Get A+health this schoolyear!
Kick off the new school year right with these tips:
1. Stay up to date on immunizations
Not only does this protect your child from illnesses like the flu and other diseases, but it helps them stay healthy throughout the year, so they have more days of classroom learning and fun.
2. Backpack safety
A full backpack should not weigh more than 10% of your child’s weight. Heavy backpacks cause neck, shoulder and back pain, causing long-term problems. Get a backpack with two straps and cushioned padding.
3. Reduce screen time
Limit screen time (all devices) outside of doing homework, to two hours a day or less. Social media can create stress/anxiety and make it hard to sleep. Instead, engage as a family. Play a game, go for a walk or talk about your day.

HEALTH NEWS AND TIPS FROM SABAN COMMUNITY CLINIC VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2
Many may think a dietitian teaches people how to diet, but it is helping patients unlearn dieting and harmful food rules. Melissa helps patients prevent and manage chronic conditions by adopting sustainable lifestyle changes. These lifestyle changes require consistency and patience but have lasting benefits. Health should not be temporary and with Melissa’s guidance, patients can meet their health goals and learn habits that benefit the entire family.

Health tip 1: Snack mindfully, not mindlessly
Don‘t eat your snack directly from the bag or container while you scroll through Tik Tok. Instead, pour a serving into a small bowl and enjoy your snack while not watching screens. You will be more satisfied and aware of what you’re eating.
Health tip 2: Balanced meal
Carbohydrates are essential for a healthy diet. Choose carbohydrates high in fiber, such as vegetables, beans, lentils and whole grains, and pair with protein rich foods, such as low-fat Greek yogurt, nuts, eggs, cottage cheese. Try low-fat Greek yogurt with carrots and apples for a quick snack.

Ask our Doctor of Dental Surgery: Dr. Van Anh Dastur
Regular dental checkups for school-aged kids are important to prevent cavities, the most common chronic disease in this age group. Cavities can cause pain, difficulty eating, speaking, and even absences from school. Dr. Dastur enjoys every opportunity to educate and empower all patients, “Our team of dentists and dental assistants, work together at every appointment to assess our patient’s cavity risk and suggest good oral health habits that our patients can adopt for healthier teeth and a healthier mouth. It’s a standard that we practice at Saban to engage and motivate our patients.”
Here are some tips from Dr. Dastur to create an A+ dental appointment.
1. Timing is everything
Time of day can make or break a young child’s appointment. If your child is used to a nap or has a tough time waking up after a nap, take that into consideration when booking your appointment.
For older children, avoid cramming in a dentist appointment right after school or camp, they may not have the energy or capacity to handle a dental visit.
2. Be honest
Parents should be aware of how they communicate with their children about dental visits. Instead of making promises like “it will only hurt for a little bit,” encourage your child to ask the dentist any questions they may have. Our pediatric dentists specialize in providing pain-free care and can help your child feel comfortable and at ease during the visit.
3. Keep it cool
If your child becomes upset during the visit, work together with the dental team to address their concerns and reduce anxiety. Let the dentist lead the conversation and jump in when necessary to help build a positive relationship between your child and the dentist. Our pediatric dentists are committed to providing trauma-free visits for both children and parents.
