Welcome to the #NotYourAverageSummerSchool at RUI University! As we step into the vibrant season of summer, we are excited to offer a range of interactive classes and engaging monthly events that will make this summer one to remember This summer, RUI University is focused on blending fun, learning, and community connection. This summer, we’re offering:

Interactive Summer Classes: Dive into unique, hands-on courses that blend education with creativity. From culinary classes to outdoor fitness challenges, these interactive sessions are designed to ignite your passion for learning while fostering a sense of community

Monthly Events to Look Forward To:

June - Juneteenth Outing: Join us as we celebrate Juneteenth with a special outing to a local Black-owned restaurant. This is an opportunity to experience the culture, history, and delicious flavors that shape our shared heritage

July - History of Ice Cream: Cool off this summer with a deliciously sweet history lesson on the origins of ice cream. Taste different varieties, learn about its cultural significance, and explore the evolution of everyone’s favorite summer treat!

Living with Parkinson’s: Insight, Advocacy & Education

With over 50 years of personal and caregiving experience, this class offers a rare and deeply informed perspective on Parkinson’s Disease. Led by someone who has the disease, is gene positive, and has cared for multiple loved ones affected by it, this session will cover crucial topics including early signs of Parkinson’s, hospital safety for patients, and the latest on the PD Gene Project Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive, open forum Whether you're newly diagnosed, a caregiver, or simply want to understand more, this class provides knowledge, compassion, and real-world insights you won’t find in a textbook.

With over 50 years of lived and caregiving experience with Parkinson’s disease, Howard brings a deeply personal and informed perspective to the conversation. His journey has shaped a lifelong commitment to Parkinson’s education and advocacy. As a speaker, Howard focuses on critical topics such as hospital safety for people with Parkinson’s, the importance of genetic research including the PD Gene project, and recognizing the early signs of the disease His goal is to empower individuals and families with knowledge, promote proactive healthcare practices, and answer the questions that matter most to those affected by Parkinson’s.

In this informative session, Angela will guide participants through essential topics related to estate planning, including how to prepare for retirement, protect assets, and ensure your wishes are honored She will also discuss strategies for qualifying for Medicaid and Veterans Administration benefits to help pay for long-term care. Learn how to make your money last, plan for future needs, and potentially leave an inheritance for your loved ones. This class is designed to help you navigate complex decisions with confidence and clarity. Angela has practiced for nearly two decades and focuses her firm’s efforts on estate planning and helping families obtain Medicaid and Veterans Administration benefits to pay for long-term care. Angela dedicates her time, energy and legal expertise to helping you and your loved ones prepare to retire and live comfortably, and to helping make your money last to pay for care and possibly leaving an inheritance for your children. Angela tells all of our families: “Getting older is a team sport.” And she would love to be on your family’s team to help you work through these difficult times.

Fort Monroe & Old Point Comfort

Step back in time and explore the rich history of Fort Monroe and Old Point Comfort, two of the most storied landmarks in Hampton Roads. This class will uncover the area's strategic military significance, its role in early American coastal defense, and its powerful legacy as the site of the first landing of enslaved Africans in English North America Learn how Fort Monroe became known as "Freedom’s Fortress" during the Civil War and how Old Point Comfort evolved into a cultural and historical crossroads. A must-attend for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in the complex and compelling story of Virginia's coast.

Robert Kelly is a graduate of Old Dominion University, where he received his Bachelor of History in 2009. While studying at ODU, Robert focused on Civil War, Virginia, and Maritime History. In January 2020, Robert was named Gloucester County’s Museums Coordinator and is responsible for the management of the Gloucester Museum of History

African American Medal of Honor Recipients and the Integration of the US Navy

At the outbreak of the American Civil War Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles needed sailors to carry out his blockade of the South. Though already long integrated, Welles eliminated the long established quota system for sailors by race, enabling African Americans to become one-in-six of American Naval personnel. Eight of these men were awarded the Medal of Honor for dramatic heroism in battle

Attendees will also gain practical tips on how to report suspicious activity and safeguard personal and financial information Whether you're a senior, a caregiver, or a healthcare professional, this session provides essential knowledge to help prevent fraud and promote a more secure healthcare environment

Shawn Smith is the State Director of the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol program. He leads a team of over 100 paid and volunteer staff that educate seniors on fraud prevention. Shawn is also the author of “101 Fraud Tips”, a guide to help seniors protect their money and identify from scammers His presentation will be about "Avoiding Common Healthcare Scams”. In it, he will cover the most common types of scams affecting seniors and he will share ways to prevent, detect, and report those scams. In addition to being an author and speaker, Shawn is a life coach, ordained minister, and the father of two young men, Shawn & Vaughn Shawn resides in Richmond, VA

Get up close and personal with eight amazing ambassador reptiles in this hands-on, educational program presented by OBX Lizard Land! From tiny geckos to larger lizards and snakes, you’ll meet a variety of fascinating creatures while learning about their habitats, behaviors, and the vital role they play in the ecosystem. Perfect for all ages, this engaging experience is designed to inform, inspire, and maybe even help you overcome a few fears along the way!

OBX Lizard Lands vision is to share our love and appreciation for reptiles with the world with a focus on the conservation of wild populations and the responsible keeping and breeding of captive species

Dimensional Arts

We will have an overview of varieties of 3-D art Some historical information will be provided and how this art form has progressed The slideshow will provide examples of the many varieties of 3-D art and crafts: sculpture, textiles, assemblages, beading, crafts, installations, etc. Some artists will be discussed and examples of their work provided. We will briefly go over the art of drawing and painting to make images appear threedimensional. Our art project will be assembling a variety of materials together to create unique 3-dimensional mixed media pieces

Mexican Folk Art

There have been many craftspeople in indigenous Mexican culture with no formal art training. These people have made various beautiful and useful art forms in the context of tradition, culture and national identity. The 20th century saw a great rise in these handicrafts which became economically valuable We will explore many varieties and styles of folk art in Mexico We will create a colorful Mexican landscape in the folk art style

Art of The Sea

The art of the sea, or maritime art, has a long and varied history, encompassing diverse forms from early rock carvings to modern photography The sea has been a powerful source of inspiration for artists From ancient depictions of boats to detailed seascapes and maritime battles, the sea has been a recurring motif in art. We will also explore images of sea life and all the amazing creatures of the sea. We will have an option of colorful jellyfish or sea horse paintings.

Emily Basto received an MS in Art Therapy from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2009. She has her undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology. Her interest in other cultures and customs influences many of her art projects. She currently works with older adults and really enjoys this community in various settings. Emily hopes to continue to promote art therapy services and highlight the many benefits

Drum with JUJU

Join Juju for an energizing drumming class that’s all about rhythm, expression, and connection In this interactive session, residents will explore the basics of hand drumming, learn traditional patterns, and experience the joy of making music together No prior experience is needed just a willingness to have fun and feel the beat. Drumming with Juju is more than a class; it’s a celebration of culture, creativity, and community.

Gary L. Garlic aka “Ju Ju”, born Dec. 21, 1970 in Washington, DC is a musician, bandleader, percussion instructor, band director, author, and entrepreneur As a young percussionist, Ju Ju came to Hampton Roads in 1988 as a music education major at Norfolk State University. After leaving college to pursue a career in music, he has had the privilege of performing for a living since 1994 when he was hired as a drummer at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. From there, Ju Ju played cruise ships, and toured He has shared the stage with some very good company, including the Temptations, Chris Vadala (from Chuck Mangione), Najee, gospel legend Albertina Walker, and currently Donna Summer.

Ju Ju plays drums, bass, vibraphone, latin percussion, steel drum, and will soon be a heck of a spoon player! As a teacher, Ju Ju directs 2 bands, 2 percussion ensembles, 2 drumlines, and a large number of private students

As a businessman, Ju Ju is proprietor of Ju Ju Drum Entertainment, founded in 2002. Ju Ju’s plan is to continue to “provide premium entertainment”
