Gosh, it’s October already and we’ll soon be looking towards Christmas. I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone; I think I completely missed the summer. There’s lots going on in Rugby this month. Our Rugby World Cup comes to a close at the end of October after a fabulous couple of months. We have certainly enjoyed September and all the great experiences that have been available to us. Well done to all involved in the organisation of activities and venues - you’re doing a great job! Do remember though, that lots of aspects of our festival continue. Sport aside, our town is already enjoying greater shopping opportunities with the opening of several Elliott’s Field retail outlets and looks forward to the final stages on this site and on Technology Drive. Sadly, as these new units fill on the outskirts, town centre spaces are vacated and there is much debate as to whether this is an inevitable outcome or not.

In this month’s edition of Around Rugby you’ll notice that I’ve included a couple of information items regarding pet safety and firework/bonfire safety in preparation for Bonfire Night on 5th November. Please take time to read these as they may make all the difference to your enjoyment of the festivities. Lots of the ‘human’ pointers are common sense to most of us but maybe we still need small reminders anyway and they are a great way of instilling safety procedures into the minds of our younger loved ones. If you have pets, the information supplied by Phil from Pets at Home is extremely important as our companions are often forgotten or we may do the wrong thing whilst trying to help them cope with the loud noises and disruption.

This month’s main competition is sponsored by Feisty Fitness on Mill Road, Rugby with a free month of unlimited classes up for grabs. Rugby Town FC continue to offer lucky winners two tickets to their home league games so don’t forget to enter their competition too. Winners of September’s competitions will be announced October brings fabulous autumnal sights and colours in the November edition. There’s so much to discover! with Frances Debonnaire: 01788 815484 www.rugbyramblers.co.uk All Ramblers are united by one thing; a love of walking. It is great to explore the outdoors on foot. With our programme of walks we find that we walk more because the walks are already recce’d for us by that particular leader.

The safest option is to go to an organised event on Bonfire Night as the majority of accidents happen at private parties. However, if you do have a get-together at home, make sure you follow the firework code - safety recommended by the Chief Fire Officer’s Association.

Firework Code: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Bonfire Safety Tips:

Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks Keep fireworks in a closed box Follow the instructions on each firework Light them at arm’s length, using a taper Stand well back Never go near a firework that has been lit Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them Always supervise children around fireworks Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves Never give sparklers to a child under five Keep pets indoors Don’t let off fireworks after 11pm

If you have a bonfire, follow these simple guidelines: • Warn your neighbours beforehand • Only burn dry material, do not burn wet or damp items, this causes more smoke • Check there are no cables (eg telephone wires) above the bonfire • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees • Don’t use petrol or paraffin to start the fire - it can get out of control quickly • Once the bonfire is lit, make sure you: • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby - in case of emergencies • Don’t leave the bonfire unattended • Keep children and pets away from the bonfire • Don’t throw any fireworks into the fire • Don’t burn aerosols, tyres, canisters or anything containing foam or paint - this could produce toxic fumes and some containers may explode, causing injury • Once the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting

Be safe - go to an organised event!

Young Enterprise in Rugby With the new academic year having started, we’re about to allocate students to groups and groups to Business Advisors, and then agree which local business premises the groups will meet at to have their weekly meetings. It’s a busy time!

We’d also like to thank the following organisations for allowing our groups to meet on their premises every week - something which really helps the students feel they’re having experience in business rather than an extra lesson at the end of the school day:

We’ll have students from Ashlawn, Avon Valley, Harris, Lawrence Sheriff and Rugby High, so it’ll be a good mix.

• • • • •

Rugby Young Enterprise is really lucky to have some new Business Advisors volunteering from the business community this year, along with some experienced Advisors to show them the ropes. We’d like to extend a big thank you to all of our Business Advisor volunteers: • • • • • • • • • •

Adam McHenry from Cadman Homes Carin Jackson from The Utility Warehouse Dhruv Naker from Steers Printing John Quinn from Quinn Roofing Kallum Bell from The Road Ahead Matt Ewer from Action Coach Paul Bromley from Brethertons Paul Rogers from Bottomley & Co Samantha Rollins from Trinity Accountants Stephen Gay - independent consultant

Asda Brethertons HSBC INTEC Morgan Sindall

Lastly, but by no means least in the thank yous, the Rugby Young Enterprise Board are pleased to welcome a couple of new Board members – Sheila Bell from Swann Systems and Amanda Avery from Around Magazines. New members are always welcome to inject new ideas and help the programme develop. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or getting involved, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on 01788 579456.

by Phil Bevington, store manager at Pets at Home Rugby Many pet owners will know all too well that fireworks season can be extremely distressing for their animals. Some pets will seek out their owners or hide; others might tremble, salivate, bark or whine. And it isn’t just stressful for indoor pets - those that live outside like rabbits and guinea pigs can also be fearful of fireworks.

And for outdoor pets, partly cover enclosures with blankets so that one area is sound-proofed, making sure there is plenty of ventilation and space to look out. Hiding places and extra bedding will also help them feel safe.

Despite there being a huge variety of great walking opportunities, both in the local countryside and further afield, not everyone feels confident about going out on their own and would maybe prefer to walk in good company and enjoy the shared experience.

Walking with Rugby Ramblers enables you to go on walks that will be in different areas both locally and further afield. We organise over a hundred walks a year graded to suit most abilities, together with a range of social activities. With the variety of walk lengths , destinations, weekday and weekend walking, we have so much to offer. The weekday walking not only suits retired people but also shift workers who maybe work some weekends. Our group is attractive to all ages.

The health benefits of walking are well documented and having a full programme of walks to choose from, you will certainly walk more often, making new friends and feel the benefit of walking in our beautiful countryside.

Start spreading the word…

We have two coach trips a year to areas where it would be too far for a days walking. In March this year we went to Ironbridge, Shropshire. With a choice of three walk lengths we were all able to enjoy our lovely walks and of course ended up in a tea shop for cream tea.

The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Sign up to Stoptober with friends, family and colleagues Research shows smokers are 67% more likely to quit if their partner also stops smoking and 36% more likely to quit if a friend stops. Smokers across the country are being urged to sign up to Stoptober, the country’s 28-day mass quit attempt from Public Health England (PHE), to receive support and encouragement every step of the way from some of the nation’s top comedians. And to stand an even better chance of quitting, they are encouraged to sign up with their friends, family and colleagues, as evidence reveals that this type of ‘social quitting’ can dramatically improve people’s chances of successfully stopping. Research shows that smokers are two-thirds (67%) more likely to quit when their spouse stops smoking, and a third more likely to quit when a close friend (36%) or someone they work with (34%) stops. The data also shows that individuals are much more likely (61%) to smoke if their partner or a close friend smokes, showing the powerful influence that people’s social networks have on their own smoking behaviour. This is backed up by a study of smokers in Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States which shows that the fewer smoking

friends someone has, the more likely they are to succeed in a quit attempt.

This year, Stoptober will be providing quitters with a personal touch from some of the nation’s leading comedians: Bill Bailey, Rhod Gilbert, Al Murray and Shappi Khorsandi. Messages of support and encouragement will be sent straight to quitters’ phones and emails throughout October. Over a quarter of a million people across the country signed up to Stoptober last year with more than half making it to 28 days. This year, it is expected the campaign will welcome the millionth sign up. By stopping smoking for 28 days you are 5 times more likely to stop for good. Supporting the campaign, Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “Smoking is still our biggest preventable killer: 80,000 people die a year in England because of smoking, and so stopping smoking is the single best thing a person can do for their health.” “We know quitting with a friend or family member can increase a person’s chances of stopping for good. Why not join the thousands of people all across the country who are quitting at the same time during Stoptober, maximising their chances of getting through 28 days smokefree.”

Visit the official club website: www.rugbytownfc.com It’s all change at the top again at Butlin Road following the resignation of Gary Mills, after a poor start to the league season saw just one victory from seven NPL outings.

Sun 4th Oct

Walsall

Mills leaves after just four months in the Valley hot-seat and is replaced by ex-Tamworth boss Dale Belford, who will once more be assisted by Steve Farmer - his right-hand man during a sixteen month spell in charge of the Lambs. Valley’s adventure in the nation’s favourite sporting knock-out competition has certainly been an eventful one prior to this.

Both Belford and Farmer played for Rugby previously in 1988 and 2005 respectively, and they bring to the club a wealth of non-league football experience and contacts.

Mills’ resignation came just 24 hours ahead of their excellent victory at higher level Ilkeston in the First Qualifying Round, whilst the rookie manager’s own plans had also been thrown up in the air late in the day, when then first choice keeper Scott Dutton refused to play in the Preliminary Round tie against Coventry Sphinx – meaning an emergency call-up for youth team goalie Ashley Bodycote

Ashley Bodycote Having stepped in at the eleventh hour to keep a clean sheet in Town’s F.A.Cup success over Coventry Sphinx, the teenage keeper returned again for another knockout triumph against the odds at Belper in the league cup competition.

Belford’s first game in charge saw a cruel defeat at Stocksbridge where the hosts snatched victory with a stoppage time goal, with another loss in his second at Market Drayton leaving Town just one place off bottom. Rugby were then due to host Lincoln United in the F.A.Cup on September 26th - looking for a place in the Third Qualifying Round for the second time in three years.
