Parks employee driven by passion & family Parks employee driven by passion & family

"It's the thrill, the adrenaline," says Parks Inspector Ray Molina. "It's why I race." Ray is a familiar face in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries department. He has worked in Parks for more than 16 years and enjoys his current role in Park Development.

But it’s what Ray does in his spare time that takes his love for competition and sports to a new level. One day, while taking kids to school, he stumbled upon the All-American Speedway in Roseville. Fascinated by the speed and camaraderie, he decided he wanted to get behind the wheel in the world of NASCAR's F4 division series.

"It's always fun to be competitive and win," Ray says with a smile. "Anyone can get out there, find their limits.”

The F4 series takes drivers on a high-octane journey around a short track, testing their skills and nerves with speeds reaching up to 70+ miles per hour.

Ray bought a car from a local driver and dove headfirst into the world of racing. “For me, the allure of cars packed together, side by side, and bumper to bumper is just irresistible,” he adds.

The first few years were a learning curve. After power steering failures and his car being pinned to the wall, Ray decided to take a break, but he just couldn’t stay away.

Following his return to the track eight years ago, Ray has won an impressive five championships. But racing isn't just about the thrill of victory; for him it's a family affair. With his son Matthew (who also works for parks) following in his footsteps, racing has become a bond between the two of them. Sharing the track with Matthew, they’re an impressive duo. "One year, we were racing together, and my car flipped over," Ray recalls. "Matthew stopped his car and came running over to make sure I was okay. I told him to get out there and win and he did. It was an emotional victory for both of us."

For Ray and his loved ones, racing isn't just a hobby—it's a way of life. With their team, fittingly named One Piece Racing, their goal is to bring their cars and themselves, back in one piece. "Racing has a huge family atmosphere," he reflects. "Everyone is willing to help each other, and you feel like you have someone to lean on."

Ray is also very encouraging to anyone who may be thinking about getting behind the wheel, “Just get in and do it, and don't be defeated. This is something that I don't ever think I will stop doing."

You can check Ray out on the track during the F4 season which runs from March through October.

Be prepared to weather the next storm

With seven creeks running through Roseville, every rainy season brings the potential for flooding.

Since historic floods in 1986 and 1995, Roseville along with FEMA, have invested $33 million to improve infrastructure, earning our city the nation’s highest flood protection rating.

Do your part to protect your family and property.

• Know your flood hazard. Learn if you’re at risk, visit roseville.ca.us/FloodZones, or call (916) 746-1300. Receive FEMA’s Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), regulated flood hazard areas, estimated depths of flooding for your property, and historic flood information.

• Insure your property. If your property is at risk, flood insurance is the best investment you can make. Roseville property owners receive up to a 45-percent discount. Ask your insurance agent if you are covered for flood damage.

• Protect your property. Reduce flooding hazards by keeping drainage areas free of debris.

• Plan for emergencies. Take steps to be prepared, like designating a family meeting place in case of an evacuation. Learn helpful flood emergency planning tips at roseville.ca.us/FloodPrep.

• Build wisely. Resilience begins with understanding your risk. Avoid building in flood prone areas. Contact the City before constructing. Codes and standards are enforced.

• Preserve natural floodplains. They’re nature’s way of accommodating excess water. Keep trash, large debris, and pollutants out of storm drainage systems and creeks.

• Sign up for Placer Alert. Visit placer-alert.org to be notified in an emergency.

THE MAKING OF THE MAIDU MUSEUM & HISTORIC SITE

Long before parks, subdivisions and shopping malls, the Roseville area was home to the Nisenan people. In the center of town lies a museum that recognizes their rich culture, history and contributions to our community - the Maidu Museum & Historic Site (MMHS) which sits on 34 acres of land in Maidu Regional Park.

The museum began to take shape in the 1960s when the City of Roseville stepped in to preserve their history by buying the land. In 1972, it earned a spot on the National Registry of Historic Places, protecting the Nisenan village site, which is filled with hundreds of native plants, bedrock mortars and rare petroglyphs.

In 1989, Roseville resident Myron Zents dedicated himself to sharing the story of this special place by giving tours of the historic site. Soon school kids were lining up to learn about the land's first people.

Marshall Wilkins, a devoted docent at MMHS, emphasizes the significance of the museum. "It gives Indigenous people and descendants a voice and visibility by not treating them as a thing of the past," he explains. "One of the exhibits is ‘Contemporary Maidu’, showing they continue to exist in our community and make contributions."

The term “Maidu” describes a language group that includes four different tribes: Mountain Maidu, Konkow Maidu, Mechoopda Maidu and Nisenan. The MMHS celebrates all four Maidu tribes. "The museum does a good job showing how they lived, worked and created, as well as the influence of those living and working around them," adds Marshall.

"In 1998, Roseville put $1.2 million toward building a museum, and in 2001, the Maidu Interpretive Center opened its doors," recounts Senior Interpretive Service Specialist Kaitlin Kincade. "It took a few more years before the museum opened its doors in 2010. Built in the shape of a Maidu roundhouse or kúm, it's been a hub for learning and discovery, attracting visitors from all over."

Today, the museum continues to evolve, with new exhibits, programs and events that celebrate the diverse voices and experiences of our community like the school tours, trail tours, campfire events, special Night Out at Museum programs. "I truly believe museums are centers of learning and community," says Kaitlin. "We learn from the past, and museums bring people together. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to learn something they can’t find anywhere else.”

"For me, the museum has been a place to feel, reflect and learn,” says Marshall. “In this spirit, I invite those who have walked or driven by the museum without visiting, to stop and explore this very special place.”

The Maidu Museum & Historic Site is located at 1970 Johnson Ranch Drive. Learn more about how you can support the museum by becoming a member at roseville.ca.us/museum
