Elliott

Was born on January 1, 1971 in Manchester Jamaica 41 years ago.

At the age of 15 he worked at a carpenter shop. In those days he would have never imagine that someday he would be the GREAT CHEF “ELLIOTT”.

When he turned 19 and came to Aruba, a complete strange and different island to him, he never thought that this was the island that he would realize all his dreams.

Arriving at this beautiful island he started working at the famous restaurant “Valentino’s” that used to be in the Caribbean Palm Village hotel, washing plates (dishwasher).

There is where he started wanting to become more. Two years later, at the age of 21, he got the opportunity he was waiting for, the opportunity that will open many doors for him in the future. There was an opening for cook helper in the pasta section, and the chef asked Jeffrey if he wanted to take that chance. Jeffrey very happy accepted. He had to start the very next day. It was for the first time he was standing there in a white jacket and a big white chef-cap.

His co-workers called him “Happy Man” since he was always singing and dancing while he worked.

From there he had to start to study and work very hard, since the restaurant paid a cook course for him in Bushiri Hotel in order for him to have more knowledge in the kitchen and become better in his job.

At the age of 29 Jeffrey was recognized

for the 10 years he was working with the famous “Valentino’s” (At that time he was working for about 5 years as a sous-chef ).

In the year 2003 he quit his job at “Valentino’s”, which years later closed down.

With his experience he helped to open other restaurants like: Tomato Charlie and the famous Pizza Bob’s Restaurant & Pub, which exists for 7 years already and is situated in the Costa Linda Beach Resort. It’s famous for the best pizza’s and pumpkin soup of the whole island.

It’s there at Pizza Bob where he met the love of his life who years later he married; Daisy Alcibiades- Elliott. Now they have a beautiful family with two precious kids Jaled Daroy and Dayleen Gayle. For Jeffrey his family has a great value and is his greatest treasure.

So we can see how a few of his dreams did come true.

The great Chef Elliott is very proud opening the famous restaurant “Ellioti’s” named in his honor.

Chef Elliott is very enthusiastic with the opening of this elegant and inviting Italian Restaurant to delight everyone with his delicious and famous plates like: “Piato del Pescatore, Tenderloin Pizzaiola, Fish Pistachio and Petto di Pollo Repieno” These are just a few examples of the delicious plates that you can enjoy from the hands of Chef Elliott at the elegant and inviting Italian Restaurant “Ellioti’s”.

Everyone who had tasted one or more of the delicious plates of the Great Chef Elliott cannot stop to express: Uhmmmmm!!! Because this Man indeed has an incomparable talent. Uhmmmmm!!!

Jeffrey Roy Elliott Nació en Enero de 1971 en Manchester Jamaica hace 41 años.

A la edad de 15 años trabajó en un taller de carpintería. En aquellos días, él nunca habría imaginado que algún día iba a ser el gran chef “Elliott”.

Cuando cumplió 19 años llegó a Aruba, para él una isla completamente extraña y diferente, nunca pensó que se trataba de la isla donde cumpliría todos sus sueños.

Al llegar a esta hermosa isla comenzó a trabajar en el famoso restaurante “Valentino”, que solía estar en el hotel Caribbean Palm Village, de lavaplatos (lavavajillas). Ahí es donde empezó a querer ser más. Dos años más tarde, a la edad de 21 años, tuvo la oportunidad que estaba esperando que le abriria muchas puertas en el futuro. Hubo una vacante para ayudante de cocinero en la sección de pastas, y el chef le preguntó a Jeffrey si quería correr ese riesgo. Jeffrey muy feliz aceptó. Tenía que empezar al día siguiente. Esa fue la primera vez que estaba allí de pie con una chaqueta blanca y un gorro blanco de chef.

Sus compañeros de trabajo lo llamaron “el hombre feliz”, ya que siempre estaba cantando y bailando mientras él trabajaba.

A partir de ahí tuvo que empezar a estudiar y trabajar muy duro, ya que el restaurante le pagaba un curso de cocina en el Hotel Bushiri para que él tuviera más conocimiento en la cocina y llegar a ser mejor en su puesto de trabajo.

A la edad de 29 Jeffrey fue reconocido por los 10 años que llebaba trabajando con el famoso “Valentino”. (En ese momento había trabajado por cerca de cinco años como sous-chef)

En el año 2003 renunció a su trabajo en “Valentino”, que años más tarde, cerró.

Con su experiencia ayudó a abrir otros restaurantes como: Tomate Charlie y el famoso Pizza Bob Restaurant & Pub, que existe desde hace ya 7 años, y está situado en Costa Linda Beach Resort. Es famoso por ser el de mejor pizza y sopa de calabaza de toda la isla.

Ahí en el Pizza Bob es donde él conoció al amor de su vida, con quien se casó años después; Daisy Alcibíades-Elliott. Ahora tienen una hermosa familia con dos niños preciosos Jaled Daroy y Gayle Dayleen. Para Jeffrey su familia tiene un gran valor y es su mayor tesoro.

Así podemos ver cómo algunos de sus sueños se hicieron realidad.

El gran chef Elliot se siente muy orgulloso de abrir el famoso restaurante “Ellioti’s” nombrado en su honor y está entusiasmado con la apertura de este restaurante italiano elegante y acogedor para deleitar a todos con sus deliciosos y famosos platos como: “Piato del Pescatore, Lomo Pizzaiola, pistacho Pesca y Petto di Pollo Repieno”.

Estos son sólo algunos ejemplos de los deliciosos platos que se pueden disfrutar de las manos del chef Elliott en el elegante y acogedor restaurante italiano “Ellioti’s”.

Todos los que han probado uno o más de los deliciosos platos de la Gran Chef Elliott no puede dejar de expresar: Uhmmmm!

Sign up for some of the daily activities we offer and meet your fellow guests, take a sailboat or kayak out on the bay or try your hand at a new water sport; diving, snorkeling and even windsurfing classes can be arranged. You can stay in shape at the gym and if all of this sounds too strenuous, plan a morning at the Spa and treat yourself to some pampering! Need more ideas? Visit the concierge desk in the lobby and start planning your vacation.

Hit the beach Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba.

Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families.

Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them.

Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

Lo mejor de la playa Costa Linda está localizada en Eagle Beach, una de las playas más hermosas en Aruba.

Segura y protegida, sus refrescantes arenas blancas, aguas poco profundas y su tamaño hacen de este sitio el ideal para los niños, además de ser uno de los preferidos de las familias locales.

Plain sailing The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 654.

Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the use of kayaks is at your own risk.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

Pool fun Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the jacuzzis after your sunbathing session.

If you have small children take them to the kids pool, it is suitable for tots up to six years old.

Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

After swimming and splashing in the kids pool, take the little ones to the beachfront play area designed specially for them. The kids play gym is suitable for children under the age of 12 and there are a variety of complimentary events during the week.

Activities for All Have we got a week of fun lined up for you! Join in the activities organized for adults and children during the week. There’s something different every day ranging from pool and beach games to arts and crafts, bingo and live steel band music for adults. Keep the children busy with jewelry making, finger painting and sand castles, a tug of war and a scavenger hunt on the beach.

Activities are subject to change and for a complete line up, check the activities board located adjacent to the Tour desk in the lobby entrance, or visit the Activities booth below the kiddies pool, Ext 654.

Sun tips It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water.

If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

CLBR’s True Life Hero Does It Again El Heroe de CLBR lo hace de nuevo Anthony Gumbs proves every day on the job as Costa Linda’s Beach supervisor what an asset he is to the resort. His strong work ethic and warm, sunny disposition are examples for all to follow.

But for the second time in a year, he has proven that he will always go above and beyond, especially when it comes to the safety and health of the resort’s members and guests. Recently, he rushed into the sea to rescue CLBR member Edward Miller, who had suffered an epileptic seizure. Mr. Miller was under water by the time Anthony was summoned to help.

Anthony carried Mr. Miller, who was unconscious, out of the water, placed him on the sand and began administering CPR. He was assisted by several onlookers, including a member who was also a police officer. After working feverishly to revive him, Mr. Miller, who also suffered an injury that left him bleeding, regained consciousness. His wound was attended to and was kept calm until the ambulance arrived. He was taken to the hospital where he remained under observation.

Last year at this time, during extremely rough seas, Anthony rushed out into a dangerous ocean to rescue two members who had been injured after being knocked down by extremely strong waves. Anthony is, incidentally, one of 35 employees who have been trained in CPR, including all beach attendants, all security staff, the social activities team, and gym trainers.

CLBR has three emergency locations; the front desk, the gym, and the towel hut. All three locations are fully equipped with complete oxygen and defibrillator kits (with extra batteries and patches for adults and children), as well as an ambulance rated first aid kit, among other emergency/rescue items.

A grateful and proud CLBR management gave Anthony a token of appreciation, a $150 gift certificate to El Gauchos, and additional ways to honor him are being planned.

Anthony Gumbs prueba cada día en su trabajo como supervisor de playa de Costa Linda el importante recurso que es para el resort. Su fuerte ética de trabajo y su cálida disposición son ejemplos a seguir para todos.

Pero por segunda vez en un año, él ha probado que siempre irá más arriba y más allá, especialmente cuando se trata de la seguridad y la salud de los socios e invitados del resort. Your Resort Home When you stay at the Resort, you are not a guest in a hotel, you own your suite during the interval purchased. The Resort is not a hotel, nor is it managed as such. Accepting this fundamental difference is essential to understanding why compensation is not permitted for any minor inconvenience you might encounter during your visit.

As in your home, unexpected problems can occur. If a drain clogs or the safe will not open, call the Front dresk for assistance.

You can be assured the matter will be taken care of as quickly as possible, often within minutes.

Furthermore, situations sometimes occur as a result of miscommunication or human error. Accidents will happen. Rather than expecting some form of complimentary compensation, a sincere apology from Front Desk personnel should suffice.

Guests who insist upon complimentary compensation for inconvenience or honest mistakes must understand and accept the difference between hotel and Resort Management. Unlike hotels, the Costa Linda Beach Resort is nonprofit. Owner dues cover operating expenses only. There are no funds to cover free dinners, extra nights, or gifts. The cost of such compensatory awards would come directly from owner dues.

The Costa Linda Beach Resort is your vacation home. If a problem arises please report it. Staff members will do everything possible to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, but they are not permitted to offer, nor allowed to give, free gifts. You can expect an apology for an inconvenience, but not a reward.

• Do not reserve more than 1 chickee hut per room.

• All chaise lounges will be available for use from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis. The hotel reserves the right to remove belongings in the event a chaise lounge and/or a hut is left unattended for more than two hours. The removed items will be held at the Towel Hut and can be retrieved between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• Children under the age of three and in pampers are not allowed in the main pool, please use the children’s pool. Children aged three to five must be supervised by parents or a guardian in the main pool. Children over the age of six may only use the main pool if they know how to swim.

• Do not leave personal property unattended.

• Proper attire is required (swimming wear only). No nude or topless sunbathing by the pool or on the beach.

• Electrical appliances / radios are not permitted in the pool area.

• Glassware, coolers, food and drink are not allowed in the pool area or the Jacuzzi. No bottles on the beach.

Restaurant Renovation Water’s Edge 12°N Renovación del restaurante The restaurant project got underway shortly after the Annual General Meeting of Members in late June 2011, at which Costa Linda owners approved a proposition to transfer monies from the Renovations Fund to the Restaurant Project.

Costa Linda Beach Resort this past January officially turned over the Restaurant Project to the concessionaire, who completed the interior build out and décor of the resort’s new seaside eatery. Members of the CLBR gardening staff put the finishing touches on the exterior areas of the new facility with some beautiful landscaping.

Costa Linda’s new ocean front restaurant and bar has an exceptional venue. Owner Roy Leitch’s goal for the new eatery is to serve consistently good food taking advantage of the dramatic scenery and ocean breezes, providing a different ambiance for evening meals. Items from a new light menu are served at the bar. Snacks, a lighter lunch and/or supper are served there throughout the day and evening hours.

There is also a regular lunch menu and a separate dinner menu. Service from these menus are also available at the bar.

This spectacular new facility is part of a program expected to yield a substantial economic benefit to Costa Linda, this project not only provides us with a spectacular new ocean front restaurant facility; it represents the single most important investment and action Costa Linda Beach Resort can take to create an internal profit center that will significantly subsidize our operational costs in the years to come.

As the sun goes down, the island pace picks up. Candles flicker in the dusk, the drums start rolling and the party is ready to begin. Aruba is famous for its nightlife and a variety of choices awaits visitors. The Carubbian festival inaugurated in June 2011 takes place in San Nicolas every Thursday night from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m., showcasing the multicultural charms of Aruba’s “Sunrise City.” Tourists can purchase a package at their hotel including round-trip transportation. First impressions

Primeras impresiones

What is the first thing you see when you approach Costa Linda, aside from the buildings, it’s the landscaping that is our first impression of the Costa Linda property.

Without the lovely swaying palm trees, the magnificent purple bougainvillea, pink and white oleander, and all of the multi-colored flowers and foliage, Costa Linda would be just another building in the sand.

The Costa Linda property is quite large. The property starts behind Pizza Bob’s, bordering the parking lot to the Alhambra property and ends at the white fence behind the building, on the north side of the property. The entire property is kept pruned on a 3 week interval. This gives the plants time to flower so we can enjoy their beautiful colorful flowers between the pruning cycles. It takes approximately 3 weeks to prune the entire property, so this means that besides all the other duties of this staff, new planting beds, removal and replacement of old or damaged existing plants, fertilizing, mowing the grass, etc. they are constantly pruning the shrubs to keep Costa Linda looking her best.

So, who is behind the scenes, maintaining and pruning and replanting all of these plants around the Costa Linda? It’s Fritz Emmanuel. Fritz, we learned, was born and educated in horticulture in Haiti. He has been employed by Costa Linda for 17 years the last 9 as Head Groundskeeper and he is responsible for a four man landscaping team that maintains our beautiful grounds.

In walking the Costa Linda grounds with Fritz, we learned that Fritz knows every plant by name and of course, where they should be planted, whether they needed sun or shade. How much fertilizer is needed and how much water is necessary, which with all the rain in the past few months, can prove to be a real problem, not only for the health of the plants but trying to keep up with the weeds and grass that grow in the planting beds and sidewalks. Fritz is constantly trying to maintain healthy and beautiful plants, so we can enjoy them every day.

If you have noticed, the new planting beds have a stone base and Fritz uses different color crushed stone for design and depth and to give the planting beds an interesting look. Fritz told us that all of the planting beds are going to have this type of stone as a base, instead of woodchips, which were used in the past. We asked if the woodchips are discarded once they are removed, Fritz explained that they are not thrown away but ground up for use in a compost planting mix, which Fritz uses in the greenhouse for propagating new plants.

The greenhouse was an idea that Fritz presented to the new management. He knew that if given the proper place, he thought that money could be saved in the landscaping budget on plant replacements by dividing existing plants or starting plants from cuttings and/or starting plants from seed. Today, Fritz has his greenhouse, which is located at the rear of the maintenance area, and the management is pleased with the savings the greenhouse has provided. Fritz has a variety of plants growing there, for future use. One of the plants that Fritz is extremely proud of, growing in the greenhouse, are yellow double hibiscus. Of course, new plants are occasionally needed. Not everything can be raised in the greenhouse, so when the need occurs, Fritz come up with a design and gets the plants he needs, from a local garden center.

Sometimes the smallest things can cause a large problem for the landscaping team.

Power washing the building, in fact, caused some surface damage to plants in front of the buildings on the north side facing the pool. Apparently, the wind caused the chlorine, used in the power washing solution, to land on these plants making them look a little brown or sunburnt. Of course, this all will grow out in time.

Fritz is a very soft spoken man who takes great pride in his work. Fritz and his team are a very large asset to the Costa Linda family of staff that maintains the beautiful Costa Linda Beach Resort, which we call “home”.

We learned from Fritz that insects can be a problem and can damage plants, but a bigger problem is with the Iguana’s. The Iguana’s have done major damage to the bougainvillea and multi-colored croton plants and in some planting beds they have eaten and killed entire young plants. Fritz has realized that the Iguana’s will eat the young plants, but not the more mature plants. So now, when he is replacing these plants he makes sure, that the plants are mature, before planting them in the ground. We asked Fritz “Why were there no hibiscus in the planting beds”. He told us that the Iguana’s are the problem and he is waiting for more pottery to arrive so he can display some of his beautiful double yellow hibiscus around the property, away from the ever hungry Iguana.

If you notice the new planting bed near the pool bathrooms, you will see a bougainvillea in the beautiful orange pot, in the center of the planting bed. We asked Fritz “Why would you put this plant there when you know the Iguana will eat it”. Fritz explained that the reason he could plant the bougainvillea in this planting bed, was that it is in a pot with a glazed and slippery surface and the Iguana cannot climb up the pot.

We asked Fritz about the coconuts palms trees on the beach and why they were always pruning off the coconuts. He told us that this is done for safety reasons, but they leave the coconuts on the palm trees in the front of the property, for a tropical look.

Fritz is very proud of the entire property and we took a walk through the Garden of Eden.

This is the garden are between the buildings on the North wing of the property. This area in the past years was very over grown. Fritz and his staff have been pruning back the growth and making it attractive again. Fritz explained that the entire Garden of Eden will be re-done, once all of the exterior floor tiles have been replaced.

All of the plant signage, you see around the property is the result of the landscape team. Fritz will research the plants online and send this information to the main office. The signs get printed in the main offices and once laminated Fritz will install them on the sign posts and the landscapers will put these signs under or near the proper plants.

Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island. The first European to visit Aruba was the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda in 1499 and in 1636 it became a Dutch colony. The name Aruba is derived from the words “ore” and “ruba” or red gold, a reference to the discovery of gold on the island in 1824.

Aruba is 19.6 miles long and 6 miles across, totaling 77 square miles or 193 square kilometers. Aruba is located 12° 30’ North Latitude; 68° 58’ West Longitude; 19 miles north of the Venezuelan coast, 990 nautical miles from Miami and 890 nautical miles from the Equator. Aruba is situated on the Caribbean Tectonic Plate. The island is made up of limestone-capped hills and ridges, with cliffs on the northern and northeastern coasts and coral reefs on the southern coast. Aruba’s terrain is almost entirely flat.

The highest elevation, Mount Jamanota, is only 188 m above sea level. Rock formations characterize the interior of the island.

Boca Grandi Beach is kite/wind surfers number one choice in Aruba. It is located at the very bottom of the southeast side of the island. The wind is side on shore, so it is safe for beginners as well.

Arashi Beach is another spectacular beach not far from the California Lighthouse with white sand and vast shallow waters. The wind is off shore and you are on your own here. (Advanced sailors only)

Rodger’s Beach is another alternative but for advanced sailors only. The beach is located at the very south point of the island just past San Nicolas. Again the wind is side to side off shore.

Druif Beach is not as gusty as the Fishermen’s Huts and the wind directions are side onshore. Rescue boats are available just drop by the water sports center and introduce yourself, so that they will keep an eye for you.

Whatever the month, however, kiting & windsurfing is year round in Aruba. Please remember to bring plenty of sun block.

Oranjestad Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century.

The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time.

Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear.

Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares.

Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. Spanish Lagoon wetlands Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years.

Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants. The park is also dotted with stone dwellings or cunucu which date from the Colonial period and housed the poorest settlers and their estate workers.

A network of trails traverses the park and guided tours are available.

You can charter a boat for a day or a half-day and the experienced crew will take you right to where the fish are running. Help preserve local fish stocks by adhering to the catch and release policy.

The Shoco Bird El Pájaro Shoco The Shoco Bird also known, as Burrowing Owls are fascinating creatures so named because they live underground in burrows that have been dug out by small mammals like ground squirrels and prairie dogs.

They are covered in brown spotted feathers and have long legs. They also have distinctive white “eyebrows” above bright yellow eyes.

This species is able to live for at least 9 years in the wild and over 10 years in captivity.

They have many natural enemies, including badgers and snakes and are often killed by vehicles when crossing roads.

Key Facts about the Shoco Bird • Height: about 10 inches.

• Weight: average is about 6 ounces.

Unlike most owls in which the female is larger than the male, the sexes of the burrowing owl are the same size.

• Diet: burrowing owls eat small mammals such as moles and mice and also eat insects, especially grasshoppers and beetles. Burrowing owls are also known to eat birds, amphibians and reptiles.

• Population: current burrowing owl population estimates are not well known but trend data suggests significant declines across their range. Most recent official estimates place them at less than 10,000 breeding pairs.

• Nesting: burrowing owls often nest in loose colonies about 100 yards apart. Nests in burrow, often dug by a mammal.

• Reproduction: mating season is on early spring. Gestation last 28 days and the young owls begin appearing at the burrow’s entrance two weeks after hatching and leave the nest to hunt for insects on their own after about 45 days. The chicks can fly well at 6 weeks old.

• When alarmed, young birds will make a hissing call that sounds like a rattlesnake.

They bob their heads to express excitement or distress.

• The Burrowing Owl appears to be diurnal because it can often be seen foraging during the day. In fact, it hunts all day and night long and is most active in the morning and evening. It catches more insects during the day and more mammals at night.

Burrowing owls are much loved by the native islanders and appear on Aruba’s currency and postal stamps. On May 11th, 2010, the Aruba Birdlife Conservation foundation was established with the aim of protecting the biodiversity in general and birds in and around Aruba in particular.

Están cubiertos de plumas cafés con manchas y tienen piernas largas y en su rostro resaltan unas distintivas cejas blancas arriba de sus brillantes ojos amarillos.

Esta especie es capaz de vivir por al menos nueve años en la vida salvaje y más de diez en cautiverio. Tienen muchos enemigos naturales, incluyendo a los tejones y a las serpientes. Es común que sean atropellados por vehículos cuando cruzan por el camino.

• Comportamiento: A diferencia de otros búhos comúnmente anidan en colonias libres con aproximadamente 100 yardas de separación. Hacen sus nidos en madrigueras regularmente escarbados por un mamífero.

• Reproducción: La temporada de apareamiento es al principio de la primavera. La gestación dura 28 días y los búhos jóvenes comienzan a aparecer en la entrada de la guarida dos semanas después de su gestación siendo capaces de dejar el nido para casar insectos por su propia cuenta después de los 45 días. Los Búhos de Madriguera son muy amados por los nativos isleños y aparecen en las monedas y estampillas de Aruba. En Mayo 11 del 2010 La Fundación para la Conservación de la vida de los Pájaros de Aruba fue establecida con el propósito de proteger tanto a los pájaros como la biodiversidad en general.
