T SACRED HEARTS ACADEMY
we are always looking to advance our students’
ability to adapt, navigate uncertain situations and be creative in addressing the needs of our time. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has put their ability, and that of our faculty, staff and leadership, to the test. Last spring, students and faculty alike had to shift from school on campus to school online at a moment’s notice. In May, we held the Academy’s first virtual
commencement. This fall, students online are in the same classes with students who are on campus. And we’re doing it all with enhanced health and safety features and procedures in place. Without a doubt, our faculty and students are amazing. They take on the challenges of school during the pandemic with grace and ease. This year in particular, though, being able to provide a Sacred Hearts education has been dependent on the support of many others in the Sacred Hearts Academy ‘ohana … parents, grandparents, alumnae, friends, community partners, staff and the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts. This issue of The Academy highlights those who have contributed financially to the school during the last academic year. And it features stories of a donor, Glenda Rother, a scholarship recipient, Ondina Hiel, and our Development Director, Angie Golis-Yamamoto. We’ve also included a piece on one of the Academy’s most heralded retired faculty members, Sr. Georgene Perry. Your support of Sacred Hearts Academy is especially appreciated in this difficult time. Gifts of cash, securities, personal property or life insurance proceeds provide a valuable resource which the Academy uses to support and enhance programs, improve facilities, deliver professional development for faculty and provide scholarships for students.
The Academy welcomes gifts of real estate transferred during a lifetime or by will.
The Academy encourages donors to explore the possibilities and opportunities for creative gift planning. The Academy can assist donors in a variety of gift considerations to meet their individual needs.
Many companies offer matching gifts to an employee’s charitable contributions. This benefit can double an employee’s gift to the Academy. Inquire with your employer to see if the company offers a matching gift program and obtain the proper forms to forward to the Academy.

first met Glenda Rother when Betty was a young bride and her attorney husband, Emmet, was mentored by Glenda’s now deceased husband, Phillip. Per Betty, “Glenda was the office administrator for her husband’s law firm during a time when women were not excelling as many are today.” Through her work in the law firm, Glenda went on to be a member of the Soroptimist International of Waikiki Foundation (SWIFI) whose work is to improve the lives of women and girls through education and empowerment. SWIFI raises funds to assist girls and women to achieve their dreams through the many awards that they give annually.

Betty served as president of SWIFI and did great work for the club,” Glenda shared, “We named her woman of achievement.” Though Glenda did not have any daughters, girls education is very important to her. Glenda said, “Girls getting a good education allows them to do anything that they set their minds to, and the Academy is a great place for them to do that. The Academy motivates girls and gives them the inspiration and support.” Glenda continued, “It is my hope that the Academy will continue to provide girls and young women with an exceptional education and the character to become future leaders.” Mahalo Glenda Rother for showing “The Power of One” through your generous scholarship contributions. It is through your gifts that Sacred Hearts girls, who would not otherwise be able to attend the Academy, can become proud Sacred Hearts graduates.

Ondina Hiel ’20
Recent graduate Ondina Hiel ‘20 shares her gratitude for the many opportunities made possible for her through supporters like the Trimble Scholars program.
O
NE GIFT CAN SPARK AMAZING RESULTS— as with Ondina Hiel,
’20—one student who excelled in the Arts at the Academy. When I was researching high schools to attend, I was drawn to the Academy’s private, all-girls educational environment with so many different courses available, especially the Language and Arts opportunities. It also was convenient and “fit” since I participated in various extra-curricular programs in town, and, it didn’t hurt that my sister, Maria Hiel, ’18 was already enrolled at Sacred Hearts! As a freshman, I immersed myself in the Academy’s Performing Arts program.

Dance is one of my passions. I have been dancing since I was really little, for over 13 years now. I love dancing because styles like ballet are very challenging and hard on the body, but beautiful to experience. For four years, I was a member of the Academy’s Dance Program, and I totally loved dancing in the school’s studio, which is beautiful

and so large. Because it is pretty new and because of its size, it is an awesome place to practice. Studios this spacious in Hawai‘i are really rare. In fact, this past fall, we even measured and taped out the entire stage at Mamiya Theatre for The Nutcracker. We got to practice and master choreography in the space it would actually be performed instead of having to “visualize” parts of the pieces – what a treat!
I’m not sure what my future holds but am confident that my faith and character will serve as guiding lights in my life after the Academy.” This year, I also was able to take Ceramics courses for the first time at the Academy. The Art Studio, with a number of pottery wheels and kiln, was also an awesome space. In ceramics, I was able to choose what to do. I was able to create something using my hands – instead of primarily my feet! Creating ceramics pieces allowed me to center myself, which made me better in other life areas too. In reflection, I am grateful for all those who provided opportunities for
me to excel at the Academy – Gordon and Sonia Trimble, who founded the Trimble Scholars program I was a part of, the faculty and friends who “loved on me,” the supporters who made the Arts programs have spaces for artists like me to practice our craft and my family who have supported me through all my adventures and experiences. I would not be the person I am today without the people and opportunities I have been given. It has changed my mindset about being a “woman” and has given me
“sisters” and friends for life! I just graduated from the Academy this May, and I’m now attending UH Manoa, where I am a Provost’s Scholarship recipient. I’m not sure what the future holds but am confident that my faith and character will serve as guiding lights in my life after the Academy. And, I know there are great things on the horizon for me as I start the next chapter of my life as a broadcast journalism student with performing arts aspirations!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
“The Power of One.”
A
a loyal donor called me to ask how Sacred Hearts was doing. She has no other affiliation with the Academy but has always been devoted to supporting girls and young women. “Are we surviving COVID-19?” she asked, and “Are the girls back at school?” She does not read email or mailers that show up at her home, and she was checking in because she was about to make her annual donation of $10,000 to the two scholarship funds that she supports. “The Power of One.” Last year, a trustee for one of our deceased alumnae called to let me know that he was sending the Academy a check for remaining funds of her estate that she left for Sacred Hearts Academy. “The Power of One.” During our Annual Giving campaign this fall, a new staff member walked into my office and gave me a $5 bill for the cause. Again … “The Power of One.” There have been many stories in the three years that I have been at the Academy that speak to “The Power of One,” and so it continues to be the perfect theme for our development efforts. Every gift, large or small makes a difference. One gift put together with others may pay for “design thinking” building sets for our Early Learning Center children, or provide art supplies to expand creativity in the elementary school, or allow high school students to experience hands-on learning through being part of robotics competitions. One gift may pay for a student’s tuition for the year and provide her memories to last a lifetime. I am excited to see students back on campus working together while wearing masks and keeping social distance. It is so nice to see the excitement students have being back at school. Most importantly, I am grateful for the generous support that each of you provided this last year to help fulfill the mission and vision the Sacred Hearts Sisters established over 111 years ago. “The Power of One.” Your support of Sacred Hearts Academy is especially appreciated in this difficult time. For graduates in the 1970s through the 1990s, one teacher is mentioned in every one of those conversations: Sister Georgene. “Sister Georgene knew all of her students,” an alumna shared, “and she has such an amazing memory that she will remember you and your story if you see her today, many years after you were a student at the Academy.” Sr. Georgene is herself an Academy alumna and started her Academy experience as a student. “There was really great family spirit among the girls when I was in school,” Sr. Georgene commented, “… a real sense of unity.” But Sr. Georgene credits her family for her initial connection to Sacred Hearts. “In my grandmother’s house there were two big pictures, one of the Sacred Hearts and one of Jesus and Mary. When I was 8 or 9 years old, I would sit and look at those pictures. My mother inspired me to always look to the hearts of Jesus and Mary. And the faith life of my mother and father enabled me to become one of the members of the Sacred Hearts Congregation.” Sr. Georgene taught at the Academy from 1954 through 1956, and then she taught at St. Patrick School across the street

If you are able to put those together, you will live with grace in your heart.” for the next seventeen years. She returned to the Academy in 1975 and remained a faculty member until her retirement in 1997. During that time, Sr. Georgene taught theology, history and English. “I love teaching,” Sr. Georgene shared, “and I loved the girls very much. I wish I was still able to teach at the Academy.” “Every child, for me, is a gift of God,” said Sr. Georgene. “Every child is unique. I got to know each one individually: their faith life, their journey, and their service to the community. I tried to instill in them the love of Christ in their heart. Heart to heart, and love to love, and hope to hope. The most important things are faith,
hope and love.” Sr. Georgene has this thought for us … “My message to the Academy community is ‘joy’. Experience joy in Jesus, joy in others, and joy in yourself. If you are able to put those together, you will live a life with grace in your heart!”

HE CLASS OF 1970 IS CELEBRATING OUR 50TH CLASS REUNION
and we were so looking
forward to celebrating these happy and joyful days with the Class of 2020, but that was not possible due to COVID-19. We were the last class to graduate on the Academy campus under the big kiawe tree in the middle of the grounds. Life on campus was very different: no organized sports, no gym, and PE consisted of wearing a white
jumper. We had many hopes, dreams and plans for our future. We can honestly say not much turned out the way we thought it would. 50 years ago, most women stayed at home to get married, have kids and raise a family. Thank God we
were lucky enough to choose things that brought us joy. We were able to have those things and were also able to become doctors, lawyers, executives, educators, kumus, engineers or where ever we ended up. In 1970 the Vietnam War was being fought, and the “ERA” equal rights for women were being
challenged in the U.S. Senate. This period in history changed our lives. The birth of the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance started. University of Hawai‘i developed the Hawaiian Studies program, the Hokule‘a was born and the first telescope was built on Mauna Kea. We all rocked out to Creedence Clearwater, Keola & Kapono Beamer, Nohelani Cypriano & the Beatles. We did not have computers when we went to college or when we started working. Thank God for this invention. How could we live without our laptops and phones, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Zoom and the internet? This is how our class stays in touch with each other. Some of the women we did not spend time with while in school bring a smile to our faces as they communicate with each other and are strong independent leaders. It has been our JOY to renew friendships from 50 years ago and to appreciate how special our lifelong SHA friendships have become. The Class of 2020 will be stronger, more assertive, more successful than we could ever imagine. So here we are 50 years later. How lucky are we, some of us still working because it brings us JOY. Many of us retired taking care of grandchildren, working out, running, spending time with friends and family, playing golf, tennis, pickleball, travelling (not now), sewing (face masks), crafting, dancing, gardening, taking classes, volunteering, helping others or doing all those things we dreamed of because it brings us JOY. We are making new friends and learning new skills. Most of all we are happy and enjoying life with friends and family full of laughter and JOY. We are blessed to still be here to share this time in your life.
