At a special ceremony on February 16th, at the Forestport Diner, New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, presented a New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Terrence “Terry” Larkin in recognition of the soon-to-be 102-year-old’s service to our nation. The Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors a New Yorker can receive. Larkin joined the United States Army on Dec. 28, 1942, and proudly served his country with the 1881st Engineer Battalion in the Pacific Theater during World War II. The Rural Star is saddened to report that Larkin passed away on March 4th, just a week shy of his 102nd birthday. His obituary is on Page 17. Larkin was a member of what Tom Brokaw called our nation’s “Greatest Generation” as they fought in WWII.

Farmer Ben from Steuben How This Crazy Weather Affects Us on the Farm
by Ben Simons
Fall usually cools down leading into winter, shorter days, cold and snow. Mid January a bit of a thaw then back cold and snow till March starts thawing for Maple Season, Mud Season and April showers. This year‘s weather is crazy with wide ranging swings in temperature. It is totally difficult to manage the temperature in the cow barns. We try to keep my barns at 50ºF, an ideal temperature for cows. I Have exhaust fans to remove the moisture and carbon dioxide which pulls in fresh air from windows, doors and hay chutes, adjusting them to keep 50ºF and have no drafts on animals. The problem is to manage the moisture, ie humidity because cattle are very susceptible to pneumonia. With night’s at 20ºand we wake to -10ºor 0ºin evening and 35ºin morning it is hard to set the barn up for proper temp and humidity. Modern barns have automatic temp and humidity sensors, tunnel ventilation and/or curtains that raise or lower as needed. The average body temperature of a milk producing cow is 101ºF. I have 80 mature cows in my barn-that is a lot of heat.

Another issue we farmer’s are all concerned about is the hay, winter wheat and winter rye crop. With limited snow cover when the sun comes out it warms the plant up, if warm enough to break dormancy the plant starts growth. If the following weather drops severely it can stunt or kill that plant- we call it winter or frost killed. Alfalfa has a long tap root and when that melted puddle of snow freezes at night it expands popping the crown off its root. Early spring farmers will be out checking fields for brown spots showing winter kill. We will quickly do frost seeding-spread the seed with the cold night and warm days the ground opens and closes in freeze thaw cycle and with the spring rains the seed will germinate. If there is too much winter kill a farmer will replant the whole field. Another concern with the many warm ups or mini mud seasons that when we are out spreading our daily manure we are rutting up our fields. Later when harvesting hay those ruts are like potholes in our field. Maple Season is affected by this weather too. Late January we had a very warm spell and sap started to run. Some Maple producers made some early maple syrup but a problem is the buds or little shell for the leaves started to bloom and then we dropped below 0ºF. Maple producers are a little worried about how the usual March sugaring season will go and how will the trees will leaf out.
Just wanted everyone to know that this crazy weather has us farmers a bit concerned about this coming spring.
Think Spring, think Maple Syrup.

Strange Lights in the Sky
Submitted by Marisabel Padron
It was mid summer, I had taken a nine hour flight to California followed by a long drive in an old Winnebago to make it to the Colorado river in New Mexico.
Waiting for us there was a house boat we rented for a two week vacation trolling through
the vast landscape of rock structures and waterways.
There was limited sleeping space, the adults claimed the bunks inside the houseboat while myself and the others kids slept on the top of the boat.
From up there the sky looked massive, much larger then it did at home, you could see for

what seemed like thousands of miles of sky.
One night as we lay on the top deck starting up at this vast sky I noticed strange stars. These were not falling stars as the light never went out. But they were definitely moving extremely fast and erratically at times. The lights would shoot from one side of the sky to the other in seconds. They zigzagged and crossed in front of us back and forth up and down moving in any direction and turned on a dime. We called up the adults to show them these strange stars we were seeing mostly expecting an explanation as to what they were. When the adults stared puzzled up into that buzzing starry night sky we knew that these lights we not normal stars. We all watched this strage phenomenon for a couple hours, back and forth, curves and
right angles, light-years in seconds. I had to doubt, nor did the other 8 people up on that deck watching this outer space light show, that what we were seeing was nothing that came from earth.

ny’s team of experts.
Northland Communications has consistently grown to meet current and prospective customer growth over the last couple years. With 2023 forecasting additional new positions this calendar year, the organization is projecting an additional 12.5% to their workforce.
“We’ve added quite a few positions, with the goal of meeting demand and setting ourselves up for future success operationally,” said Theresa Jalowiec, vice president of people + talent, Northland Communications. “Between evolving technology and extending our expertise, we are thrilled to be part of the economic growth

Racquet works with Northland’s line crew constructing both aerial and buried infrastructure for Northland’s dedicated fiber network across Central New York.
If you would like to learn more about Northland’s current openings or apply, visit: https://bit.ly/3JTdnfG. Interested applicants can also submit a general application if they’re not sure where they would fit best, and Northland’s people and talent department can help direct them. “Bob” K. Zeigler, 93, of Carol Ave, passed away on the morning of February 22, 2023 at Sunset Nursing Home surrounded by family.
Bob was born in Boonville on August 9, 1929 to John and Lucy (Akins) Zeigler, the third of their five children. He graduated from West Leyden High School in 1948 and was then employed at C. Hughes Motors. From 1951 to 1952 he served in the U.S. Army, completing a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War. Upon his return he became involved in building a family business with his father, John, and brother, Dick. Zeigler’s Garage would become a familiar Boonville landmark for well over sixty years. In 1971 he partnered with his brother Dick to purchase the family business, and proceeded to expand into auto body repair and restoration, thus creating Zeigler Collision, another long-term and familiar business which remained a part of the original building on Ford Street. Bob would also go on to introduce a sport in its infancy known as the “demolition derby” to Boonville and eventually other fair venues throughout the state. The public embraced this spectacle which played to packed grandstands and remains a highlight throughout fairs, large and small. Bob retired from Zeigler Collision in 2018 after 66 years.
Bob was probably most notable as a pioneer in the area of stock car racing. He loved to build motors suited for the racing circuit and get behind the wheel to compete on tracks throughout central and northern New York and Canada. An affable personality belied a fierce competitive persona when the starter dropped the green flag to start the race. Racing became a “full-time past-time” in 1953 when he began working weekday nights on the stock car and racing on the weekends. He had a fascination with carburetion,

constantly tearing down, studying and rebuilding carburetors, and incorporating “homemade” modification that ultimately contributed to his success on the racetrack. Bob’s first feature win came at Northern New York racetrack in 1953, followed by his first track championship at Fort Covington in 1954. Bob went where the money was and whenever a racetrack had a special event race, he was there. Over the July 4th holiday weekend in 1954 Bob won three special event feature races at three different tracks. During his six year stint racing with the Northern Stock Car Club (NSCC) at the Watertown Fairgrounds Speedway beginning in 1956, Bob dominated the competition winning a record 31 features, tied the single season win mark with eight features, and took home three track championships in 1957, 1959, and 1961, the most by any driver in the 19-year history of the NSCC and 26-year history of the Watertown Speedway. This was an extraordinary feat considering his usual starting position was the rear of a 30+ car field. In 1963 Bob made the transition from dirt to asphalt, primarily racing downstate, where he continued with limited success claiming features at the famed Utica-Rome and Spencer racetracks and numerous second place finishes at Owego. In 1964 Bob and his pit crew (brother Dick and friend Charlie Brown) made the weekly Wednesday night trek north to Ottawa’s Capital City racetrack where he claimed eight feature wins en route to the track championship. Midway through 1965 Bob shifted gears, sold the stock car, purchased land, formed a corporation (with brother Dick, cousin Karl John, and fellow race enthusiasts/friends) and built a racetrack. Within two short years Evans Mills Speedway Inc. celebrated its opening day race in August 1967. Bob retired from racing in the late 1970’s. Bob was inducted in the Dirt Motorsports Hall of Fame on May 26th, 2002 as a Pioneer Stock Car Driver and Racetrack Promoter during what many believe to be the “golden age” of stock car racing. The following inscription appears on his hall of fame plaque: “Recognized early for his driving talent, respected late for building a speedway, he authored a short track success story in between.”
In addition to all of this, Bob was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Bob was united in marriage with Elinor Capron on February 27, 1954 at the First Methodist Church in Boonville, and they went on to have three children. He and Elinor were married for 68 years, until her passing on August 4, 2022. Bob is survived by his three children, Steven Zeigler, Chesapeake, VA, Scott Zeigler (Diane Gallo), Boonville, and Patricia (John) Brand, Alder Creek; five grandchildren, Cierra (Tim) Bauer, Tyler (Katelyn) Zeigler, Arcadea (Lyle) Scott, Brittany (Donald) Wisniewski and Ashley Brand; six great-grandchildren, Parker and Bridger Bauer, Austin, Lily Ann, and Adelea Scott and Adelaide Wisniewski; a sister, Carol (Butch) Johnson, Boonville; as well as many extended family members including Dar Jenkins. He was predeceased by his wife, Elinor, parents, John and Lucy Zeigler, and three brothers, Donald Zeigler, Richard “Dick” Zeigler and Karl Zeigler.
In keeping with Bob’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Private funeral services will be held for the family. Donations in Bob’s memory can be made to Lewis County Humane Society or an animal shelter of one’s choice. An animal lover, Bob gave a home to many shelter and homeless pets over the years.

Terrance R. Larkin
Terrance R. Larkin, 101, of Forestport, passed away suddenly on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Utica, just one-week shy of his 102nd birthday.
Affectionately known as Terry, he was born in Davenport, Iowa, on March 11, 1921, a son of Peter and Bertha Maack Larkin. Before Terry was three weeks old, his father passed away suddenly and Terry moved to Forestport with his family. When relating the above, in keeping with his sharp wit and sense of humor, Terry would proclaim that he remembered getting off the train at Forestport Station when he was just weeks old.
Terry continued to grow up in Forestport, living on Dutch Hill and attending Forestport Central School. Later he and his family moved to Brooklyn, where he continued his education. Before WWII, Terry returned to Forestport and purchased what became the Larkin home on River St.
On December 28, 1942, Mr. Larkin entered the service of his country, serving in the U.S. Army, with the 1881st Engineer Battalion in the in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Corporal Larkin saw action throughout Pacific Theater, stationed in Luzon, Bismarck Archipelago, Southern Philippines and New Guinea, where he was wounded in action, during a mission to observe a Japanese airstrip.
From December, 1943, to September, 1944, his unit of the Aviation Engineers, participated in 10 major landings and also facilitated and enhanced tactical and strategic air power for the forces, resulting in increased support for our ground troop units to drive the Japanese troops out of their respective areas. On December 5, 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Tec 5, from Fort Dix, NJ. For his meritorious service, Corporal Larkin was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal W/Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon W/2 Bronze Stars embossed on the ribbon, a Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal.
On February 16, 2023, in a ceremony taking place at the Forestport Diner, and lead by Senator Joe Griffo, Mr. Larkin was awarded The New York State Senate Liberty Medal, which commemorated his service to the United States, while serving his country in WWII. The Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors a New Yorker can receive and is presented to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
Following his military service, Terry returned to

Forestport. For over thirty years, Mr. Larkin was employed as a parachute packer, for the U.S. Department of Defense at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome.
On December 20, 1947, Terry was united in marriage with Louise Jones, of Boonville. Mrs. Larkin passed away on November 19, 1995. After Terry’s retirement, he and Louise enjoyed spending many winters in Florida.
To refer to Terry as playing the role of “Mr. Forestport,” is an understatement. He was a member of the Forestport Presbyterian Church and for many years he volunteered in preparation for and as he would say, “straightening up,” after church related dinners, bazaars and other events, as well as assisting with events at the Forestport Fire Hall and Fire Fighters. Terry served as the ribbon cutter on the new River Road Bridges over the Black River grand opening ceremony, on September 29, 2013. For many years he greatly enjoyed visiting with and entertaining family and friends on his front porch during the summer and watching the Water Ball Competition during Old Forestport Days. When he was past the age of 97, he suited up and participated in the Water Ball contest. He was a daily fixture “in time for Breakfast,” at the Forestport Diner.
He was a member of Charles J. Love Post American Legion of Harlan J. Hennessey Post V.F.W., both of Boonville and on November 29, 2018, in Foresport, Terry was presented with a Lifetime Membership in the Order of the Purple Heart.
Terry was renowned for and will be fondly remembered for his lightning quick wit, sharp sense of humor and funny sayings. In addition, he was a talented artist who painted oil paintings and further reflected his sense of humor with his wooden creations of a tax shelter, “Forestport Flash Light,” exploding out-house, “Spouse Remote Control,” Donut Trees, and Donut Seeds and of course, his creation of a “Quarter Pounder,” which are all unforgettable. Most of all, Terry was a humble person who loved and served his fellowman and a person who always wanted to avoid the limelight. His advice to live a long life was “to stay active and avoid doctors!”
In addition to his son, Raymond, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Terry is survived by his granddaughter in law, Jesse Larkin; great grandsons, Andrew and Terry, all of Council Bluff, IA. He was predeceased by a grandsons Eric Larkin and Ed Lyon and by his daughter in law, Donna Larkin, in November, 2022. Also surviving is a grandson, Bill and Debra Lyon, Prospect, and their family, Alexis Lyon, Adrienne Lyon, Brad Porter and Eric Porter, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Terry was the last of his siblings and was predeceased by nine brothers; George, Raymond, Halley, Homer, Gene, Peter, Bill, Marx (Mike), who was killed in action while serving in the U.S. Army, in Germany, in WWII, on April 11, 1945, Larry and by one sister, Veronica (Larkin) St. Denis.
Terry’s family wishes to express a note of heartfelt thanks and grateful appreciation to the many “Kind Folks of Forestport,” who, through the years kept an eye on Terry and enabled Terry to live in his home until he passed away.
Visitation hours were at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc. Boonville, where funeral services will begin at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday. Interment with Military Rites will be in the spring in Beechwood Cemetery, Forestport. Memorial contributions may be made to Forestport Presbyterian Church, 11298 Woodhull Road, Forestport, NY13338 or to The Forestport Firefighters, Inc., 11965 River Road, Forestport, NY13338.
Dawn Elaine Zielenski
Our angel Dawn Elaine Zielenski, 63, received her wings on Friday February 24th, 2023 while surrounded by her loving family. Dawn was the daughter of the late Harry and Ann Oleynick. She was born in Oneida, NYand raised in Verona, NY. She graduated from V.V.S. Central High School and went on to be a certified Dental Assistant and a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She was most recently employed as an LPN at Digestive Disease Medicine of Central New York.
Dawn was a loving wife, mother, and sister who was always extremely devoted to caring for her family. She considered her greatest achievement to be raising two children with admirable values, who uphold many of her endearing qualities. She possessed a certain elegance, class, and uniqueness that was her own and rarely seen. She was never boastful or resentful — always a realist who found the best method to take care of everyone and everything.
Among her many exceptional talents, being a wellaccomplished artist was one of her most cherished. Dawn created many oil and watercolor paintings throughout her life and won the 'Jurors Choice Award' with her oil painting at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Sidewalk Art Show in 2021. She also had a great love for horses since childhood and considered horseback riding her lifelong passion. She had a natural connection and extensive knowledge with everything in nature, often enjoying gardening and walks through the woods. She kept the house warm and bright with flowers, always filled with her beauty and love.
Dawn will always be greatly missed, admired, and remembered for her gentle, kind, and humble spirit. She is survived by her husband Michael, son Michael (partner Fallon), her daughter Rachael (partner Tom), her sister Diane (Richard) Crill, her fur grandbaby King, and her beloved horse Camelot. Dawn is predeceased by her parents, Harry and Ann Oleynick. Her surviving family would like to extend its gratitude to her friends, family, and colleagues who offered such tremendous support, encouragement, and prayers. Through those who had the privilege of knowing and loving Dawn, her legacy will continue to live on forever.
