Costa Linda is located on Eagle Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches on Aruba. Safe and sheltered, its cool white sands, shallow waters and plentiful shade make it ideal for children and it is also popular with local families. Shade huts, sun loungers and beach chairs are available on a first come first serve basis for the use of registered Costa Linda members and guests from 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave the beach. You’ll find a complete list of beach and pool rules in the Resort tips section of this magazine, please take a few moments to read them. Eagle Beach is a public beach and there are no lifeguards so you swim at your own risk.

Plain Sailing

The calm waters of Eagle Beach are ideal for kayaks and sail boating and as a Costa Linda member or guest you are entitled to the complimentary use of a kayak for one hour per suite. Reservations are taken at the Towel desk or you can call Ext. 7224. Kayak hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the use of kayaks is at your own risk. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a maximum of two adults is permitted per kayak.

Pool Fun

Spend hours of watery fun in the resort pool enjoying organized activities such as volleyball and pool aerobics or simply relax pool side and cool off in the Jacuzzis after your sunbathing session. Small children will love the kids pool. It is suitable for tots up to six years old. Pool and Jacuzzi hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Please abide by the pool rules and help us keep the pool area clean.

The Gym is located beside the elevator landing (A-B Wing) on the lobby level and is open daily from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

It is easy to get carried away when sunbathing at the beginning of your vacation, especially if you are from a cold northern climate. Don’t overdo it, painful sunburn will spoil your fun. Take care and always use sun block with the SPF (at least 15) suitable for your skin type. Choose environmentally friendly sun products and apply regularly after going in the water. If you are going snorkeling it is a good idea to wear a T-shirt. The hottest time of the day is between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and remember that you can still get burnt even when it is cloudy or breezy.

A MODERN-DAY DOCTOR DOOLITTLE One young man’s passion for animals resulted in a sanctuary open for tours. by Rona Gindin

They laugh now, but surely Philip Merryweather’s parents didn’t chuckle when, at 12, their son walked around with a boa constrictor around his neck and a shoulder-high Great Dane at his side. Or when, at 16, the teenager played hooky from the family restaurant so he could nurse an injured bird at home. By the time Merryweather opened the gates to the family property for one day – just one day – so interested neighbors could take a look at his animal menagerie, his parents were more used to the idea that their prodigy had a Doctor Doolittle-like way with animals. And when 5,000 people showed up that day to gawk – “I thought, ‘How many 12 COSTA LINDA NEWS

people are going to get? Maybe 200?’” – the elder Merryweathers realized they’d better look elsewhere for restaurant staffers. Without trying, without planning, but with an enormous love of animals and a yen to care for injured ones, Merryweather built up a destination that is now known as Philip’s Animal Garden. Located adjacent to his family home in the wilds of Alto Vista, Philip’s Animal Garden is now a 60,000-square-meter destination with eight employees tending to 600 animals of 72 species, including monkeys, ocelots and the wild cat puma jaguarondi. The property

is a farm, too, producing about 85 percent of the animals’ food. Visitors have use of an information center, a cafeteria, a gazebo, and indoor and outdoor seating. “We’re constantly growing,” an enthusiastic Merryweather says now, at 30. “Next we want solar panels. I’m saving up.” When guests arrive, they pay $10 ($5 for children) at the information center, then take a guided tour. They’re free to roam once the tour is done. “People have to take the tour first because then they realize not to scream or throw food at the animals. The tour changes their mentality,” Merryweather explains.

The animal garden, known locally just as Philip’s, as in, “Let’s go to Philip’s,” truly came around organically. As a youngster, the now-entrepreneur became the community’s go-to when, say, a pelican got stuck on a barbed wire. He’d be expected at Driftwood or Red Fish, his parents’ enterprises, but stayed home. “I couldn’t be at the restaurant smiling at people knowing I had an injured animal back home,” he recalls. “It’s like being at work while your kid’s sick at school.” The lad “never said no” when asked for help and ended up keeping all but stray dogs and cats, which he adopted out. Once he opened the gate that first time, locals, including taxi drivers giving island tours, began asking for a peek. “Boom! Done!” he laughs. “People would knock on my door saying ‘Hey, can we look around?’ This happened every day – every single day!”

As the four-legged and feathered population grew, Merryweather asked to lease adjacent government land and eventually was granted his request. Mending the animals and keeping them fed is expensive, so Merryweather found a variety of ways to raise funds. What started as a tour on one jeep has turned into paid tours on three jeeps and an ATV. After arranging to have brochures placed in rental cars, he charged other businesses to add their brochures to his. Then Merryweather designed a map for those rental cars and began charging to put ads on the cap and to help with printing costs. The profits go to support the animals. As for his parents and their restaurants – all turned out OK. Their other son, Herbert Jr., graduated from college and stepped into the dining room. Philip’s Animal Garden is at Alto Vista # 116, Noord. It’s open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Smart Thermostat system senses when the Suite is unoccupied and will raise the thermostat set point to an economical humidity control setting until the moment a guest returns to the room. Please allow a few minutes for the room to cool to your selected temperature upon your return. Please be aware that the air conditioning unit will be interrupted if you should leave a door open. This prevents harmful mold issues, humidity damage and energy waste.

Shore diving in Aruba An invitation for adventure Shore diving offers divers a freedom unlike boat diving. Apart from not having to take long boat rides to the dive sites and the fact that it is a major plus for those that get sea sick easily, you are not limited to the boats schedule and can dive for as long or short as you and your dive buddy choose. Adding to all of this is the fact that it is also a cheaper and convenient option for divers on a budget or for those that just like the flexibility of diving when they want. The most exciting part of shore diving is the element of exploration and adventure. Unlike in boat dives, where you are dropped off at the dive site itself and have a captain or dive guide who knows the site, tides, currents and other considerations, when you shore dive you are mostly on your own (unless you opt for a dive master to accompany you). Shore diving requires you to start planning more than just the dive at the site. It starts with getting to know the conditions and where exactly the site is, plotting a route, finding the best entry points, having what will you need when you get there and keeping your scuba gear to a minimum, in short, shore diving requires a lot of planning and preparation to get it right in order to have a pleasant experience. There are two particular and wonderful shore diving sites to be enjoyed on Aruba, especially along its sheltered southwestern coastline. The first is Baby Beach Reef, which offers a unique opportunity for shore diving into the open sea. Large formations of Elkhorn corals, combined with sheet coral, make it a perfect place for crabs, octopus, and lobsters. The other shore diving site is Cabez Reef, recommended for experienced divers only due its rough seas and strong currents. It offers an exciting shore entry, where you come face to face with large schools of barracuda, amberjack, and rainbow runners. The location is also known for stingrays as well as for many different types of tropical fish. It is a virgin area.

Aruba was first settled by an Amerindian tribe called the Caiquetios. Rock paintings and fragments of pottery dating from around A.D. 1,000 have been found on the island. oranjeStad Nestled on the shores of Paardenbaai (bay of the horses), island capital Oranjestad sprang up at the end of the 18th century. The island’s oldest monument is Fort Zoutman, built to guard the young town in 1796. The Willem III Tower was added in 1868 to function as a lighthouse, it was named after the Dutch ruler of that time. Many of the city’s founders were merchants from Curaçao and they continued the tradition of commerce in their new home. Today Oranjestad is a peaceful and picturesque town, its streets lined with Dutch colonial gabled houses and modern buildings such as shops, malls, banks and offices that echo the architectural style of yesteryear. Spend your time in Oranjestad browsing through the many stores, malls and markets, dining or visiting several small museums and galleries. Caya Betico Croes, Havenstraat, Zoutmanstraat, Wilheminastraat and the waterfront boulevard are the principal streets. The port hums with activity when cruise ships dock and an impromptu floating market springs up at the wharf every morning when island fishermen and farmers gather to sell their wares. Located in Fort Zoutman, the History Museum has informative displays on the island’s past and local traditions. The Archaeological Museum on Zoutmanstraat is an introduction to the ancient inhabitants of Aruba and their legacy. Artifacts on display include pottery, art, stone tools and burial urns recovered at archeological sites throughout the island. BeacH HoPPing Eagle Beach is so beautiful that it would be hard get tired of it, however if you like beach hopping, the island has some of the finest pearly white strands in the Caribbean, each one with its own charm. Located on the northwestern tip of the island, Arashi Beach and Boca Catalina are sheltered, making them popular snorkeling and swimming spots. SPaniSH lagoon WetlandS Legend has it that the Spanish Lagoon was once a hideaway for pirates, whether this is true or not, the quiet waterway and the surrounding mangroves are a haven for wildlife, including herons, osprey, owls and parrots. The lagoon is located between Pos Chiquito Bay and the ruins of the Balashi Gold Mine. Follow the nature trail from the lagoon through the wetlands to Balashi and the Cunucu di Aloe plantation.

Despite its inhospitable appearance, Arikok has been inhabited for thousands of years. Rock paintings in Fontein Cave and on huge boulders and the vestiges of ancient villages are testimony to the earliest Amerindian inhabitants. ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK Impressive, deep, mysterious… Full of life If you love the rugged outdoors, spend the better part of a day hiking, biking, driving, horseback riding, or off-roading through expansive, come to Arikok National Park and marvel at Aruba’s diverse ecosystems and rural past. Ramble over hills strewn with boulders and cacti, visit old farms (known as cunucus), spelunk through caves in search of Indian rock glyphs, and slide down sand dunes. Along the way, you’ll meet hummingbirds, hawks, iguanas, and goats. The Arikok National Park is a great place to spend the entire day enjoying the dramatic landscapes. There is a small entrance fee that goes towards the preservation of the park and the animals that roam freely throughout the 7907 acres.

Aruba’s national park also protects bats that have their home inside caves with authentic Arawak Indian drawings for you to decipher. The Quadirikiri, Fontein and Huliba caves are located in the Aruba National Park. Arikok is more than just a park, it is also a beach! Diamari Beach, Dos Playa and Boca Prins are popular beaches to enjoy, the water can be rough and currents strong, so swimming is not recommended. But if you want to cool off, Aruba’s hidden treasure is the Natural Pool, perfect for taking a dip!

The Visitors’ Center has a modern sustainable design and houses an exhibit of Aruba’s endemic animals such as the Aruban whiptail lizard (cododo), Aruban cat eye snake (santanero) and endangered rattlesnake (cascabel). Moving around through the Arikok National Park is quite easy by car and also a great place to go hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding.
