Holland Patent Girls Wrestling Team
For quite a few years now there have been a few stalwart girls wrestling on boys teams and Holland Patent was no exception. It had awkard moments especially when a boy got beat by a girl. Things have changed, and on December 7 the girls competed against the Camden girls team. It was a great match to watch. Often at a match words of encouragement and advice flows from the team, but let it be knownthat the girls had more advice, at a lowder decible level. Back Row, from the left: Autumn Razzano, Claire Favata, Autumn Fountain, Hanna Kusimierzack, Ariayana Montoya, Cadence Torres and Hailey Southwick. Front row: Coach Doxsteder, Crimson Francis, Alyssa Russell, Stephanie Groholski and Adison Snyder.
Several storms of note passed through the North Country, dumping feet of snow and causing power outages. Currently the forcast is for rain and for highs in the 40s and only a couple nights below freezing. This photograph was taken at Tolpa’s Auto Parts, 10729 French Road, Remsen.
Every year, the Rural Star posts a tribute to those friends, neighbors and family members who have passed away during the past year. An empty plate at the family table is a sad thing, but sadder still would it be if we didn’t take time to honor them.
The tribute starts on Page 12.

Sheriff Maciol Hosts Annual Snowmobile Press Conference
This afternoon, Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol hosted the Sheriff’s annual Snowmobile Safety Press Conference at the TC Riders Snowmobile Club located on Wolcott Hill Road in the Town of Camden as the snowmobile season kicks off.
In addition to members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Snowmobile Patrol Unit, Sheriff Maciol was joined by the NYS Forest Rangers, the City of Rome Police Department, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the NYS Snowmobilers Association, Oneida County Legislator Mike Waterman (represents Camden) and several members of the TC Riders Snowmobile Club.
At the press conference, numerous safety tips were discussed along with areas of concerns that law enforcement will again be focusing on this year. Some of the laws that will be strictly enforced will include operating a snowmobile while intoxicated, speeding violations, registration violations, and exhaust modifications.
All of New York’s laws and regulations regarding snowmobiling can be found athttps://parks.ny.gov/documents/recreation/snowmobiles/SnowmobilersGuide.p df .
Sheriff Maciol also stressed the fact that nearly all of the 650 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Oneida County are on
private land, so riders must do all they can to respect the property owners including staying on the marked trails, slowing down near residential areas, and not littering.
Also, in New York State, youth ages 14 through 17 years old may operate a snowmobile, on lands upon which snowmobiling is allowed, without adult or other supervision if they have completed a snowmobile safety training course recognized by the State of New York. If youth ages 14 through 17 years have not completed the training course, they may operate a snowmobile if accompanied by (within 500 feet of) a person who is at least 18 years of age. Youth ages 10 through 13 mayoperate a
snowmobile, on lands upon which snowmobiling is allowed, if they have completed a snowmobile safety training course recognized by the State of New York and are accompanied by (within 500 feet of) a person who is at least 18 years of age. Children less than 10 years old or less than age 14 without a safety certificate may operate a snowmobile only on lands owned or leased by their parent or guardian. If you are in need of, or interested in taking a snowmobiler education class, please check the NYS DEC link ( https://parks.ny.gov/recreation/snowmobiles/safetycourses.aspx?cnty=Oneida &sort=1#form ) for upcoming classes in Oneida County.

No, I’m not talking about the other night at the bar, I’m talking about the weather! The beginning of December started out pretty cold. With hunting season coming to a close, at least in
the northern zone, a lot of outdoorsmen we’re looking forward to the lakes making some ice. I saw a few people out on the backsets of Delta lake and even a few on the main lake right
before the new year. Well that all changed with the warm temperatures and rain we’ve now had for about a week. It will take a few cold calm nights to get that first layer of clear ice back now. Hopefully we don’t get much snow on top of it until it gets some thickness built up. The snow will act as insulation keeping the cold air away from the lake water.
We’ll get the ice, just don’t be too anxious and go before it’s safe. Ice fishing is totally safe as long as
your smart about it. Going before your sure its safe isn’t worth a few fish or the life of someone trying to rescue you.
Another Option
In the past I’ve talked about the Alberto knot that I use for joining braided line with monofilament mainline or fluorocarbon leader. There’s another good option that’s fairly easy to tie. It’s called the Double Uni or sometimes called the Uni to Uni knot. It’s a good option when your using a lure that vibrates. It won’t work its way loose from constant vibration the way an Alberto may. See the graphic from netknots.com to learn how to tie it.
Show Season
Joe DiNitto and I will have a booth and be giving seminars on tracking deer at the Yankee Sportsman's Classic
January 20-22 in Essex Junction Vermont. Grab a hotel and stop up. It’s always a good time!

Busy, Successful Year for Kuyahoora Valley Rotary
The Rotary Club of the Kuyahoora Valley has had a busy, successful year. In May the club had an auction, raising money to present awards to six graduating seniors from Poland and West Canada Valley Central Schools totaling $4,500.
They also gave dictionaries to all third graders in both schools. The club does the highway pickup between Poland and Newport each year in April and again in October. In September the club is responsible for parking concession at the Snow Bash in the Town of Ohio.
The club provided food baskets for 20 needy families in each Poland and West Canada school districts at
Thanksgiving and again at Christmastime. Club members rang the bell for the Salvation Army at the Herkimer Walmart.
This year’s Christmas party was a multi-club event with the Adirondack Foothills Rotary Club. Over 60 attended at the Ohio Tavern. Winners of the 50/50 drawing were announced then. $1,500 -- Matthew Hughes; $600 -Barbara Tasovac; and $400 -- Richard Hazard. The Rotary thanks everyone who purchased tickets!
New members are always welcome. They meet Tuesday nights at 6:00 pm at the Town of Russia office building. For further information please contact current president, Mary Beth Greene, at 315-796-1290.

Robert Taylor, a member of the Society of Automotive Historians, will discuss Frank Snell of Waterville, who built a horseless carriage in 1900. Snell was an innovative mechanic who took a genuine interest in working with iron and steel. It was said that whatever tool he needed to make the car work, he fabricated himself.
The Waterville Times reported on November 19 that “Frank Snell, who has been building an automobile during the past few months, had it far enough toward completion to give it trial on Tuesday. It ran nicely but
was rather too fast for everyday use on our roads. He is remedying the defect." The article noted that the top speed of “the horseless carriage” reached was 15-20 miles an hour--a speed only achieved by locomotives at that time.
