As we step into the vibrant season of summer, we are excited to offer a range of interactive classes and engaging monthly events that will make this summer one to remember This summer, RUI University is focused on blending fun, learning, and community connection. This summer, we’re offering:

Interactive Summer Classes: Dive into unique, hands-on courses that blend education with creativity. From culinary classes to outdoor fitness challenges, these interactive sessions are designed to ignite your passion for learning while fostering a sense of community

Monthly Events to Look Forward To:

June - Juneteenth Outing: Join us as we celebrate Juneteenth with a special outing to a local Black-owned restaurant. This is an opportunity to experience the culture, history, and delicious flavors that shape our shared heritage

July - History of Ice Cream: Cool off this summer with a deliciously sweet history lesson on the origins of ice cream. Taste different varieties, learn about its cultural significance, and explore the evolution of everyone’s favorite summer treat!

Benefits of Yoga for Pain Management

Yoga reduces pain levels in individuals with osteoarthritis of the knee, other osteoarthritis conditions and carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and chronic low-back pain Older adults and individuals with mobility limitations may find Chair Yoga particularly useful to support pain management. Chair Yoga is a gentle, adapted form of yoga which can accommodate your individual level of flexibility and support you in building core body strength, improved range of motion, and an overall reduction in pain.

Benefits of Yoga Yoga Improves Sleep

Research suggests that yoga and meditation can improve sleep quality and reduce disturbances Studies have shown that regular yoga practice may be especially helpful for older adults, leading to quicker sleep onset and longer sleep duration. Breath techniques in yoga can calm the mind, ease worry, and promote a relaxed state ideal for better rest making yoga a promising approach for managing insomnia.

Dink Wiseman is a certified instructor in Yoga (AAAI/ISMA), Tai Chi (Divine Flow Tai Chi Chuan), and Taijifit Flow (Taijifit Academy). He also holds training in Bamboo Fusion and Relaxation Therapy. Dink brings a calm, supportive approach to wellness, helping participants improve balance, flexibility, and inner peace through gentle movement and mindfulness.

Awaken & Align

Awaken & Align is a multi-sensory wellness series thoughtfully designed for seniors in independent living communities. This program offers a dynamic blend of breath-centered mindfulness, gentle chair-based yoga, guided meditations, sound healing, tactile sensory engagement, and expressive art activities. Each session introduces a unique sensory theme that promotes calm, creativity, self-awareness, and inner connection. Participants are guided through supportive, low-impact experiences that nurture the mind, body, and spirit Participants will explore chair-based yoga, breathwork, rotating styles of meditation (gratitude, letting go, body awareness, guided imagery, and contentment), sound baths using vibrational instruments, creative mandala art, tactile engagement with sound tools, and reflective community discussions. From resonant sound baths to interactive instrument play, mandala and stone art to affirmations, each session invites joyful discovery while remaining safe, inclusive, and engaging for aging bodies and minds Whether exploring gratitude through movement, releasing stress through sound, or connecting with others in shared reflection, this program fosters holistic well-being in a safe, soothing, and uplifting environment.

Tanvi Patil is a holistic wellness educator, yogi and sound healing practitioner, and founder of Soukhyam Yoga With over a decade of experience rooted in both ancient yogic traditions and modern healthcare, Tanvi offers a multidimensional approach to mindfulness, movement, and healing. Her work draws on her background as a classically trained dancer, cardiology pharmacist, and lifelong student of integrative wellness Raised in India and immersed in the healing wisdom of Ayurveda and nature-based practices, Tanvi blends breathwork, sound therapy, guided meditation, and creative expression to support emotional well-being and cognitive vitality especially in aging populations. Her approach is gentle, inclusive, and deeply sensory, inviting participants to reconnect with stillness, joy, and self-awareness through accessible, enriching experiences Through programs like Awaken & Align, she weaves together movement, vibrational sound baths, visual arts, and storytelling to engage the senses and foster social connection, purpose, and resilience in seniors. Tanvi’s work is both heartcentered and evidence-informed, offering a space where participants can explore presence, creativity, and community.

Roanoke is more than just a railroad town or the home of the iconic Mill Mountain Star it’s a community shaped by complex histories, diverse cultures, and powerful stories often left untold In this dynamic public history series, Roanoke in Context: Community, Culture, and Hidden Histories, we invite you to take a closer look at the people, places, and events that have defined the Star City over time.

Designed for lifelong learners, community members, and history enthusiasts alike, this series brings together local historians, storytellers, and residents to shed light on the hidden threads that weave Roanoke’s story together Whether you're a longtime resident or a newcomer to the region, this course offers an enriching opportunity to connect with the city’s heritage, challenge assumptions, and celebrate the resilience and contributions of its communities.

Patricia" Trish" White-Boyd is a graduate of Averett University, Owner and Director of Blue Ridge Senior Services, and this coming year, she will celebrate 21 years as a small business owner. She is also a Certified Senior Advisor. She was appointed to Roanoke City Council in January of 2019 and was elected as Vice Mayor in November 2020

HISTORY

The Wisdom Series

June 9 & 23, July 14 & 28, August 11 & 25 at 1:30 PM

In this six-part series, you'll hear heartfelt interviews with six Roanoke residents who share the wisdom they've gained through decades of life experience. From stories of the Great Depression and World War II to reflections on love, resilience, and coping with loss, each conversation offers powerful insights and timeless advice. These deeply personal narratives highlight the strength of the human spirit and provide meaningful takeaways for listeners of all ages Whether you're looking for inspiration, perspective, or connection, you'll find a nugget of wisdom in every story.

Serving as president of Hollins University from January 2005 through June 2017, and then as interim president in 2019-2020, Nancy Oliver Gray brought to the university a strong belief in the liberal arts and sciences and the need for women’s colleges in higher education. Under her leadership, Hollins implemented two five-year strategic plans, eliminated all debt, and doubled the endowment. She guided the university through a $150 million comprehensive fundraising campaign, raising over $161 million at its conclusion in 2010 and over $300 million during her tenure Earlier in her career, Nancy served as president of Converse College for five years and as vice president for advancement at Rider University and Princeton Theological Seminary.

Following her retirement from Hollins, Nancy completed studies at Union Presbyterian Seminary and became a part-time Parish Associate for Visitation at Second Presbyterian Church. This spring, the church completed a series of six videos, entitled the Wisdom Series, in which senior members of the congregation share their stories about their life experiences and the wisdom they have gained. Their stories are certain to amuse, inform and inspire you. Nancy is delighted to share this series with Woodland Hills residents who are members of Second Presbyterian Church and other interested residents Everyone is welcome!

The class will delve into real-world examples, explore how these scams operate, and highlight the warning signs that can help protect individuals and families. Attendees will also gain practical tips on how to report suspicious activity and safeguard personal and financial information Whether you're a senior, a caregiver, or a healthcare professional, this session provides essential knowledge to help prevent fraud and promote a more secure healthcare environment

Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams”. In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams. In addition to being an author and speaker, Shawn is a life coach, ordained minister, and the father of two young men, Shawn & Vaughn Shawn resides in Richmond, VA

Mill Mountain Zoo Encounters

Mill Mountain Zoo is located within Mill Mountain Park, a beautiful 568acre regional park which is maintained by Roanoke Parks and Recreation. Located at the top of Mill Mountain just off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the zoo overlooks the city of Roanoke and the surrounding mountain vistas The zoo was founded in 1952 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit operated by the Blue Ridge Zoological Society Our mission at the Mill Mountain Zoo is to promote an appreciation and understanding of wildlife and habitat preservation through the use of quality exhibits and educational programs, and to work in cooperation with other animal conservation programs.

Then, on Thursday, July 10th, experience Fate Knocks: Beethoven, where Urban examines how Beethoven forever changed the world of music, despite being deaf. Finally, on Thursday, August 14th, don’t miss With A Little Help From My Friends, as Urban takes you back to 1831 Paris, where a young Chopin joins an all-star musical cast that left an indelible mark on history

These sessions offer an engaging blend of music history, storytelling, and insight into the lives of these legendary composers.

Josh Urban is a speaker, musician, disc jockey, and musicologist. He's hosted radio and podcast programs, played and taught guitar professionally for nearly twenty years, and is an enthusiastic collector of recordings from around the world

Let's Look at Photography

June 16 & July 21 at 1:30 PM

Explore the fascinating evolution of photography in this two-part lifelong learning series that blends art history with hands-on creativity In the first session (6/16), we’ll take a visual journey through the history of photography from its 19th-century origins to the influential photographers and artistic movements that shaped how we see the world today. Learn how photography evolved as both a documentary tool and a form of artistic expression.

Then, on 7/21, put that knowledge into practice with a hands-on cyanotype workshop This early photographic process, known for its distinctive blue tone, uses sunlight and treated paper to create striking, one-of-a-kind images. Participants will create their own cyanotype prints using natural objects and light no camera needed! Whether you're a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or someone looking to try something new, this class offers a rewarding blend of education, inspiration, and creativity

Janean Williams is a visual artist, curator, and educator with a passion for connecting communities through art and culture She holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in International Studies, summa cum laude, from Hollins University. Her work has been exhibited in the U.S. and Europe, with shows at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco, the Biennial of Neglected Life Forms in Munich, and the University of Missouri’s Serial Box Projects She was also Creator in Residence at Florence Studio, OCAD University in Italy.
