Steuben Old Home Days auction is coming back on August 27, 2022! The last two years have seen the Old Home Days Committee work around Covid-19 concerns but this year our 96th, we are collecting donations, and gift certificates, to have many items for our customers to enjoy. We contact many businesses and have several local craft people who donate items to be sold as well. We appreciate the LeClar Brothers Auction Service for their help in making this a fun event to watch and to keep things moving along so smoothly. Auction items will be on display at 10 am and the auction will begin at 11 am. We will have a refreshment stand available. At noon we will have the Community Service Award presentation. Always a surprise who the Committee has chosen to recognize for their service to the area. At 12:30 will be the Edelweiss Schuhplattlers of the Utica Maennerchor (German Dancers). At 2 pm The Streater Family Band will have some musical entertainment for all to listen to; all these events will take place in the tent behind the Steuben Town Hall. At 3 pm the famous Roast Pork Take Out Dinner will be available featuring Roast Pork, Dressing, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Green Beans, Homemade Applesauce, and Coleslaw, Roll and Brown Bread and your choice of 3 kinds of pie (Apple, Blueberry or Pumpkin). Price for this wonderful drive through take out dinner is $20. Our weekend of events will wrap up on Sunday morning August 28 at 9 am in the Steuben United Methodist Church with Services by Pastor Dorcus Dunn. You may wonder what are the funds of these events used for? We support Steuben United Methodist Women, and the Cemetery Associations of Steuben Corners, Carmichael Hill, Steuben Valley, and Sixty. The Cemeteries use the funds to mow and keep up these beautiful places in our town. The UMWuse their funds to help in times of need throughout the year. Donations and memorials may be sent to Betty Landman, 9761 Starr Hill Road, Remsen NY13438.

Established 1991 Serving The Community for 30 Years The New York State DEC has just released a pretty cool addition to their HuntFishNY app. For those not familiar, the HuntFishNYapp is a smartphone app that allows you to keep track of all your hunting and fishing privileges. It also allows you to report any game that Is required to be reported. Another cool thing is it is a legal way to prove that you are licensed to do whichever activity you are doing. (You still need to be in possession of any carcass tags that may be required). I’ve been using it for several years and it works fairly well. The addition to the HuntFishNYapp is called “Tacklebox”. It is included in the app when you download or update it. Here is a portion of the press release from the Governors office describing it. “Tackle Box allows users to search for waterbodies by name or by panning and zooming. Highlighted waters are clickable, providing information on special fishing regulations, fish stocking, and boating/fishing access sites owned by DEC, the State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, New York State Canal Corporation, and New York City Department of Environmental Protection. In addition, the new 'navigate' feature gives users driving directions to the boating access site of their choice. The Tackle Box also includes an offline feature that allows anglers to use it when cell service is not available”. I’ve checked it out and it seems pretty neat. The DEC admits there are a few tweaks and additions to be made but so far the rollout has been smooth. You can download the HuntFishNYapp from your App Store and try it out. You will need to create an account to utilize the licensing part.

It's hard to go anywhere today without encountering single-use plastics (SUPs). Single-use plastics have grown in popularity for their ability to provide convenience, protect food, and provide lightweight packaging options. However, plenty of confusion surrounds how to properly dispose of many single-use plastic items. Are they recyclable? If so, how? If not, why? What are the alternatives? Help us Recycle Right NY! Just because an item is plastic or has the chasing arrows symbol, it does not always mean it can go into your household recycling bin. It is important to follow rules for your specific program to keep our recycling stream clean and of high quality. AHorse Story Afriend I met along the way inspired me with a funny horse story! If you've never heard of my friend Dorothy Richards you can meet Dorothy in her fascinating book: Beaversprite! Dorothy spent a lot of time walking her trails and she introduced me to many of her friends, mostly beavers. She converted her cellar into a pond complete with a beaver lodge! When visiting with Dorothy, in her living room a beaver would politely tap on the gate at the cellar stairs where we were visiting and, of course, the beaver would be invited in and munch on cheerios and carrots. Meanwhile squirrels scampered overhead along ceiling beam! I loved going with Dorothy to the wild pond. She would sit on a deck and call out. Alright! Soon heads could be seen coming toward her through the water. Both beavers and muskrats would climb up to her for the carrots she brought them. I believe you can still visit Beaversprite outside of. Dolgeville. Awonderful way to spend an afternoon. Now, the funny horse story. When I was about fifteen, a neighbor and their family moved to my road, from England . She worked at Trinkus Manor. They were having a British Day and she asked if I would come there and pretend to be British! I borrowed a British saddle and cap and showed up. The thing is that I had mention it to a couple of cowboy friends what I was up to . About an hour after I arrived who should come galloping down the road to the Manor but of course my cowboy friends! Turned out alright however as all the visitors thought it a great joke! The cowboys and I were given a delicious meal and everyone went home happy! Hello to Anthony, wherever you are! Woods Woman. SW It is Eagle Scout project time for Troop 175 Boy Scout Robert Clemons. His project is to mark the trails with signs on the Town of Floyd’s Nature Trail. Signs designate where the fire house, parking, horseshoe pits and the like. Pictured here, before the work begins, from the left are: Robert Clemons, Tristan Pinkos, Michael Reigler, Caedyn Rowlands (Girls Troop 37), Aiden Pinkos, Collin Rowlands. Back in 1975, a few legionnaires started an 8team pitch tournament for a fee of 50¢ per night and 10¢ per up. The winning team won $50. Who would have guessed back then that the tournament would grow to 32 teams and still be going strong after 48 years and 91 tournaments.Inhonor of all past and present tournament winners and participants, tournament committee member John Savage made by hand a beautiful new winner’s plaque that is now on display at the post.Roberts Post wants to thank the countless number of people who have participated over all of these years. The support you have given the legion has made many of our projects possible. If you are interested in joining the fun as a team or as a substitute, call the legion for more information at 315-865-9921. The tournament lasts 16 weeks, meets on Thursdays and the season ends with a banquet.
John Savage handmade a beautiful new winner’s plaque that is now on display at the post Dan Keaney, 17, of Altamont NY, signed with the Texas Rangers. He was previously committed to play Division 1 ball at Marist when the opportunity of a lifetime literally came knocking on his door. It was his scout with a contract. It was a tough decision for Dan and his family but he decided to follow his dream. Three days later he was in Surprise, Arizona at the Ranger training facility to begin his rookie career as a pitcher. He says the facilities are "sick" and he couldn't be more excited to get to work.
