For the fourth consecutive year, Roseville Parks, Recreation & Libraries (PRL) has been named a finalist for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management, a prestigious honor presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Roseville is one of only four finalists nationwide in the population category of 150,001–400,000.
This ongoing national recognition reflects PRL’s commitment to delivering high-quality services, fostering community engagement, and continually enhancing the health and wellness of Roseville residents.
“Being named a finalist for the fourth year in a row is a tremendous achievement,” said City Manager Dominick Casey. “It speaks to the innovation, consistency and passion of our PRL team and our City’s dedication to creating a vibrant and welcoming community for all.”
PRL Director Jill Geller added, “This honor reflects the exceptional work our team does every day from maintaining beautiful parks and trails to delivering enriching programs, cultural experiences and library services. PRL is where people come together, stories are shared and memories are made. We’re proud to be recognized on the national stage once again.”
Roseville PRL manages 90 parks, more than 4,000 acres of natural areas, three libraries, three pools, two golf courses, a Native American museum and 21 before- and after-school childcare sites. From storytimes and swim lessons to senior fitness classes and cultural arts programs, PRL offers a wide variety of services designed to meet the needs of residents of all ages and abilities.
The winner of the 2025 National Gold Medal Award will be announced on September 17 during the NRPA Annual Conference.

At 21 elementary school campuses across Roseville, the Adventure Club after-school program is more than just a place for children to spend their afternoons, it’s a second home. And at the heart of each site is a dedicated site director who ensures every child feels safe, seen and inspired.
For Monica Anderson, site director at Heritage Oak Elementary, Adventure Club has been more than a job, it’s been a lifelong calling. “I wanted to be a teacher, and working at Adventure Club during college was just fun,” Monica reflects. “I left for a few years but came back in 1999 and never left. I truly get paid to do what I love.”
“It’s incredible to see them grow, stay in touch, and remember us when they graduate.”
That love shines through in the bonds she’s built with generations of kids. “Some of my students I’ve known since they were two,” she says. “It’s incredible to see them grow, stay in touch, and remember us when they graduate. The relationships, that’s how we make this work. If families don’t trust us with their most precious thing, what’s the point of coming?”
Each day, site directors and their staff, create a blend of fun and structure. After the bell rings, kids at Monica’s site gather
for group activities, carpet time, snacks, themed projects and homework. “We plan our days, but no two days are ever the same,” she laughs. “And that’s the best part.”
Jessica Turner, who oversees both the Sargeant and Crestmont campuses, echoes that sentiment. “It’s organized chaos in the best way. Every day is different, and every child brings something new,” she says. With a background that includes corporate and private preschools, Jessica’s journey to Adventure Club was rooted in service from the start.
Her philosophy is simple: “I love being able to create a space where kids can be themselves, meet new friends and interact with positive role models. Even on hard days, there’s always something that reminds you why you do it. It could be a child’s smile, a drawing or just that quiet moment coloring together.”
Building a nurturing environment takes teamwork. Directors like Monica and Jessica are quick to support their
staff, checking in daily, mentoring new employees and making sure everyone feels connected. “We have a group chat, we talk constantly, and I always try to know every child’s name and family,” Monica says. Jessica adds, “Some days I feel like a magician, pulling surprises out of my bag to shift the mood and keep the day on track. A little sparkle goes a long way, and during the busy times, we all lean on each other.”
Though the challenges are real, especially adapting to new families each season or supporting kids through emotional moments, the rewards are richer. “We’re not just care providers,” Monica says. “We’re mentors, role models and sometimes the calm in a kid’s storm.”
From laughter on the playground to quiet conversations at the art table, Adventure Club directors shape lives in small but powerful ways. And with 21 passionate leaders at the helm, the future of afterschool care in Roseville looks bright, playful and full of heart.
Adventure Club offers licensed, on-campus childcare for elementary-aged children across Roseville. To learn more or register for the upcoming school year, visit: roseville.ca.us/adventureclub

When Christian Faria isn’t working his day job, he’s suiting up in armor, adjusting tire pressure and hurtling sideways into tight dirt-track turns on a brakeless bike going 60 miles per hour. Welcome to the world of speedway racing, where Christian, a Parks Maintenance Worker, has found a second home, and second family, off the clock.
Family tradition on two wheels
For Christian, speedway isn’t just a hobby, it’s a legacy. “I’ve been around it my whole life,” he says. His grandfather, a four-time national champion, raced and competed overseas. His uncle, still active in the sport, has served as both inspiration and mentor. “There’s a picture of me and him with a trophy when I was maybe two years old,” Christian recalls.
Christian and his cousin, who is just 10 years old and already racing, continue that tradition, frequently competing at Fast Fridays in Auburn and other Southern California tracks.
No brakes, no fear Speedway bikes don’t look like your average dirt bike. Built for speed and simplicity, they have a lightweight frame, a big engine…and no brakes. “It’s scary, honestly,” Christian admits. “No brakes and going 40 to 60 miles an hour. But it’s fun. It’s super competitive. That’s what got me into it.”
The race format is fast and furious: a handful of riders, four laps, flat dirt track. “When you go into a turn, you give a lot of throttle and the bike kicks sideways,” Christian explains. “It’s drifting, really, sideways at full speed.”
He’s already racked up a couple of wins in his first season and dreams of climbing the ranks from Division 3 to Division 1, where top riders can earn up to $1,000 per race.
“People see you out there racing, but they don’t know how much work goes into it”
The real work, Christian says, happens long before you hit the track. “People see you out there racing, but they don’t know how much work goes into it,” he says.
Every Wednesday and Thursday, he’s in the garage with his uncle, tuning the bike, cleaning parts and checking tire pressure.
“Rear tire pressure means a lot,” he says. “You want a little traction, but not too much. There’s no transmission, one gear, so setup matters a lot.”
Come Friday, it’s a long day: a full shift at work, then loading up and heading out for an 8:00pm race. “It’s tiring, but it’s worth it.”
For Christian, speedway is as much about camaraderie as it is competition. “Everyone helps each other. It’s one big family,” he says. “After the race, kids come over for high fives or ask me to pop a wheelie. I try to make it a great experience for them.”
Racing into the future
For now, Christian is focused on improvement. “The goal is to get better every race, take one more step forward,” he says. “Eventually, I’d love to be racing all over California.”
And yes, his coworkers know about his high-speed hobby. “Some of them think I’m crazy,” he laughs. “They’re like, ‘That’s awesome, just don’t hurt yourself.’”
Despite the risks, Christian has no plans to slow down. “I love the adrenaline rush. It makes me feel good. It’s relaxing, in a weird way. You’re one with the bike, and you’re just out there, having fun.”
For Christian, speedway isn’t just a weekend thrill, it’s part of who he is. Off the clock, he’s a racer, a risk-taker and a role model on two wheels.

Just off Interstate 80 sits a unique park that blends large-scale art and local creativity: Sculpture Park. While most people recognize the towering red steel sculpture that rises above the trees, fewer know the history of the park or the community involvement that has shaped it over the years.
Sculpture Park was developed in the late 1980s as part of Roseville’s Northeast Specific Plan, which aimed to guide the area’s growth in a way that included public art and open space. At the center of the park is Cosmos, an 80-foot-tall steel sculpture by artist Aris Demetrios, installed in 1990 and donated by developer Angelo Tsakopoulos. “Many people assume the sculpture is a rose in honor of Roseville,” says Park Planning and Development Manager Tara Gee. “But the artist has said that it actually represents the cosmos, a symbol of unity and complexity in the universe.”
“We wanted this to be a place people would remember and use”
Nicholas G. Alexander, who was the project manager for the park at the time, said the park and sculpture were meant to serve as a visual landmark for the community. “We wanted this to be a place people would remember and use,” Alexander said. “Even the Automall started using it for directions.”
While the project did face criticism from some community members, the sculpture remained part of the plan and was approved by the City Council.
From the beginning, Sculpture Park wasn’t only about large-scale art. It was also a place to engage local students. “Starting in 1998, Roseville third and fourth graders were invited to participate in an annual art contest,” adds Tara. “Students created clay sculptures, usually themed around animals or flowers, and the winning entries were cast in bronze and displayed at the base of Cosmos.”
By the mid-2000s thieves began stealing the bronze art sculptures. By 2011, more than 30 of the student pieces had been taken. To prevent further damage, the city removed the remaining artwork and relocated them to the Maidu Museum & Historic Site for safekeeping.
A year later, the city introduced a new approach. In 2012, local fifth-grade students began creating mosaic tile artwork instead. These pieces allowed the park to continue its tradition of showcasing student work.
Today, Sculpture Park continues to serve as a small but meaningful part of Roseville’s public space. It connects to the Miner’s Ravine Bike Trail, making it a starting point for cyclists and walkers. While Cosmos remains the most visible feature, the park’s value comes from how it combines public art, student creativity and accessible natural areas.
It’s now recognized as part of the city’s landscape. It’s not just a place to pass by, it’s a place to stop, walk around and see how art and community come together in a beautiful, lasting way.
