Summer Solstice

This year the Summer Solstice, commonly referred to as the longest day of the year, is June 20. It is the day of the year with the most sunlight. Scientifically it is the moment during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest north in the Northern Hemisphere. In fact, there are two Summer Solstices in a year. The second occurs in December in the Southern Hemisphere. Lest we forget when it is summer here, it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. So, if you are planning a vacation in New Zealand, Australia, the Panama Canal, or any Southern Hemisphere destination, plan accordingly!

What to Do When You Have a Heart Attack and You Are Alone

All of a sudden you are experiencing chest pains. They are starting to radiate in the arm and jaw. It feels like being stabbed in the chest and heart. A person who is feeling weak and whose heart is beating hard has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness. You can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very strongly! Take deep breaths before every cough. Coughing should be repeated every second until you reach the hospital or until your heart starts to beat normally.

Deep breathing gives oxygen to your lungs and coughing movements boost the heart and blood circulation. Heart pressure also helps to restore a normal heartbeat. This procedure could allow a cardiac arrest victim to make it to the hospital or until EMTs arrive for proper treatment.

For Women: Women have additional and different symptoms. Rarely do they experience crushing chest pain or pain in the arms. Women often have indigestion and tightness across the back at the bra line and in addition, sudden fatigue.

Cardiologists claim that sharing this message with 10 people will save 1 life.

This information was provided by Brenda Allison who is employed by Grossmont Hospital.
