Knot Revisited

It’s been a while since I talked about fishing knots. I’m going to revisit a couple in upcoming issues that I’ve already written about on occasion to either reach new readers or refresh those that have been following. The first one will be the “Improved Clinch”.

Village Wide Garage Sale

Trenton/Barneveld Town Wide Garage Sale To Be Held on Saturday, June 3rd from 9am-2pm After several years of no Town-wide garage sale, it is time to clean out your closets and homes of those special treasures and place them for sale to your neighbors far & wide. All homes are welcome to participate and we hope to get as many shoppers as possible for this free event. Mappa Avenue in Barneveld will have several vendors participating and we encourage other streets to participate as well. Please come join us as vendor and as shopper to see what bargains can be found.

For the person just starting out in fishing, the first thing you should learn are a couple basic knots. There a couple good apps for your phone that can help. One is called “Knots 3D” but there are a bunch you can look up and choose one you like. They will help everyone from beginner to expert. This week I will highlight the number one knot for every fisher person to know. It’s called the “Improved clinch”. It is used as a terminal knot. That means it’s the furthest knot toward the end of your line that you will tie. Usually to tie on your lure or hook so it’s best tied with monofilament or fluorocarbon line There’s other options people choose for various reasons but all in all it’s easy and fast to tie and used by more people than any other knot. See the illustration.

May 1st was the season opener for both Walleye and Pike seasons and Turkey season. Walleye and Pike will now run until March 15th 2024, while turkey hunting is the entire month of May. I haven’t been for either yet and I’m heading for Ontario today. I’ll eventually get out for Walleyes and will probably only go turkey hunting if one of the kids wants to go. From what I’ve seen so far a lot of the turkeys being taken

are heavy this year with some approaching 25 pounds.

I’ve been to Ontario 3 times now for Lake trout and done well but now there have been quite a few King Salmon showing up in the eastern basin. That’s unusual for this time of year so I’m going to spend some time targeting those.

Park House Coffee House Hosts

Kirk and Miller on May 20th

Fiddle tunes, folk songs, and fancy footwork will all be featured at Park Coffee House in Holland Patent on May 20 when the acoustic duo of John Kirk and Trish Miller take the stage. Showtime is 7:30 PM.

John Kirk is the primary vocalist and instrumental wizard on fiddle, mandolin, and more. Trish Miller plays banjo, guitar, and also adds her stepping dance style that blends traditional clogging and modern percussive steps. Together, this married couple has been working and teaching in upstate New York for over three decades. They present traditional tunes and witty songs with unique arrangements and warm clear tones.

Old time music is the basis for their repertoire, but they also like to mix in some originals, Celtic, early country songs, humorous selections, and Appalachian clog dancing. Many songs and tunes are rooted in the local lore of the northeast woodlands. Their storytelling songs and poetic pieces make their shows fine entertainment for all ages.

In 2022, John was inducted into the North American (and New York) Fiddler’s Hall of Fame.

The duo has twice been nominated for Eddie Awards in New York’s Capitol district. Both of them are music instructors at Skidmore College, and John is part of the music faculty at Bennington College. They have been given numerous grants for concerts and teaching, including their selection by the US State Department to tour various cities in Eastern Europe. As teaching artists, John and Trish have conducted school programs and residencies in music and dance heritage since the 1990's. From Carnegie Hall to their local Flurry Festival in the Saratoga area, John and Trish entertain, and they work to carry on lively traditional tunes and dances.

The doors will open at 7:00 PM, after the sound check, and the concert starts at 7:30 PM.

Admission is $12.00, $5.00 for students, and no

charge for children 12 and younger.

Park Coffee House volunteers will serve homemade desserts, coffee, tea, and cocoa before the show and during the intermission. The donations collected for the refreshments will benefit the local food pantry operated by Foothills Rural Community Ministry, the non-denominational charity that is the parent organization of Park Coffee House.

On June 3, Park Coffee House will mark the end of this concert season with a traditional Local Favorites Fundraiser event.

You’ll find Park Coffee House at the landmark Twin Churches in the village of Holland Patent, just of Main Street (NYS Route 365), across from the park.

Amy Neice is a stunningly gifted artist, with Cubist influences and an unbelievably original palette. With many shows and installations under her belt, her enviable talent has earned her success. But her vision goes beyond the canvas. Over the years, she has had repeated sightings and anomalous experiences.

Her first sighting was with a friend:

“My first actual sighting when I was doing yoga with a friend and I saw an orange orb getting brighter and brighter. And then when it came by her house three white orbs flew out from the bottom and flew over us. It felt as if maybe ten minutes passed which was like four hours. But after that things started to get weird. I came across a friend of the family that lived next

door from us. He doesn't want his name revealed so I will just say Dad’s friend’s son. He woke up in middle of the night with to a funny sound, looked out the window and saw a UFO in our backyard. Lots of weird hauntings and paranormal events seemed to follow this, but there is no way to know if they were connected.”

In another incident her journey seemed to be hastened along:

“We were coming home from Troy and both had our GPS on our phones and neither phone redirected us. We were on the expressway for at least ten

minutes when I started to tell the story about Moth Man to my son. Then I turned around and I saw Ulster. And when I looked over my husband’s shoulder and that's when I saw two UFOs near the highway, just above the tree line side by side. That's when we realized time went by and even the gas meter was lower. We didn't remember anything.”

There is much more to say about her experiences, so we will be returning to Amy’s unique experiences.

To the right: One of many photos Amy took quite recently:

Joan Carpentier Cooley

Joan Carpentier Cooley, 88, of Remsen known to many childhood friends as Carpy, passed away peacefully at her home on April 28, 2023.

Joan was born in Troy, NYon March 1, 1935 a daughter of Gerald Francis and Mary Alma Carpentier. There she and her sister, Jeanie grew up during World War II and its aftermath. Joan was always active, riding her bicycle and playing outside. She loved to dance and was very good at it. Joan had rhythm. She often remembered fondly her days at Lansingburgh High School dancing the Charleston during her lunch hour on the gym floor in her bobby socks. She remained in touch with several of her high school friends throughout her life. After high school, Joan entered the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. While studying, she met her future husband, Bill Cooley, who was a medical intern at the time. Joan often spoke of her years as a nursing student and the friends she made there. She and Bill Cooley were married in 1956. They first settled in West Virginia

where Bill had been drafted into the Air Force and then they stayed to open a family practice. Four of their children were born there Afew years afterward, Bill and his father, Ernest Cooley of East Herkimer, NY, built the family house at the end of Barnhart Road, Remsen, NYon 200 acres of land that Ernest and his wife, Mary Cooley had owned. Joan and Bill lived there for nearly 50 years. They raised their six children in that house. Joan became an enthusiastic gardener while living there. Despite sandy soil, shade and the hungry deer, she grew roses, lilies and all kinds of flower and plants.

Joan always encouraged her children to be physically active, including her daughters. In this spirit, Joan was one of the first coaches of a summer softball team for girls during the 1970’s. She also became licensed to be a soccer referee, refereeing many games at Remsen Central School and the surrounding area. At the age of about 40, Joan learned to play tennis and quickly became quite competitive, participating in many tournaments, particularly mixed

doubles. She was an avid tennis player for decades. She also learned to play golf and quickly became a sharp golfer, also playing in tournaments. However, she mostly played at Glass Hill and thoroughly enjoyed her group of female golfers with whom she regularly spent hours on the golf course. She also enjoyed bridge and played in person and online for many years.

Joan enjoyed travel after he children had grown. She visited Germany, Spain, England, France and Italy. She also traveled in the Caribbean Islands and Mexico. When Joan’s children started to have their own children, she got busy setting her house up for grandchildren. She combed garage sales and had a crib, stroller and toys ready for any little visitors. Joan had a wonderful life. She was loved and she had a lot of love to give. Her strength and spunk live on in her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are Joan’s children, William S. Cooley Jr., Daniel T. Cooley, Laurel A. Cooley, Dawn D. Cooley Stevens and Candace S. Cooley; sister, Jean Carpentier Kemp; numerous grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Dr. William S. Cooley and oldest daughter, Carolyn J. Cooley.

ACelebration of Life will be held at a later date. There are no calling hours. Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, Remsen in entrusted with the arrangements.

Mary W. Evans

Mary W. Evans, 97, of Remsen passed away peacefully on May 4, 2023. She was reunited with Dusty, and no doubt has toned down the party he has had over the last 20 years with many loved ones and dear friends that have left before her.

Mary graduated from Remsen Central School in 1943 and went to work at Rome Army Air Field as a Military Correspondence for the Civilian Branch of United States Army Air Force Services. She was requested to work in the Pentagon to aid in the war effort and was very proud of her time spent in Washington D.C. She returned to Remsen in 1945 just before Dusty returned from the war. The story she told was that Dusty assumed they were getting married immediately upon his return seeing they had kept up a correspondence while he was deployed. In true Mary fashion, she set him straight and told him she wanted to make sure she still liked him before they got married, she only held out for six months, and they were wed on October 5, 1946.

They spent 56 years together and were 2nd generation owners of Evans Equipment Company. Mary was a force to be reckoned with and was always happy to let you know she kept all of the “boys” in line at the business. She was very proud of her sons Greg and Terry, and her grandson Ryan, for continuing to make the family business successful.

Mary and Dusty had many adventures over the years including traveling, snowmobiling, golf outings, card games, party barge rides, dinners out on Friday nights, laughter, and cocktails at the many parties at their Camp on Kayuta Lake, the back porch of their home, Myrtle Beach, Rolling Greens and the many places in between.

Mary lived life to the fullest even after Dusty passed. She still wintered in Ocala and was always on the go making new friends, golfing, and playing cards. At one point her family suggested a cell phone seeing she was never home when they called. She happily obliged and never brought it with her.

Mary cherished the time she spent with her granddaughter Tara, whether it was the adventures they would go on driving to and from Florida twice a year, or the life lessons she shared that aren’t suitable for print.

Anyone that knew Mary was well aware of her quick wit and humor. She had a giggle that was infectious, and always told you how it was. Even up to the very end, she continued to make people laugh and charm them with her personality. Mary had great faith in God and loved her family dearly. She is survived by both her children Greg, and Terry; grandchildren Tara (Justin), and Ryan (Alexis); great-grandchildren Joey, Brady, Reid and Einstein; niece Catherine; and all of her “girls” near and far whom she loved playing cards with.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes all services will be held privately with intermittent at Fairchild Cemetery, Remsen. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Remsen Fire Department, P.O. Box 299, Remsen, NY13438. Ackley-Mills Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.

His brothers David and Ted were on separate ships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf when Ted was killed during a kamikaze attack on the Belleau Wood. Martin was enroute to the Pacific when the war ended.

On May 4, 1945, Martin married Nancy Dean Judson, “The love of my life.”, in the Unitarian Church in Barneveld, NY. They lived in Utica and Barneveld, raising two children. Martin joined his father in operating the Sauquoit Valley Dairy and subsequently worked as an insurance agent for NYLife. He was a lifelong progressive, passionately committed to ideals of fairness and the need for people and their institutions to work for the benefit of all. He was a founding member of the Citizens Association of Greater Utica, member of Utica Rotary, and went to Mexico with Nancy as part of the International Ambassador Project to promote understanding with other cultures. Together, the Browns helped lead a successful community effort to block development of a large land fill in an environmentally sensitive area of South Trenton, NYand established a conservation easement that was the inspiration for the Trenton Greenbelt trail system.

After Nancy’s death in 1986, Martin traveled extensively, continued skiing until he was 94, won a NASTAR slalom race at age 85, played tennis until age 96, and engaged family, friends and neighbors in spirited discussions on politics, history, and the environment. The depth and breadth of his memory and grasp of current events at the age of 104 amazed and delighted all who knew him.

He leaves behind two sons, Martin Judson Brown (Michelle Nugent) and Sheldon T. Brown (Kathryn Weld); three grandchildren: Nathaniel, William, and Matthew Brown; as well as many nieces, nephews and close friends who have cherished their time with him.

Acelebration of Martin’s life will be held June 10, 2023 at the Unitarian Church, 100 Park Ave, Barneveld, NYat 10 AM. Funeral arrangements are provided by Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, Remsen, NYand remembrances can be posted at www.millsfuneralhomes.com.
