Dear members,

The RVDA of Canada held its last board meeting on November 7, 2022 in Las Vegas, NV. This meeting serves as our Annual meeting and this year the board re-elected the same executive committee for a second term. I’m excited to be able to continue to serve our members and I look forward to the upcoming year.

During our meeting, the Board approved a new 3-year strategic plan. Our revised goals are listed below:

Advocacy: The RVDA of Canada is actively consulted in industry policy, political, and public matters, and is proactive in advocating policy that is in the common interest of RV Dealers across Canada.

Education: The RVDA of Canada facilitates a variety of training, recruitment, and educational programs covering all areas of an RV Dealership for RV Dealers across Canada.

Engagement: The RVDA of Canada has the necessary resources to provide expertise relevant to the RV industry to encourage the participation of all RV Dealers across the country.

Member Services, Benefits & Research: The RVDA of Canada provides services and benefits to assist RV Dealers through access to endorsed cost-saving programs and by providing RV Dealers with resources relevant to their business activities including authoritative RV retail industry research.

Association Excellence & Collaboration: The RVDA of Canada is a relevant national organization which continues to develop and revise its policies and procedures, advance its organizational structure and capacity, increase its resources to meet its changing needs, and work with the RV manufacturers and other groups in the RV industry on identified issues of common concern.

I’m also pleased to announce that the board approved the renewal of 2 endorsement partnerships with iA Dealer Services as well as with Wells Fargo CDF. These endorsement programs contribute to the financial viability of our provincial/regional and national RVDAs and we truly value the continued support from our partners.

We recently wrapped up the 2022 RV Dealers Convention/Expo at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. This year over 1810 dealers, exhibitors, and industry partners participated in the outstanding educational event. We were very pleased that dealers North America wide could take advantage of such exceptional education and networking opportunities. And now, the learning continues on the Virtual platform for the next 2 months. The virtual platform offers complimentary on-demand sessions from some of our best rated speakers. Please visit www.virtual.rvda.org to gain access to the additional education.

So how is the industry doing? We just released our Q3 Quarterly Economic Review which is intended to deliver a comprehensive look at the economic indicators affecting the RV industry in Canada. The report provides members with current economic information, which can assist you in gaining insights into the changing economic dimensions of the RV industry and the economy at large. We have revamped the report to give you additional economic indicators such as housing starts, interest and inflation rates as well as, tourism spending. We hope you like the new format.

And finally, I would like to congratulate Roland Goreski of Campkin’s Camping Centre on being awarded the 2022 RV Dealer of the Year Award. Congratulations Roland, very well deserved!

Wishing you a happy holiday season!

Business Strategies for Difficult Times: Utilizing the Gift of Slow Times

That sudden lull in frenetic activity presents us with an opportunity. Now, we have the emotional space, the time and the energy to think about things we haven’t thought about for a while, to imagine a future we haven’t dreamt about for a while, and to envision the specifics of more fulfilling tomorrow.

With that perspective, I have two suggestions for business strategies right now. Use the gift of slow time to:

• Do it Better

• Prepare to do it Differently

1. Do it Better.

It is likely that some aspects of your business have gotten sloppy. Now is the time to look at all those bits and pieces that have been overlooked because they didn’t rise to the top of the ‘to do’ list.

• Is all the software updated?

• Is everyone trained on the new features?

• Are their processes and procedures which have been around for a few years, and become ingrained to the point that no one questions them?

Now is the time to dust them off and reconfigure them. Are there people who have been marginal performers, but you never had the luxury of time to address that issue? Now is the time to make those personnel changes you’ve been thinking about.

As a sales consultant, I have accumulated a whole list of very specific ‘systems issues’ which should be looked at afresh, with an eye to putting in place the systems, processes, tools, and people – not based on the past, but focused on the future.

While this list is specific to sales organizations, your list could be just as detailed for your area of responsibility.

For chief sales officers, now is the time to look at, and make adjustments to:

• The arrangement of sales territories and accounts.

• Creating a company-wide process for identifying and prioritizing high-potential accounts.

• The sales compensation formula.

• Making the changes in the CRM system that have been accumulating.

• Taking a critical look at your marketing collateral – hard copy and electronic and bringing it up to standards.

• Looking critically at the productivity of each salesperson and making adjustments along the way.

• (We have a free tool you can use to objectively measure the productivity of a salesperson, a sales

• team, and the company as a whole. Download “Kahle’s Kalculation of Sales Productivity.”

• Critically looking at the education and development of the sales force. Now is the time to invest in providing them with the skills and strategies they will need in the post-pandemic world. You’ll find the sales team is more amenable to making changes and accepting training now than they may have been for years. (Check out our Kahle Way® B2B Selling System training program.)

Page 6 Newsletter

All these efforts are based on the premise that the business will survive and, after accounting for some minor changes, be pretty much the same, doing business in much the same way, next year as you did last year. The focus, then, was to prepare to do it better.

But, what if the gift of slow times also brought an opportunity to challenge the limitations of business as usual? Then, you could spend some intellectual and emotional capital on the next business strategy.

2. Prepare to do it Differently. Your business came into existence when you, or your predecessors, saw a need that you thought you could fill. That could have been generations ago, or it may have been last month. Regardless, the world has changed dramatically since then, and the fundamental premise upon which your business is based may be shifting.

What if you could use this gift of downtime to re-imagine your business? There is the possibility, at least with a few of you, that you could emerge from the pandemic malaise with a transformed business.

If you think that may be you, here are a few ideas on how I would go about it.

a. Ask this question, and brainstorm some solutions: “What urgent problems and/or pain do our customers have (or will they have) that we can help with?”

b. Then, I’d prioritize the answers to the brainstorming session by asking these questions:

• “Which of these can we address the quickest?”

• “With which of these can we make the greatest impact?

• “Which of these are we most passionate about?”

c. And if your work uncovered a likely suspect, then I’d ask and answer these questions: • “If we wipe the slate clean and started fresh, what solutions could we provide?”

• “Exactly what would that look like?” • “How could we deliver it?” • “How much would we charge? “ • “How would we promote and sell it?” • “What would we need to pull this off?” • “What would we need to do to pull this off?”

• “Who needs to do what, by when?”

And at the end of this hard work of brainstorming, prioritizing and planning, I’d have a plan to transform the business, and maybe the industry.

Slow times are a gift. Use the gift well. You may not have another opportunity like this for a long time.

Brief history on the Trouble Shooter Clinic

The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) education department (now the RV Technical Institute) plays an active role in fostering a positive learning community that encourages keen involvement of RV industry manufacturers, aftermarket suppliers and subject matter experts to cultivate educational alliances to benefit the RV industry. The Education Department has maintained as its primary focus the development of technical information for dissemination to industry stakeholders and the development of learning communities that support lifelong learning.

The first Trouble Shooter Clinic was held in Orlando, Florida in 1989. In its early stage, clinics were organized throughout the United States. Entry-level and seasoned technicians would attend the clinics to gain valuable hands-on experience to practice trouble shooting techniques on RV components.

Four training tracks were developed, and participants are granted Continuing Education Credits (CEC) upon successful completion of the respective training track:

1. Foundation track 2. Power Sources

3. Appliance track 4. Running Gear, Hydraulics, Slide-outs & Towing

Canadian dealers and technicians sometimes take part in factory training provided by RV manufacturers and independent component suppliers. While the training is invaluable, the seminars were only held in the US. Canadian dealers often request to have the same training opportunities available in Canada, but such opportunities were limited. In observing the success of RVIA’s Trouble Shooter Clinic model where numerous component suppliers would come together for the duration of 3, 4 or 5 days and offer the essential training at one venue, RVDA of Canada invited RVIA to conduct the first Canadian Trouble Shooter Clinic in 2013.

The Canadian Trouble Shooter Clinic is held in a different city each year, as requested by the Provincial and regional RV Dealers Associations. To date, the clinic has been held in the following locations:

2013 – Calgary, AB 2014-Montreal, QC

2015 – Halifax, NS

2016 – Calgary, AB 2017- Toronto, ON 2018-Saskatoon, SK

2019-Halifax, NS 2022-Hamilton, ON

Page 8 Newsletter

There are numerous factors in the selection of the dates and location of the clinic. The challenge has and will always be to find a suitable venue to accommodate the scale and volume of equipment used and large venue that offers trade school-like atmosphere and convenience. The timing of the event has been set in early November as there are many industry events taking place in the fall and winter.

2022 Hamilton Trouble Shooter Clinic

RVDA of Canada recently wrapped up a very successful Trouble Shooter Clinic (TSC) in Hamilton, ON from October 31 to November 4, 2022 and the Parts Seminar from November 2 to 3, 2022. “

Most programs had lots of practical scenarios and good hands-on applications.” “

I learned about some new products, and a few diagnostic shortcuts on things I thought I knew about.”

Page 9 Newsletter
I liked the level of knowledge each instructor has and how they ensured every student
The instructor is extremely familiar with the workings and diagnosis of all products presented.”

Relevant and timely information. Good group size which promoted discussion and best practices and networking.”

Presenters were very upbeat and knowledgeable. Very informative without being dry. Covered a lot in 2 days.”

“I liked having the opportunity to learn more about products and companies I work with use everyday. Helps me better understand these for bettering my customer service.”

The national Education and HR committee are preparing for the 2023 Trouble Shooter Clinic in Quebec. We thank the following sponsors for their generous support for the 2022 TSC and look forward to offering more training opportunities in 2023 and beyond.

Nineteen Manufacturers/Brands Recognized With Quality Circle Awards

The annual Dealer satisfaction survey of US and Canadian dealers has provided motorized and towable RV manufacturers with ratings in product reliability/quality, parts, warranty and sales support.

The 2022 survey was conducted between June and September 2022 with responses from 539 US and Canadian dealers on 2,648 brand ratings. This survey revealed significant improvement in parts and sales support and product reliability and quality in motorhomes. However, ratings in all areas of support and product reliability and quality in towables have regressed.

Now in its 28th year, this survey continues to serve as a valuable tool for RV dealers and manufacturers to improve product quality and consumer experience.

The RV Dealers Association presented the Quality Circle Award to nineteen manufacturers/brands for earing the highest ratings in the Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey during the RV Dealers Convention/Expo on November 8, 2022 in Las Vegas.

The brands/manufacturers/product categories receiving the award were rated by at least 15 dealers and scored 4.25 or above out of a five-point scale in overall dealer satisfaction.

2022 RV Dealers Convention/Expo was a resounding success!

Why was it considered a success?

With 1,811 dealers, exhibitors and industry personnel in attendance, that is a 16% increase in attendance over the 2021 convention. The schedule enabled all participants to maximize their time in the expo, seminars, private meetings, side chatters and quick group huddles. That is a lot to take in, in five days. Convention format

“The Convention/Expo committee put a lot of work into making a few changes to the schedule,” said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia. “The eye was always toward making sure the convention is relevant to all types of dealer business models. There are a lot of things dealers share, but different dealers have different ways of doing things, different numbers of employees, different product mixes. We’re trying to put on an event that is relevant to any type of dealer no matter what the business model is.”

The workshops at this year’s convention sought to address the following:

• New sales on selling

• Back to basics of selling and providing good customer service

• Improve consumer communications to avoid potential litigation if service problems arise

• Helping consumers understand and enjoy the RV lifestyle Expo

The exhibit hall opened with a great deal of anticipation. The vendors were eager to have in-person discussions and interactions with dealers. It may take some time for RV dealers to “buy in” but once they do, they’re in it for the long haul. According Ingrassia, “They’re bringing relevant products and services to the table. That’s the key. It takes a while in our business. It’s a very collegial, ethical business and they want to know who they are dealing with. For some of the newer vendors, that’s their first step in building a relationship with dealers that could lead to long-term partnerships.” In 2023, the Convention/Expo is set to return to Paris Las Vegas from November 6th to 10th. After a rotation of properties in Las Vegas, Paris seemed to move into the crowd favourite spot. The exhibit and workshop space are ideal for the size of this event.

Workshops

The workshops were divided in tracks starting with Vendor Training +Plus, Dealer/General Manager, Sales. Digital Marketing, F&I and Fixed Operations. Starting in 2022, The vendor-led Vendor Training +Plus format expanded to its own track alongside tracked education sessions.

With over 75 workshops, the Convention/Expo Committee built a program that:

• Focused on education that is relevant to different dealership business models.

• Enhanced networking opportunities for dealers and their business partners.

• Increased vendor-specific educational opportunities. Developed fixed operations content centered on improving Repair Event Cycle Time (RECT).

Page 14 Newsletter

With over 40% of speakers as first-time speakers, the participants had a chance to hear and learn from speakers that offer not only inspirations but also solutions.

The Young RV Executive Program was rebranded to the Leadership Roundtable. This year, acclaimed speaker, Pete Smith, presented to a sold-out crowd of young RV executives. Smith’s presentation, “Rockstar Manager: From Valued Colleague to Significant Leader” engaged and inspired the future leaders to improve their leadership skills.

Networking Opportunities

This convention offers premier education to dealers, and it also offers great opportunities for networking. Outside of the featured presentations, there were many occasions for chance meetings and interactions. One such occasion was the Canadian Reception. This event was open to all Canadians attending the Convention/Expo with generous sponsorship from Wells Fargo Commercial Distribution Finance, Federated Insurance and Xtended Service Agreements.

Learn About Association Initiatives

Your Provincial, Regional and National associations work on numerous initiatives on your behalf throughout the year. RVDA of Canada President and a member of the RVDA of Canada Executives typically offers a national update at your Provincial or Regional annual general meeting. Such an overview was also provided at the RVDA of Canada annual meeting held during the Convention/Expo.

Here are some of the initiatives:

RVDA of Canada has put forth the 2023 Pre-Budget Submission to the House of Commons Finance Committee. This initiative will continue to highlight our industry and offer recommendations to the federal government. While we continue to highlight the need for additional skilled workers and additional cooperation between all levels of government to encourage Provincial apprenticeship, other areas include: the need for campground infrastructure investment and amendment to the National Standards for Weights and Dimensions (MOU) to include RV trailers with a GVWR less than 10,000kg as a new category.

Investment in camping and RVing infrastructure will play a crucial role in the overall contributions of the tourism industry. According to RVDA of Canada President, Eleonore Hamm, “We are asking the government to make a significant commitment to the electrification of campgrounds across Canada. Better access to electricity for RV consumers is an important driver of tourism and will contribute immediately to the transition towards electrification of RVs and zero-emissions campgrounds.”

The new category under the national MOU includes both travel trailers (maximum length 12.5m) and fifth wheel trailers (maximum length 14.65m). Provinces are now working towards implementation of the amendment and should be contacted directly with any questions on status, as the process may require legislative or regulatory changes. Thus far, BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario have made or are making the necessary changes.

Thank you for your support of the RV Dealers Convention/Expo and your Association!

KYCS Global Inc is a Canadian company based out of Ontario. KYCS is partnered with Crime Stoppers to build safer communities through technology.

KYCS Locate is NOT a gps device – it leverages Internet of Things (IoT) to triangulate its location. Locate is designed for all types of assets and equipment including RVs/trailers. Locate is easily transferable from one trailer/RV to another and has no monthly fees or subscription fees Locate is a one time initial cost with the battery of the device lasting up to 5 years. Locate has powerful magnets or a 3M adhesive with no wiring for placement with an asset.

Locate wakes up and pings once a day at a set time for 5 minutes, then updates its location on a google map. If the asset is stolen or goes missing, the next time Locate wakes up, the KYCS monitoring team can tell the Locate device to stay awake and ping it every 10 seconds and start actively tracking RV/trailer.

For Dealerships

Inventory Management and Lot Protection – KYCS

Locate has a cost neutral approach to inventory management and lot protection. Know where your trailers and RVs are on the lot within 60 feet everyday. At the same time, protect the trailers and RVs on the lot in case of theft with active recovery recourse.

For Customers

Peace of mind – for your customers, they will have peace of mind knowing where their trailer/RV is once a day, everyday. If there is a theft, the customer calls the KYCS team with a police incident number and we will actively work through Crime Stoppers and law enforcement to track & recover the stolen unit.

Cost Neutral Model for Dealerships

The Model – after leveraging the KYCS Locate device for inventory management and lot protection, Locate is positioned to the customer as their own device. If the customer declines the Locate device, it is simply repurposed on another RV/trailer for inventory management & lot protection. This model not only renders the cost neutral, it also generates new revenue for the dealership.
