Celebrating community, creativity and Cultural Arts Celebrating community, creativity and Cultural Arts

From vibrant murals and inspiring art installations to meaningful collaborations and programs, cultural arts in Roseville aims to foster creativity, inclusivity and a deep connection to the community.

“Our mission is to create opportunities where everyone in Roseville feels represented and celebrated,” shares Cultural Arts Supervisor Annie Stanco. “We want to provide spaces and experiences where people can engage with cultural programs, ask questions and feel safe exploring new perspectives.”

Recent projects include a mural in Royer Park, a bronze sculpture at Veterans Memorial Park and events that connect residents with traditions and stories. A key focus is ensuring these projects reflect authentic community input and inspire meaningful dialogue.

“Community members sharing their history and stories drive what we do,” Annie says. “Their voices help shape programs and art pieces that are both impactful and representative.”

Under the cultural arts umbrella is the Maidu Museum & Historic Site. The museum team works closely with the Native Advisory Committee and other organizations to honor Indigenous stories through art, exhibits and educational programs.

“Through the museum, we focus on creating authentic partnerships and experiences,” Annie explains. “It’s a place where community members can engage with Indigenous culture and history in meaningful ways.”

The museum is preparing to launch Museum Mornings, a program blending cultural education and themed crafts for young kids.

Other exciting new cultural arts projects are on the horizon, including public art installations at the Placer Valley Soccer Complex and two additional murals.

“It’s rewarding to see how art and culture can spark dialogue and create connections that resonate throughout the community.”

“Cultural arts have a universal power to bring people together,” Annie reflects. “It’s rewarding to see how art and culture can spark dialogue and create connections that resonate throughout the community.”

Maidu Regional Park Evolution of

A family walks along a trail, pausing to read pages from a storybook. This interactive StoryWalk® installation is the newest addition to Maidu Regional Park. It’s just one of the many ways the park continues to evolve to meet the needs and interests of Roseville residents.

Located in East Roseville, Maidu Regional Park spans 152 acres and has served as a city-wide recreational and cultural hub since the 1980s.

This flagship park, developed over decades to accommodate the growing needs of the community, is more than just a park—it’s a destination that honors both modern recreation and deep-rooted history.

The developed area, covering 54 acres, offers something for everyone. Anchored by the Maidu Community Center, the park also features the Maidu Library, a Veterans of the Korean War Memorial Rose Garden and the Maidu Museum & Historic Site, which shares the culture of the Nisenan Maidu people who originally inhabited the land and who the park is named after.

For children, the Western Town playground—a universally accessible play space designed to look like a classic old West town—is one of the most beloved features of the park.

As one of Roseville’s oldest parks, Maidu continues to see improvement, with recent updates including fencing around the soccer fields to protect the turf and help with maintenance and the skate park also received a few upgrades this past year.

Looking to the future, park development staff are exploring ways to make the park even better. Plans include repurposing the old batting cage area to make way for additional amenities, potentially a sixth soccer field and paving the parking lots by the soccer fields for improved accessibility.

With its blend of recreational amenities, cultural significance and community-focused improvements, Maidu Regional Park continues to be a beloved Roseville landmark, balancing tradition with the needs of a vibrant and growing community.

Building connections is at the heart of everything Park Planning & Development Manager Tara Gee does— whether she’s designing vibrant parks or playing in rhythm with her Taiko drumming group.

Getting in rhythm with teamwork and tradition Getting in rhythm with teamwork and tradition

Tara’s journey into Taiko began when her son left for college, giving her the time to pursue something she’d always been curious about. “I decided to do something for myself, so I joined Placer Ume Taiko,” she says. Taiko, which means “big drum” in Japanese, is an ancient art form historically used to signal weather changes or warn of danger. Today’s Taiko is a blend of rhythm, movement and energy.

“At work, I’m focused on planning and problem-solving. Taiko lets me use my brain in a completely different way.”

For Tara, Taiko is more than just music. It’s an experience that blends physical exertion, musicality and teamwork. “At work, I’m focused on planning and problem-solving. Taiko lets me use my brain in a completely different way. It’s great for stress relief—you get to bang on a drum—and it keeps me active and energized.”

The experience is also about teamwork. “To play well, our group need to be in sync,” she explains. With members ranging in age from 11 to 77, the group has built deep connections and lasting friendships.

Teaching Taiko has refined Tara’s skills and deepened her connection to the art form. “I’ve been told I make it look easy, but I work hard to make it that way,” she shares. Whether drumming at a church event or a local festival, she loves the positive community interactions Taiko fosters.

As a Chinese American, Tara also values sharing Japanese culture through Taiko. “It’s fun to bring people together and showcase something so dynamic and unique,” she says.

For Tara, Taiko isn’t just a hobby— it’s a celebration of community, culture and connection. And just like the parks she helps create; her drumming and passion for Taiko helps brings people together.
