PRESIDENT’S REPORT

FOOTBALL REPORT

Dear Member, The year 2013 was a very eventful year for Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club with a number of projects on the Board’s Agenda. The highlight, from a personal point of view, was the 50th Anniversary Celebrations for the Licensed Club and the Football Club, held in October. Having been involved with both Clubs since their inception it was a great honour to be involved in all the celebrations to mark the 50th year for both Clubs. As part of the celebrations the Club unveiled a plaque to mark the contribution of the NSWRL, The NSW Leagues Clubs Association and the many Leagues Clubs who helped us with financial support in our early struggle. That plaque is now proudly on display in the prefoyer area of the Club alongside the acknowledgment to our foundation members. December 2013 saw the Draft Development Control Plan for the Hawks on Second site being approved by Council. This plan sets the control guidelines for a Development Application for Residential Development (townhouses) and the Club has already started that process, with the aim of construction commencing in the second half of 2014 (subject, of course, to all necessary approvals). Also in 2013 we commenced the preparation of a masterplan for the future development of the Club and adjacent properties that the Club owns. This is a complex process and may take some considerable time, and that is just to complete a concept masterplan. The ultimate aim is to provide a blueprint for the best use of the Club’s major assets in a manner that will be for the long term benefit of Club members, both present and future. The second car park lift, scheduled for completion by Christmas, has been delayed, but hopefully will be up and running by the time members read this report. 2013 also saw the election of the Liberal/National Federal Government and with that has come some common sense changes in relation to proposed ATM withdrawal limits, which were to come into effect on 1st February 2014. On the community front my August 2013 report noted the Club had committed to support the Adam Gardiner Foundation, which provides support for sufferers of Amyloidosis. This is an umbrella term that describes diseases caused by abnormal deposits of the protein amyloid in the body (a type of bone marrow disease). Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club will help the foundation concentrate their fundraising efforts and support the clinic at Westmead Hospital. For 2014 we look forward to ensuring your Club is an enjoyable place to visit and thank you for your support. I hope all members have a very happy, healthy and safe New Year. Keith Aggett President

2014 will again see Ryde-Eastwood District Rugby League Football Club as major sponsors of the West Tigers VB State Cup team. The 2014 competition opens on 8th March with the West Tigers taking on Illawarra at Win Stadium. The 2014 draw also provides a few opportunities for Tigers fans to see all 3 grades on a Sunday at Leichhardt oval, NRL under 20’s and VB State Cup (now doesn’t that bring back some memories). The first of these games is on Sunday 6th April vs. Manly, so mark that in your diary. Along with our major sponsorship of the State Cup Team the Football Club and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club are major supporters of Junior Rugby League in the area. In 2013 the combined Clubs (leagues and football) provided over $133,000 towards Junior Rugby League throughout the district, including a substantial contribution towards players insurance. The support covers all levels of Junior Rugby League, from Under 6s in junior clubs to junior development and junior representative squads. In 2014 the financial support will be closer to $170,000 and will include full coverage of insurance for Junior League Players ($50,000+) which we hope will lessen the burden for parents who want to give their children the opportunity to participate in this great game. The Leagues Club is also the major sponsor of the Balmain Referees Association, which this year celebrates 100 years of service to Rugby League in the area. There is a feature story on Balmain District Junior Rugby League on the following pages, as well as details on some great prizes to be won at the Club during the Footy Season.

Left to Right: NSWRL CEO David Trodden (also representing Balmain), Ryde-Eastwood President Keith Aggett and Brian Samphier from Easts Leagues unveil the plaque to commemorate the support of other Leagues Clubs in the 1960s. See page 5 for more photos of our 50th Anniversary celebrations.

BALMAIN DISTRICT JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE

The Balmain District Junior Rugby League was the first Junior League Association formed in Australia, and celebrated its 100th anniversary on 6th April 2008 at Birchgrove Oval. The Junior League has a proud tradition boasting many past NRL players such as Mark O’Neill, Dene Halatau (back for 2014), Bronson Harrison and present, Robbie Farah, Curtis Sironen, Aaron Woods and Luke Brooks, just to name a few. Although not as large as districts such as Penrith, Balmain Junior League punches well above its weight, and in 2012, Holy Cross Rhinos were hailed as the National Junior League Club of the Year! A fantastic feat considering the Club and Junior League were competing across every junior league in the nation! 11 Clubs make up our Balmain District Junior Rugby League with 2,500 players comprising 140 teams. The Junior League is extremely well supported by the Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club which assists so generously with grants for our players and Clubs, and the opportunity to hold meetings, training courses and functions.

2014. Registrations are now open and anyone interested in playing, coaching, refereeing or volunteering for a junior league club should contact their local Clubs on the numbers supplied. The Balmain Junior Rugby League is proudly sponsored by Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club along with other committed sponsors such as Coateshire, which proudly sponsors accreditation courses for coaches and trainers.

Balmain District Junior Rugby League Registration Day, Sunday 23rd February 2014 from 10.00am, Concord Oval, Loftus Street, Concord Each Club will have their own Shade Shelta and their members will have an opportunity to register to play or finalise registrations. • Meet NRL players • Come and Try Clinic • Fantastic opportunity to purchase at extremely good prices for this day only • X Blades Rugby League Boots • Mouthguards fitted by professional dentists • Personalised Head Gear

The Balmain Junior League competition gets underway on Sunday 6th April

The Rhinos host the Annual Benny Elias Shield Day for U6 – U8 players as a culmination to their season, which continues to get bigger each year, with this year having 47 teams participating on the day. We strive to ensure everyone can afford to play rugby league with very low registration costs. Everyone is placed in a team and we encourage all players, of any playing ability, to come down and give rugby league a go. functions THE FITNESS EDGE SWIM SCHOOL We are a family-friendly Swim School offering a broad range of lessons from 6 months of age up to adults, as well as catering for some swimmers with special needs.

Come and see the Swim School and help us to help your little ones learn the life skill of swimming and water safety, and perhaps encourage them to enter area carnivals when they get to school!

We operate our terms the same as public school terms, making it easier on our families, as everyone gets the chance to have a break and refresh for the next term.

CELEBRATING OUR SWIMMERS’ SUCCESS It’s the time of year when our swimmers get the chance to showcase their swimming skills in their school carnivals. We love to hear of their achievements, both individual and in relays, and share their success with the Swim School team. For swimmers with carnivals coming up, we wish you the very best of luck. Well done to all and please keep sharing your success with us. We love to see everyone doing so well.

Our success is demonstrated through the high calibre of our coaches and instructors, who not only strive to get the best out of their swimmers but also have fun in the process. All our instructors are Austswim qualified, and we pride ourselves on our teamwork, excellent teaching methods, our outstanding reputation within the community and the high level of success we have experienced within the swimming industry. The continual support and guidance we offer our families and our staff helps us to remain a Swim School with a personal and caring approach while keeping our focus on water education and safety for all. VACANCIES - BABIES AND PRESCHOOLERS The Fitness Edge Swim School has limited vacancies in our Babies and Preschooler Programme. These classes are designed to develop water confidence, water safety and survival skills through our friendly and encouraging Austswim Qualified infant instructors. Lessons last for 30 minutes and are payable by the term. Our baby classes range in age from 6 months to 3 years, and a parent or care giver is required to join the class with them. Our pre-school classes are for children from 3 years of age, and provide the first opportunity for them to swim on their own, with a maximum of 4 swimmers in the class and their qualified Austswim instructor. To join the Fitness Edge Swim School one parent is required to be a member of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club. Membership is available at main club reception.

INTERNAL CLUB NEWS CAMERA CLUB Our annual Christmas Dinner was a most fitting way to bring a very eventful year to a close. A most enjoyable evening was had by all. Members and their guests were able to view and enjoy many of the photographs that had been taken throughout the year. We said farewell to Murray Lowe, our retiring club President, and welcomed Yvonne Lemming as the camera club’s new president for 2014. We thank you Murray for your friendship, guidance and support. We thank Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club and its directors for their ongoing support and especially for the refreshments that they so kindly provide for us at each of our committee meetings and Monday night meetings. We look forward to 2014 and the new creations, presentations, and outings that will be there for us to enjoy. Among the outings the club will provide is a bus trip to Camden Village, and the Hunter Valley Gardens. An evening of night photography at the Rocks has been organised. For many club members this is an opportunity to experience a different kind of photography with the club group providing a safe and supportive way to venture into a new world. Come and be a part of this experience. Among the many areas of photography that we will be covering are the fields of Photojournalism, Photographic Portfolios and Night Photography. But the most important role that the Camera Club plays is the support of its members as photographers. We enjoy capturing images and are always striving to capture that special moment. Our first meeting for 2014 will be held at the RELC on 10th February at 8pm. Come and join us. You can find out more about out club and its activities at: www.pbase.com/relccc. John Maynard CHESS CLUB The club’s annual Bobby Fischer Cup “rapid” tournament (20 minutes per player plus 10 seconds per move) was won by Arthur Huynh, with Julian Kuan and Donato Mallari equal second. The U1600 division was won by Vince Chiara, with Fiona Shen second and Kevin Shen in third place. The Club Championship finals are complete, with Egon Cardenas and Arthur Huynh finishing as equal winners. Lorenzo Escalante and Francis Pacey were equal third, Chris Ball fifth, and Rob Watson sixth. While the club championship finals were taking place, the Ryde-Eastwood Classic tournament was held for the other players, and was won overall by Donato Mallari. The Division 2 winner was James Hickey. At the club’s prize-and-dinner night in December, in addition to all tournament placegetters, awards were also presented to Egon Cardenas for “Most improved” and Rob Watson was awarded the President’s Award. As always, new players of any standard are welcome on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Visit our website at www.rydeeastwoodchessclub.blogspot.com. Contact Les Mikolajczyk (0412 970 059), Rob Watson (0408 463 759) or Greig Edwards (9858 3731 or 0416 248 223). EUCHRE CLUB The Euchre Club celebrated the end of year with a dinner in the Golden Hawk Chinese Restaurant. Patron Paul Moujalli and his wife Dianne attended with 50 members and their partners. A great night was had by all. Hearty congratulations to our yearly winners: 1st Ivy Hitchens; 2nd - Rhonda Fekete; and 3rd - Margaret Campbell. Congratulations also to our monthly winners: October - 1st Ivy Hitchens; and 2nd - Maria Lea. November: 1st - Jim Marshall; and 2nd - Peter Lamberton. The Euchre Club takes this opportunity to thank the Management and staff of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club for their help and assistance during 2013, and wishes all a healthy and happy 2014. The Euchre club extends a warm invitation to experienced Euchre players to come along on Wednesday evenings to the Willandra Room. Games commence at 7.20pm. THE FISHING CLUB What a wonderful end to the fishing club year of 2013. Our November outing was very rewarding for our ten members on board with 31 Morwong caught in a total of 67 fish weighing in at 31.2kg. Michael caught the biggest fish, a 3kg morwong and Majid the heaviest bag at 6.7kg. On our December outing, all records for many past years were broken. We caught 91 fish with a combined weight of 51.3kg. Steve Adamson caught a whopping snapper, weighing in at 6kgs and 72cm long. The charter boat skipper said it was the largest snapper landed on his two charter boats in the last 20 years. Naturally Steve Adamson takes out the Keith Aggett trophy of Fisherman of the Year with the big 6kg snapper. As usual, ‘Mr Consistency’, Michael Cheng, wins the L.J. Hayes trophy with a total of 52.5kg of edible fish. Gary Lee came a close second with 47.2kg and Nic Ceh third with 34.6kg. The fishing club organises monthly deep sea fishing charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested club member should contact Michael Cheng on 0449 518 357 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Upcoming outings are: Sunday 2nd February; Sunday 2nd March; and Sunday 30th March. Fishing Club President – Trevor Fahey.

SENIORS CLUB We hope all our members and Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Staff had a peaceful Christmas and enjoyed a happy and safe New Year. A big thank you to all members who supported us so well in 2013, and the Leagues Club staff who at all times were most helpful and obliging. Our Christmas Lunch was again well supported and a great success. Our thanks go to everyone involved. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 20th February and we hope all our members will be able to attend. We are expecting 2014 to be as busy as 2013 with many bus trips envisaged, as well as Tafe lunches etc., and of course our Solo players who play once a week at the Club. We hope to be able to welcome many new members to the Seniors Club, but of course our thanks go to the faithful members who have been with us since its inception in 2000. We meet in the Function Rooms on the first and third Thursday of each month at 11am and our annual fee is $5. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.

GOLF CLUB The final round of our championships was battled out at Windsor and congratulations to the day’s winner Colin Cope on beating Keith Chan on count back. Congratulations to our club Champion for 2013, Greg Webber, and our A grade winner, Tony Tedesco, and B grade winner, Slava Sokolov. Muirfield hosted a multiplier event, not a favourite amongst most players. Valery P. and Eric Tsui may disagree, as they took out the honours. Our runner-up pair was Kaye Henderson and Alan Dale. Richmond hosted the President’s Cup and congratulations to Valery P., who beat Alex Sokolov on count-back. The final of the Guzzler’s Cup was held at Cabramatta, with our congratulations to Ulla Wood (maybe a crystal champagne flute would have been more appropriate)! The ‘event of the day’ honours went to Ulla Wood, A Grade, and Natalia P., B Grade (Cabramatta seems a favourite with the Girls). Our runners-up were Henry Urbanski, A Grade, and Billy Chick, B Grade. As always, Hams Day was full of prizes. Congratulations to Eric Tsui & Alan Dale on countback (big ham winners), and Slava Sokolov and Keith Chan (smaller ham runners up). Other winners were third place for Steve McElhinney & Henry Urbanski, fourth place went to Robert Wood & Brian Ewin on countback from Alan Henderson & Tony Tedesco, who were a respectable fifth. Congratulations to Keith Chan on best individual score on the day. We have already started all this fun again in 2014. Don’t forget to check the website for full results at www.relgolfclub.com. Good golfing til next time! Annika INDOOR BOWLS Congratulations to Bob Bale, Ray Katt and Don Birt, who were successful in winning the men’s state competitions in October 2013. Congratulations also to the following members of Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club’s Indoor Bowls Club: Irene Mulcahy, who won the Consistency Award for the women’s Wednesday group, and Patricia Petty who was runner-up. And to the winners of the Consistency Award in the Thursday night mixed group, Claire Grebert (Ladies), and Alfredo Peleaz (Men’s). The end of year Christmas dinner and lunch functions were well-attended and enjoyed by all. The Indoor Bowls Club looks forward to another successful and enjoyable year in 2014. New members

SQUASH CLUB Well, we have just completed another year of squash. The Spring Competition concluded in November, but as I mentioned in my previous report, for this competition we only had one team competing, the Division 8 team, which finished in a commendable 4th place. Great job team, nice effort this competition. On a social note, the Annual Presentation dinner was held in November at Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club, and a great night was had by all. It was great to see all the happy faces there again this year. Thanks to the great organisational efforts once again of Ernie and Bev Speed. Happy New Year to all and we will see you all in the New Year (2014!!!!). Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Leagues Club one again for its ongoing support of the Squash Club - it’s wonderful to know we have your support. Remember, we are always looking for squash players so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a Thought: “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” TRAVELLING BOWLS CLUB Hello Members. We trust your Christmas and New Year was a safe and happy one shared with family and friends. Our Christmas dinner was another enjoyable function held in the Golden Hawk Restaurant, with Sidney providing a marvellous menu. It was stated at the dinner that the Secretary and Bowls Secretary positions will be vacant at the AGM meeting, and nominations are sought to fulfil requirements as per our constitution. All members have received advice about the date and time of the meeting. We look forward to your attendance. Please contact Marie Crawley on 9684 1023 or Bob Freeland on 9644 4792 or mobile 0427 003 038. TRAVEL CLUB We trust 2014 will be as successful as last year. We have some great events planned. We held our Christmas lunch on 12th December in the Ryedale room at the Club, and all our members had a very enjoyable day. The table decorations were superb. Our thanks goes to our President, Yvonne. In mid-January we had a great get-together for lunch at Wings. And we will be taking in the scenery on Sydney harbour in February, enjoying lunch on our harbour cruise. In March we head for Kurrajong for a guided tour of the Radio Museum, with lunch at Richmond. As we head into winter we will be spending six days in the Snowy Mountains, staying at Jindabyne. As always, we welcome all new members. Shirley Wheadon, Secretary. 9888 7704

INTRODUCING… Travelabout’s Solo Travel Club

KIDS MOVIES

Do you like cruising? Are you a solo traveller? Do you not travel because you don’t have friends who want to travel? Or they can’t afford to travel? Maybe they’ve already been to places that you want to visit? Do you want to travel with other solo travellers? Do you find the single supplement (or single cost) unfair and too expensive? Would you like to cruise with other single people? Possibly join a small group of people on a cruise? You may get the opportunity to share a cabin and save the single supplement. Travelabout is proposing regular monthly meetings where you get to meet other solo travellers. Register your interest for possible cruises. Regular meetings with guest speakers.
