Dear Members, We may still be experiencing some brisk winter weather, but RV enthusiasts are getting ready for spring by visiting the numerous RV retail shows around the country. The shows help to showcase how our industry offers fun, flexible and affordable vacation options for Canadian families.

For over 20 years now, we have also been driving awareness of the RV Lifestyle through the Go RVing Canada marketing campaign. Make sure you check your in-boxes for your link to the 2018 RVDA national payroll survey which was sent out this month. By participating in this survey, you will receive access to provincial and national average monthly and hourly figures by position. You will also receive data on total number of employees, shop rates, as well as, employee benefits. This information can be used to help shape employee compensation as well as evaluate your company’s competitiveness. Only those that respond will receive the results.

I would like to remind you that you can still register for RVX in Salt Lake City this March. RVIA has let us know that registered dealers will receive access to an exclusive tool kit called the RVX Sales Navigator which will help them find new consumers in their local area. These are brand new consumers who are active in the outdoor lifestyle but have not yet considered an RV. The toolkit will help dealers locate them, make them aware of who you are, the RVs available to them and options to bring them to your dealership. This is certainly a tool worth exploring. In addition, the exhibit hall will feature brand new and never seen before models. Exciting new times for the industry!

$12,500 in Bursaries available to Aspiring Apprentices and Technicians 2018-2019 NTP-STAG Canada RV Technician Bursary The NTP-STAG Canada RV Technician Bursary program was established to aid aspiring men and women in RV apprenticeship programs as well as the technicians that have been recently certified.

Be it living expenses while away from home, travel costs, or purchase of new tools, this bursary will help with offsetting just some of those financial obligations for those with a demonstrated need as well as acknowledgement for a job well done.

Apprentices and technicians that have completed applicable training (see application) or obtained Provincial /national certification between August 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019 are eligible to apply for one of twelve bursaries! Eleven bursaries are valued at $1,000 and the top bursary is valued at $1,500.

NTP-STAG Canada has been a strong supporter of Canadian dealers as well as RVDA of Canada. This relationship was strongly fostered by Rob Edwards (R), Director of Sales at NTP-STAG Canada. Rob believes that, “qualified men and women have made the commitment and showed strong desire to enhance one's skills and expand their knowledge base and therefore, made personal sacrifices. We understand this translates to taking on the extra financial burden while being away from home and family obligations. I hope the bursaries can help offset some temporary financial setbacks. I have no doubt that this award brings the recipient and the dealer, a tremendous sense of pride and excitement beyond what the monetary value of the bursary offers.�

The survey application involves mainly helping and reassuring the applicant that the application itself is NOT daunting. They need to answer a few questions in essay or video format and they also need an employer reference on why you support their application. There is nothing more unfortunate than having the applicant submit all the necessary information only to have missed the employer reference letter.

Eligible programs and certifications are to be completed and obtained between August 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019. Application deadline is June 1, 2019. There is still a lot of time to put together the application, but you know what happens if you leave it until the last minute.

Many Reasons You Should Participate in the 2018 RVDA of Canada RV Industry Payroll Survey

What is this survey about anyways?

You have heard the spiel. This survey aims to provide you with current compensation and benefits market data for all RV dealership personnel across Canada. This means that personnel from all dealership departments from entry-level to management are all included in this survey.

This survey is open to all RVDA of Canada members regardless of location and size, including: dealerships, service centers, rental dealers, campgrounds and RV manufacturers. RVDA of Canada has engaged MNP to administer and conduct the survey as well as compile the data for publication. Survey responses are collected exclusively by MNP and only MNP will have access to the raw data. We encourage you to complete this survey online at https://goo.gl/QHwbMS. The survey is open from February 21st through April 26th, 2019. The summary report will reveal employment trends citing areas of growth and decline, especially in key positions such as apprentice and technicians by gender, years of experience, and certification level. The breakdown will be available by Province and by national average.

We have two fabulous prizes (well, three, since the summary itself is the main prize) available to those that complete the survey!

Canadian retail sales statistics are now available for both motorized and towable recreational vehicles.

These statistics will allow dealers to better manage the inventory on their lot by knowing which units are selling in their area, which price points are attracting buyers as well as knowing the local trends affecting their marketplace.

The RV retail sales statistics compiled by Statistical Surveys Inc. are the result of matching manufacturer VIN numbers with RV registrations.

The RVDA of Canada endorsement agreement includes free access for national monthly figures only, for members only. Going forward, these figures will be published in the RVDA of Canada bimonthly newsletter and archived at the “RV Statistics / National RV Sales” link on the member side of www.rvda.ca.

That "sell line" is then used on signage, business cards, ads, and websites. Think of something simpleCampbell Soup's "It's mmm, mmm good!" or Coke's "It's the real thing." Take some time to develop that one perfect sentence that tells your customers who and what you are. Don't underestimate the impact your employees have on the customer's perception of your brand. Once a customer is ignored at the counter, for instance, or treated poorly on the phone, you've lost not only that person but everyone else who hears about the unfortunate experience. Remember that word-of-mouth can help, but it can also hurt. Get rid of employees who won't cooperate.

Reward your people for delivering the experience.

Set employee goals that focus on delivering the customer experience you want to create. As I help dealer- ship service and parts departments define the customer experience they want to be known for, I work hard to make sure every employee understands what we're trying to accomplish and how they'll be rewarded if they help to deliver that experience.

5 Tips for Better Password Security submitted by Reza Kamrani, Account Representative, Associations

With the rising threat of cybercrime, information leaks, and data breaches, protecting your business is vital and a strong password is your first line of defense.

Despite the fact that 8 in 10 people say they’re concerned about the security of their online accounts, passwords that are weak, old, or repeated are still used. Year after year, cyber security companies report that most computer users are choosing the same weak passwords. In fact, an annual list of the worst passwords of the year published by SplashData found that almost 10 per cent of people have used at least one of the 25 worst passwords on this year’s list, and nearly 3 per cent of people have used the number one worst password, “123456.”

Most web services force their users to follow best practices by only allowing passwords with pre-set criteria or by analyzing passwords to see if they’re weak, fair, or strong.

Most services require a password that’s at least eight characters long and contains an uppercase letter, a number, and a symbol. While these requirements are useful, simply changing your password from “password” to “Password1!” doesn’t solve the problem. Below, we outline five tips to help you come up with stronger passwords.

1. Choose a strong password Cyber criminals gain access to accounts or data through social engineering. This is because many of us naturally choose a password that personally relates to our lives. These types of passwords are easy for your friends and coworkers to guess, and something that cyber criminals may be able to find with some social media research.

Don’t choose passwords that include the name of your pet, car, kids, spouse, city you were born in, or your favourite sports team. On SplashData’s list of the year’s worst passwords, “starwars” joined the list this year at number 16. A password related to common terms from pop culture can also be dangerous.

Hackers can also crack passwords through brute force, using tools that guess many combinations at once. Using passwords that are at least 12 characters long and have a combination of letters, numbers, and other characters can help make your passwords more difficult to crack.

2. Create a password you’ll remember Many computer security companies offer websites or tools that can generate randomized passwords for you. While these passwords are much stronger and harder to crack, they can also be difficult to remember. Having a password that’s difficult to remember usually means you’ll have to change it again in the near future, or you’ll have to write it down somewhere near your computer. Neither of these situations are ideal.

If you want to create a password that’s easy to remember but hard to guess, try creating a password out of a phrase. Take a phrase that has meaning to you and use the first letter of each word to create the unique password. For example, the phrase “My dog is an 8-year-old black labrador retriever named Barkley!” would become the password “Mdia8yoblrnB!”

3. Use different passwords and change them often Having a strong password that you’ll remember is the easy part. The hard part is creating unique and strong passwords for each of your different online accounts. If you use the same password for multiple online accounts, you’re putting yourself at risk (especially if you’re using the same password for your social media accounts as you are for online banking).

Having one account compromised could result in all your accounts being compromised. That’s why it’s important to create unique passwords for each account and change them often.

4. Be aware of password save features Having a strong password means nothing if you’re leaving your login information saved for your favourite websites. Most websites allow you to save your login credentials or automatically log in so that you don’t have to enter your username and password every time you visit.

While this feature is convenient, it’s also risky. Never use this feature on a computer that’s shared with others, and even with your own computer, it’s best to avoid doing this when possible. Inputting your password every time you log in can also help ensure you don’t forget your password.

5. Be careful with password retrieval questions Beyond passwords, it’s important to think carefully about your answers to security questions asked when you create a new account. These security questions are used to verify your identification when you want to reset your password. Unfortunately, they’re often standard and similar across websites.

Questions like “where did you go to school?”, “where were you born?” or “what is your mother’s maiden name?” are easy to answer. They’re also relatively easy for cyber criminals to discover with a little social media research. If they can successfully answer these security questions, they could potentially reset your passwords and hijack your accounts.

When creating answers for security questions, try to come up with your own question rather than using the standard questions.

That way you can use a question and answer that only you would know.

Did you know about the RV Careers website?

The RV Careers site was developed to raise awareness to career opportunities available in the Canadian RV industry. It provides some background information to the various departments found within an RV dealership, apprentice and technician training opportunities. It also contains information for employers on how to hire and work with apprentices and apprenticeship authorities and how to access the numerous Federal, Provincial and private grants available.

Hiring?

When you visit the site, the first thing that should jump out at you is “jobs.� And, the call-to-action would be to see what jobs are available and to look deeper for the job and training requirements.

Financial incentives and assistance programs There are many financial incentives for both apprentices and employers to participate in an apprenticeship as well as assistance from Provincial and Federal governments and your local RVDA. On the financial incentive page, it lists numerous benefits for apprentices to participate in an apprenticeship and for employers to hire apprentices. There are numerous Federal, Provincial and RVDA Financial assistance programs such as bursaries and grants.
