The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who helped make our Christmas of Kids program such a success.

Every year our Kiwanis club, in conjunction with the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, collects, wraps and distributes gifts for children from Forestport, Woodgate, Otter Lake, Thendara, Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Inlet, Raquette Lake, as well as Long Lake and Indian Lake. We also provide a free children’s movie, including popcorn and soft drink, hosted by The Strand Theater in Old Forge, with a special visit from Santa.

The Adirondacks are a beautiful tourism destination which is a main source of income for many of its citizens. This

Deer antlers are funny things. No two sets are the same and neither are the deer they come from. Deer lose their antlers each year and grow a new set. Typically a deers antlers will get bigger each year until the deer is about 6 or 7 years old. Typically a deers largest rack during his life will be around that age. The reason for that is at 5 years old their bodies are fully grown and they now have the extra energy to put into

the growth of the rack. After that point there antler growth may start to turn the other way the following year. That’s not always the case but that is the average. The main reason they may not grow as big a rack once they reach that age is they wear their teeth out. Once the deers teeth start to wear they can’t take in the nutrition they need to continue growing larger racks and put the energy they do get into just keeping them going and surviving.

There are several factors that determine when a buck will shed his antlers. Their health, nutrition and genetics all play a roll. Another important factor is their testosterone level. Once a buck senses that all the does in his area are bred and he starts to lose interest in breeding his testosterone levels that were recently at a seasonal high begin to drop fast. He no longer needs the bulky antlers weighing him down so he will lose them to help reduce stress on him through a possible bad winter.

This year I tracked a buck in Massachusetts on December 21st that already lost his antlers. I talked to a friend of mine out there that said 2 of his friends did the same thing that week. He said there was a very poor mast crop there this year so

poor nutrition could be the culprit for the early shedding.

In contrast to that, today, January 29th, I picked up a road kill buck locally for my coyote bait that still had its antlers. It was a young buck from farm country that most likely had good nutrition and plenty of does around while he waited his turn to breed. You just never know when they’ll shed but this years low snow levels might

give you something to do and go out and look for some sheds.

Wardner Tells of a 1957 Close Encounter with a UFO

Recent changes in the Armed Forces’disclosure of mysterious phenomena now take the stigma away from talking about close encounters with unidentified flying objects. No longer do people have to protect their reputations by keeping silent. Sometimes they might see a stationary object, like last issue’s front page photograph of the multi-colored star explained. The motion of that photo was caused by moving the

camera, not a moving celestial event.

This issue Ed Warner of Holland Patent shares his story.

“In 1955 I got out of the Navy and decided to attend Syracuse University,” Wardner said.

He was hanging around Dolgeville, where he grew up, and joined the Dolgeville Methodist Youth Group.

“We were going to Pine Lake for a dance. When I got there I saw this girl

who was a good dancer but I wasn’t and I asked her to dance anyway,” he said.

Her name was Virginia, and Wardner was smitten with her, as they say. At the time he didn’t know if she felt the same about him. But they started dating, the beginnig of a life-long marriage.

After Ed finished his first year at S.U. he would travel back on weekends to see Virginia.

He didn’t have a car but now he needed one, as he was tired of catching rides. He ended up buying a 1954 Hudson Wasp, a four door coup which he said was better than a Cadillac.

This report took place in 1957, Ed was 25 years old at the time.

“I was on my way to visit Virginia in Bleecker, a town north of Gloversville. It was a dark night and I came down a hill and the road led up another hill in front of me. As I was

about to head up the hill a bright light came down out of the sky above my car.”

There wasn’t any noise at first but as the craft got closer above the roof, Warner began to hear a noise.

“I started to hear a buzzing and it got louder as it got closer,” he said. The light got brighter and brighter and the car started to get real hot. It got so hot that the engine and the lights shut down. There was such a strong energy field that the thermal cutoff switch was triggered.”

Wardner said that the Hudson was one of only a few cars that had that device.

The light rose into the sky and disappeared.

After a few minutes the

lights came back on and Ed was able to restart the engine and proceeded to his girlfriend’s house.

“I tried to explain to her parents but as they were just getting to know me they must have thought I was batty.”

Perhaps that is why people have waited to tell their stories.

Elizabeth Yvonne (Thomas) Francis,

Elizabeth Yvonne (Thomas) Francis, 88, of Remsen died on January 5, 2023.

Betty was born at the family homestead on Bardwell’s Mill Road, in Remsen, NY, on August 18, 1934, the only child of Didymus R. Thomas and Violet (Mathias) Thomas. She graduated from Remsen Central School with the Class of 1952. On August 23, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Francis, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Boonville, NY. They made their home in Remsen. Dick died on March 22, 2006. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters, Robin, Pamela, and Wendy.

Betty was raised by her loving parents on the family farm. Growing up near Kayuta Lake allowed her to enjoy swimming, boating, and fishing. She played clarinet in the school band and sang in the school chorus and church choir. Dick shared her love of music, and they often went to country and western dances with their friends. They also enjoyed traveling. She loved to cook and bake and did both to perfection. She was especially known for her wedding cakes, pies, doughnuts, and jars of jams and jellies. She took great pleasure in having family and friends to the house for dinner. Betty was also skilled at sewing, crocheting, and gardening. She loved all of the family pets and had many over the years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Boonville, and often helped cook for the dinners held at the church.

In addition to her own children, Betty was like a mother to many young people. The Francis house was open to everyone and many enjoyed being treated like family by Betty and Dick—love, advice, and discipline were given as needed.

Betty was known for her strong work ethic. She worked for many years in the office at the Dairylea Ice Cream plant in Utica and owned White Birch Inn for a short time, but the job she loved most was driving school bus for Remsen Central School. She looked forward to each new school year and also loved driving the sports teams to their games. She shared a million laughs with her fellow bus drivers. She truly cared for her “kids on the bus” and would make them special treats such as Christmas cookies.

Betty was an amazing woman, was totally devoted to Dick

and her family and friends, and was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her three daughters: Robin Kinne of Watertown, Pamela Wilmot and her husband Loren of Remsen and Wendy Piekielniak and her husband Michael Jr., of Remsen; grandchildren Michelle Lighthall and her husband Carl Jr. of Prospect, Megan Howard and her husband Alex of Watertown and Richard Zachary Kinne and his wife Laura of Chaumont, Shaun Wilmot of Florida, Heidi Wills Tuttle and her family of Carthage; great-grandsons, Ethan Stirling and Dalton Stirling of Prospect; Dick’s sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Allen Broadbent of Rome and their children, Leslie, Lisa, Bill, and Jamie and their families; the Richardson family of Rochester; Jerry & Elsie Wells and their children, Tina, Sandy, Jerry Jr., and Richard; and many special cousins, friends, and neighbors, both past and present.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, her parents, Dick’s parents, Howard and Ruth Francis, her Godparents, Barnabas and Eliza Mitchell, friends Clyde and Elsie Roberts, Ray and Marilyn Hoffman, and David, Deed, and John Richardson and many other friends and family members.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Rev. Linda Logan and all of Betty’s care givers, especially Dr. Sam Gooldy and all who work in his office and the entire staff and her roommate, Shirley Corbett, at the Lutheran Care Facility in Clinton. May God Bless each of you for helping us care for Mom.

ARequiem Eucharist will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Schuyler Street, Boonville, NY, with the Rev. Linda Logan officiating. Calling hours will be at the Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, 9597 Main Street, Remsen, NY, on Sunday, January 8, 2023, from 2-6 p.m. Burial will be in the Spring in Fairchild Cemetery, Remsen, NY.

The family requests donations be given in Betty’s name to either Trinity Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 151, Boonville, NY13309, or Remsen Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 299, Remsen, NY13438.

Jesse Williams and the First Cheese Factory

Just North of Rome, at the site of the current New York State Fish Hatchery, the modern cheese industry was born in 1851. Jesse Williams was a successful farmer and cheese maker but believed by working together as cooperative dairies, farmers could maximize their profits. This led him to start the first cheese factory in the United States, a move that revolutionized agriculture not only locally, but across the nation. Patrick Reynolds, Director of Public Programs at the Oneida County History Center will discuss the origin of the Cheese Factory System.

Jesse Williams was born in Rome in 1798 and like his father became a farmer. Although there was considerable cheese making going on in New York, its market value

suffered from inconsistency. Jesse objected to the quality as well as the lack of uniformity in size. To address these issues, he invented machinery and equipment that guaranteed high quality cheese made in uniform sizes. 1851 marked the first year he combined the milk from his own farm with that of his son’s farm. From that small partnership grew the cheese factory industry. He built the first cheese factory in the United States at “Highland Mills” adjacent to the current fish hatchery. Soon dozens of area dairy farmers were delivering their milk to him to make cheese. The first year he produced 100,000 pounds of cheese and was an immediate success. Quickly his ideas spread to other sections of the country and the world.

As news spread of

Williams’success, dairymen from across the country flocked to Rome to learn about the new process. Williams and his wife answered as many questions as they could to spread the gospel of cooperative cheese making. Within 15 years, there were 500 such factories in New York alone.

In 1864, Williams’success led to the formation of the New York State Cheese-maker’s Association, which soon thereafter became the American Dairy Association.

On the 100th anniversary of Jesse’s cheese factory, John H. Kraft, president of Kraft Foods, proclaimed that “pioneers like Jesse Williams… [fathered] the ideas and tools that have made America great.” This man, Kraft said, “exemplified the spirit which has made the dairy industry the largest agricultural industry in America.”

Jesse Williams died in 1864 at age 67. At that time Oneida County was making over eight million pounds of cheese per year. Williams never patented his cheese-making inventions but gave them to the agricultural world.

The program is free and open to everyone.
