Dear Member,
With the financial year now at an end, it is again time for those of our members who have to pay tax to file the necessary papers, and I hope all will receive refunds.
Our financial year also ended on 30th June and early indications point to another solid year’s trading from our Club. As I have stated in numerous reports the end result comes down to many factors, including good management from C.E.O. Chris McCarthy and his team and most importantly you the member for your continued support.
I am pleased to report at last that the carpark opposite the Club has now been resealed and linemarked. This carpark is under the control of Rail Corp and we have been in constant correspondence with them for nearly four years regarding an upgrade for commuters and club users alike. While it has been a long time coming the end result is a first class job.
The “Hawks” Development Application is still with Council at the time of writing and hopefully will be finalised very soon.
The Sportsmen Lunch for the Adam Gardiner Fund was a great success. The event made nearly $12,000, which goes to the running of the Amyloidosis Clinic at Westmead Hospital. Our Club is honoured to be the major sponsor of this Fund which supports the work of specialists in the battle against Amyloidosis (a rare blood disorder which affects the proteins in the body).
I would like to acknowledge the efforts of staff members Hanz Mendez, Chris Kalligas, Karen Stansfield, Juan Gonzalez, and Samantha Ishizuka who, by their quick action helped revive a club member who suffered a heart attack in the Club recently. Medical staff that later treated the member praised their work and stated that in their opinion, their actions saved the man’s life. It is good to know that the club has well-trained, dedicated staff on hand to assist in an emergency. Well done to all those staff involved.
In conclusion, on behalf of the board, management and staff may I again sincerely thank all members who support our Club, and I hope that you continue to enjoy the facilities we provide.
Keith Aggett. President

We have been busy and involved with many and interesting photographic activities. For many members, the presentation of the photographic areas of Photojournalism, Photographic Portfolios and Night Photography was a new experience. We were fortunate to have excellent presenters who were able to guide and explore these fields of photography for us. Night photography was a very hands on experience down at the Quay and the Rocks. The field of Photojournalism was presented to us by a professional photojournalist. Members then went off to put into practice the guidance they had been given. Our photojournalist then came back to view and judge our images. This proved to be a most worthwhile experience for us all. Photographs were presented that even we were surprised with. Members are finding the Photographic Portfolio a challenge, but again, with guidance and support of one who knows and is happy and able to share their expertise, the journey is a most rewarding one. We have discovered that there are so many ways to explore and enrich our photography. Come and join us and be part of these opportunities. At our presentation evenings, digital evenings, committee meetings and competition nights we are so very well looked after by the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club with tea, coffee and biscuits. If you are disappointed with the judge’s decision regarding your wonderful photography, you can always share a cup of coffee with good friends. You can find out more about our club and its’ activities at: www.pbase.com/relccc. John Maynard

Winter is now upon and the Autumn fishing months gave us a mixed bag. The May outing had good weather and plenty of fish, 75 in fact, weighing 36kg. Also a record number of 13 pig fish were caught. Garry Le had the heaviest bag with 7.1kg and Winny had the biggest fish, a 1.1kg Morwong. Our June outing had a change of weather, 3 metre swells and cold and wet underfoot. Only 23 fish were caught for a total weight of 11.3kg. Two of our seasick members, Peter and Daniel, did well. Daniel caught the heaviest bag of 2.2kg while Peter caught the most morwongs, two in total. The AGM will be held on Thursday 17th July 2014 at 8pm. Membership
dues of $10 for the year are now due. The fishing club organises monthly deep-sea charter boat fishing trips on the first Sunday of most months. Any interested Club member should contact Michael Cheng on 0449 518 357 or attend the monthly fishing club meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 8pm. Fishing Club President, Trevor Fahey

It is with great sadness that one of our Committee Members, Wal Harrison, passed away on Thursday 3rd July. Wal had been on the Committee since its inception and was loved by everyone who came to know him so well. Our condolences go to Joan and family. We are now half way through the year with exceptionally warm and dry weather to add to the enjoyment of our bus trips and monthly walks. We had a very interesting tour in May with our guide taking us around Middle Harbour. Some of our members had not been there for many years while others had never been to that part of Sydney. In June we had a bus tour around the Old Prince Henry Hospital and spent time in the Nursing and Medical Museum where we had a very informative talk from four nurses (now retired ) who spoke of their time in the hospital and the doctors’ inventions and academic achievements. What a wonderful place the museum is, filled with extremely old medical instruments including an iron lung in which a lady spent thirty years of her life, old wheelchairs, a dentist’s chair together with instruments used fifty years ago. There was a huge
collection of nurses uniforms through the years and didn’t they look smart. We had a further tour of the non-denominational Commemorative Chapel for the nurses that had worked at Prince Henry Hospital with the most beautiful stained glass windows. Afterwards we had a delightful lunch at the Yarra Bay Sailing club. We held our annual Christmas in July lunch at Waterview Restaurant, Berowra Waters, and were blessed with beautiful weather, good company and the venue
overlooking the water Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food and the great entertainment by Joey Fimmano who sang, played the keyboard and piano accordion –what a great artist! An excellent day out was had by all. We have more trips planned for the next few months and members from Ryde-Eastwood Leagues Club who wish to join us on our bus trips are most welcome. A card game of Solo is played every Thursday at 1.30pm for our REL Senior’s Club members. Our annual fee to join the REL Seniors Club is $5 and we meet on the first and third Thursday of each month at 11am. For more information please contact Marie Weston, Secretary, on 9638 7419.
At the time of writing we are just entering the final round of the Autumn competition. As I mentioned in the last report, we have 3 teams competing (Division 6, Division 7, Division 10). The positions are very similar to last report, with one exception - well done Div 7, equal 3rd!! A great comp by all players. Division 6 (1st) Division 7 (Equal 3rd) Division 10 (5th). Just a quick reminder to all players that this year the internal Club Championship round robin will be played at the completion of the Autumn competition, so get your games played. This is held once a year and is a great chance to play against better players, so get involved. This is a great opportunity to ‘SHINE’ and win a great prize. Good luck to all who have entered. Let’s see if we can have few upsets this year. Finally, thanks to the Leagues Club for its ongoing support of the Squash Club, which is very much appreciated by all the players. Remember, we are always looking for squash players, so if you are interested please contact Ernie Speed on 9807 3348. Just a quote: ‘Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.’
Our last trip was to Umina Bowling Club in June where we had a lovely time and the bowlers thoroughly enjoyed the day. We also had six non-players who also enjoyed the bus trip and the outing and our numbers were up. Due to unforseen circumstances the scheduled outing on 27th July 2014 to Towradgi has been cancelled. On Sunday 14th September we are off to Avoca Beach Bowling Club. Hopefully the weather will warm up and we can have a great day in the sun and on the greens. Dress code is bowls uniform. Then on Sunday 9th November 2014 it’s off to Ettalong Beach Bowling Club we go, our last trip for the year, so please come along and join us and support the Travelling Bowlers - the more the merrier! For any information please contact Marie Crawley on 9684 1023 or Brenda Paterson on 8819 9650 or Maria Armstrong on 9878 5656. Happy Bowling!
