Welcome to our February issue... The rain is lashing against my office window as I write this letter and I can see nothing but streams upon streams of water all falling over each other to reach the bottom. But hey, at least the recent snow has gone and it’s slightly warmer. Although, there are still remnants of drooping snowmen in front gardens, clinging on with steely determination. Maybe it’s not over and the cold of winter hasn’t really hit us – yet. There’s still plenty of time and I wouldn’t be surprised that as you read this there is snow on the ground or freezing frosts covering every outdoor surface. Last month was a particularly sad month too as, at the time of going to print, we have lost two great British performers in David Bowie and Alan Rickman and also Glenn Frey of legendary US rock band The Eagles. If you’re not into film/ theatre or music this might not be a big deal to you but those who are know what massive, massive losses these are to their respective industries. Having said that, it’s a new year and there’s a lot to look forward to. Later this year we can all marvel at the sporting prowess of not only our athletes, but those of other nations too as we enjoy the summer Olympic Games in Rio; France hosts the Euro 2016 Football Championships; a law comes into force stating that all dogs will must be micro-chipped and the Juno probe is due to reach Jupiter. Although we won’t be having a Hamplified Festival this year we do hope to celebrate the town with our own Festival of Culture and Food & Drink Festival again. Competitions galore! This month we are lucky enough to have no less than three competitions for you. Firstly, Thornton’s have a massive box of Continental chocolates up for grabs. If you

know your Thornton’s chocs you should be able to answer their question and if you don’t – why not call in and find out what’s in the boxes – they have sampling everyday throughout February. Remember you can always guess! Our second competition is sponsored by Rugby Town FC, a regular in the mag. They are again offering the chance to win two tickets to any home league game this season. Look out for their new separate competition entry. Last, but by no means least, we have a competition from Fortnum Sales. Fortnum have relocated to Rugby from Birmingham and are offering the chance to win a personalised mug and photo in a frame to celebrate. So if you fancy a mug with your favourite pet or a family member on along with a cool photo and frame, this one’s for you. Any of these prizes would make a lovely present – a great idea with Mothers Day and Easter coming up! The winner of the December competition was Paula Butler. She won a family ticket to see David Walliams’ GANGSTA GRANNY at The Belgrade on 16th February 2016. Paula correctly answered that David is a judge on the TV show c) Britain’s Got Talent. The January Capture Corner photo competition was won by Ruth Merrigan. Well done to you both. Well that’s about it this month. Enjoy flipping your pancakes and don’t forget to treat that special person in your life to something really nice. Remember it doesn’t cost anything to lavish attention on them.

BEAUTY TIPS Sunbeds offer a controlled way to tan and provide appropriate levels of UV to ensure sufficient levels of Vitamin D are achieved and maintained. Having the right eyebrow shape will open up the entire eye area, make you look younger and enable you to wear less make-up. Drier air takes away the thin layer of oil that helps keep moisture in the skin. Ensure to moisturise regularly in these winter months to prevent painful conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and severe dry skin.

My page advert has worked a treat! I have been advertising with Around Rugby for over six months now and I’ve recently upgraded to a full page, allowing me to showcase more of my hairdressing services. Being a new hairdresser in town, it’s really important for me to reach out to as many potential clients as possible. Your magazine offers an easy way for me to do that with great coverage across Rugby and all for a very reasonable cost I must say. The new larger advert has worked really well so far. I’m receiving a lot more enquiries and I now have several new customers who will hopefully give me repeat business.

There’s so much to discover! with Brian Grealy: 07583 454524 www.rugbyramblers.org.uk A fine local winter walk brought out 26 members of the ramblers walking a seven mile circular loop from Boughton. Commencing outside the village community centre, an initial stroll through the established part of the village lead on through to the intersection at the head of the straight mile. Crossing directly over the road, the walk was lead down the opposite drive through the farm and storage area. This afforded a rare opportunity to walk through the heart of this very busy facility. The walk continued along a clearly defined pathway through fields to the outskirts of Limekiln Farm, here a sharp turn to the West was taken and abruptly halted while a pair of horses were allowed time to pass through. It was observed how well one of the riders had done in restraining and calming one of their mounts that had become very agitated and unsettled by encountering the large group of walkers. Proceeding along the pathway and open lanes into the heart of StrettonUpon-Dunsmore; a half-way coffee break was taken on the village green. The route taken from the village was the

“Coffin Walk” a former cross-faith burial procession route between the village church and that of St Mary’s Priory at Princethorpe. The well trodden path was followed up into the lane leading to the Fosse Way above the Three Horseshoes pub. A sharp turn to the left and uphill stroll before crossing the road just short of the static mobile home park was taken. Following the bridleway down through the fields to the small stile-footbridge, a change in the weather finally brought through the bright sunshine that had been threatening for most of the morning. A long trudge up the large open ridge and furrow field following the fairly indistinct path finally lead through to a small lane. The group followed the lane down into the well kept village of Frankton, where a large proportion of the ramblers visited the appropriately named “Friendly Inn” for some much earned refreshment. Following the short walk back to the cars outside the community centre, farewells were exchanged and thanks were expressed to Ann for her efforts in leading this lovely walk so well.

The joy of keeping guinea pigs by Phil Bevington, store manager at Pets at Home Rugby Guinea pigs are lovely, intelligent and inquisitive animals and make really rewarding pets for adults or children (with adult supervision!) Despite their small size, guinea pigs are still a huge responsibility and a long-term commitment. They can live for five to six years so be sure you can commit to caring for them throughout their whole lives. If you decide to make a guinea pig part of the family then we recommend you commit to more than one. Guinea pigs are very social and will be happiest living with at least one other compatible guinea pig. A good combination is a neutered male with one or more females, or a pair or group of females. Your guinea pigs will also appreciate human company, so you’ll have to play, stroke or cuddle them every day. You’ll also need to ensure you provide fresh food and water every day as well as performing regular clean outs and grooming, and be able to cover the costs of veterinary fees, food, housing, bedding and toys. Your guinea pig’s home will take up a large area of your house and/or garden. Whether kept indoors or outdoors, their home should consist

of a large shelter and exercise area, which should be strong and secure, draught-free, wellventilated and receive natural light. As well as hay, grass and plenty of fresh water, vitamin C is essential for guinea pigs - give them a fresh portion of vitamin C enriched guinea pig nuggets and fresh, leafy vegetables daily. Guinea pigs’ teeth grow constantly so it’s important to provide them with lots of hay and grass. There’s so much more to know and learn about these wonderful animals, so if you’re considering keeping them as pets our friendly colleagues will be able to answer all of your questions.

Supporting local charities

Rugby Forget-Me-Not Friends We know that living with dementia can be isolating. RFF aims to help fill the gap with a weekly visit from our carefully selected, trained volunteers. If you live with your carer then we can send two people to spend time with you! These visits are home-based but how you choose to spend your time is up to you – maybe just a chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps you’d prefer to share some hobbies or reminiscence activities? The RFF service is provided jointly by Age UK Warwickshire and Rugby Dementia Support Group - between us we have lots of experience in supporting older people. If you are over 55 and you live in the Rugby area, and you have a diagnosis of dementia (or you are a carer for somebody who has), and you are unable to attend social clubs and activities, then we might be able to help! RFF is currently welcoming volunteer Befrienders. Applicants will need to be compassionate, a good listener, and must have a sense of humour, as well as around two hours of time weekly to devote to the role. Previous experience is desirable but not essential - training in dementia awareness and ongoing support will be provided.

Call Alice for a chat on: 01788 552 545 or email us: RFF@ageukwarks.org.uk If you’d like to advertise your charity here, please contact: Amanda@aroundmagazines.co.uk 14

Young Enterprise in Rugby Secondary schools in Rugby take part in Young Enterprise activities, along with local businesses and volunteers, with a view to building a bettermotivated, educated and enterprising workforce, while at the same time making a real difference to the existing lives and future potential of young people who live and attend school in the area. (More information can be found on the website www.young-enterprise.org.uk.). The scheme offers students aged 15 to 17 the opportunity to set up and run their own real company over the course of an academic year (from late September to Easter), with the support and guidance of volunteer advisers from business. How You Can Help: We’re looking for business people who can give an hour a week during term time, from September to April, to support and advise groups of students who are doing the Young Enterprise scheme. The groups meet for an hour a week during term time, usually on business premises (subject to premises being offered by local businesses!). While the advisors are asked to lead the meetings for the first couple of weeks, beyond that the advisors are required to counsel and guide in the meetings, rather than lead and direct. New advisors are always paired with an experienced advisor, so that they have someone to

learn from and also so that there is potential for cover to allow for times when one of the advisors is not able to attend a session. Training is given along with support materials, to all new advisors. All advisors need to be DBS checked (formerly CRB) so will need to complete a form and provide photographic ID and proofs of address.

We are also looking for business premises to host the meetings. The venues need to be in the town centre with a room with tables & chairs for up to 15 people. The room needs to be available from c.4pm to 5.30pm on the same day every week. If anyone would like to know more about Young Enterprise or being an advisor, please contact Rosie Callaway at Belvoir Lettings on Newbold Road, by calling 01788 579456.

Got spare capacity – here’s a fresh way to monetize it

M

ost businesses have spare capacity from time to time. Hotels have unsold rooms, cinemas have empty seats, shops have unsold stock and consultants have unsold periods of time – I’m sure you get the idea. In an ideal world, your business would be working at 100% capacity 100% of the time but that rarely happens in reality So what can you do about it? Option one - do nothing. You could just accept that such periods are inevitable, effectively writing off the potential value of that unsold capacity. Option two – offer discounts to monetize your spare capacity for normal currency. Many businesses rely on special offers and last minute deals to move spare capacity. The problem is that it inevitably means devaluing your product or service. The more you discount, the more your customers expect a discount, and it can drive your overall margins down, in the long run. Option three – exchange your spare capacity for other goods or services through barter. Bartering is an age-old process, but it suffers from the fundamental problem of establishing a fair rate of exchange. Option four – Monetize your unused capacity using a complimentary currency. Many business owners are not even aware that there are many, legitimate, alternative currencies

available in the UK. These complementary currencies are designed to help people release more value from their spare capacity. Some, like the Bristol Pound, have a geographical limitation while others e.g. BBX (Business Bank Exchange), operate internationally.

What are the benefits of using a complementary currency in this way? 1)Because they facilitate the exchange of goods and services within a less competitive environment, complementary currencies allow it’s users to realise a higher value for their spare capacity. 2)They allow diverse business types to exchange goods and services that would otherwise be impossible via a traditional bartering approach. 3)Businesses can effectively purchase goods and services from other users at a discount equivalent to their gross profit margin.

Frequently asked questions Are complementary currencies legal? – Yes How are they treated for accounting & taxation purposes? – These complimentary currencies are normally accounted for, and taxed in the same way as cash. There are currently more than 400 complementary currency schemes operating in the UK with the approval of HMRC. In summary If you are currently struggl ing to monetize your spare capacity, join the tho usands of other businesses who have alre ady discovered the many benefits of a comple mentary currency.

Visit the official club website: www.rugbytownfc.com Town had plenty to celebrate over the Christmas and New Year period, after enjoying an extended unbeaten run that catapulted them into the top half of the Evostik NPL South Division for the first time this season.

He continued: “It just goes to show what a nice group of people that we have in the squad at the moment, and that they have been able to perform well whilst also conducting themselves to such high standards too.”

The Boxing Day 4-0 thrashing of local rivals Daventry was a particularly sweet moment for Valley’s fans, who had previously endured a long series of heavy defeats at the Northamptonshire club’s Communications Park ground.

As at mid-January, Town had still not yet received a red card all season, and their fair play prowess was further underlined in the Non League Paper’s Fair Play Table which had them in third place overall in the country for the 276 clubs currently playing in Steps 1 – 4 of the non-league football pyramid.

a certificate to mark the award ahead of Rugby’s recent home game against Loughborough Dynamo. Town manager Dale Belford reflected on the achievement: “We’re delighted to win it and I am immensely proud for the lads. In my experience, success on the pitch doesn’t always go hand-inhand with the winning of these awards = especially with a team

Rugby’s fine footballing form on the pitch has been matched by their disciplinary performance on it too, with the club coming top of their division’s Fair Play Award chart for December. League representative John Goddard was on-hand to present Town’s Secretary Doug Wilkins with a bottle of champagne and

that has had to scrap for points in the bottom half of the table all season to-date.”

The top prize in the club’s annual Christmas raffle was scooped by Leicestershire resident Mike Dillon. Mike received his £100+ luxury hamper from Town kit man Mick Bird, who had sold the winning ticket to his (recently retired) Caterpillar UK work colleague. Mike has made the 55 mile round trip to watch Town on a number of occasions, having had his interest in the club sparked by Mick at work.

Star of the month: Kevin Thornton

FIXTURES

The ex-Coventry City and Northampton Town man has certainly shown his pedigree in a Town shirt since signing for the club at the end of September 2015. The midfielder was in particularly fine form over the holiday period, racking up a number of important goals and key assists – including a spectacular double strike at Newcastle Town in Valley’s opening game of the calendar year.

Ingredients (makes about 6) 4oz plain flour 1 large egg 12floz milk or half milk/half water 2 tbsp melted butter

Make perfect pancakes this Shrove Tuesday.

Pancakes

Estimated prep/cooking time: 30 minutes

1: Sieve flour into a large bowl; make a well in the middle. Add the egg and a small amount of the milk 2: Mix briskly/whisk the egg and milk together in the centre bringing the flour into the mixture gradually. 3: When you have formed a smooth paste add in the remainder of the milk and incorporate the melted butter and whisk until smooth. 4: Leave to stand for an hour, if you have time. This is not essential. 5: Heat the pan and brush the surface with butter or oil. 6: Pour enough batter into the pan to form a thin layer. 7: The pancake is ready to toss when the bottom has browned and the edges begin to curl upwards slightly. Agitate gently until the pancake moves freely. Jerk the pan upwards, holding it firmly and catch the pancake after it has flipped over.

Suggested fillings: The usual sugar and lemon juice are always favourites as are jam and chocolate spread. However, banana together with chocolate spread has become popular along with soft fruits and double cream and blueberries and maple syrup. For a more savoury treat try adding some mashed potato to your mixture to make pancakes chunkier and serve with bacon and eggs or cook button mushrooms and cherry tomatoes to pile on top. The possibilities are endless. Enjoy experimenting.

The Town playing squad has gone through an almost total transformation over 2015, with dependable defender Mason Rowley the only survivor from the start of the year. Belford has been quick to utilise his footballing contacts to bring in a number of new faces in his three and a half months in charge, with ex-Coventry City and Northampton midfielder Kevin Thornton the most recognisable of the arrivals.
