‘s Column Dear Members, Spring is in bloom and hopefully we have seen the last of the snow. The RV industry is picking up steam across the country. Our present retail results are fairly consistent with last year showing a modest 2% increase year-to-date 2017. RV shows have shown increased attendance across the country and retail activity has been strong. Consumers are eager to embrace the lifestyle our industry offers.

Inventory levels are higher however availability of inventory may be a challenge this year.

Many manufacturers are booked out for production, months ahead. The upside during this high demand is that the inventory you do have becomes more valuable. As well, any remaining non-current inventory that is on dealers’ lots still garners good value. Pre-owned inventory is at its highest demand ever and is commanding premium values for both wholesale and retail.

A new generation of camper is here. Our millennial generation now represents over 21% of consumer discretionary purchasing. They are a growing portion of our market. Their expectations are much more demanding than any previous generation. Instant gratification is the norm and they demand immediate resolution to product failure. Our industry is working diligently to improve operational efficiencies to meet the demand of this new consumer.

As a national association, we continue our commitment to education and training. Educated employees are more committed and have longer retention records. Earlier this spring we announced NTP-Stag Canada as Title Sponsor for their 2017 RV Technician Bursary Program. Through the agreement, the national association will again be able to offer financial assistance to Canadian RV service technicians in their educational endeavours. The RV Technician bursary allows us to reward students that have taken the initiative to further their careers by enrolling in education and training. Make sure your technicians apply.

The national board recently held its meeting in our national capital. Along with the regular series of meeting, we also participated in a government advocacy day. Board members from the RVDA of Canada and the Canadian Camping and RV Council (CCRVC) were in Ottawa to discuss issues of importance to the RV and Camping industry. This day has become a staple event of our advocacy strategy and produced very positive dialogue with our Members of Parliament!

We noted that budget 2017 proposed to make permanent the $37.5 million per year in temporary funding previously provided to Destination Canada, starting in 2018-19. We recommend that Destination Canada advertising and messaging include particular reference to RV and Camping opportunities to those target markets where RV rentals are being offered. Promotion should gear towards highlighting a new way to discover Canada. There is a significant opportunity to expand on RV‐based marketing initiatives.

The RVDA of Canada recently announced that it is entering into a new endorsement partnership with Wells Fargo Commercial Distribution Finance. The RVDA of Canada Board has added Wells Fargo’s RV inventory and wholesale financing to the association’s group of endorsed products. The program, which provides commercial financial services to Canadian RV dealerships, is considered to be one of the best in the industry. We look forward to working with Wells Fargo on numerous initiatives and truly value their continued support of the Canadian RV industry. These endorsements contribute to the financial viability of your provincial / regional and national RVDAs and allow us to continue to provide assistance to Canadian RV dealers.

Canadian National RV Retail Statistics Board of Directors Executive Committee Canadian retail sales statistics are now available for both motorized and towable recreational vehicles.

These statistics will allow dealers to better manage the inventory on their lot by knowing which units are selling in their area, which price points are attracting buyers as well as knowing the local trends affecting their marketplace.

The RV retail sales statistics compiled by Statistical Surveys Inc. are the result of matching manufacturer VIN numbers with RV registrations.

Canadian RVing and Camping Week 2017 – “The start of the 2017 RV & Camping Summer Season” The Canadian Camping and RV Council (CCRVC) and Go RVing Canada will partner to host the 3rd Canadian RVing and Camping Week from May 23 – 28, 2017 to celebrate RVing and Camping in Canada and encourage Canadians to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and the RV and Camping Lifestyle.

Participating Campgrounds will be offering discounted campsite rates, special events and numerous activities coast to coast. CCRVC will be working jointly with Parks Canada to talk about the importance of RV and Camping and how it is an activity that promotes a sense of community, creates life-long memories for your family and allows everyone to engage with nature. CCRVC will also be working with all levels of government across Canada to recognize the milestone event during Canada’s 150th birthday while highlighting the economic impact of the RV and Camping Industry.

From May 23 to 28, 2017 participating campgrounds across Canada will celebrate everything that makes camping and RVing so popular with activities, discounted camping rates, and a special fundraising initiative for Make-A-Wish® Canada.

Fundraising last year raised $20,000 to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses.

This year in addition to raising funds through the well-known Make-A-Wish star program, we’re hoping to host the largest simultaneous marshmallow roast with campgrounds across the country – a fun initiative for campers and a great way to help raise funds for Make-A-Wish® Canada.

Canadian RVing and Camping Week will culminate in a special offer for two-nights camping at participating campgrounds (May 26-27/Fri-Sat).

As well as the weekend offer, many campgrounds are offering a promotional stay of “Five Nights for the price of Four” May 23–27, 2017 (Tues-Sat).

Before Hitting the Road: Top Things RV Travelers to the U.S. Should Know RV owners are passionate - about the lifestyle, and the great benefits that come with hitting the road on their schedule, exploring America and chasing the sun. At a recent show in Montreal, the director of Business Development at RBC Bank U.S., Alain Forget, spoke with this highly energetic group of travelers. He heard about their adventures, their stories and their challenges travelling in an RV through the U.S. Here’s what Alain learned: Canadian RV owners top 3 challenges while travelling in the U.S. Challenge #1: Securing a site in advance. RV owners love to map out their routes and, of course, book their sites in advance to get the best location. Many Canadian RV owners try to use a Canadian check for payment to secure a site - often their checks are not accepted, funds are held for long periods of time, and they pay fees on top of foreign exchange. In fact, using a U.S. dollar check issued from a Canada bank could cause delays and additional fees since the check does not originate from a U.S. bank.

Challenge #2: Carrying large amounts of U.S. cash. Many RV owners will take out large sums of U.S. cash before leaving Canada, to be sure they have enough on hand for their journey. Not only do they feel the upfront impact of foreign exchange, they’re anxious about carrying so much cash at any given time.

Challenge #3: Using a Canadian credit card in the U.S. As an alternative to carrying cash, many RV owners will use their Canadian credit card as a form of payment – but are surprised by the exchange rates and foreign transaction fees they are charged when using it. U.S. purchases made with a Canadian credit card can face up to a 2.5% foreign transaction fee – on top of the exchange rate – which can really add up over the course of the season.

You have full control of your job postings! You can add, edit or remove your job posting whenever you like. You will be able to receive job applications via e-mail. Before this listing expires (in 45 days), you will be notified to either update or delete the posting.

If you currently work in sales, parts, or service, you will want to visit the Education page. There are training and educational programs for technicians, parts/service management programs, sales, marketing and F&I programs, administration/accounting programs and awards available.

For apprentices and anyone wishing to become an apprentice, detailed information can be found on the Become an apprentice page.

There are many programs such as youth and pre-apprenticeship where high school students can get practical work experience. If there isn’t one in your area, there’s information available under the Employer page on how to start and implement your own apprenticeship program.

There are many financial incentives for both apprentices and employers to participate in an apprenticeship as well as assistance from Provincial and Federal governments and your local RVDA. On the financial incentive page, it lists numerous benefits for apprentices to participate in an apprenticeship and for employers to hire apprentices. There are numerous Federal, Provincial and RVDA Financial assistance programs such as bursaries and grants.
