Chairman’s Column Dear members, Living in the Edmonton region, you get used to cold temperatures, snowfall, and sometimes periods of extreme cold! While this year hasn’t been the worst on record, I’m always happy when RV Show season rolls around because it signifies that spring is around the corner and people are beginning to make plans for warmer weather camping. Attending an RV show is a multifaceted experience, providing entertainment, education, and the chance for our customers to make informed decisions about RV ownership. This year’s shows have featured new technologies, showcased eco-friendly solutions and smart technology. The RV Shows are also a great way for our consumers to connect with the broader RV community. Attendance at the shows has been steady, which should bode well for this RV buying season.

Many dealers have noted that their Pre-Owned inventory is on the rise. Buying a pre-owned RV can offer several benefits. We know that many of our customers are looking to get more value for their budget, making this a viable option for many consumers. The RV retail sales statistics compiled by Statistical Surveys Inc. are the result of matching manufacturer VIN numbers with RV registrations. The RVDA of Canada endorsement agreement includes free access for national monthly figures only, for members only. Shaping the Future: RVDA's Advocacy Efforts Gain Momentum! RVDA of Canada's continued efforts to engage parliamentarians' awareness of the challenges faced by the RV industry are viewed favorably in several areas. Continuity is deemed crucial at all levels of government, at the grassroots level, and across all political parties.

(L) MP Ted Falk

(Third from Right) MP Rob Moore

The annual parliamentary advocacy day, organized in partnership with the Canadian Camping and RV Association (CCRVA), facilitates over 30 meetings with Parliamentarians, Senators, and staffers annually to discuss critical industry issues. These meetings are strategically arranged to ensure participants are paired with Parliamentarians in their respective constituencies or provinces. Participants receive briefings on key industry issues and government support opportunities. In 2023, RVDA of Canada emphasized to Parliamentarians the impact of the pandemic on the RV industry and urged for essential post-pandemic recovery actions. This advocacy resulted in the successful acquisition of an Electronic Logging Device (L) MP Tony Baldinelli (ELD) Exemption for RV Drive-Away/Tow-Away deliveries from Transport Canada. Recognizing the importance of data-driven decision-making, RVDA of Canada is committed to providing updated economic impact metrics to drive ongoing advocacy efforts. Moving forward, the

association aims to expand outreach efforts in underrepresented regions and increase media engagement to amplify advocacy initiatives. Summer Outreach The goal for the 2023 summer was to capitalize on the momentum gained during the successful Hill Day in April 2023. MPs met by RVDA of Canada members in Ottawa showed eagerness to continue fostering relationships with local business owners in their ridings and communities. RVDA of Canada initiated grassroots outreach in early July to MPs representing constituencies with RVDA members. Meetings occurred predominantly in dealerships, providing MPs and their staff with insights into operations, dealership employees, and the economic vitality of small businesses. While members shared key RV industry statistics with MPs, RVDA of Canada aimed for organic interactions, central to its long-term advocacy strategy. These non-partisan grassroots engagements are pivotal for building lasting connections with potential Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries.

Increase engagement in Eastern Canada: In the future, RVDA of Canada aims to boost engagement with underrepresented provinces in summer outreach, such as Québec and the Maritimes, recognizing their significance as potential political battlegrounds in upcoming elections.

MP Michelle Ferreri at Dee Jay Trailers

Increase media engagement: Members who have met with MPs are encouraged to request photos or videos to share on social channels. Some MPs have already shared pictures of their meetings with local dealers. Generating grassroots content is essential to generate more buzz and interest in RVDA of Canada and the RV industry's activities, outreach, and policy advocacy efforts.

2024 Advocacy Campaign

To jump-start the 2024 advocacy campaign, RVDA of Canada actively engaged in pre-budget consultations held from December 12, 2023, to February 9, 2024. Members participated in surveys conducted between January 17 and February 2, 2024, to pinpoint their advocacy priorities. Combining member feedback with recommendations from RVDA of Canada, the campaign aims to play a pivotal role in the RV industry's ongoing recovery from the pandemic and ensure the continued success of the RV and camping sector in Canada. 2024 Pre-Budget Recommendations 

Increasing support for skilled workers RVDA recommends that the federal government commit to increasing its support for Skilled Workers by making education more accessible. Due to educational programs largely being centered in Western Canada, the Government should create an Apprenticeship Travel Grant to make continuing their education more affordable. This Grant should be targeted towards those students enrolled in programs that are not offered within a reasonable distance to their home. SAIT Period 1 Apprentices

2. Supporting our National Parks and Tourism Sector This investment is essential for enhancing visitor experiences, improving accessibility, safety, and enjoyment. Currently, 75% of campsites lack necessary services for RVs, including adequate electrical infrastructure. Upgraded trails, roads, and facilities not only promote eco-friendly tourism but also stimulate job growth, economic development, and support local communities 3. Facilitating the growth of the RV industry Inflation, rising interest rates, regulatory constraints, and ongoing supply chain disruptions, are examples of economic hurdles that are projected to be more substantial, widespread, and enduring than expected, exerting pressure on growth in the foreseeable future. To alleviate these difficulties, government support for short-term and long-term infrastructure needs is crucial. This includes ensuring access to electricity and charging infrastructure in campgrounds nationwide. 4. Amending the Excise Tax Act (ETA) RVDA of Canada recommends that the federal government amend the Excise Tax Act, to resolve the ambiguous application of Goods and Services Tax/ Harmonized Sales Tax based on where the goods are released into Canada when imported. More details on the recommendations for the 2024 Budget. As RVDA of Canada continues its tireless efforts to engage parliamentarians and raise awareness of the challenges confronting the RV industry, its impact reverberates across all levels of government and political spectrums. Through strategic partnerships and annual advocacy days, RVDA of Canada facilitates critical dialogues, ensuring that key industry issues are heard and addressed. The successes of 2023, including securing an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Exemption, underscore RVDA's commitment to driving tangible change. Looking ahead, RVDA of Canada remains steadfast in its dedication to data-driven advocacy, expanding outreach efforts, and amplifying its message through increased media engagement. With a focus on innovation and collaboration, your national association continues to shape the future of the RV industry and advocate for its continued success.

Engaging Today's Youth: Exploring Apprenticeship Opportunities in the RV Sector As our industry continues to evolve, so do the pathways for young individuals seeking to explore rewarding careers. We're excited to shine a spotlight on apprenticeships and how they're shaping the future of skilled trades, particularly in the Recreation Vehicle sector. How Apprenticeships Work Apprenticeships in high schools have undergone significant transformations, offering students more opportunities than ever before. These programs are carefully designed to prepare students for skilled trades by integrating career exploration, planning, and practical skills into the curriculum. There are three types of apprenticeship programs: 1. Youth Apprenticeship • Dual-Credit (also known as Youth Train in Trades) Program gives youths a jump start in their apprenticeship and post-secondary journey through a partnership with schools boards, postsecondary institutions and industry. Designed exclusively for students in grades 11 and 12, these programs allow students to graduate with their high school diploma and a post-secondary credential or course credits. This program offers in-school training ONLY. Recreation Vehicle Dual-Credit program is offered through SAIT in Calgary, AB. • Registered Apprenticeship (Youth Work In Trades) Program

The Youth Work in Trades program offers students the opportunity to kick-start their apprenticeship career from grade 10 through 12. This unique initiative seamlessly integrates paid work -based training with a provincial curriculum, emphasizing the practical application, reflection, and enhancement of essential workplace skills, safety practices, work ethic, and job readiness. Enrolled students not only earn credits towards their high school diploma but are also registered as apprentices (employer-sponsored) with their respective Provincial Apprenticeship Authority. It's noteworthy that this program exclusively focuses on hands-on work-based training, and no inclass training is included, providing a direct and practical pathway toward the attainment of provincially and nationally recognized industry trades credentials. This program is arranged through Provincial Apprenticeship Authorities.

2. Pre-Apprenticeship (also known as foundation program) The Pre-Employment program is gateway program for those aspiring to the field of Recreational Vehicle service. Catering to individuals without prior skilled trades experience, it equips them with hands-on skills, mechanical aptitude, and effective problemsolving capabilities. Distinguishing itself with versatility, the program integrates aspects of 27 designated trades while molding students into well-rounded professionals. Covering diverse skills, from pre-delivery inspections to troubleshooting, the curriculum aligns with the apprenticeship model, preparing graduates for the first-year apprenticeship program and Trade Qualification (TQ) Apprenticeship Exam. The foundation programs are offered at Okanagan College in Kelowna, BC and SAIT in Calgary, AB. 3. Formal Apprenticeship The 3-year apprenticeship program for RV Service Technicians is meticulously designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of recreational vehicle systems and components. Spanning three levels, each lasting 8 weeks, the program ensures a well-rounded education and hands-on experience.

Level 1 establishes a solid foundation, covering essential topics from applied mathematics to critical RV systems. In Level 2, apprentices deepen their expertise in exterior construction, accessories, and safety, exploring electrical and appliance systems. Level 3 elevates skills to a professional level, incorporating specialized training in hydraulics, slide-out systems, and advanced appliance servicing.

Page 15

This comprehensive program is tailored for individuals with diverse interests in skilled trades, providing an exciting and multi-skilled career path for those enthusiastic about Recreation Vehicles and outdoor recreation. The structured learning approach seamlessly blends on-the-job training with apprenticeship education, covering crucial aspects such as workplace safety, electrical systems, appliance operations, and more. Upon successful completion, participants not only attain journeyperson status but also have the opportunity to take the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam. A successful outcome in this exam signifies that the skilled technician meets rigorous industry standards, possessing the essential skills and competencies required to excel in this trade across Canada. It's a journey into a dynamic and rewarding career with a recognized and respected professional designation. • Apprenticeship programs are offered at Vancouver Island University, Okanagan College, SAIT and Fleming College (September 2024). Benefits for Students Participating in a youth apprenticeship program offers numerous benefits for students. Not only do they gain valuable hands-on experience, but they also develop essential skills, work ethic, and workplace discipline—all while earning a wage. Additionally, students can engage in part-time trade work throughout the school year, earning high school credits and accumulating on-the-job hours that count towards their journeyman certification. As RVDA members, you play a pivotal role in fostering the next generation of skilled workers. By hiring youths, promoting apprenticeship programs, participating in career fairs, and collaborating with apprenticeship agencies, we can provide young individuals with early exposure to the RV sector. This investment not only secures our industry's future but also empowers youths to embark on fulfilling career paths. Let's unite in supporting apprenticeship initiatives and guiding the next generation toward success. For more information about apprenticeships, contact Anita Lien, Director, Marketing & Communications at RVDA of Canada.

Five Jobs description hacks for engaging the right candidates HR leaders can improve their hiring process by recognizing its weaknesses and creating effective job descriptions. This sets the groundwork for successful future hires, benefiting hiring managers and the organization in the long run. At Randstad Canada, we aim to support HR leaders and hiring managers in building successful future workforces and companies. We've compiled five tips to enhance engagement and the quality of applications for open roles in hiring managers' inboxes.

1. articulate what it is you want from a new hire

Do more with your job description than craft it to describe your needs accurately. Reflect on past employees that didn’t work out, issues related to knowledge gaps, or why they weren’t a cultural fit. Then, articulate what hard skills, soft skills, or personal qualities will ensure a candidate's success. The written job description should focus on the future goals for the role, not just the immediate duties. Deloitte suggests using competency-based role profiles instead of detailed job descriptions.

Newsletter

Page 17

The focus should be on core, functional, and leadership qualities rather than a lengthy list that is hard to sustain over time. This approach helps candidates better adapt to a changing work environment. For example, you might want to avoid inserting the name of your analytics software as a prerequisite. Instead, include a statement like “ Interprets data and applies insights from enterprise analytics successfully.” After all, you can train talent on software skills. This way, you ensure you capture this skillset in your pool of candidates, even if the analytics software you use changes in time. Have a colleague or friend review your posting if you’re unsure whether you’ve achieved these things with your job description. Ask them if they provide feedback based on their understanding of the role Looking for effective strategies to retain and attract top talent? Sign-up now to receive our exclusive best practice guides and expert advise directly in your inbox on a regular basis. Stay ahead of the competition. 2. optimize writing job descriptions for digital environments

Online job seekers can flip between dozens of job posts in mere seconds, seeing both bad and good job descriptions. In other words, they have options and multiple job boards to choose from. They rarely spend time reading an entire job description if parts of the text abruptly turn them off. Online seekers also use various devices. Failing to optimize job descriptions for these devices excludes many potential candidates. Here are some tips to ensure your job descriptions are easy to read and desirable to attract the right candidates who are browsing online: • • • • • • •

use Google Trends to create job titles, terms, and phrases your ideal candidates are most likely to search for use bullet points and keywords that capture readers’ attention as they scan multiple posts use large, purposeful subheadings often to aid readers as they skim your post use bold words — sparingly but meaningfully — to draw attention to certain text be concise and precise, transmitting only necessary information and required skills put the most attractive information near the top of the job description don’t use jargon, acronyms, “all caps,” or callouts like “WANTED” or “HURRY!”

Page 18

Newsletter

Before you launch, check the efficacy of your job description by checking the posting using multiple devices. We can help you write your job advertisements so that they are as effective and relevant as possible. contact us 3. make the job posting attractive — not overbearing Grab the attention of qualified candidates with the first three lines of your introduction. Connect with them personally by being different from your competitors, displaying empathy, and briefly getting your brand culture across. Then, rather than highlight the rigorous aspects of the job, highlight the opportunities and benefits they could enjoy. The “responsibilities” section of your job description should tell job seekers what they need to do for your company and what they get to do. That means focusing on the positives and helping candidates visualize themselves in that role. The difference is subtle but significant. Do more to highlight the amenities and benefits the job provides as well, without including real salary details. Simply writing a “competitive benefits package” isn’t enough. Recent research by Ipsos shows that salary range is particularly important to professionals, men (58%) and women (55%). Why not be upfront with your salary range, benefits and perks and add it to your job description? According to our most recent Employer Brand Research survey, the perks that matter most for employees are: • • • • •

attractive salary and benefits work-life balance job security pleasant work atmosphere good training

4. help candidates find the right job for them, not the other way around Helping candidates find the right job sometimes means ensuring poor candidates turn away from your own.

Newsletter

Page 19

Your goal is to find the right balance between turning away unsuitable people from applying in a healthy way. A good job description should entice the right candidates to continue through the application process. Always draft a truthful conclusion with a call to action, but set realistic expectations about the next steps. Including instructions for multiple, tedious application steps can turn away good candidates and poor ones. Redesign the call to action with your ideal candidates’ strengths in mind. This will provide a better experience forthem while decreasing the chance you will engage the wrong people. 5. advertise your company culture and your brand Candidates aren’t just interested in filling a role. They’re interested in partnering with a company that will bring them long-term satisfaction and growth. Increasingly, job seekers align their personal growth with a healthy corporate culture, industry best practices, and social responsibility. In this way, starting a new job is like starting a new life, no matter how many years of experience they have. By describing life inside the company, you’ll help candidates picture themselves as part of your team. These types of details reinforce your company’s brand and can help set you apart from competitors. The job description is prime real estate — don’t waste it with a generic company boilerplate description. Showcase your company to stand out from your competitors in the eyes of potential hires. You may tip the scales for high-value candidates exploring multiple options.

Is The Alure of the Status Quo Holding You Back? By Dave Kahle I am in the middle of a sales manager’s training class. Inevitably, as we methodically examine the best practices of effective sales managers, someone is going to comment, “We do it like this……” and then dismiss everything we’ve just discussed. It doesn’t matter if the process we are discussing has been proven to be more effective, or that it is the result of some dedicated people studying the issue. “We do it like this….” ends the conversation. That knee-jerk reaction is understandable. While, in my case, the issue is a best practice for a sales manager, the issue is larger and more common than this narrow application. Whenever we confront a process, tactic, strategy or tool that is more effective -- whether it is our personal life or our business structure – our knee jerk reaction is often the same: Find a reason to dismiss the change and thus absolve yourself of the responsibility to do it better.

The status quo is comfortable. When we consider changing it, our hearts pump harder, our palms become a bit sweatier while our heads search for multiple reasons why it will never work and shouldn’t be considered. Is the status quo automatically better than a well-researched, well thoughtout, proven process that will cause you to change your behavior in order to get better results? Just because something is, doesn’t mean that it should be. How did that current process or practice come to be? I have worked with hundreds of businesses and found that very few processes and practices were put in place by a team of the best people strategically defining a process to get the best results.

Newsletter

Page 21

The reality is that the current position was probably put in place sometime in the undefined past, by people unknown, probably to address a crises situation. It got repeated and eventually codified into routines that eventually manifest as “We do it this way….” Most of the practices and procedures are there because they are there, not because they were strategically designed. So, why then is it so common to out-of-hand reject a change in routines without even considering the consequences? I suspect that the majority of humankind fears change and shuns the investment of energy and ego necessary to see it through. Not that this is new. Machiavelli said, “It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things.” Yet, what is true for most people is not necessarily true for all. There are people among us who are responsible for much of the progress in the world. They begin with a healthy self-confidence and are motivated by what I call the More Mindset. That’s a way of looking at the world and seeing that there is more to accomplish, more to become, and more to achieve than what is defined by the status quo. Add to that a seasoning of courage, and you have the recipe for a high-performing, successful person and an influential company. It takes courage to put your status quo up for inspection. It takes self-confidence to say, “There may be a better way.” And it takes the More Mindset to add fuel to the process. People so equipped won’t be dismissing any best practices with “We do it this way…”
