Outdoor Corner

The last month has been tough to be an outdoor writer that tries to write about his recent outdoor activities. There isn’t as much going on in the winter but there’s always coyote hunting and ice fishing.

The warmer weather and lack of snow has kept the coyote hunting slow, I’m at 6 so far this year (and

a couple misses) but that's well below my average.

The warmer weather has also kept me off the ice so far. Hopefully that will change soon. My niece and nephews have next week off so hopefully I can get them out fishing.

One thing we found time to do was some target shooting. Today before the

Super Bowl we went through several hundred rounds in a vast array of calibers. We started with some .22 and .22 magnums. Then some 9mm handguns and shotguns. Finally we finished up shooting some .223 and .308 rifles at a gong.

It’s always fun watching the kids rib each other about

their turn shooting, of course then the old guys have to show them up.

Author Cheryl Pula Spoke to the Holland Patent Lions about Oneida County’s Role in Anti-Savery Crusade

The Holland Patent Lions Club welcomed author Cheryl Pula to be the guest speaker at their January 17th dinner meeting. Pula can speak on many topics and members of the Lions Club opted for the antislavery movement that began in the Upstate New York community.

Cheryl A. Pula coauthored and edited the book titled “With Courage and Honor”; Oneida Counties role in the Civil War.

In addition to the

Abolition Movement, the book features stories about the 14th, 26th, 97th, 117th, and the 146th New York Volunteer Infantries.

The book was published in 2010 by Eugene Paul Nassar Ethnic Heritage Studies Center at the then Utica College. The book includes many stories, maps and photos of the Oneida County boys in blue and their service and participation in Civil War battles.

The Holland Patent Lions Club holds two monthly meetings on the first and third Tuesdays at the Holland Patent American Legion Post 161 on Depot Street in the village. The dinner meetings start at 6:30 pm and run a couple hours each. Anyone wishing to join the club may stop by the legion on meeting nights or contact Lion’s third vice president Michael Parker at the Rural Star office.

Cheryl A. Pula can be seen holding a copy of the book she co-authored and edited. It is titled “With Courage and Honor”; Oneida Counties role in the Civil War. “With Courage and Honor” is a hard cover book.

The Price of Eggs

Even though the price of eggs is high they are still a good buy and here is why:

Eggs seem to be a hot subject at this time, $5 to $10 per dozen. The truth is everything that comes to the farm and leaves the farm is powered by diesel that has doubled since last year. Diesel was $2.10 per gallon and now is $5.59 per gallon. Chicken grain was $17 per hundred pounds last year, and now is $25. Then there are the cartons. Last year it was .26 cents per carton , this year they are .36 cents. Truck drivers make $25-$40 per hour. The retail store has electric lights , refrigeration and labor to stock the shelves so at the end of the day the farmer that produces those eggs is still making the same as he did in 2021-22 when eggs were $2.00 per dozen locally.

From a chick to egg laying hens takes 6-8 months of costs or inputs like: feeding, warmth, water, cleaning and care. There is normally a mortality loss for various reasons. Last year day old chicks were 2.59 each and this year 5 dollars per chick. Some producers buy chickens ready to lay called pullets , last year the price was 7.25 each and this year 10-12 dollars per bird.

The average egg laying chicken on a commercial farm lays eggs for 2 years . Most people don’t realize it takes 14 hours of sunlight to produce an egg. So if the sunlight is out 8 hours per day here in the Boonville/Steuben area then the farmer has to have lights on an extra 6 hours per day to get 1 egg per day per chicken. By having the lights on the chickens lay year round and only lay productively for almost 2 years. The flocks without extra light for winter basically take the winter off and will lay for 2-3 years.

The Avian Influenza killed 44 million egg laying chicken in the US , that is roughly 5% of laying chickens .Last summer the Avian Flu had infected the wild bird population and when they migrated south this past fall they spread the flu across the farms. Now the worry is this spring migration north and how will that affect our flocks big and small.

The war in Ukraine has also affected egg prices. One of the largest egg farms in Ukraine had 4.5 million layers was destroyed by the war. This affects our commodity prices of eggs in the US and locally.

As you can see eggs are a really good buy even at the price they are. Buy and support your local egg farmer. Thank-you

1976 UFO Reported in Floyd

Submitted by Ron Cardinal of Floyd. Well it went like this. When I was 15 yrs old in the fall of 1976, the came time as the MLB World Series was going on. The Yankees won that year by the way. I was at a little store that was called Patrikas near the corner of Kilbourne Rd and Rt. 365 in the Town of Floyd. They had a few pinball machines and foosball tables in there.

On this day there were about 10 other kids from the neighborhood and the woman that was working there. I stepped outside and my neighbor Kevin Stickles was sitting on a bench looking up in the air with an astonished look on his face. So I looked up to see what he was looking at and I asked him.... "%^@#&* do you see that?" And he responded to me. "What the &%#@# do you think I'm looking at?".

This thing in the air looked like the Mother

Ship from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It was huge, I mean about a 100 yards wide or more. And it was only about 1500 ft high in the air. I can judge that height better than an average person as I was Paratrooper in the U.S. Army for 4 years and most of my jumps were from that height or less. The object in the sky was a perfectly round disk with a white light on top, in the middle and red lights all around it. It appeared to be hovering as the red lights looked like they were spinning counter clockwise. Now mind you this thing was literally in our FACE. It made no sound whatsoever. It was freaking huge. I wanted more witnesses to see this so I ran back inside the store and I yelled " AUFO AUFO" and the kids seemed to look at me with no concern like I was just joking to them and I started yelling "Really Really,

I'm not kidding ". I went back out and then a few of them came out.

Everyone that first came out got loud about what we were seeing so then everyone came out. I was a little nervous at first that we might get beamed up or something but as it slowly moved over and past us I started to feel a bit better. I could hear others shouting with panic “It's the end of the World".

The bicycle ride home was about 3 miles. We rode home faster than ever like we were racing. When we got to my neighbors house I called the Airforce Base at Griffiss in Rome to report it and they told me other reports were called in. They said it was a airplane pulling a Price Chopper sign as an advertisement. That was when Price Chopper first opened in Rome. Well I'm here to tell you that it was no airplane at our sighting. Absolutely not.

What we witnessed was either a alien craft or a secret government project. It wasn't an airplane pulling an advertisement. To this day some of the kids that were there will not even talk about it because it traumatized them so severely. And I know of one who literally had to go for professional help to handle it mentally.

But I'm OK with it. I Know what I saw and I can't deny it...

Derek Warfield & the Young Wolfe Tones to Perform

Aspecial group of Irish men and women have been responsible for preservation of the tradition of Irish ballad singing over the past 50 years. Derek Warfield is a distinguished name among them. Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones are bringing that musical tradition forward with a reverence for Ireland’s past and the energy and optimism of a new generation of Irish musicians.

Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones are thrilled to be coming to share their music at the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley on Thursday, March 2, 2023.

2016 was a pinnacle year for Derek and The Young Wolfe Tones when they were chosen to perform on the 24th April at the 1916 centenary commemorations at the General Post Office in O’Connell Street Dublin at 12.o’clock noon. This was the exact same time the Irish proclamation was read by Padraig Pearse one hundred years ago to the minute. As Derek is quoted as saying “of all the honors bestowed on the Wolfe Tones old and young, this privilege was the most significant. It was an honor to perform the music and songs of remembrance and the patriotic ballads that were sung by the volunteers inside the building during the struggle for our freedom, and we performed them with the same passion and emotion.”

In 2001, after nearly 40 years performing, the legendary Wolfe Tones parted with their founder and leader – Derek Warfield. No other Irish folk group, before or since, told the story of Ireland so completely and unapologetically. But for Derek’s hunger and desire to continue to further the story of Ireland through song, an ancient tradition might have lost perhaps its most iconic figure. In 2008, Derek put together a band containing some of the finest musicians and singers in Irish music –The Young Wolfe Tones.

Derek Warfield’s 50 years of experience coupled with the talent and energy of The Young Wolfe Tones brings the old tradition of Irish balladry into a new age. The story of Ireland is transmitted in their music and song and illuminated by the outstanding musicianship of these wonderful ambassadors of a new generation of traditional players. Derek Warfield and The Young Wolfe Tones deliver Ireland’s traditional music and folk songs with an energy and skill that shows the quality of contemporaries within that tradition. The patriotic spirit of Irish music carried through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s by the Wolfe Tones now marches on in the dynamic sound of The Young Wolfe Tones.

Derek Warfield’s lifelong passion for engaging people

in the music and story of Ireland is also very present in the other band members: “Communication with a live audience through music is what I believed to be of primary importance when I founded the Old Wolfe Tones in 1963. In performing with The Young Wolfe Tones, I continue to communicate with audiences while also passing on an important tradition to a new generation. But perhaps most importantly, it has been fun and enjoyable and every performance gets better. The experience has reinvigorated me and given the young players and singers the opportunity to display their skills and talents around the world”

Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones were the official performers for 2015 The Friends Of Ireland Speaker John Beohner St Patrick’s Day Luncheon in Capitol Hill for President Obama, Vice President Biden, Taoiseach Enda Kenny & many other distinguished friends of Irish America.

“Since the Old group disbanded, The Wolfe Tones’ front man and founder member Derek Warfield has hit a particularly creative streak. The impeccable versatility of ‘The Young Wolfe Tones’propels fresh and invigorating workings of old and new numbers with masterful arrangements of songs and highly absorbing tune sets.” - Sean McGheeEditor of Rock ’N’Reel

“The Young Wolfe Tones bring a youthful energy to songs like Some Say the Devil Is Dead and Get out Ye Black and Tans.” - Mike Farragher - www.irishcentral.com

Derek Warfield - New York Society Dublin Man of The Year 2013 and The AOH Spirit Of Freedom Award 2017.
