Activities are subject to change and for a complete line up, check the activities board located adjacent to the Tour Desk in the lobby entrance, or visit the Activities booth below the kiddies pool, Ext. 7224.

Don’t miss the orientation briefing on Saturday at 9 a.m in the Lobby. This informative chat will help you find out about all the activities available at the resort and around the island.

HIT THE BEACH

SUN TIPS

Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach.

You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water. If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt.

The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

TIPS PARA TOMAR EL SOL Es muy fácil broncearse al inicio de sus vacaciones, en especial si usted viene de un clima frío. Evite sobrexponerse al sol, tome sus precauciones y use protector solar con FPS (por lo menos 15) según su tipo de piel. Elija productos que no dañen el ambiente y aplíquelo de manera frecuente después de nadar.

Si va a esnorquelear le recomendamos usar una playera.

El sol está más intenso entre las 11 a.m. y las 2 p.m., así que protéjase aunque esté nublado o haya viento.

LO MEJOR DE LA PLAYA Costa Linda está localizado en Eagle Beach, una de las playas más hermosas en Aruba. Segura y protegida, sus refrescantes arenas blancas, aguas poco profundas y su tamaño hacen de este sitio el ideal para los niños, además de ser uno de los preferidos de las familias locales.

Hay área de sombra, camastros y sillas para la playa disponibles en orden de llegada para el uso de socios y huéspedes registrados en Costa Linda de 7 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Por favor cuide sus pertenencias en el área de playa. Encontrará el reglamento de playa y alberca en la sección Consejos del resort de esta revista, favor de tomarse un momento para leerlo. Eagle Beach es una playa pública y no cuenta con salvavidas, por lo que nade bajo su propio riesgo.

POOL FUN Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old.

Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

DIVERSIÓN EN LA PISCINA Relájese en la alberca y pase uno de los momentos más divertidos al participar en actividades grupales como aeróbicos y voleibol acuático y luego refrésquese en los jacuzzis. TENNIS, ANYONE?

After swimming and splashing in the kids pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specifically for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week.

You must supervise your children at all times and ensure that there is no rough play on the equipment that may endanger their safety. The use of the installations is at your own risk.

Challenge your friends to a game. There are two lighted tennis courts located to the south of the main entrance of the resort. Court hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

You may use the courts for one hour a day. Free tennis lessons see daily schedule.

Reservations can be made at the front desk or call Ext. 7202.

PLAIN SAILING The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 7224.

Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the use of kayaks is at your own risk.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

VELERO SENCILLO Las tranquilas aguas de Eagle Beach son excelentes para practicar kayak y navegar en velero, como socio o huésped de Costa Linda tiene derecho al uso gratuito de kayak por una hora por suite. Reservaciones en el módulo de toallas o llame a la Ext. 7224.

FITNESS CENTER Keep up with your daily workout at the Fitness Center where you’ll find a variety of exercise machines to help you stay in shape. The gym staff is on hand to help you and provide for your every need.

Please wear proper attire: shirt, shorts and sneakers. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The minimum age for the Gym is 15 years old. The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Access to the Costa Linda Beach Resort is controlled and all owners and guests must register at the Front desk upon arrival. The Resort assumes no responsibility for those not properly registered. The use of resort facilities is reserved exclusively for Costa Linda owners and guests.

Costa Linda is a family resort and swearing, topless and nude bathing, drugs and public drunkenness are not tolerated. Please take note that the legal drinking age on Aruba is 18 and an ID is required. No loud music or parties after 11 p.m. The Board reserves the right to assess a fine of up to one week’s maintenance fee if the resort regulations are violated.

El acceso a Costa Linda Beach Resort está controlado, todos los propietarios y huéspedes deben registrarse en Recepción a su llegada. El club no asume ninguna responsabilidad sobre aquellas personas no registradas. El uso de las instalaciones del resort está reservado exclusivamente para propietarios y huéspedes de Costa Linda.

YOUR RESORT HOME When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understand why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit.

As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front desk for assistance. You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes. Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.

The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues. Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.

On Sundays your towels will be changed, toiletries will be replenished and trash cans will be emptied. We kindly request that you keep your room as clean as possible. Please do not hang towels or clothes on your balcony railing. Use the laundry line in the bathroom and the towel racks on the decks. A Housekeeping surcharge may be applied if your room requires additional cleaning.

AIR-CONDITIONING Costa Linda Beach Resort has installed a state of the art environmentally friendly “Smart Thermostat” system as part of its ongoing commitment to our owners and the community at large. The Smart Thermostat system senses when the Suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. This prevents harmful mold issues, humidity damage and energy waste.

Rules

Reglamento de albercas y playa DO NOT RESERVE MORE THAN 1 CHICKEE HUT PER ROOM. All chaise lounges will be available for use from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis.

The hotel reserves the right to remove belongings in the event a chaise lounge and/or a hut is left unattended for more than two hours. The removed items will be held at the Towel Hut and can be retrieved between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

You may sign out towels with the room keys. Only one towel may be issued per person per day and you should return them before 6 p.m. to obtain a clean towel in the morning. The penalty is $15 US if you misplace a towel. All towels must be returned prior to check out. The Towel Hut is located in front of the kiddies playground and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Ext. 7414.

Do not leave personal property unattended.

Electrical appliances and radios are not allowed in the pool area.

No bottles on the beach.

Skateboards are not allowed on the premises.

Children under three years old are not allowed in the main pool. Children who are not potty trained, in diapers or swimmies are not allowed in the main pool. This rule will be strictly enforced. Please use the “baby” pool. Children aged three to five must be supervised by parents or a guardian in the main pool. Children over the age of six may only use the main pool if they know how to swim.

No lifeguard on duty, swim at your own risk in the pool and on the beach. Management is not responsible for accidents or injuries.

Running jumps from the poolside into the pool is prohibited.

Jumping from a stationary position is permitted. Do not run or engage in horseplay, no jumping or diving into the pool.

The pool deck is slippery when wet.

Always shower before going into the pool and using the Jacuzzi. Glassware, coolers, food and drink are not allowed in the pool area or the Jacuzzi.

The Jacuzzi is not suitable for the very young or elderly, persons suffering from diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, pregnant women, persons under the influence of alcohol or medication which can cause drowsiness. No children under the age of 15 years are permitted. There is a 10-minute limit for each Jacuzzi. Do not put soap in the Jacuzzi.

FAVOR DE NO RESERVAR MÁS DE UNA PALAPA POR HABITACIÓN. Todos los camastros están disponibles de 7 a.m. a 6 p.m. según el orden de llegada. El hotel se reserva el derecho de mover sus pertenencias en el caso de que un camastro o palapa sea abandonada por más de dos horas. Los artículos los podrá recuperar en el Módulo de Toallas entre 7 a.m. y 6 p.m.

Puede solicitar una toalla con la llave de la villa. Sólo una toalla puede utilizarse por persona por día y debe regresarla antes de las 6 p.m. para recibir una toalla limpia por la mañana. Hay un cargo de $15 US en caso de perder la toalla. Todas las toallas deben devolverse antes de su salida. El módulo de toallas está localizado en frente del área de juegos infantiles y está abierto de 7 a.m. a 6 p.m. Ext. 7414.

Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast.

Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat. The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 meters above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

The Aruban climate has little variation from yearly average of a sunny 81°F or 27°C tempered by northeasterly trade winds. Aruba is out of the range of the Caribbean hurricanes. A word of caution, though, the sun is strongest between 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and using a protective sunscreen is highly recommended.

Dollars widely accepted and there are ATMs throughout the island. All major credit cards are accepted on the island. Banks are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. non-stop, Monday through Friday.

Aruba shops are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Saturday and some close for lunch from noon to 2 p.m.

Mall opening hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with some of the larger stores open on Sundays.

LAtlantic Standard Time year round (equivalent to Eastern Daylight Savings Time). The difference between the European Time and Aruba Time is 5 or 6 hours (depending on Summertime or Winter-time).

POPULATION The most recent island census puts the population over 111,000, from 40 different nationalities.

LANGUAGES While most people on Aruba speak English and some Spanish, the official island languages are Dutch and Papiamento, a Creole language which is a blend of Spanish, Portuguese, African, Dutch, French, English and even Amerindian words. Derived from the Portuguese verb “papaer,” which means “to speak,” Papiamento originated during the slavery era as a pidgin lingo used by estate overseers to communicate with workers from different West African tribes.

Exploring the Island

Explorando la Isla ORANJESTAD Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796.

The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time.

Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and pictu- resque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.

Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.

Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions.

The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island. Visit the Kunsthuis art gallery, café and cultural center where the entertainment program includes concerts, theater, movies and exhibitions.

Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. Palm Beach is the island’s most famous and busiest beach and the location for many of its most popular waterfront restaurants and bars. Traveling south from Eagle Beach, Manchebo, Punta Brabo and Druif are all picturesque spots. Mangel Halto is a secluded cove that is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reef is so close to the coast that shore diving is possible.

The shallow and sheltered bays of Rogers and Baby Beach are popular with visitors and locals alike and boast shade huts and food stands. On the windward shore, the surf is stronger and the coastline opens up to offer dramatic views of wide beaches such as Boca Grandi and Wariruri. There are also extensive dunes, rock platforms and natural limestone arches, basins and sea caves created over the centuries by wind and waves.

SPANISH LAGOON Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

EXPLORE FURTHER Other sites of interest on the island include San Nicolas, the second largest town which grew up around the oil refinery and attracted workers from many of the British Caribbean islands. They kept their own customs, including calypso, carnival, steel bands and cuisine and the community has a unique ambiance. Visitors can go into the bush to explore the ruins of the 19th century gold smelters at Bushiribana and Balashi or the rock formations at Casibari and Ayo. The Donkey Sanctuary in Santa Lucia was founded in 1997 to provide a home for stray animals and for a glimpse of Africa you can also call in at the Ostrich Farm.

ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK Protecting one third of the island’s surface, Arikok National Park is a patchwork of rolling hills covered in cacti and bent divi trees, strange rock formations (lava, quartz diorite and limestone), caves and a stretch of coastline with beaches, dunes and rock platforms. The arid landscape is home to a surprising variety of birds including the endemic shoko or Aruba burrowing owl and prikichi or parakeet, orioles and hummingbirds, snakes, lizards, iguanas, wild donkeys and goats. Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants.

The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers. A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

Indeed, the island has its own windsurfing community and over the past few years, several local windsurfers have triumphed in international tournaments.
