Welcome to our January issue... So friends, onwards into 2016 – resolutions have no doubt been made and hopefully, we’re still sticking to them (well it is only January!) Whatever you choose to do this year, do it enthusiastically and with a smile on your face – no matter how you’re feeling. Yes, I am probably talking to those of us who are trying to give something up again but look at it from another perspective. It’s all about change and embracing new beginnings. Try to keep a positive outlook and know we’re behind you all the way. The New Year looks set to be another interesting one for us, with lots going on behind the scenes in and out of Around Magazines. We are set to embrace changes and are excited to move forward with our personal and business plans. Firstly though, a final mention of some fantastic achievements in 2015 for the benefit of those who missed out on our magazine in December. Friends of Around Rugby had much to celebrate and it is appropriate to acknowledge them again this month. Brownsover Community School grabbed celebrity status after being invited to perform their fabulous Haka in front of a number of groups of dignitaries and won top prizes for their vegetables at the summer fete in Newton. Robert Low and The Hamplified team pulled off a fantastic series of events in aid of The Matt Hampson Foundation (The Hamplified Rugby 7’s and Music Festival was a resounding success as was their hilarious and well supported Comedy Night in the Fanzone); the retail outlets of the town showcased their wares at their Fashion and Lifestyle Show and of course the gorgeous Rugbeards returned this year to help raise funds for The Matt Hampson Foundation and Hope4 and continue to put a smile on our faces. How could you say no to supporting a cause championed by a guy with flowers, poppies or baubles in his beard (not to mention the fairy lights)?

First Thursdays, Rugby in Bloom, the Food & Drink Festival, the Festival of Culture, the Festival of Rugby and all the unmentioned activities that took place in 2015 around the town and in the Fanzone helped us to reignite our community spirit. Well done and thank you to all those involved in the organising, manning and support of all of the events in Rugby last year, including our lovely Mayor, Cllr Richard Dodd. Along with the frenzy of activity in and around the Town Centre, Rugby is now able to enjoy the new shopping opportunities on Elliott’s Field and Technology Drive. A huge variety of retail and food outlets are now available to us and will hopefully provide us with the desire to shop and socialise within Rugby rather than travel out of town so often. To start 2016 we have a great competition from Cineworld Rugby. They are offering a family ticket usable at any Cineworld location for the correct answer to a Star Wars themed question. The winner of the November competition was Dianne Hughes who won a month’s free membership to Feisty Fitness for correctly choosing High Impact Interval Training for the initials H.I.I.T. The winner of the Capture Corner competition was Bradley Gulliver (aged 13). Bradley won a £10.00 voucher and had his photograph ‘Beautiful in Bloom’ featured in the December edition of Around Rugby. Finally, season’s greetings to all our past, current and future advertisers, friends and associates who missed it last month. We hope you had a very merry Christmas and wish you a successful New Year in whatever you choose to do.

Young Enterprise in Rugby On Thursday 12 November, Rugby Young Enterprise groups took part in a ‘Dragons’ Den’. The event was organised and funded by Rugby Round Table, and was held at La Casa Loco. This year, the students benefited from the wisdom of four Dragons: • Brett Salisbury from Handelsbanken • John Tarrant, a Chartered Accountant with Davy Capital • Shirley Gale, Founder and Owner of La Casa Loco • Malcom Freeman, Owner of Oxygen Graphics. All five Young Enterprise groups pitched their ideas to the Dragons, in the hope of getting a share of the £300 investment funds that were up for grabs. The feedback from the Dragons this year, was that all teams presented confidently and the Dragons were very impressed by the range of ideas developed. The five Young Enterprise teams pitching their ideas, in the hope of winning additional funding were: BURNING DESIRE whose idea is to make and sell laser engraved wooden products RENEW want to develop a range of products using recycled sources, initially focussing on the production of wrapping paper printed with designs from local artists

TEAM ASPIRE are looking to sell their branded Evoke Scented Pillows URBAN REVAMP whose range of products will be based around recycled/ revamped materials, including bicycle chain keyrings, glitter jars, jampot candles and vinyl record bowls. Following much deliberation, the Dragons selected their chosen winners. They felt that two companies had presented a business case that they would support: Urban Revamp who were awarded £200 of investment funding, and Team Aspire who walked away with investment funding of £100. Many thanks to all the students who took part, and to the Business Advisors for their support. Huge thanks to the Dragons for enabling this to happen, and to Alistair George from George & Co and Rugby Round Table for organising and funding the event. Look out at the local Christmas Fairs for the Young Enterprise teams, who may well be there selling their wares! If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise, the teams, or being an Advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on 01788 579456.

Supporting local charities

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you’d prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Got spare capacity – here’s a fresh way to monetize it

M

ost businesses have spare capacity from time to time. Hotels have unsold rooms, cinemas have empty seats, shops have unsold stock and consultants have unsold periods of time – I’m sure you get the idea. In an ideal world, your business would be working at 100% capacity 100% of the time but that rarely happens in reality So what can you do about it? Option one - do nothing. You could just accept that such periods are inevitable, effectively writing off the potential value of that unsold capacity. Option two – offer discounts to monetize your spare capacity for normal currency. Many businesses rely on special offers and last minute deals to move spare capacity. The problem is that it inevitably means devaluing your product or service. The more you discount, the more your customers expect a discount, and it can drive your overall margins down, in the long run. Option three – exchange your spare capacity for other goods or services through barter. Bartering is an age-old process, but it suffers from the fundamental problem of establishing a fair rate of exchange. Option four – Monetize your unused capacity using a complimentary currency. Many business owners are not even aware that there are many, legitimate, alternative currencies

available in the UK. These complementary currencies are designed to help people release more value from their spare capacity. Some, like the Bristol Pound, have a geographical limitation while others e.g. BBX (Business Bank Exchange), operate internationally.

What are the benefits of using a complementary currency in this way? 1)Because they facilitate the exchange of goods and services within a less competitive environment, complementary currencies allow it’s users to realise a higher value for their spare capacity. 2)They allow diverse business types to exchange goods and services that would otherwise be impossible via a traditional bartering approach. 3)Businesses can effectively purchase goods and services from other users at a discount equivalent to their gross profit margin.

Frequently asked questions Are complementary currencies legal? – Yes How are they treated for accounting & taxation purposes? – These complimentary currencies are normally accounted for, and taxed in the same way as cash. There are currently more than 400 complementary currency schemes operating in the UK with the approval of HMRC. In summary If you are currently struggl ing to monetize your spare capacity, join the tho usands of other businesses who have alre ady discovered the many benefits of a comple mentary currency.

games or scattering food to increase the time it takes to eat, as well as burning calories. And remember – those daily treats also contribute towards your pet’s calorie intake, so cutting these out or slightly reducing your pets daily diet can help shed the pounds.

Around 50% of pets are overweight, but 80% of people think their dog is the correct weight. And it’s not just dogs that are battling the bulge – cats and rabbits can easily put on unnecessary weight too. Small treats here and there and a lack of exercise can easily add up to an overweight pet.

As with humans, exercise is really important for pets. Most dogs require two 30 minute walks per day, but only 31% of dogs currently get this. Swimming is also great exercise for dogs, if your pooch is a water-lover! Cats should have four ten-minute exercise sessions a day, and rabbits should have four hours out of their hutch on a daily basis.

Changing your pet’s diet can have a huge effect on their weight and quality of life - a dog at healthy weight can add up to two years to its life expectancy. You’ll also notice an improved skin and coat, smaller and firmer stools, and even a rise in their energy levels.

To get you started, why not book your pet into a free nutrition consultation at your local Pets at Home Rugby store or visiting www. petsathome.com/nutritionconsultations

There’s so much to discover! with Brian Grealy: 07583 454524 www.rugbyramblers.org.uk Walks do not just happen – they are planned and pre-walked weeks in advance, sometimes on more than one occasion. Through the course of the late autumn and winter the weather has a bearing on attendance of these walks. To walk or not to walk, that is the question when the weather turns iffy. Do we really get the same enjoyment when walking in adverse weather conditions? Alternatively, what is the point of purchasing the appropriate weatherproof clothing if we are not prepared to use it? On a recent circular walk commencing from Mount St Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire the weather was decidedly glum and unwelcoming; waterproofs were duly donned affording snug protection against the wind and the rain.

rain had reduced to that of a mizzle. The view was somewhat obscured by the sky’s brooding greyness beyond which could be seen the advancement of the suns rays behind the cloudbank. Predictions were made that the walk would be concluding in the warmth of autumn sunshine. Well, it wasn’t quite that warm, but as the return journey was made back to the abbey it was a fabulous way to conclude such a beautiful walk in such contrasting conditions. Whilst walking in adverse weather conditions can be a little bit foreboding, with the appropriate clothing and indeed the right footwear, there is no reason why you may not gain as much enjoyment from a walk in the rain as you would enjoy a walk in something a little less challenging.

During both November and December The walk leader led a group of ramblers a total of 18 different “rambles” were through a myriad of lanes and paths offered and undertaken by members following a well-trodden path through of Rugby ramblers embracing the Bardon deer park toward the summit of seasonal conditions. Despite there being a huge variety of great walking opportunities, both in the local countryside and further afield, not everyone feels confident about going out on their own and would maybe prefer to walk in good company and enjoy the shared experience.

Walking with Rugby Ramblers enables you to go on walks that will be in different areas both locally and further afield. We organise over a hundred walks a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths , destinations, 09:00 weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking Wednesday, 29 July 19:30 not only suits retired people but also Harborough Magna shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages. The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often, making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside.

We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths we were all able to enjoy our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea shop for cream tea.

If you are interested in walking with us please visit our website www.rugbyramblers.org.uk e-mail ask@rugbyramblers.org.uk or phone Fran (01788) 815 484

The Town playing squad has gone through an almost total transformation over 2015, with dependable defender Mason Rowley the only survivor from the start of the year. Belford has been quick to utilise his footballing contacts to bring in a number of new faces in his three and a half months in charge, with ex-Coventry City and Northampton midfielder Kevin Thornton the most recognisable of the arrivals.

Rugby have two particularly crucial games in January, with both of the teams currently in the relegation zone – Loughborough Dynamo and Tividale – due to visit Butlin Road. The inaugural meeting of the Rugby Town Supporters’ Club was held recently. The event was well-attended, and the group asserted their aim to help generate additional income to help the club secure a position in the next tier of the non-league pyramid. Any supporter wishing to become involved should contact either Lee Connop (via The Valley! Facebook page), Neil Gurney (neil@revolutiondrivers. com) or Tom Crinigan (on 07865 094814).
