Welcome to March! Can you believe we’re here already? The sun is shining and crocuses and daffodils are in bloom all around the town and no doubt we’re all feeling a little brighter following the gloom of winter. It’s actually quite pleasant as I look out of the office window on this Monday morning (in February) so apologies if you’re two feet deep in snow or have been blown around by gale force winds and driving rain. There are lots of new things to look at in this month’s magazine including a Wedding Feature highlighting some fresh choices in the area. So if you’re planning to get hitched, or if you’ve proposed on February 29th and need to bring your guy back down to earth gently, have a look through our pages. Competition winners for January! Congratulations to Ryan Dunn who won two tickets to a home league game in the Rugby Town FC competition

by choosing b) 9 as the total number of keepers to feature for Town this season. Also congratulations to Jonathon Prestidge who won a pair of tickets to any Cineworld movie at any location by correctly choosing b) Chewbacca as Han Solo’s sidekick in the Star Wars films. This month’s competitions have been sponsored by Rugby Town FC and Thornton’s Cycle Centre. Lastly, remember to treat your mums kindly on Mother’s Day (and every other day). Expensive presents are lovely but not always necessary; loving words and a cuddle is often all that’s required. Finally, don’t overdose on chocolate at Easter – take it slowly!

Fellow Velo Cycle... Friendly... France.

Fellow Velo is a small, developing and independent cycling touring holiday company based in Rugby. It was born out of a passion for pedalling and a love affair with France and aims to make French cycling holiday easy, memorable and enormous fun. Between us, we have worked and played in France for years and have cycled thousands of miles from top to bottom. We both had some valuable working experience in the leisure and recreation fields, but neither of us had set up or run a small business. We didn’t want for enthusiasm but, we were very conscious that we would need to expand our skills and seek the support of other individuals and organisations to help build our first business together.

You can find out all about Fellow Velo at www.fellowvelo.com Talk to us by calling 07811 285021 or 01788 568371 Contact us by email info@fellowvelo.com Like Fellow Velo on Facebook www.facebook.com/fellowvelo Follow us on Twitter @fellowvelo Support programme in conjunction with Rugby Borough Council. If you’re thinking of starting a business please call Wendy Brown on: 02476 654321.”

One of the early links we made was with our local Chamber of Commerce who have been a great help in a number of ways; • as a thoughtful mentor • a responsive ‘sounding board’ • a confidence builder and sustainer and • a plugger of our knowledge gaps All this being offered in a personal and engaging way; it means that you feel that there’s a business friend on hand who is eager to help you on your way (even if that’s across the water to France). Despite so much of our business delivery being in France, we were keen from the beginning to be a local small business that supported other local businesses. Our fleet bicycles, website design, vehicle livery, printing and other marketing materials have all come from businesses in Rugby and that approach is something we aim for whenever we can.

Microchipping - Simple, Painless and Essential From April it will become compulsory for all dogs in England and Wales to be microchipped.

Microchipping is an important part of responsible pet ownership and having a microchipped pet is the most effective way of increasing the chances of your pet being safely returned to you if it’s lost. The team here at Rugby are experts in microchipping and the process is simple, relatively painless and essential. Having the quick procedure performed on your dog or cat will offer peace of mind if they do go walkabout. Your cat or dog won’t be scarred from the procedure either as the chip is about the same size as a grain of rice. Should the worst happen and you and your pet become separated, the chip contains a digital copy of your contact details and a unique code number allocated to your pet only. The information on the chip is uploaded to a national database called Petlog where the owner

can be traced to the pet or vice versa. One thing to note however, is if you move house or your information changes, it is your responsibility to update your Petlog account, so don’t forget! For the peace of mind and guarantee of your beloved pets safety, why not book your pet in for a microchipping (if you haven’t already) at our Rugby store. Our specially trained colleagues will ensure your pet is microchipped safely and professionally in only a few minutes.

Matt Robinson, owner of award-winning Mister Robinson’s Barbershop of Church Street Rugby, took to the idea straight away and welcomed the opportunity to offer his customers something different on Valentine’s weekend and customers were able to choose from a range of ready-to-go bouquets, single roses, and cards. Florist Lynsey started her business in January this year after an unexpected redundancy, which she decided to turn into an opportunity to follow her own creative dream. “It has been hard work getting my business up and running in just 6 weeks, but I was determined to launch in time for Valentine’s Day. International Recognition for Local Photographer Local Photographer Ani Evans has gained international recognition by winning a significant award with the Guild of Photographers. The Guild of Photographers is the highly regarded national photographic body whose members are dedicated to enhancing their skills in the art, craft and profession of photography. It runs an image of the month competition, and received around 10,000 entries during 2015. Each image is scored, and the scores from the year are then totalled to determine who wins one of the Guild’s Top 10 Photographer awards. This is clearly a very demanding year long process! Ani Evans was honoured to become a Top 10 Photographer of the Year in the Wedding genre for a second consecutive year (5th in 2014 and 4th in 2015) - a remarkable achievement when one considers the number and standard of the entries.

Ani’s Award was presented to her at the Guild’s Awards night at Crew Hall on 6th February 2016. Lesley Thirsk (Director of the Guild) said that she is “both proud and delighted that Ani Evans has achieved this recognition after 12 months of submitting the highest quality images. The Guild has very demanding standards when judging photographic competitions. The judging is undertaken by a panel of internationally recognised experts from a variety of photographic backgrounds, so Ani Evans quite rightly should be delighted with their extraordinary achievement”. Members of the Guild are committed to achieving the highest standards of professionalism and to a journey of continuing professional development. www.photoguild.co.uk www.anievansphotography.co.uk

Traditions for the bride

Wedding veil. The wedding veil hides the bride’s beauty and wards off evil spirits. Wedding flowers. Before the use of flowers in the bridal bouquet, women carried aromatic bunches of garlic, herbs, and grains to drive evil spirits away as they walked down the aisle. Over time, these were replaced with flowers, symbolizing fertility and everlasting love. Throwing the bouquet. The throwing of the wedding bouquet was introduced from America and it is said that whoever catches the bouquet will be next to be married. Wearing a white wedding dress. The white wedding dress as we recognise it today is a tradition started by Queen Victoria, who wore white to her own wedding to Albert of Saxe-Colburg in 1840. But white wedding gowns, worn as a token of the bride’s purity and innocence, were worn by royalty and the wealthy long before then. Being given away. Giving away the bride is an antiquated tradition from the days when women were their father’s property until they got married and became their husband’s property. The bride was literally given away in exchange for a bride price or dowry. Bridesmaids. The bridal party is a tradition that has been established for many centuries. For a long time the purpose of the bridal party was to fool evil spirits. The bride’s friends dressed similarly to her in order to confuse any virulent presences that might be lurking about. Today bridesmaids are there to support the bride in the stressful times during the wedding.

The essence of your pictures is Bernd’s passion!

Bernd Moore is an experienced and professional photographer based in Rugby, with a relaxed friendly approach specialising in stylish modern professional photography at popular Rugby locations and venues. For Bernd, capturing the essence of a picture is his passion. He always works with his clients to capture the image that they want, but will also be looking for those pictures that capture the shoot and give the memories that last. With weddings, Bernd has always felt this to be a complete day and that is why he offers to photograph the complete day from getting ready to the first dance. This allows him to capture all key events during the day from exchanging the rings to the speeches, the formal group shots to the informal shots of the Bride and Groom as well as their family and friends. His favourite

moment of any wedding is when the music starts, the doors open and the bride is just about to start walking down the isle. Bernd’s fascination with photography had early roots and after being asked to shoot a friends wedding he decided to enrol in the full wedding photography course with the Trained Eye where under the expert tuition of top Wedding Photographers Mike Gerrard and David Morgan he learned how to shoot Weddings from start to finish. His work has now featured in wedding magazines including Your Surrey Weddings, Starting Together and Stratford Living magazines. Bernd has experience in photographing all types of weddings including church, registry office, hindu, chinese, buddhist and asian weddings. Along with continually critiquing his own work, Bernd is also using the guidance of renowned portrait photographers Mark Cleghorn and Kenny Martin to learn and develop different techniques to add to his reportiore of styles. Moore Weddings and Portraits offer complete “all inclusive” packages, as well as a range of quality prints and products available for individual purchase.

There’s so much to discover! with Brian Grealy: 07583 454524 www.rugbyramblers.org.uk The mass trespass by 400 walkers on Kinder Scout in 1932 is recognised as the iconic event in the history of walking in this country.

The subsequent arrest and imprisonment of five of the trespassers for terms of between two and six months lead to a huge wave of public sympathy with 10,000 ramblers – the largest gathering in rambler history; assembling for another mass trespass at Winnats Pass in Derbyshire just a few weeks later. Successive Enclosure Acts during the 18th and 19th centuries had restricted access to what were initially large areas of common land into private ownership. The organised mass trespasses were the first steps in building momentum to re-gaining access to these and other lost land masses.

From this incident stemmed the majority of the public rights of access to the countryside that we all so enjoy today. It was the trigger for setting up the embryonic Ramblers’ Association which, over the years has campaigned for many of the things that, today, many of us take for granted: the right to walk on footpaths and bridleways without obstacles, the right to have access to open country and coastline, the right to have one’s voice heard when defending wild, open spaces Today the Ramblers Association has from inappropriate development. It is interesting, however, to learn that in excess of 100,000 associates, with many walkers at the time of the mass Rugby Ramblers (founded 1970) trespass were opposed to the action. contributing 315 members. The majority of walkers belonged to some of the loosely connected federations of ramblers that existed at the time and many felt that the action was a politically motivated act by some working-class activists with communist inspired tendencies.

Got spare capacity – here’s a fresh way to monetize it

M

ost businesses have spare capacity from time to time. Hotels have unsold rooms, cinemas have empty seats, shops have unsold stock and consultants have unsold periods of time – I’m sure you get the idea. In an ideal world, your business would be working at 100% capacity 100% of the time but that rarely happens in reality So what can you do about it? Option one - do nothing. You could just accept that such periods are inevitable, effectively writing off the potential value of that unsold capacity. Option two – offer discounts to monetize your spare capacity for normal currency. Many businesses rely on special offers and last minute deals to move spare capacity. The problem is that it inevitably means devaluing your product or service. The more you discount, the more your customers expect a discount, and it can drive your overall margins down, in the long run. Option three – exchange your spare capacity for other goods or services through barter. Bartering is an age-old process, but it suffers from the fundamental problem of establishing a fair rate of exchange. Option four – Monetize your unused capacity using a complimentary currency. Many business owners are not even aware that there are many, legitimate, alternative currencies

available in the UK. These complementary currencies are designed to help people release more value from their spare capacity. Some, like the Bristol Pound, have a geographical limitation while others e.g. BBX (Business Bank Exchange), operate internationally.

What are the benefits of using a complementary currency in this way? 1)Because they facilitate the exchange of goods and services within a less competitive environment, complementary currencies allow it’s users to realise a higher value for their spare capacity. 2)They allow diverse business types to exchange goods and services that would otherwise be impossible via a traditional bartering approach. 3)Businesses can effectively purchase goods and services from other users at a discount equivalent to their gross profit margin.

Frequently asked questions Are complementary currencies legal? – Yes How are they treated for accounting & taxation purposes? – These complimentary currencies are normally accounted for, and taxed in the same way as cash. There are currently more than 400 complementary currency schemes operating in the UK with the approval of HMRC. In summary If you are currently struggl ing to monetize your spare capacity, join the tho usands of other businesses who have alre ady discovered the many benefits of a comple mentary currency.
