HEALTH & WELLNESS

Five Ways to Create (and Maintain) Healthy Habits At the start of a new year (or whenever you're ready for a change), it's common to set new health goals, such as eating healthier, being more active, and managing stress better. Unfortunately, many people find that their motivation fades after a few weeks. Research shows that the key to lasting change isn't willpower or perfection, it's building habits that work within your real life. Here are a few tips to help you build healthy new habits this year (and stick to them.) Start Small One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change everything at once. Instead, choose one small habit that feels easy and realistic. For example, drink one extra glass of water each day, take a 10-minute walk, or add one vegetable to a meal. Small actions done consistently lead to significant progress over time. Connect New Habits to Existing Routines Adding a new habit to something you already do (often called "habit stacking") can make new habits easier to do consistently. Examples of habit stacking can be: after brushing your teeth, say a few positive affirmations in the mirror. Or, after dinner, take a short walk around the block. When habits easily fit into your day, you're more likely to do them every day. Focus on Consistency, Not Perfection Missing a day doesn't mean you've failed. What matters is returning to the habit the next day. Progress happens through regular effort, not doing everything perfectly. Be kind to yourself and allow room for flexibility.
