more than we know ourselves! I have been blessed by the presence of the Sisters, and the love of the Eucharist, expressed in Adoration, is what they gave not only to me, but also to my parents and family. Thank you, Sisters!”

Sister Helene Wood, SS.CC. ’59 Known as one of the “Centennial Sisters”, and also celebrating her 60th anniversary, Sr. Helene’s story is awe-inspiring through dedicated roles in education, and her travels around the world as General Councilor.

A STUDENT OF THE ACADEMY since she

was 5, Sarah Ann Wood considered the school her second home. Her two sisters, Elizabeth Wood ’54 and Alexis Wood Kane ’67, were also 13 year students. She remembers there being many Sisters at the school and only 3 or 4 lay teachers.

She was especially impressed seeing the Sisters in the chapel replacing each other

at adoration every half hour and involving the students in the spirituality of the Congregation.

Besides her studies, Sarah Ann Wood had a special duty as a senior—she was the school’s official bell ringer. She rang the bell to begin and end the school day and at the beginning and end of classes and recesses. The bell was at the end of the second floor lanai of the administration building. One day after ringing the bell to end school, Mother Mary Gertrude, the Superior of the Sisters, said to her: “Sarah Ann, the Sisters tell me you would make

She was going to be a pilot and had already been accepted by a university that had a program for pilots. Her love for planes came from her father who was a civil engineer at Hickam Air Force Base. But she kept thinking about Mother’s words, and she said to herself, “I can always try the religious life and if I don’t like it, I can always leave.” So she tried it and 60 years later celebrated her Diamond jubilee as a Sacred Hearts Sister in 2021!

Sr. Helene, as Sarah is now known, and

Sr. Regina Mary entered the Congregation in 1959, the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters in the islands. They would, thus, be known as “the Centennial Sisters”.

Sr. Helene attended Chaminade University and received her Bachelor’s degree in History; later she received her Master in Education degree from the University of Hawaii, all the while engaged in teaching at the Academy. She loved Hawaiian History and was instrumental in having it added to the school’s curriculum. She especially enjoyed teaching with Betty White and team teaching on the Vatican Council II which took place in the 60’s.

On the retirement of Sr. Mary Rose Gordan, Sr. Helene was named principal, witnessing, appreciating and encouraging the growing role of dedicated lay men and women as teachers and staff at the Academy.

In 1979, she was appointed Provincial of the Sisters and after 8 years in this position, she went to Santa Clara University and received a Masters in Pastoral Ministry.

While finishing her studies at Santa Clara, Sr. Helene was elected to be a General Councilor for the Congregation which meant she would travel the world visiting the communities and works of the Sisters. Her desire to be a pilot would be fulfilled in a more meaningful

way: “Instead of being a pilot, I came to understand cultures of people and the works of the Sisters in education and caring for needs of people,” shares Sr. Helene.

For today’s Academy student, she advises each of them to take advantage of the many opportunities they are offered and to work very hard to succeed.

However, she shares “They need to realize that they succeed not by themselves nor for themselves, but with and for other people. They need to cherish teachers and classmates and realize that the school’s Mission is not just to develop leaders, but leaders who make a difference in the lives of others.”

SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY’S

record of academic excellence, enrollment demand, prudent planning and responsible fiscal management have set the stage for it to embark on upon the Building our Future: Educating Girls to Change the World Campaign with the goal of raising $3.1 for renovation of five projects on campus. This endeavor will bring to life the academy’s master plan for the next generation and answer the need for rejuvenated gathering places for the development of our talented dynamic students.

In these next few pages, you will learn about the renovation of our “Sacred Places” including the Grotto of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Margaret Mary Chapel. In “Spaces to Gather and Learn” you will also see the Innovation Center come to life under the imagination of Cathy (Rodrigues) Lee ‘83. In addition, the Academy will also be upgrading The Early Learning Center, High School Conference Room and Administrative Wing and Faculty Lounges. A Gymnasium Sky Box will be built for “Spaces to Gather and Cheer.”

Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu Meet the man behind “The Tseu Innovation Center”, whose generous gift started our “Building Our Future” campaign.

I

N JANUARY 2021, Dr. Lawrence Tseu started a serious dialogue with Sacred Hearts Academy Board Chair, Shelley Cramer. Shelley launched the idea of developing an “Innovation Center” on the lower school campus that would be a creative center for students in grades 1 through 12 to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).

Dr. Tseu made a significant gift towards the project, which is now named, “The Tseu Innovation Center”. This generous gift was the impetus of Sacred Heart Academy’s “Building our Future” Campaign, a $3.1 campaign to renovate several areas on campus.

Dr. Tseu remains very active in the community and has served on several boards in Hawaii and at the University of Oxford, where he is the chairman of the Tseu Medical Institute. Dr. Tseu is now a member of the Academy’s Capital Campaign committee and continues to share his expertise and wisdom to help make this latest capital campaign a success.

Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu was raised in Kalihi, O‘ahu and put himself through high school by shining shoes. He graduated from St. Louis College in 1951 and joined the U.S. Air Force for the next four years during the Korean Conflict. After his service, he attended Brigham Young University and graduated in 1958. He then went on to graduate from Northwestern University Dental School in 1962 and was later the recipient of the prestigious Alumni Merit Award from the University’s Alumni Association.

Following graduation, Dr. Tseu opened his own private practice of cosmetic dentistry in Honolulu in 1963, and in the process garnered honors as one of the America’s Top Dentists by the Consumers’ Research Council of America and Honolulu Magazine. He ran a successful practice for nearly 50 years before retiring in 2011.

Cathy (Rodrigues) Lee ’83

Distinguished Alumna and one of Hawai‘i’s top interior designers, Cathy (Rodrigues) Lee ’83, pays it forward with her creative brilliance in designing the Academy’s first STEAM environment—The Innovation Center.

T

TICK, TOCK, TICK, TOCK. Cathy Lee ’83 stands in Sacred Hearts Academy’s new Innovation Center, her mind racing. The soaring, light-filled room is familiar to the Academy alum—years ago she was a student here, in Mrs. Lopez’s biology class, the clock on the wall a constant reminder that she was behind. Though biology was one of her favorite classes, Cathy’s mind wandered if she wasn’t conducting experiments or doing other hands-on activities, and her pen filled the margins of her notebooks with doodles and poems.

“Miz Rodrigues, would you please pay attention?” The rejoinder always snapped her back to reality. Today, standing in the same space, it’s a far different reality for an alum who soared despite—and because of—her unconventional learning abilities.

Now a successful interior designer, Cathy was tapped to redesign this room, and as a gift to her alma mater, she waived her professional fees.

environment, taking to heart its underlying lessons and forming lasting friendships.

She can still recite favorite cheers from her years on the cheerleading squad and laughs about her multiple infractions for wearing her skirt too short. It was at Sacred Hearts, where she enrolled in her sophomore year, that Cathy realized that she learned differently from others. Classes in traditional areas were often frustrating, but she excelled at creative writing, speech, art, photography—anything that encouraged outside-the-box thinking.

Coupled with her own creativity and personality, the combination of strong discipline, moral values and work ethic instilled by her parents and the Sisters and teachers at Sacred Hearts Academy would take Cathy to the top of Hawai‘i’s interior design world. Here, the girl who couldn’t sit still in the classroom became a teacher. Through her own company, Cathy Lee Style, she led interactive design workshops that taught thousands of local homeowners how to style their own spaces. For years she was the featured design expert on KITV’s morning news program, Good Morning Hawaii. Her weekly column, Celebrate Style with Cathy Lee, ran in the Sunday editions of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. For her career achievements, philanthropic contributions and community leadership, Cathy in 2014 was recognized as one of the Academy’s Distinguished Alumnae. In 2018 she ended up where she never dreamed she would be: delivering the keynote speech to 110 girls at the school’s 2018 commencement ceremony.

When she learned that Dr. Lawrence Tseu had made a significant donation towards the renovation of her old science classroom, Cathy knew she wanted to pay it forward. The Innovation Center would be the academy’s first STEAM environment, giving girls the tools and space to collaborate on science, technology, engineering, art and math projects. “It was a deeply personal project for me because I

I am proud to be empowering Academy girls to embrace their uniquely beautiful minds and soar to new heights.” didn’t just want to design a space for great students to excel,” she says. “I wanted to design a space where girls like me could also discover that their brain is a beautiful thing—and that when they can harness all that crazy creative energy, their potential is limitless.”

Envisioned by Cathy, Sacred Hearts’ new Innovation Center would be

inclusive. It would speak to girls of all ages and learning abilities. Symbols on the back wall—the universal symbol for female overlapped with the SHA logo, a lightbulb and an infinity sign—tell Academy girls that with imagination, they can do anything. A giant dry erasable art wall lets students imagine (and color) outside the lines. Tables that are rearrangeable invite collaboration with peers. They’re also height-adjustable for students from kindergarten to high school; a grassy area in a corner invite play by younger girls. A “Thinker Cloud” light sculpture with laser cut symbols draw the eye up to remind girls that tech and other STEAM subjects are as wide open to them as to boys. For students like Cathy, who was constantly shaking her leg and tapping her pencil, there are even “fidget chairs” specially designed to help students calm their bodies and engage their minds.

Today Cathy smiles at the irony: A girl who often felt one step behind has designed Sacred Hearts’ Innovation Center. “I am proud,” she says, “to be empowering Academy girls to embrace their uniquely beautiful minds and soar to new heights.” 
