Chairman’s Column

Dear members,

In July, the RVDA of Canada Board convened for our most recent meeting. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated directors who took time out of their incredibly busy schedules to participate in critical discussions. Their guidance and expertise are invaluable in shaping our organization's strategic direction and ensuring its long-term sustainability. With their continued leadership, I am confident that our industry will not only overcome its current challenges but will also remain a fantastic vacation option for Canadian families.

We were also pleased to welcome representatives from our industry partners: the Canadian Recreational Vehicle Association (CRVA), Go RVing Canada, and the Canadian Camping and RV Association (CCRVA). In June, I shared that the industry had successfully finalized a comprehensive guide to RV industry definitions, aimed at clarifying ongoing misconceptions about who our industry represents.

Furthermore, I am pleased to report that the associations have jointly approved a letter addressing the issue of using RVs as an affordable housing solution. While we fully recognize the urgency and complexity of the affordable housing crisis in our country, it is crucial for government officials to understand why RVs and campgrounds are not a safe or appropriate solution for full-time residential use. We will continue to educate policymakers about the specific RV standards, campground infrastructure, and tenancy rules that make such practices unsuitable.

After nearly a decade of collaborative advocacy with our campground partners, MP Lianne Rood introduced Private Members' Bill C-410 in June. This bill seeks to amend the Income Tax Act, specifically regarding the tax classification of private campgrounds in Canada. Its passage would ensure that campgrounds are recognized as active businesses, qualifying them for the small business tax rate. This change is essential to rectify longstanding tax inequities that have unfairly impacted campground owners and operators across the nation.

Chairman’s Column

We encourage you to engage with your MPs this summer to underscore the importance of this bill. Your advocacy is vital to ensure that when Parliament resumes in the fall, there is strong support to move the bill forward towards royal assent. View the bill information here

As advocacy remains one of the strategic pillars of our association, we continue to actively participate in the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance's pre-budget consultations for the upcoming year. This process presents a valuable opportunity for us to communicate our priorities for the government’s next budget.

This year, the RVDA of Canada made the following recommendations:

1: Support for Skilled Workers: We urge the federal government to commit to increasing support for Skilled Workers. This will require investments in education, tax breaks for students and grants to help support the development of a more educated workforce.

2: Investment in National Parks: We call on the federal government to increase its investments in our National Parks by increasing the development of infrastructure and support for the Tourism Industry across Canada.

3: Enhancing Electrical Infrastructure: The federal government must continue to provide financial support to increase electrical infrastructure in rural areas to address current supply issues and prepare for future demand, including the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in campgrounds.

4: Amendments to the Excise Tax Act: We recommend that the federal government amend the Excise Tax Act, to resolve the ambiguous application of Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax based on where the goods are released into Canada when imported.

Earlier this summer, the RVDA of Canada proudly awarded $11,000 in bursaries to RV Service Technicians and Fixed Operation Personnel across Canada. Sponsored by NTP-Stag Canada, these bursaries, valued at $1,500, $1,000, and $500, were created to recognize outstanding achievements by students with a strong commitment to and passion for the RV industry. We extend our gratitude to all applicants for their submissions and encourage everyone to continue investing in their education.

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the summer,

Changing Workplace Ethics: A Guide for Modern Companies

Changing workplace ethics is more than just a buzzphrase. It's reshaping how businesses operate, from the boardroom to the shop floor.

When we think about workplace ethics, we look at the rules shaping how a business acts. This goes beyond just legal dos and don'ts. It's about the core values that guide an organization's behaviour. These ethics affect how a company treats its rivals, customers, partners and staff. They set the bar for professionalism and ethical behaviour at all levels.

At its heart, workplace ethics is about more than following rules. It's about building a culture of integrity, trust and respect. These qualities don't just add to a company's brand they define it.

talking with your wallet

Think about the companies you do business with. Would you buy something from a store you knew to be unethical? Honour, corporate accountability and trust are the guidelines for choosing who we want to be associated with.

As shoppers, we let our cash speak for us. Employee performance and behaviour in the workplace respond to a top-tier manager’s unethical behaviour. If a boss behaves badly, it can change how everyone else acts. Employees may lose respect not only for management but for the entire organization. They become disillusioned and disengaged when corporate culture is inconsistent or conflicts with their personal values.

a brief history of changing workplace ethics

Ethics in business haven't always been a big deal. Way back, it was mostly left to churches and social groups. They discussed things like child labour, fair pay and harsh working conditions.

Then things started to change. In the 1950s, we saw moves like President Truman's Fair Deal, which brought in ideas about civil rights and social responsibility. The 1960s shook things up even more. As society changed, companies started making their own rules about how to behave.

The next few decades saw more shifts. Workers started caring more about their values, and teamwork became the norm. By the 1990s, companies making shady choices were being called out. This set the stage for today, where we expect businesses to act right and keep a close eye on them.

The next few decades saw more shifts. Workers started caring more about their values, and teamwork became the norm. By the 1990s, companies making shady choices were being called out. This set the stage for today, where we expect businesses to act right and keep a close eye on them.

changing workplace ethics in modern society

These days, business ethics are shaped by our digital world. We're dealing with new issues like online fraud and data privacy. Plus, workplaces are more diverse now, and many of us work remotely or on our phones.

Take the 2022 Desjardins data breach in Canada. It affected over 9.7 million people, exposing personal info like names, birthdates and social insurance numbers. This huge breach showed that no company is safe from these risks. It also highlighted how work and personal lives often overlap in the digital age.

Cases like this push companies to step up their game. They need to set clear ethical standards and tackle these tricky issues head-on. The key? Being open, talking clearly and holding people accountable. That's how you build a workplace where ethics really matter.

drawing an ethical line in the sand

To build a solid ethical foundation, start by making it safe for staff to speak up about wrongdoing. Anonymous reporting can help. Then, train everyone on ethics, from the CEO to the newest hire. This way, the rules are clear to all.

When someone breaks the ethical code, act fast and firmly. Sometimes, you might need to let people go in a way that sends a clear message: ethics aren't just for show.

Good ethics start at the top. When leaders walk the talk, it spreads through the whole company. It's about building a place where doing the right thing matters as much as making money. This approach can boost employer-employee relations. Staff feel valued when ethics are taken seriously. It creates trust and respect both ways.

Companies that get this right tend to do well. They last longer, make more money and keep their employees happy. Good ethics aren't just nice to have in today's world they're a must for success.

Rapid Change is The Greatest Threat to Our Businesses and Our Careers

One of The 25 Most Important Things I’ve Learned

Recently, one of the members of my CBIG groups suggested I make a list of the 20 most important things I’ve learned in my 30 years of experience working with B2B sales organizations.

So, I created a list and discovered it to be far longer than 20 items. To narrow down the long list, I applied these four criteria:

1. It had to be an important lesson – one which has the potential to dramatically impact a person, a sales team, or a business not superficial or trivial.

2. It had to arise out of my personal experience. In other words, not something that I garnered from a book, or borrowed from someone else. Something I’ve learned in the trenches.

3. It had to have been tested in the caldron of real-world experience. No blue-sky stuff.

4. I had to unwaveringly vouch for its validity. These are concepts and lessons that I would stand behind.

Applying these four criteria, I narrowed the list down to 25. In no particular order, here’s one of them. Rapid change is the greatest threat to our businesses and careers.

Most leaders understand that the world is changing rapidly. The actual details are even more terrifying than that which we intuitively sense.

Our generation is facing change to such a degree that it is unprecedented in the history of mankind. Of course, individuals and small groups of people have lived through mind-boggling change. Time of war and natural disasters, for example, have uprooted groups and transported them to a condition light year away from where they started. But these changes have typically been the consequences of an event. After the event passes, the folks settle into a new situation.

Today, however, the changes are pervasive, systematic and continuous. Let me illustrate. The root cause of our changing situation is the increase in information. As information expands, it seeps into every area of our economy and culture and causes change. So, to measure change, track the growth in information.

There is a measurement called ‘the total amount of information available to mankind.” It is estimated that, in the year 1900, the total amount of information was doubling every 500 years. That meant that the world was changing relatively slowly. Our great grandparents, for example, probably lived in the same kinds of houses their parents did, worked at the same kinds of jobs, and interacted within the same kinds of social structures.

Now, fast forward to the year 2,000. The total amount of information available to mankind was doubling every two years. Imagine the growth in the pace of change! We went from it doubling every 500 years to it doubling every two years.

As a result, the world of the year 2,000 was changing much more rapidly than the world in 1900.

But what about now? Estimates indicate that the total amount of information doubles about every 30 days. Is it any wonder that we feel like the ground that we stand on is shaking? We’re overwhelmed and confused.

Richard Swensen, writing in his book, Margin, had this observation to share: “The spontaneous tendency of our culture is to inexorably add detail to our lives: one more option, one more problem, one more commitment, one more expectation, one more purchase, one more debt, one more change, one more job, one more decision. We must now deal with more ‘things per person’ than at any other time in history.”

That Margin was published in the year 2000 adds even more emphasis to the speed of change today. One can’t help but conclude that there has never been a generation of businesspeople who have had to deal with the pace of change moving as rapidly as our generation. It truly is unprecedented.

The potential consequences

Look around us and we see products that have become obsolete almost overnight, (remember the I-pod) and companies come and go (where Howard Johnson’s these days?). Disruptive technologies upend entire industries in the blink of an eye. (Anyone want to invest in taxi companies these days?) And now, the emergence of AI portends to usher in a world dramatically different than it was just a year ago.

While we can and do react to specific instances of change that impact us, few of us recognize that the pace of change itself is the greatest threat. We can, for example, respond to a new competitive product. But more important than that specific instance of change, we need to recognize that the pace of change will bring ever more new competitive products. Today’s instance is just today’s instance.

It’s like a piece of driftwood being swept along by an ocean current. We can see and respond to the driftwood, but the underlying current is far more extensive and powerful.

That powerful current threatens to upend our jobs, transform our industries, and warp our culture. The rapidly increasing pace of change is the single biggest threat to our businesses and our careers – and our personal lives – that we will face for the balance of our lives.

If we don’t effectively manage change, we risk our organizations and our lives being upended and rendered obsolete before we can respond. There was a time when an organization prided itself on being quick reacting. Today, if you wait to react, you are probably behind the curve.

Leaders need to build disciplines and processes in their organizations that pro-actively identify the ‘next thing’ before it hits. Unprecedented change calls for new thinking.
