The Poland girls basketball team (22-2) won its first sectional title on March 4 with a 50-45 win against Hamilton (17-7) in the Section III Class D Championship at Onondaga Community College. Senior Logan Cookinham led the way for the Tornadoes as she scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half. Coach Jason Potempa said the win is a testament to the girls’ character. “They are an amazing group of girls who are intelligent, competitive, resilient, and determined,” Potempa said.
Quilts are an amazing piece of artwork, full of stories, meaning and history. A group of women finish a quilt after the family of the late Audrey Van Vranken gave an unfinished project to the group.

Ladies Finish Quilt to Charitable Group
Every Wednesday a group of women, many of them former Holland Patent teachers, meet in a classroom at the former St. Mary’s School in New York Mills to sew, laugh and share stories. Most of them are quilters but needleworkers and knitters are also part of the group which, in addition to the teachers, includes women who worked in dental offices, insurance companies and hospitals. Unfortunately, a few of the original members have passed.
One of these, Audrey Van Vranken, left behind some unfinished projects which her family gave to the group. Included in these were some applique squares with some of the fabric she had used for them. There were also patterns which, when completed, could be compiled into a quilt. Joan Klossner took up the challenge and decided to finish the quilt. Kathy Schaller, using her machine quilting skills, quilted the piece and added the binding. To honor Audrey’s memory the group decided to donate the quilt to a charitable group that could use it to raise funds for their organization.

“Wayne Farr, You were an
co-worker but I was awesomer. Will miss you tons, Nichole”
Farmer Ben from Steuben
The land rent for leased land is paid up by now. Now we know how many acres of owned and leased land we are using and what we need for seeds , fertilizer, lime, chemicals and fuel for the coming year. All equipment has been serviced over the winter with wear parts-the parts that touch the ground or soil on hand before they are needed at breakdown. All of these inputs, if financially able, are prepaid when ordered for better prices and discounts.
The typical crops we grow here in central New York for commercial use are corn, soybeans, spring wheat, oats and rye. Farming is heavily depend-
ent on the weather. For example at planting season could be a total wash with rain, meaning it could be so wet it is impossible to complete tillage and planting , or vice versa it could be so dry the seed doesn’t germinate or worse germinates then dies to drought. Soils vary from sandy light, rocky or heavy clay and the rain and sun affect them each
differently. Something we can do to combat these issues is buying hybrid seeds with the traits that fit our soils and growing conditions. Some such traits are for bug or drought or mold resistance, to help producers make the most out of their yields. Along with this we can also choose the herbicide programs that help us with weed control. We also
call upon the fuel oil companies to get prices and availability on diesel fuel and lock in the price. Sometimes the availability isn’t always there, especially during this economy –the price is only good during the phone call making it hard to budget for fuel. Today we called the local fuel company and wanted our three tractors fueled up. It took 250 gallons to fill them at $4/gallon so $ 1000 and this amount of fuel is enough to run these tractors for 12 hours or one full working day. Last year we used 4000 gallons of fuel to complete tillage, spread lime and fertilizer, plant spray for weed control and harvest.
Last year herbicide was on back order and came in just in the knick of time, the weeds were able to be knocked back/killed and the crop wasn’t stunted. Most farm crop chemicals are made out of the United States. Parts for equipment
and tractors are also few and hard to find. Covid really disrupted the agricultural world and lives. Tractor tire prices have gone up 3-4 times what they were two years ago and the supply is limited. Baling twine for us
farmers is up 100% from 2 years ago.
As you can see this is a very expensive time of the year-not for the faint of heart. We do all of this to feed all of you and the world.

UFOReport in Floyd in 1967
Submitted by Robert Lott
I believe it was in the fall of 1967. I was 14 years old at the time.
We were living in Floyd on the Corner of Rickmyer and Old Floyd Road. Because my mother worked late evenings I helped out by getting up early in the morning starting the coffee for my parents and preparing lunches for my siblings before the school bus came. It had to be late fall because it was pitch black outside that early in the morning. While in the kitchen I noticed lights in the field behind the house so I stepped out on the porch to see
what was going on. There was also a barn behind the house and the light was coming from behind the barn in a field that had been used to grow green beans that year. Anyways I noticed a light that seemed to be hovering above the field and it appeared to be of an oval shape. Then the light moved vertically, up and down, stopped for a few seconds and then moved back and forth horizontally twice. The light stopped, appearing to be hovering and suddenly zipped out of sight straight up.
I told my parents about it and they just shrugged their shoulders and not
really commented about it. I told friends on the school bus that morning about what I had seen and they told me I must be crazy, so I only mentioned it a few times since then because I really didn't have much more information to share. Trying to maintain an open mind since then. I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with Griffis AFB’s proximity to the area as we lived only about a mile away from one of the back gates to the base. That's really all I have for this story. Never experienced it again, but to me it was a surreal event in my life.
Editor’s Note: This report is further evidence of why people wouldn’t share their UFO stories.

The
The Cadleys, one of the most popular bands in the Northeast, will be returning to Park Coffee House in Holland Patent on Saturday, April 1. Showtime is 7:30 PM.
John and Cathy Cadley blend their voices and guitars beautifully, reflecting their contribution to the rich mountain tradition of duet singing. Add master musicians Perry Cleaveland on mandolin and John (JD) Danks on bass, and you’re in for a fine evening of music with elements of tradition, Nashville, and the unexpected.
Singer/songwriter John Cadley began playing guitar at the age of 13 after hearing a recording of the Kingston Trio. Starting in folk music, he moved on to bluegrass, and then to country. John has been a touring road musician out of Nashville, and his songs have been recorded by national artists such as Tony Trischka, Amy Gallatin, and Lou Reid. John Cadley has been inducted into the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame.
Cathy Cadley, a powerful live performer, discovered a passion for guitar at age 11, when she began taking lessons from her uncle, international touring singer/songwriter Ed Hamell. Since then, she’s studied a variety of genres, including classical, jazz,
to
flatpicking bluegrass, and clawhammer banjo. Cathy’s 20 years as a church choir director developed her singing style, and she can also deliver a fast, soulful acoustic guitar style.
Rounding out the band is veteran bassist John (JD) Danks and Perry Cleaveland on mandolin. JD has been a fixture on the Central New York acoustic music scene since his days at Syracuse University. He’s added his solid playing to many studio sessions and is a member of the Syracuse Area Music Hall of Fame. Perry is one of the most in-demand mandolin players in Upstate New York. His virtuoso playing has been featured in just about every acoustic act in the area, live and recorded.
Park Coffee House hopes to see you at this concert. Alive show by The Cadleys delivers everything an audience desires: great singing, solid musicianship, and the feeling they’ve enjoyed a special night of music.
The doors open at 7:00 PM, following the sound check, and the show starts at 7:30 PM. Admission is $12.00, $5.00 for students, and no charge for children 12 and younger.
Before the show and during the intermission, Park Coffee House volunteers will serve homemade desserts and coffee house beverages. Donations, which will support the local food pantry, are requested for the refreshments. Park Coffee House and the food pantry are both programs of Foothills Rural Community Ministry, a non-denomina-
tional charity.
The next concert on the Park Coffee House schedule will feature Nick Piccininni and Joe Davoli on April 22.
Jamcrackers returns on May 6, John Kirk and Trish Miller play on May 20, and the season concludes with a Local Favorites Fundraiser on June 3.
Park Coffee House events are presented at the historic Twin Churches in the village of Holland Patent, just off Main Street (NYS Route 365), across from the park. Follow Park Coffee House on: www.facebook.com/parkcoffeehouse

Holland Patent Wrestling Finishes 2023 at State Championships
The Holland Patent wrestling team finished the 2023 season with another top 20 performance in the NYS Wrestling Rankings finishing Ranked 17th (combined Class B, C, and D teams). The team finished the year with an overall 15-4 record and several top place finishes at various tournaments. Early on, the team finished second (3-1) at the Schalmont Duals dropping only one loss to Newark Valley, out of Section IV. Several wrestlers went undefeated for the day including Jordan Koenig who was selected as the team’s most outstanding wrestler for the tournament. Then the team competed in the Newark Valley Tournament. Five wrestlers reached the finals for the Golden Knights. Jordan Koenig (172) won an individual title. Teammates Eli Doxstader (110), Anthony Phan (132), Adam Stowell (145), and Trenton True (160) placed 2nd, Andrew Juliano (102) and Davian Phan (102) placed 4th, and Nick DeForrest (189) placed 4th for the Golden Knights. The team then traveled to SUNYOswego over Christmas Break to compete in the prestigious Ken Haines tournament. This event brought together some of the top schools from Sections 1, 3, 4, & 5 for a grueling two days of competition. Jordan Koening was the team’s individual champion. Eli Doxstader also made the finals but fell short to State
Qualifier. Quinton Getzin from Section IV. Trenton True placed fourth overall in the 160 lb division with Adam Stowell, Andrew Juliano, and Antony Phan rounding out the event with two sixth and seventh place finishes respectively.
Starting the New Year, the team then traveled to Ilion to compete in the Leo J Sammon tournament. Jordan Koening was again the team’s individual champion. Trenton True also made the finals but fell short to State Qualifier and Section II champ John Clohecy from Fulton. Eli Doxstader placed third overall in the 110 lb division with Antony Phan, Andrew Juiano, and Nick DeForrest rounding out the event with fourth, fifth, and eighth place finishes respectively.
January held many exciting dual meet finishes for the Golden Knights. The team traveled to rival Adirondack for a dual meet on 1-10 for an intense down to the wire win for HP. The loud gym packed crowd was entertained to a Golden Knight 36-33 win for Holland Patent. With the score tied at 33-33, Eli Doxstader won the final match 8-4 to seal the win for the Golden Knights. Then rounding out the dual meet season the team took on Camden. Prior to the match, Holland Patent recognized its seniors, Jordan Koening, Adam Stowell, Anthony Phan, Nick DeForrest, and Rhese Cellamare. This dual also
came down to the last match. With the score tied 31-31 with two matches left, senior Anthony Phan picked up a major decision to give the Knights a four point lead going into the last match which put freshman Jaxon Koening against a four year Camden senior. Jaxon held off the senior’s attempt to pin him and only gave up a four point major. This put the team score tied at 35-35. However Holland Patent won 7 out of the 13 bouts due to a 5-4 overtime win by Anthony Amidon, and received an extra point for the tie breaking criteria giving the Golden Knights a dramatic 35-34 win.
Rounding out the tournament season saw the team travel to Mt. Markham for the Mustang Dual meet tournament and came away with a runner up finish beating New Hartford, Beekmantown, Little Falls, and Cooperstown before losing to State ranked Saranac from Section VII. Trenton True was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament, and teammates Eli Doxstader and Jordan Koening also went undefeated for the day.
The month of February was championship time, and the squad stepped up to the challenge starting with the Section III Class C tournament held at Little Falls High school. Here the team finished 3rd overall with several champions and place winners. Trenton True was chosen as the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the
tournament for his big win over APW’s Connor Shaw. Shaw defeated True twice this season but could not handle True’s adjustment in the finals. Teammates Anthony Phan(132), Jordan Koening(172), and Nick DeForrest(220) also reached the finals with Koening capturing another Class C crown and Phan and DeForrest finishing second. Other top place finishers that qualified to move on were: Eli Doxstader 3rd (110) Anthony Amidon(189) 4th, Adam Stowell (152) 4th, Andrew Juliano 4th, Nick Pekola (118) 5th, Joe Gorsky (126) 6th, and Noah Rivera (145) 6th. The top four palace winners qualified for the over-
all Section III Championships.
At the overall Section III Championships the HP wrestlers finished in 7th place out of the top 29 schools in Class B, C, and D. Both Jordan Koening and Trenton True won overall Section III Championships for the Golden Knights. Jordan won his first title by defeating Sean Kelly from Lowville 8-3. Trenton, a freshman, won his first Section III title by pinning Cael Buckley from General Brown in the third period. Eli Doxstader also made the podium, placing fifth overall. For their efforts Trenton and Jordan each qualified for the New York State Championships held in Albany
MVPArena at the end of February.
At the NYS Championship, Jordan Koening went 5-1 and placed third while Trenton True went 1-2 losing in overtime in the blood round (round before placing). Seven team members were TVLAllstars (Andrew Juliano, Eli. Doxstader, Jordan Koening, Trenton True, Andrew Stowell, Anthony Phan, and Nick DeForrest), while 15 team members were NYS Scholar Athlete award winners with a combined average of 90+. The team would like to thank everyone for all their support throughout the season.

Let’s Get To The Bottom Of This
With spring coming I’m looking forward to fishing Lake Ontario. There’s already been some guys out there fishing but I’m waiting until it gets a little warmer out so I can do some maintenance on the boat before I take it out. Usually I’ll be out there by the second week of April.
There are typically 2 species I target early season on Ontario. They are Brown trout and Lake trout. You fish for the 2 totally different ways. Usually what I do is go prepared to catch either and then let the conditions dictate what I go for.
The Browns will typically be in shallow that time of year, and by shallow I mean 3-15 feet of water. Usually I’ll look for a transition where stained or muddy water meets the clear water. Browns seem to like those areas. It’s also easier to be stealthy in the colored water. For the Brown trout I will usually troll small stick baits behind planer boards and run my own spoons only a few feet down on the downriggers.
fast so you always need to be ready.
By far the number one bait for Lakers this time of year is a cowbell with a lure trailer. Acowbell is essentially a series of big inline spinners used as an attractor. For a bait I’ll usually run a 4”-5” rubber glow paddle tail with a single hook. When the fish are hitting you can’t beat that bait. The single hook makes for easy release of the fish too. If the fish are hitting a little lighter I’ll switch to a small spoon with a treble hook or a Spin-n-glo/fly combo.
I can usually get into the Lakers so good that I’ll only run 2 rods. Any more would just be in the way. 2 years ago I kept track of the Lakers my boat caught that spring. The total for 5-half day trips was 65 fish totaling 850 pounds. That’s an average fish of just over 13
pounds each.
Last year I didn’t keep track of the number of fish but I did catch my biggest Laker So far. It was just over 20 pounds. Lakers aren’t known for their fighting ability so to make up for
Being that shallow though you need to run them far back - at least 100 feet, most of the time more. Most of the time the lures I use for Browns this time of year are fluorescent and UVcolors.
If the conditions aren’t right, or the fishing for Browns is slow, I’ll switch to fishing for Lakers. For Lakers I’ll run out to 100 feet of water. I think that time of year you could catch them in most any depth however the reason I like 100 feet is that where I fish that depth seems to hold over a fairly large distance out into the lake making it easier for me to maintain my presentations close to the bottom without always adjusting the depth on my downriggers.
Downriggers help to get your line down to a desired depth in the water column. For Lakers that desired depth is right near the bottom. Ill troll around 1.5-2 miles an hour. When a fish hits the line releases off the downrigger cable and you need to take up the slack

gear. The same gear I use for Walleyes and Browns.
