Dear Members,

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

James (Jim) McClymont

I trust that 2024 finds you all safe and in good health. The current economic climate likely has many of you reassessing your financial situations, and the Board and management of your club are no exception. As we navigate the post-Covid era, we are confronted with rising interest rates, utility costs, and the general cost of living. However, our commitment to maximising benefits for members and fulfilling our social responsibilities to the community remains a key focus.

I am immensely proud of the extensive investments our club has made in our communities across all age groups and demographics. From infant swimming classes to seniors’ sporting activities, our impact is far-reaching. Initially taken aback by the scale of our contributions, I’ve come to realise the profound difference we make, not just in our own community but also in extending support to others during times of crisis, such as bushfires and floods.

Our commitment to giving back extends beyond mandatory contributions. We take immense pride in surpassing mandatory contributions by more than double in crucial areas, channelling support to numerous deserving causes through our Club Grants scheme and other forms of assistance. However, like many clubs, we’ve inadvertently overlooked shining a light on

these uplifting endeavours. Moving forward, I am determined to champion the remarkable work our club does within our communities.

One of our flagship endeavours is our sponsorship of the Amyloidosis Foundation, borne out of personal loss within our club community. Thanks to our substantial donations and the dedicated efforts of our members and medical professionals, progress has been made in combating this disease. Similarly, our support extends to numerous other charities and organisations, including Ryde Hospital, Care Flight, the Cancer Council, and more.

In closing, I urge you to take pride in the significant impact your participation at our club has on the lives of others. Your loyalty enables us to continue making meaningful contributions, and for that, I am truly grateful.

Thank you once again for your unwavering support I look forward to seeing you at the club.

Warm regards,

A.Douglas D.Petkovich JO’Brien P.Moujalli H. Bell VICE PRESIDENT C.Pozzato CEO G.Aggett M.L.Chapple S.Broughton J.F.McClymont PRESIDENT BOARD

CEO’S REPORT

Dear Members

I hope that you, along with your friends, and family, as well as the broader community, have been enjoying the club and its vibrant social atmosphere throughout 2024. Creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for you, your friends, and families remains our utmost priority at our Ryde Eastwood venues.

In recent months, we’ve been actively engaged in ongoing discussions with our members regarding our collaboration with the council on the crafting of the West Ryde – Meadowbank Renewal Strategy, aimed at shaping the future of our community and showcasing its unique offerings.

In several recent meetings with council representatives, including CEO Wayne Rylands, we’ve collaborated on a shared vision that promises mutual benefits for our members and the broader community. Critical aspects of our discussions have revolved around Ryde Eastwood’s pivotal position within the community, our substantial contributions to its well-being, and our alignment with the council’s overarching vision and developmental plans for the area. Furthermore, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and briefing esteemed councillors including Roy Maggio and Bernard Purcell. Their support extends not only to our club’s endeavours within the community but also to our vision for future offerings and growth.

In the upcoming weeks, we plan to continue our efforts to connect with members, sharing insights into our vision for both the club and the broader community. Your valued feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the club.

The May Journal boasts an exciting array of promotions and offerings for our valued members including shows, meal deals and members draws. Commencing this May, we’re launching our much-anticipated $150,000 Cash and Car draw. I enthusiastically urge our members to renew their memberships early to gain bonus entries into this exciting draw.

As well, this journal edition features details on an additional $24,000 in promotions, highlighted on page 6. These include our weekly draws, providing more opportunities to secure additional entries, and our monthly draws offering the chance to win one of six car keys. Winning a key directly qualifies you for participation in the major draw.

Club Thirroul is thrilled to announce the nearing completion of its outdoor extension, featuring a dedicated kids’ area, extra seating, and improved alfresco spaces. This expansion aims to elevate the experience for both members and visitors. As winter approaches, exciting food specials are on the horizon, along with monthly draws offering various prizes like cash rewards, holiday getaways, and key giveaways throughout June and July.

Additionally, we congratulate the Lady Bowlers on their recent regional playoff victory and wish them the best as they prepare for the State Finals.

Finally, I would like to thank all members for being part of the Ryde Eastwood group, and for your continued loyalty and support.

FOOTBALL Report

Welcome to the 2024 season. It’s great to have the greatest game back on TV, the interest this this year has been amazing!

This doesn’t stop there, and our teams have been right back into it. NSW Rugby League has recognised the value and interest in the competition we compete in, and are now broadcasting 1 game per week live, with a TV program now dedicated to the Ron Massey Cup. Please visit the NSWRL website for more information.

The squad this season has changed a fair bit. We lost some players that were a significant part of our club, for many years. Some of those being former captain Mitch Gray, Brad Cousins, Langi Suli-Ruka, Tyler Seymour & Kirk Patten. We would like to thank them for what they did for Ryde Eastwood over the years and wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

We have gained a lot of experience. We had a major coup in the off season, by signing Hymel Hunt. Hymel played professionally for 11 years in the NRL. He played 113 first grade games at 4 different clubs (Gold Coast Titans, Melbourne Storm, South Sydney Rabbitohs & Newcastle Knights) and a test match for Samoa. Other key signings are Steve Taupau (Manly Sea Eagles), Noah Ryan (Canberra

Raiders), Vaiala Tamati (Sydney Roosters) Ray Maroun (Wentworthville Magpies), Johnny Lee Gabrael (Newtown Jets), Jake Kusto (Wentworthville Magpies), Pena Leveleve (Fiji).

Our season is underway for our Major Competition Teams. After a long pre-season and a couple of trials against last year’s premiers St Mary’s and Hill Bulls, the players were ready for the season to start.

After both teams made the semi-finals last season, we are hoping to continue our improvement this season.

Ron Massey

• Round 1 - We played against a very formidable outfit in the Canterbury Bulldogs. We scored 3 tries in the last 10mins to get a courageous victory 22-18.

• Round 2 - We played against Glebe Dirty Reds (who have a pathway with Sydney Roosters). We didn’t start great after conceding 3 quick tries & to be trailing 16-0 after 20 minutes. But again our never die attitude showed but unfortunately we gave Glebe a lead that we couldn’t quite reel back. We went down 30-22.

Sydney Shield

• Round 1 - We played against Moorebank, who have a pathway with the Bulldogs. We

were the dominate team throughout the game & never looked like losing. We won 36-22.

• Round 2 - We played against Glebe Dirty Reds also. The first half was a very tight game with Glebe kicking a field goal on the stroke of half time. We went to the break leading 13-12. The 2nd half was a different story with our class shining through. We didn’t concede a point. We won the game 34-13.

We are again playing out of TG Millner this season, so please come down and support our club. You won’t be disappointed! Again, we are fielding teams in the Junior League. These teams will be from Under 18s up to A-Grade. These teams are for players who would like to continue their dream of playing NRL and for the players who just play for the enjoyment and being there competing with their mates.

We wish Carlingford Cougars, North Ryde Hawks, Holy Cross Rhinos and Dundas Shamrocks all the best for the upcoming season.

COMMUNITY UPDATE

The first quarter of 2024 has seen us involved with some key Community initiatives. It is always pleasing to get out and about to visit some of the wonderful groups we support or are able to host at the club, some of these are below.

World’s Greatest Shave

Adam Gardiner Foundation Visit

On Friday 16 February a group from the Board and Management visited Westmead Hospital to hear from Dr Fiona Kwok from Westmead Amyloidosis Clinic. We learnt how our funding over the last 5 years has helped in supporting your research and what has been achieved in a short time. When Adam Gardiner was diagnosed with the Blood Disease Amyloidosis very few people knew what this was and how it could be treated, now there is a lot more understanding and help for people with this disease. We are very proud to be part of this incredible journey with the Adam Gardiner Fund. We also took the opportunity to present Tricia Gardiner-Wilson and Westmead Amyloidosis with our 2024 cheque for $70,000.

World’s Greatest Shave is an annual event at the club with our resident hairdresser Si, taking the stage with our brave participants. This year two of our staff Luke and Ben shaved off their locks in support of the World’s Greatest Shave and the Leukemia Foundation in their fight to cure blood cancer. We also had a hair colour station where members and guests could get their hair coloured for the event. It was wonderful turnout and we raised over $1,000 on the night.

Family of League Sportsman’s Lunch

Friday 15 March we hosted a joint Sportsman’s Lunch with the Family of League with the theme of Rugby League – Australia to the USA. This was on the back of the historic NRL Double Header in Las Vegas where we had a panel of some of the greats who played in the 1987 State of Origin (4th game) in the USA. MC Renee Gartner hosted a panel including Cliff Lyons, David Boyle, Paul Dunn and Denis Fitzgerald. It was a great opportunity for our Junior League teams to connect with these legends and each other. All proceeds of the day went to the great work The Family of League do for families in Rugby League.

GOLF CLUB

Enjoy competitive and friendly rivalry

Our 4th February trip, the first for 2024 started out with a sunny day with light winds and choppy seas. With 11 people on board, we headed north, Robert the skipper said to take plenty of sinkers. The reason being the dreaded Toad fish. Everyone lost at least 4 sinkers, the only excitement was Doug’s long battle with a 3.6kg Gummy shark. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the worst day of fishing in the clubs history. Nic caught the biggest fish a 1.5kg Sargent baker winning the RELC red wine and Doug Orr the biggest bag at 2.6kgs also getting the coveted RELC red wine. Total boat catch was 24 fish at 14.6kgs.

The 3rd March trip had 10 on board with a late 2 cancellations. Weather was good with moderate southwest wind and a 1.5 metre seas. Fishing started well at inner pine at 55 metres deep, the conditions soon deteriorated for the rest of the day with stronger winds. Patrick Ng got the biggest fish with a 0.92kg Morwong and Dimitris the heaviest bag at 4.9kgs. It was an ordinary day in the end with 53 fish at 24.5kgs.

The Fishing club organises monthly deep sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Sam Sundar on 0413 000 303 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 8pm except December.
