September – National Assisted Living Week: Join us as we celebrate this special week honoring the vibrant lives of our residents Expect a variety of themed events, social gatherings, and opportunities to share stories that highlight the spirit of community
October – Sports History Film Festival: Step back in time through the lens of sports history. We’ll feature classic films and documentaries that showcase legendary athletes, pivotal moments, and the cultural impact of sports throughout history
November – Día de los Muertos Sugar Skull Decorating Workshop: Celebrate the traditions of Día de los Muertos with a hands-on workshop where participants can design and decorate sugar skulls. This colorful cultural experience honors heritage, remembrance, and creativity.

FINE ARTS
The Unique Art Movement of Pointillism

Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. George Seurat and Paul Signac developed this technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. We will have a brief overview on the movement, it's artists and work We will then create a unique and colorful painting using the technique of applying small dots of color to make our painting
Hilma AF Klint

Hilma AF Klint: a Swedish artist whose paintings are considered among the first major abstract works in Western art history Hilma Klint is a largely unknown Swedish artist who was a pioneer in abstract art, She created some of the earliest known paintings in an abstract style. Her work focused on spiritual concepts and mystical ideas. Her style was very distinct with geometric patterns. We will discuss this interesting artist as well as look at a variety of her paintings. Our painting will be influenced by her distinct style.
Art and the Brain

Engaging with art stimulates various brain regions, enhances cognitive functions, and can promote emotional well-being. The benefits of creating art are numerous and influence the practice of art therapy. We will have an overview of how art affects us both physically and emotionally. Our painting will be an expressive painting focused on mindfulness.

Emily Basto received an MS in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2009. She has her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Her interest in other cultures and customs influences many of her art projects. She currently works with older adults and really enjoys this community in various settings. Emily hopes to continue to promote art therapy services and highlight the many benefits

Heidi Ordaz has guided personal expression through art with a full range of ages and backgrounds Having experienced the benefits of art herself, Mrs Ordaz enjoys interacting with others as they create, to reveal their unique voice in the world Artists can immerse into an art experience by using traditional or experimental hands-on techniques including painting, clay, hand-press printmaking, mixed media or crafts.

Virginia Living Museum

Learning can be a life-long adventure. Join Virginia Living Museum staff biologists, naturalists and scientists to explore the natural world in special adult-oriented programs. Each activity-oriented program is presented in a relaxed, hands-on format and includes classroom instruction combined with opportunities to examine specimens from the Museum’s extensive collections and up close encounters with live animals Come and share a journey of discovery with others who have an enthusiastic desire to continue to learn about the natural world of Virginia and beyond.

The Virginia Living Museum's mission is "connecting people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation". This means they aim to inspire knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the natural world and its connection to the environment, ultimately encouraging conservation efforts. They achieve this through various exhibits, programs, and initiatives

HISTORY
Exploring the History of Hampton Roads

Join historian and museum director Robert Kelly as he brings the past to life with fascinating stories from Hampton Roads’ rich history. Each month offers a new topic of discovery from the lives of the region’s Native Americans to pivotal moments in the American Revolution and Civil War, along with other captivating chapters that shaped our local heritage Come for the history, stay for the stories that connect our community to the larger American experience

Robert Kelly is a graduate of Old Dominion University, where he received his Bachelor of History in 2009. While studying at ODU, Robert focused on Civil War, Virginia, and Maritime History In January 2020, Robert was named Gloucester County’s Museums Coordinator and is responsible for the management of the Gloucester Museum of History.

World Alzheimers Day

This class raises awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, exploring its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Participants will learn about current research, risk factors, and ways lifestyle choices can support brain health. The session encourages open discussion and shared experiences, fostering knowledge, connection, and empowerment
Aging & Sarcopenia- Move it or Loose it

Sarcopenia, or age-related muscle loss, is a common but often overlooked part of aging. In this class, participants will discover how strength, balance, and movement can slow its progression and improve quality of life Practical strategies and exercises will be discussed, offering tools to stay active, strong, and independent
Osteoporosis

This class explores osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures as we age Participants will gain a clear understanding of risk factors, prevention, and treatment options. The discussion will also highlight everyday strategies to protect bone health and maintain mobility and independence.
