Well, here we are in November again and looking towards the end of another year. We’ve had a busy time in Rugby with our Rugby World Cup and Enjoy Rugby Festival which brought a whole host of interesting activities for all ages and tastes. Congratulations to all those involved in the organising and running of the events within the Fanzone and around the town. Around Rugby attended several of them, meeting visitors from all over the world. We particularly enjoyed the Fashion & Lifestyle Show and The Comedy Night and Auction in aid of The Matt Hampson Foundation. (Congratulations again to Rob Low for his tireless input). I’m sure our visitors left with a very positive view of Rugby having enjoyed our facilities and friendliness.

fireworks on 5th and take note of the safety measures suggested by the Chief Fire Officers Association and those mentioned regarding pets listed in the October edition, which can be found at aroundmagazines.co.uk/magazine. Competition time - the sponsor of this month’s competition is Cawston Christmas Trees who are again offering a 7ft non-drop Nordmann Fir tree as a prize. The winner of the September competition was Karen Holman who correctly named b) William Webb Ellis as the person who first ran with the ball and created the game of rugby. Karen won two tickets to Sewa Fare with Ballet Nimba and two tickets to The ACM Gospel Choir performances making up part of the Enjoy Rugby Festival. The winner of the Hamplified Comedy Night tickets was Chris Heslop. Chris correctly named Matt Hampson’s autobiography as b) ENGAGE. Also, a big thank you to everyone who entered our Facebook competitions and those who won Rugby World Cup 2015 rugby shirts and rugby balls. Special thanks to Neil Sippitts and Marie McCauley who were particularly gracious.

Along with the frenzy of activity in the Town Centre, Rugby is also enjoying the new shopping opportunities on Elliott’s Field and Technology Drive with the opening of several more retail outlets and more to follow. There are mixed feelings about these areas, but on the whole, we have found a positive response to the selection of new shops and food outlets. It seems that our main concern is whether there will be provision for adequate parking facilities. Finally, I’d like to share news of a touching letter and We will have to wait and see. phone call I received recently. During September a Moving on and following the successes of Stoptober lovely couple, Julie and Jeff Hetherington organised last month, Around Rugby highlights another worthy a charity bazaar in aid of animal charities, as they do cause in November (or should I say, Movember?) every year. The event was originally in memory of their Movember has been the month when guys around good friend and helper Derek who had recently passed the world strive to inform and educate about men’s away. Unfortunately, Julie and Jeff lost their dog, Bella health through the Movember Foundation. In recent shortly before the event and so added her name to the years, women have also been encouraged to support memorial. Julie and Jeff raised over £350 at this event their men in some way and have become known as and donated over £100 to Birmingham Dogs Home Mo Sistas. Again this year Mo Sistas are asked to step where they had originally found Bella. Well done Julie up to the challenge alongside their Mo Bros. The focus and Jeff and thank you for contacting us! is MOVE! Check out page 23 for more information on the MOVE initiative and to sign up at Movember.com. Movember has us focusing on our men’s health but we mustn’t forget the dangers traditionally associated with November. Please remember to be safe with

Winter tips for cats by Phil Bevington, store manager at Pets at Home Rugby As the temperature drops we’re urging all cat owners to think about the welfare of their furry friends to keep them warm and safe this winter.

If your pet is generally spending time outside, another important thing to consider is treating them to an outdoor shelter for Christmas. The shelter should have cosy bedding which needs to be kept dry and warm in case your cat decides to take cover.

Supporting local charities

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you’d prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Move or mo. Save a bro. Join the movement this movember Movember, the month formerly known as ‘November’, launches its 2015 campaign to Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across the nation, encouraging men and women to sign up and grow a mo or commit to MOVE to raise awareness and funds for men’s health. As Mo Bros unite and clean shave on the 1st of the month, they become walking, talking billboards helping to generate awareness and raise vital funds as they wear Movember’s hairy ribbon, the moustache for 30 days. When it comes to their health, too many men don’t talk, don’t take action and die too young. The Movember Foundation wants to help men live happier, healthier, longer lives and invests in four key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Even though the Movember Foundation will always be all about the moustache, there is now more than one way to champion men’s health this month. MOVE is a new initiative encouraging Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to get physically active and make a commitment to improve their health while raising funds. The challenge is to MOVE every day of Movember – 30 MOVEs in 30 days. How you MOVE each day is up to you. Whether it’s a workout one day, walking 30 minutes to work the next, a game of ping pong or an epic bike ride, no MOVE is too big or small.

The good news is that moving on a regular basis can reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer by up to 50% and lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. It’s also one of the best ways to stay mentally healthy and one of the best treatments for mild to moderate depression. “This Movember, we want Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to think about mind, body and mo by challenging each other to grow or MOVE for 30 days.” says Sarah Coghlan, UK country director for Movember. “Being active is one of the best things you can do for your health, so the addition of MOVE makes it even easier to do something fun that’s good for you and men’s health. Just sign up at Movember.com.” The Movember Foundation spans the globe across 21 countries. Since inception, a global army of over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas have grown, or supported the growth of a moustache. To date more than £400 million has been raised globally and over 1000 men’s health projects have been funded. Men and women sign up at Movember.com to grow, give or MOVE for the 30 days of Movember.

Visit the official club website: www.rugbytownfc.com Town’s eventful 2015 F.A.Cup run has finally ended, after a Third Qualifying Round replay defeat against National League Brackley.

FIXTURES Chasetown Sat 7th Nov

With a potential winnable home tie in the Final Qualifying Round beckoning, and beyond that what would have been a place in the First Round Proper of the nation’s favourite sporting knockout competition for the first time in 22 years, Rugby’s higher level opposition just proved too strong in the end. With the distraction (albeit enjoyable) of cup glory now gone, Rugby’s primary focus returns back to the league, where Belford will be aiming to lift his side up the table after the poor start that sees them struggling near its foot.

Most cup disappointments come with associated ‘if only’ moments, and Dale Belford’s men certainly had more than their fair share of those over the Brackley tie as a whole. The Valley faithful will reflect that if only they could have held on for just one more minute in the original away game - which saw a stoppage time Brackley equaliser, alongside other key incidents that also failed to go their way – including a David Kolodynski strike against the crossbar whilst leading in the same game, and a missed Kolodynski penalty in the home replay.

Belford took over the Valley reins in the middle of September following the departure of previous manager Gary Mills, and he has been very active in terms of player acquisition so far, securing a number of new signings – including ex-Coventry City midfielder Kevin Thornton.

Raaj Gill Town’s new goalkeeper picked himself up from a blow to the head to immediately save a penalty in the F.A.Cup tie at Brackley, before going on to play in the replay wearing a protective face mask three days later with what was eventually confirmed as a fractured cheekbone.

For the chance to WIN 2 FREE TICKETS to one of Town’s home league games in December, simply answer the following question:

The club was sad to learn of the loss of two of its friends in October, with the passing of Roger Bridges and Paul Dobbins. Roger was a lifelong fan who followed the team both home and away, whilst Paul was a coach driver for Catteralls, and he regularly took the players and supporters to matches.
