Philipsburg In the heart of Philipsburg, featuring over a mile of shopping. In addition to Front Street, there is Old Street with attractive gift stores and art galleries, and Back Street with a colorful local market, souvenir shops, and inexpensive clothing.
THE CAPITAL OF DUTCH SINT MAARTEN, PHILIPSBURG, IS RICH IN HISTORY AND ABUNDANT IN SHOPPING. Founded in 1763 by John Philips, a Scottish captain in the Dutch Navy, the town’s history is still felt when you pass by the historic
Court House that was built in 1793. Philipsburg became a bustling center for international trade including salt mining, which was
the Dutch settler’s main interest in this unique island. Remnants of the original Great Salt Pond can still be seen while driving along Walter A. Nisbeth Road, also known as Pondfill Road.
FRONT STREET ON THE DUTCH SIDE
Marigot CHIC MARIGOT ON THE FRENCH SIDE
The entire center and marina area of Marigot is a lovely shopping district with old Créole houses, bistro bars, cafes, restaurants, fashion and designer boutiques, jewelers and perfume shops. Set sail from Simpson Bay Resort & Marina or enjoy a 10 min. drive over the causeway, to experience French flavor in the port town of Marigot.
EXPLORERS WILL BE WELL REWARDED WITH AN ADVENTURE UNLIKE ANYTHING THE DUTCH SIDE OF THE ISLAND HAS TO OFFER. In contrast to the bustling cruise ship port of Philipsburg, Marigot is home to luxury yachts and charming boutiques. The cafés and bars along the marina offer some of the best pizza on the island, daily specials and fresh mussels, and remain packed with patrons throughout the day. Inland from the marina and those bustling cafés, you’ll find the Rue de la Liberté and the beginning of your shopping experience in Marigot.
PHILIPSBURG On most days, it is impossible to miss the gigantic vessels docked at the A.C. Wathey Pier.
With it’s compact nature and easy-to-

MARIGOT Shops in Marigot offer many of the same high-end goods you’ll find in Philipsburg,
like perfume, jewelry and clothing, but with a decidedly French influence. Many of the best boutiques can be found in the West Indies Mall, which lies at the base of a hill. Fort St. Louis sits at the top, built in 1767 from plans developed by King Louis XVI, most famous for being guillotined during the French Revolution, this squat stone fort is one of the must-see sites in Marigot and offers a stunning view of the entire city. The city’s cemetery, which dates back to the early 19th century with French Caribbean influence will be noticeable to anyone who has been to New Orleans and seen similar above ground crypts. Along with these sites, visitors should be sure to hit Marigot’s open-air market, which takes place each

Pinel Island: A Tiny Piece of Paradise By David Minasian JUST OFF THE NORTHEAST SIDE OF THE FRENCH PORTION OF THE ISLAND. St. Martin sits a tiny piece of paradise known as the Ilet de Pinel, or Pinel Island. Despite a width of less than half a mile, visitors to this hidden oasis can find much to do here.
Those looking to sunbathe on a deserted beach, swim in crystal clear waters, snorkel among undisturbed coral reefs, or simply enjoy a favorite drink or delicious meal, need look no further than Pinel Island. Located just across the Cup-deSac Bay, Pinel Island just may be St. Martin’s best kept secret.
To get to the island, one only needs to board the Panel Island Ferry which departs

There are a number of hiking trails which criss cross the island’s landscape. Since there are no real hills or obstructions, hiking is not terribly strenuous. In fact, it takes only 15 minutes to walk from one side of the island to the other. Along the way you will most likely encounter a number of friendly and colorful iguanas hoping for a hand out of any surplus French fries you might have on you. And the view from the island’s slightly elevated areas provides a panoramic view of the St. Martin mainland which are truly breathtaking.
Having Fun Protecting the Beauty of St. Martin/St. Maarten
First time visitors to St. Martin are often struck by the unlikely combinations of lush and dry vegetation growing side by side.
By David Minasian ONE OF THE BLESSINGS BESTOWED UPON ST. MARTIN IS ITS UNIQUE and often dry subtropical climate which has resulted in an exceptional array of flora and fauna that today blankets many parts of the island.
St. Martin also plays
host to a wide variety of bird species that co-exist along the island’s coastline and near the edges of the mangrove swamps. Terns, Frigatebirds, Gannets, Brown Pelicans, Hummingbirds and Bananaquits are all members of the St. Martin family, along with the native Iguanas which like to casually bask in the sun on the warm rocks that line the shore. As part of its commitment to the protection of the environment, the island of St. Martin has dedicated itself to the
practice of Ecotourism. Visitors are encouraged to explore the island through various activities such as hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, quad riding and kayaking.
Cactus, bougainvillea and flamboyant for example are often intertwined with hibiscus, coconut palms and ferns, creating a oneof-a-kind setting that is truly idyllic.
In this manner, explorers can discover the magic of St. Martin without disrupting its natural resources.
The French side of the island offers numerous hiking adventures from organizations such as the Dream of Trail Association which was formed in 2014 by a group of
nature-race enthusiasts. Loterie Farm, the island’s only private nature sanctuary, consists of 135 acres complete with hiking trails and zip lines, a pool, a bar and a
restaurant. And then there is Le Ranch du Galion on the east side of the island near Salines d’Orient Bay which is a horse sanctuary that offers horseback riding and
beautiful trails along the shore. And finally you have Seaworld Explorer in Grand Case, a place where you can board a semi-submersible vessel that takes adventurers on a 60 minute tour of St. Martin’s underwater seascape.
On the Dutch side of St. Maarten there is the Parrot Ville Bird Sanctuary, a secret gem tucked away in the island’s interior where visitors get the opportunity to interact with some of the world’s friendliest birds. Visitors are welcome to feed them, and many will perch on your shoulders or hands and even pose for pictures. Meanwhile, the Rain Forest Adventure Park features the steepest zip lines in the world along
with a breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of the island. Both the Sea Horse Sun and Seaside Nature Park offer horseback riding with the Nature Park also providing a petting zoo for children. And finally, we have the Tri Sport Eco Tours of Simpson Bay which offers just about everything you can imagine from bicycling to kayaking, from paddle-boarding to hiking, and from boogie-boarding to snorkeling.
By partaking in these various events, the beauty of St. Martin can be enjoyed and
protected simultaneously; ensuring that its many natural attributes will remain
intact for generations to come.
