Pretty soon the Striped Bass will make their annual spawning trip up the Hudson River. Usually around the middle of April the first in the wave of fish will make their way to the dam in Troy. The inland
Striper season goes from April 1st until November 30th.
The first sign that the Stripers will soon be around is when the Herring start to show up. At this time of year the Herring turn into the Stripers preffered food source. The Herring are also moving upstream to spawn And the Stripers take advantage of that. This in turn makes Herring the preferred bait of most fisherman during the spawning migration.
To catch herring most people use what is called a Sabiki rig. ASabiki rig is a series of tiny mylar flys in series down a leader with a weight on the bottom. You can cast it and jig it back or if your in a boat you can find the Herring on your fish finder and vertical jig for them.
The daily limit per person is 10 so usually I’ll only catch a few to fish with and catch more later to use as needed because they don’t do too well for too long in a live well.
Afairly new rule for fishing for Stripers with bait is the use of a straight-
mouth. This seems to help keep the hook point from burrying in the bait. Another trick I’ve done is to make a bridal with either dental floss or a rubber band to secure the bait to the hook. This way the entire hook is exposed for a better chance of a hook up.
To fish for any migratory species, like Herring and Stripers, you must also register for free with the salt water registry.
shanked circle hook. These hooks help to make sure a higher percent of fish are lip hooked and not gut hooked. They actually work fairly well but you have to know how to use them. With circle hooks you let the fish run a bit and then just start to reel. If you set the hook you will pull the bait out from the fishes mouth.
Atrick I like to do is hook the bait through the nostrils sideways and not up through the bottom of the
I prefer to drift a live bait through an area of current but people catch them many ways. Live bait with a fish finder rig on the bottom is a popular technique. Lures such as bucktails, pencil poppers and big stickbaits also work well. Stripers are delicious fish to eat. In the Hudson the daily limit is 1 per person and the legal size is 18”28” anything under or over must be released.
Striped Bass account for some of the biggest fish I’ve caught in freshwater. My biggest was 44 inches and 35 pounds and it was from my canoe.

Chili Cook-Off Fund-Raiser April 15
The Battle of the Bowls, a Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, April 15th, at the Holland Patent American Legion from 1-5pm. Several area businesses and individuals competing for bragging rights and a trophy for what they believe is the best chili recipe. Judge for yourself who has the best chili in the area. There will also be held a massive Chinese auction, and a 50/50 raffle.
The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is the recipient of the proceeds of this event. For the last twenty six years CNY has made a commitment to families in the area as well as families across the country to be there for them in their families fight against pediatric brain tumors. Every year (with the exception of the covid year) in July if you are standing, shopping or traveling anywhere between the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Water Safari in Old Forge you have seen between 150-400 (depending on the year) motorcycles passing by you. We have many riders that have been with the ride for at least 20 years. This motorcycle event is our primary fundraising event of the year. Last year our goal was to raise $25,000 and due to the dedication and love of our riders and those that sponsor/donate to them we surpassed that goal by $6,000. The love, compassion and dedication of all of those involved moves me to tears every year. Our main event will take place on July 16 with registration starting at 8am and kickstands up at 1045 at the Deerfield Volunteer Fire Department.

Nationally-Recognized Singer/Songwriters
Sloan Wainwright & Cosy Sheridan
Live at Unity Hall Saturday, April 29 at 8PM
Unity Hall is excited to present nationally-recognized singer/songwriters
Sloan Wainwright and Cosy Sheridan in a special shared concert on Saturday, April 29 at 8PM. Hailing from NY’s Hudson Valley, these dynamic musicians are sure to provide an evening of thrilling and intimate entertainment for local music fans. This is the first appearance at the Hall for each of them.
Sloan Wainwright is a member of that Wainwright Family Tree which includes Loudon Wainwright (her brother) and Rufus (her nephew). Known for her warm and welcoming contralto voice which could fell a redwood, Sloan defies standard categorization. With ten original CDs under her belt, Sloan has a command of a variety of American musical styles including pop, folk, jazz and blues. Her incredible gift is not only her unique songwriting ability but also her sensitive, emotional and at times dramatic vocal renditions of the songs she shares with her audiences.
Singer/songwriter guitarist Cosy Sheridan has been called one of the era's finest and most thoughtful songwriters. Her 2018
release My Fence and My Neighbor landed in the top ten on the Folk DJ chart, and her 2014 CD, Pretty Bird, was listed in Sing Out Magazines as one of the “Great CDs of 2014”. Her concerts are full of energy and emotion. Cosy writes “intelligent and clever lyrics with stickable melodies”, wrote Sing Out. She first caught the attention of national folk audiences in 1992 when she won the Kerrville Folk Festival and the Telluride Bluegrass Festival songwriting contests. The Boston Globe dubbed her “one of the best new singer/songwriters.” Her confident fingerstyle guitar playing often takes center stage.
Each of these artists has led a successful solo career, but over the years they have on occasion joined forces on stage to share the joy of each other’s music.
These shared performances have been described as “upbeat, energetic and moving”. Their comfort level with each other and their audience elevates these infrequent collaborations to special events.
The two women are backed by the strong rhythms and harmonies of bass player Charlie Koch and power house guitarist
The concert will take place in the Landecker Auditorium at Unity Hall, 101 Vanderkemp Ave, Barneveld. Tickets are $18 in advance and are on sale now through Eventbrite and at the Adirondack Cheese Company, 8190 Rte 12 in Barneveld. Tickets on the night of the concert (if available) will be $18 for Unity Hall Members and $20 for non-Members starting at 7:15PM at the box office.
This event is made possible by Unity Hall Foundation member support and sponsor support from 96.9FM WOUR and Town Square Media of Utica.
The Unity Hall music series is also made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNYArts.
Information about membership and other Unity Hall events is available at www.unityhall.com and Facebook/HistoricUnityHa ll.

5th in the UFO Series
1977 UFO Reported in Holland Patent
Not everyone likes to have their name in the paper for all the world to see when they share a story of seeing a UFO. Lately more and more people have found that they are not the only ones to be observing these guests from another world, or other dimension. There will always be people who have seen a UFO and who do now want their name in the paper.
This story was narrated to editor Mike Parker during a recent interview. The man’s name was NOTto be used in the story.
“We were coming home late one night and it was not just raining, it was pouring out. We were doing sound and lights for a rock band at a show, I guess it was about 4:00 o’clock in the morning.
“This happened in about 1977. We were driving to Holland Patent from Stittville on Miller Road when we saw a light in the sky. We pulled the car over less than a mile from the village line. It was like there was a hole in the sky or clouds. The opening was like nothing I have ever seen before and down comes a white flying saucer. It was pulsating and spin-
ning like a record with red lights.
“Even though it was pouring out we hopped out of the car and stood in the rain and got soaking wet.
“The UFO came slowly out of sky and it wasn’t making any noise. Behind one of the houses on Miller Road is a large pond about 100 yards or more of the road.
“It slowed toward the pond and hovered about five feet above the surface of the water. It hovered for less than a minute and then it shot up into the clouds at a fantastic speed and was gone. No noise, just gone. I heard that flying saucers draw energy out of water
but I don’t know.
“I am glad I was with someone, it would have been more unsettling if I had been alone.

We Farmers Do Have a Voice in Washington
I am so honored to be asked to serve again for the 16th year and for the 5th Congressman/Congresswom an for the 22nd Congressional District Brandon Williams Agricultural Advisory Committee. I serve as a dairy, livestock and smaller dairy cooperative representative. I have served in this capacity since 2007 to present, 16 years so far. I first served Michael Acuri 2007-2011, Then Richard Hanna 20012017, Claudia Tenney 20172019, Anthony Brindisi 2019-2021, Claudia Tenney 2021-2023 to our current Congressman Brandon Williams 2023-2025. Congressman Brandon Williams held his first of many meetings at SUNY Morrisville College Campus in Morrisville, NYwhere he met with other agricultural leaders in the 22nd District. Represented both conventionally and organically, were fruit, vegetable, dairy, corn, soybean, wheat, grapes and forestry along with dairy cooperatives, processors, Farm Bureau leaders, Marty
Broccoli from Oneida County Ag Economic Development and 2 retired Ag teachers. The 22nd District is made up of all of Oneida, Madison, Cortland, and Chenango Counties, counties where agriculture is a major part of the economy. The meeting was to meet and greet all the movers and shakers in Congressman William’s district and to inform him on what is important to us here for the 2023 Farm Bill that he will be voting on and adopting this fall. The Farm Bill impacts all US farmers for the next 5 years. Some of the government policies the Farm Bill will have in it is dairy pricing formula, conservation cost sharing programs, soil erosion, water and air quality programs, support pricing programs on all ag commodities and agriculture teaching programs. The farm bill also provides a financial safety net to the agricultural sector such a Dairy Margin Coverage program and Crop Insurance, Farm Service Agency is funded by and administers these programs
and it covers agricultural

This farm bill that impact our farms’economics and livelihoods right here in our county and all of America is only 15%, the remaining 85% is for nutritional programs such as food stamp and school lunch programs. So we farmer’s here in central NYreally do have a voice in Washington and I am honored to represent our area and work with Congressman Brandon William. He really does realize that Ag is the largest and most important industry in his district.
Congressman Brandon Williams is planning a meet and greet in Boonville on May 1st, 2023 from 9am5pm location to be decided soon to listen to the concerns

Donald P. Ernenwein, 74, formerly of the Town of Floyd, passed away at Washington Center Nursing Facility in Argyle, NY, March 27, 2023, peacefully in his sleep with his wife by his side.
He was born March 12, 1949 in Rome, NY, son of Norma (Smith) and James Ernenwein. On June 24, 2011 Don received the gift of life; he was blessed from his transplant which gave him 12 more years to spend with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Don attended school at RFA. After high school, he met his future wife Donna and the two were married July 5, 1969 at St. Leo's in Holland Patent where they became active members. They would often laugh recalling the story of the "hot" drive to Nebraska for their honeymoon. They eventually built their home in Floyd where they enjoyed many years with their children and multiple dogs. Don was involved in mens softball and golf leagues with friends and family. He was an active member of the Holland Patent Legion Post #161 in addition to being a member of the Floyd Town Planning Board. Don worked for Marcy Psychiatric center for 35 years until he retired in 2004. He mostly worked nights until his boys were out of school.
Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, shooting, golfing, playing pitch (more so because Donna wanted to!), and bowling. Don and Donna also loved spending time at their camp in the town of Ohio on the Hinkley Reservoir for many family gatherings. He especially loved "encouraging" the NYYankees and Buffalo
