Roseville PRL is one of the best in the country, for the third year in a row! Roseville PRL is one of the best in the country, for the third year in a row!
Roseville Parks, Recreation & Libraries (PRL) is thrilled to announce that it is a finalist for the prestigious National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. Roseville is one of only four finalists in the highly competitive population class of 150,001-400,000.
The National Gold Medal Awards, established in 1965, honor communities in the United States that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.
"Being named a finalist for the National Gold Medal Award for three consecutive years is a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence in parks and recreation. This achievement highlights the dedication of our staff, the support of our residents and the visionary leadership of our City Council. We are incredibly proud of our community and the high-quality services we provide," said City Manager Dominick Casey.
Parks, Recreation & Libraries Director Jill Geller added, “Bringing the National Gold Medal Award home to Roseville would be an incredible honor. It’s a way to express our gratitude to residents, acknowledge the exceptional City leadership and celebrate the hard work and achievements of our staff.”
Judges for the National Gold Medal are selected for their extensive experience and knowledge in parks and recreation at both local and national levels. The winners will be announced at the 2024 National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Annual Conference in October.
Roseville PRL manages 87 developed parks, over 300 acres of street landscaping, three libraries, three pools, two golf courses, a Native American museum and 23 Adventure Club sites for before and after school childcare. It also oversees nearly 4,000 acres of open space and preserves, accounting for almost 15% of the entire city.
The Gold Medal Awards are presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the NRPA. Roseville previously won the Gold Medal Award in 1972.

Library Tech Library Tech
In a quiet corner of the city library in Maidu Regional Park sits Molly Knox, a Library Technician whose calm demeanor contradicts her extraordinary past. With her gentle smile and unassuming presence, you’d never know that this very same woman once blazed trails as a competitive ultra runner, conquering distances that most people would never even dream of attempting. “I started running when I was 25,” Molly recalls. “My first marathon was in San Diego. I ran casually after that, but it wasn’t until 2012 that I took on my first Western States.” The Western States Endurance Run, a grueling 100-mile race through the Sierra Nevada, is a pinnacle event in the ultra-running world, and for Molly, it was just the beginning.
“I believe most people can do anything; you just have to do the work”
Molly’s journey into ultra running began almost by accident. “I got started after I overheard two women talking about a race called Western States. I went home and googled it and thought, ‘I can do this,’ and two years later, I did. I believe most people can do anything; you just have to do the work.”
And work she did. Molly’s training regimen was nothing short of incredible, running 80-100 miles a week until 2022. She competed in over six ultra marathons, with three of them covering at least 100 miles. Among her remarkable achievements was the Way Too Cool 50K, where she finished 11th in 4 hours and 40 minutes, and the AR 50, a 50-mile race which she completed in 8 hours, securing a top 10 finish.
Her crowning achievement, however, came in 2018 at the One Day in Auburn race. This unique event challenges participants to run as far as they can in 24 hours. Molly not only won the race but set a course record (which she still holds today) by covering an astonishing 125 miles. “When I’m challenged, nothing is out of my reach,” she says. “I hear about something or see something, and I know nothing is impossible.”
Molly’s determination saw her tackle the infamous HURT 100 in Hawaii, a race known for its treacherous terrain. “It’s five loops in the jungle – the terrain is so technical you almost look at parts and cry,” she recounts with a laugh. Yet, it was these very challenges that fueled her passion and drive.
Despite her numerous accolades and the sponsorships that brought her topof-the-line shoes and clothing, Molly’s favorite memory isn’t about a medal or a record. It’s about family. “One of my favorite moments was when my teenage son was allowed to run the last 7 miles of Western States with me. That was my favorite finish… getting to cross the finish line with him.” Her eyes light up as she speaks, reflecting the deep bond she shares with her family, who have always been her biggest supporters.
In 2022, Molly decided to hang up her competitive running shoes and channel her energy into her work at the library. “I did all the things I wanted to do,” she says. Today, she still runs for fitness, covering 20-25 miles a week and walking every day on her lunch break.
For Molly, running will always be a part of her life, a testament to her belief that with determination, anything is possible. And as she shelves books and assists library patrons, she carries with her the spirit of an ultra-runner – quiet, steadfast and always moving forward.

The Park Development Team dreams big
When you head to your local park, you’re probably thinking about the playground, grass, trees and sports courts. Before any of that existed, the Park Development Team started with a plan. “Our team are the dreamers who play a pivotal role in enhancing the community’s quality of life through planning, design and construction of parks and recreational areas,” says Park Planning & Development Manager Tara Gee. This dedicated team of eight is made up of Landscape Architects, Project Managers, Park Inspectors and a Customer Service Specialist. They are instrumental in ensuring that Roseville’s parks not only meet current needs but also anticipate future growth and community demands.
“Our small but mighty team is dedicated to making Roseville a more beautiful and safer place to live”
This involves determining the number, location and size of various types of parks, including neighborhood parks, school-parks, city-wide parks and open spaces. By integrating parks into new developments, they ensure that all residents have access to green spaces that promote wellbeing, a high quality of life and community engagement. Collaborating with city departments and developers, they strategically plan parks like the new soccer complex that’s being built in West Roseville, ensuring it fits seamlessly into the community. Their role extends to major rehabilitation
projects, like the Weber Park and Johnson Pool renovations, ensuring older parks and pools remain vibrant and safe. “Our small but mighty team is dedicated to making Roseville a more beautiful and safer place to live,” adds Tara. They manage development agreements, financial planning and land transfers to secure and allocate resources effectively.
And the work doesn’t stop there, they engage in public outreach to gather community input, create master plans and oversee construction from bidding to completion. Their jobs are about crafting environments where memories are made, and the community thrives. Every park they create or revitalize is a testament to their commitment to a greener, healthier and more connected Roseville.

HONORING OUR HEROES: Veterans Memorial Park and Veterans Memorial Park North
It began as a vision shared by the Roseville Historical Society and local Veterans groups. These organizations, united by a deep respect for the sacrifices made by Veterans, created a lasting tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. and Allied Armed Forces with the dedication of Veterans Memorial Park and Veterans Memorial Park North.
The project began with the creation of Veterans Memorial Park, completed in 1999. Local veterans played a crucial role in naming the park, ensuring it honored the brave souls who fought for freedom. The park dedication featured a military band, dignitaries and veterans in full regalia.
“It was an honor to dedicate a park for Veterans, recognizing their sacrifice to this nation,” says Park Planning & Development Manager Tara Gee. “I’m grateful that we were able to do that.”
Separated only by a creek, an extension of Veterans Memorial Park began to take shape. It was only fitting that this new addition would be named Veterans Memorial Park North, symbolizing its connection to the original park. Developed at a different time, Veterans Memorial Park North was completed in 2005. The park’s dedication ceremony mirrored the grandeur of the first, reinforcing the community’s commitment to honoring its heroes.
As time passed, the memorial tree grove was replanted and new features were added, including flagpoles donated by Veterans groups, proudly displaying the MIA, Veterans and U.S. Flags. The Memorial Tree Grove of Honor became a focal point, with a Brick Walk of Honor added the following year, offering the community a way to participate in honoring their heroes through donations.
“The California State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution added a Rose Garden to Veterans Park North in 2021 and this year they donated a memorial bench,” adds Parks Manager Brian Castelluccio. “We are also working on replacing the plaques that will have the names of people being honored with a tree in our Memorial Tree Grove.” The park continues to evolve, and last Veterans Day, a bronze Poppy art piece was unveiled, featuring the poignant words of the “In Flanders Fields” poem, further cementing the park’s role as a place of remembrance and reflection.
Veterans Memorial Park and Veterans Memorial Park North are now beloved neighborhood parks, each featuring a variety of amenities including ball fields, picnic areas, playgrounds and soccer fields. A trail connection between the two parks allows for exploration, and the parks serve as a starting point for miles of walking and bike paths.
Today, both parks are not just places of recreation but a place where history is preserved, and the legacy of those who served is celebrated. Through ongoing donations and community efforts, these parks continue to grow and thrive, ensuring that the stories of our veterans live on for generations to come.
If you’re interested in donating a tree or brick in a Veteran’s honor visit roseville.ca.us/communitygifts.
