The Lighthouse

Chairman’s Message A warm welcome to all Lighthouse Club members, and all others in our construction industry reading this magazine, wherever you may be. From the UK to the Middle East, from Asia to New Zealand, and beyond, our wonderful Lighthouse Clubs around the world exist, because of you. If you are not yet a member, it’s simple to join via our website, www.lighthouseclubintl.com, or via your local Lighthouse Club. Lighthouse Club International (LHCI) is the umbrella organization that acts as a coordinating body for Lighthouse Club branches. Please liaise with your local Lighthouse Club branch committee members to find out more about the role of Lighthouse Club International and what it means to you for your local and international activities and do pass on any feedback and queries – it’s your club! Many of us reading this magazine are fortunate to have stable incomes, enjoy good health and future prospects as a result of our connection with the construction industry. At this time of year, most especially, we think of those less fortunate. Please consider donating to the Lighthouse Club’s charities via your local branch or the LHCI website (as above). The Lighthouse Club continues to support multiple causes for construction industry employees and their families. This includes financial aid to victims of construction industry accidents and their families, educational assistance, and assistance with medical and hospitalisation costs for those without adequate medical insurance. Further assistance is also provided in the form of sponsored days out for the affected families. The work of the charities and the additional support in the form of events and sponsorships is only achievable through the generosity of our members and income generated from the addition of new members. Please contact Lighthouse Club International or your local Lighthouse Club branch to find out more about how you can help. A couple of reminders: • Don’t forget to book your place for the Lighthouse Club International Construction Conference Design for Safety and Collaborative Contracting to deliver Safer, Sustainable Infrastructure Projects on Time and within Budget, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre Wednesday, 17th January 2024. • Also, note that the deadline for entries for this year’s International Design for Safety Competition is 20th January 2024. Construction industry fellowship and networking remains the focus of our Lighthouse Clubs, with charitable activities undertaken where permitted by local jurisdictions. Please enjoy reading this magazine, share it with your industry colleagues, and check out the events advertised on your local branch website, social media, and/or our official international website. A big thank you to all our supporters and contributors. On behalf of the Lighthouse Club, we bring you Seasons Greeting and wish you all a very happy, prosperous, healthy and safe 2024! Robert Gordon Chairman, Lighthouse Club International

Initially, there were concerns about the feasibility of the activity due to extreme weather conditions that persisted until midnight on 8 September. Fortunately, the weather improved and traffic had gradually returned to normal by the morning of 9 September. Despite some disruptions to railway services, a total of 9 families, comprising 26 family members, gathered at the Cup Noodle Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui. At the Museum, all participants had the opportunity to engage in various activities such as making their own noodles, designing their own cups, selecting toppings, and observing the noodlemaking process. It was an enjoyable experience, full of fun, especially for the children who were able to take home their uniquely designed cup noodles. Following the museum visit, a buffet lunch was arranged at Three on Canton. During the lunch, the families participated in a fun quiz for which they received prizes. Afterwards, each FSE/ LHC volunteer accompanied each family unit to explore the Hong Kong Palace Museum which is located at the western tip of the West Kowloon Cultural District. The museum features seven galleries showcasing over 900 priceless treasures from the Palace Museum. Many of these treasures were being exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time, including items that have never been displayed to the public before. Our wonderful day concluded at 5 pm and all the families had thoroughly enjoyed the activities throughout. It was a very successful event that brought joy and unforgettable moments to all of the children and families involved. Grateful thanks to FSE Engineering Group and the volunteers of Lighthouse Club Hong Kong Branch Benevolent Fund Committee.

BUILDING A MORE INCLUSIVE FUTURE Leighton Asia leading the way in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the construction industry The construction industry, long perceived as a male-dominated field, is experiencing a profound transformation. As the world recognises the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in all sectors, the construction industry is no exception. In a recent interview, Lighthouse Club had the opportunity to speak with three prominent voices from Leighton Asia’s Women in Construction and Engineering Group (WOICE). Victoria Crasti, Chief Financial Officer and Human Resources of Leighton Asia, and Co-chairs of WOICE Johanny Pérez D’Oleo and Diana Hutchinson who are Project Planning Manager and Assistant Bid Manager of Leighton Asia, shared their perspectives on how the industry is evolving and how the company is leading the construction industry on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

regions, so everyone accepts that diversity is a part of the company. As a result, a sensitivity to the importance of the diverse cultures and backgrounds of our people is rooted in the company.” Crasti went on to highlight the business case for diversity in the construction industry. “Diverse teams are more innovative, more adaptable, and ultimately more successful,” she notes. “By embracing diversity and inclusion, we not only reflect the communities we serve but also gain a competitive advantage.” Pérez D’Oleo agrees and adds that diversity enhances decision making processes by reducing groupthink and bringing fresh perspectives to the table. “In construction, where problem solving is a daily requirement, diverse teams are better equipped to find creative solutions,” she says. “We recognise that diversity is our strength.”

The business case for diversity

Empowering women in construction

Crasti says that being a multinational company, diversity aspects such as culture, religion and race are naturally embedded into Leighton’s ethos. “We have people constantly moving between

successfully established diversity and social inclusion policies. Crasti points to gender and national diversity being key topics for senior management when completing monthly statistical reviews for each project. “We have moved beyond the perception that construction is solely a male domain. Today, we see an increasing number of women taking on important roles in various aspects of the industry,” she states. “Leighton Asia founded WOICE in 2021 with the aim of driving gender diversity in our workplace. WOICE is dedicated to empowering women in construction and engineering roles,” explains Hutchinson. “We provide a platform for our people to connect, share their thoughts and a network of support and guidance,” she explains. Pérez D’Oleo says, “WOICE is not a female-only group, we have representatives of both gender from project sites, offices and functions in the Company to work together towards a more diverse future for our industry. It’s not actually about gender, it’s about diversity in general.”

WOICE’s objectives include enhancing female representation by retaining and attracting female talent both within the Company and the construction industry, fostering inclusive and supporting working environment that enables female talent to learn, share and flourish, as well as providing training sessions and awareness campaigns to promote gender equality. It is through these efforts that groups like WOICE can work to break down stereotypes and create and environments where everyone, regardless of gender or nationality, feels valued and can thrive. At Leighton Asia, a number of initiatives have been implemented to ensure a working environment for their people to feel safe, confident and welcome at work and have a positive social impact on the local community and industry. One of the examples is the launch of the first female-fit trousers for all Leighton Asia construction projects in Hong Kong Female-fit trouser

in October 2022. While universally sized personal protective equipment is typical across the engineering and construction industries in the Asian region, Leighton Asia provides proper fitting trousers that are specifically tailored to fit the female body shape for their female employees to ensure the right level of comfort and safety. Challenges and progress While progress has been made, challenges remain, with attracting talent into the industry the greatest challenge. “If only 5% of females are doing an engineering degree, how do you achieve a net ratio of 50% female in your organisation when the talent pool is so small?” asks Crasti. “I think that's one thing but to retain talent, all the flexibility, initiatives and awareness is really essential.”

International Women's Day celebration in Hong Kong

To encourage the younger generation to create a pipeline for the future, in 2023, Leighton Asia launched a new initiative, a mentoring program. It is aimed at nurturing talent within the company and has a target of 50/50 male to female ratio. What the company attempts to do is very collaborative. It’s not just targeted towards females, but by doing the 50% gender mix when the company doesn’t have that overall gender rate, Leighton Asia is targeting another level of the females to develop them and to try and bring them into management. They are optimistic about the industry’s ability to overcome diversity challenges.

International Women's Day celebration in India

“We’ve seen a growing commitment from both companies and individuals in creating a more inclusive industry,” says Hutchinson. “It’s heartening to see that change is happening, even if it’s incremental. It's more about making everyone in our organisation aware of what we want to achieve, giving them the tools, giving them awareness, because I think a lot of it is an awareness to begin with.” Hutchinson continues to say, WOICE has been actively working on industry advocacy and collaborations with various institutions and industry organisations to promote and encourage females into construction and engineering. Pérez D’Oleo says, "Recently more industry events are being held on diversity and inclusion that lead to more awareness as currently WOICE committee discusses the plan and action plans in monthly meeting

diversity feels like a hot topic or buzzword, this is a good thing because it's getting momentum and hopefully, in few years, it's not going to be something trending, it's going to be just part of how we work." Regional Benefits and Allies in Construction Pérez D’Oleo adds, “We are working together as an industry. We are learning and seeing how we can implement new initiatives, and there are forums, for example, the Lighthouse Club Women in Construction Group providing a platform to discuss about these issues. It’s key to have management support on these issues, like ours. I can knock on the door but if no-one opens the door, then everything will stop.” Hutchinson states, “The benefit we have as an international organisation is that we can also learn from other countries on what our other business units are doing, not just from Hong Kong.” She adds that companies should learn from each other. “By seeing what other people are doing, we learn what can be done.”

The Future Pérez D’Oleo says “Even though there's still a long way to go, it's important to understand that we all have a role to play to improve the situation. As a company we can do many things, but it also requires collective efforts from other companies within the industry, as well as organisations and other entities related to the industry to all do their part.” She adds that this is how she sees the reality of moving towards a much more diverse, and inclusive working environment. “We should continue to learn from each other and to work on increasing awareness to fill the gap in terms of what people believe is needed across organisations.” Crasti agrees and emphasises that other than changing mindsets, it will require a cultural shift and acknowledging the problems of a shortage of skilled labour generally and the lack of females at sites and in various trades, to hopefully create a greater momentum for change in the coming years. “We do believe that having that role model is key, and it's important to inspire what we can do today and tomorrow. That’s why what our Company and WOICE have been doing is significant: by offering support and opportunities on female career development, accessibility and participation as well as a seat at the table, for any conversation and discussion, one can be inspired and continue to inspire others knowing that we, as part of the industry and community, can work together to break down barriers and foster gender equality, diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

Arup marks its 20th anniversary in Macau with a cocktail reception, highlighting collaboration and envisioning a more sustainable future for the city within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The event, held at MGM Cotai in October, gathered 180 esteemed guests from Macau and other major cities in the GBA. The evening was a robust exploration of Macau’s strategic position within the GBA, shedding light on the integral role of the built environment industry in further driving the city’s socio-economic development. It also emphasised the potential of the GBA and the opportunities it presents for further progression. In the spirit of collaboration, the event provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to establish partnerships that will propel Macau’s further development and integration with the GBA.

Shaping a world-class tourism destination Arup’s journey in Macau started with Sands Macao, the city’s first foreign entertainment development. Since then, it has delivered numerous large-scale resorts including the Venetian Macao, The Londoner Macao and the Galaxy Macau. One of the recent resorts that Arup has contributed is The Londoner Macao. The firm’s structural and fire teams were instrumental in the extensive remodelling of the Sands Cotai, including the stunning Crystal Palace, the western façade, the 96m high Elizabeth Tower and the 6,000-seat Londoner Arena. Arup’s contributions included designing a new 300m long façade and providing fire safety consultancy

infrastructure initiatives, spanning from tunnels and rails to roads and bridges. These projects have notably enhanced urban mobility and fostering meaningful social and economic connections.

Meanwhile, Arup also leverages its innovative engineering design to support the development of a series of cultural and leisure projects, providing technical specialist services such as fire engineering, acoustics and security. This not only enhances the city’s liveability but also drives its rapid transition from a national to an international tourist destination, injecting vitality into the community and economic development.

Arup has been involved in the design consulting for multiple light rail lines in Macau, including the feasibility study and detailed design of the Seac Pai Van Line. More recently, they are providing total design services for the LRT East Line south section which will include the construction of a large-diameter single bore subsea tunnel – a first in Macau and the project’s most technically challenging aspect.

Improving urban connectivity

In addition to rail development, Arup is providing project management, cost management and site supervision consultancy Arup’s services and project portfolios have expanded and diversified services for the 4th Macau-Taipa Bridge. This new vehicular significantly over the years. The firm has provided design, crossing will link the Macau Peninsula and Taipa, further engineering and transport planning services for a vast array of improving the city’s connectivity.

Arup is not only shaping Macau’s physical cityscape, but also its future. The firm is at the forefront of driving the city’s sustainable urban development. In line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, Arup has formulated a masterplan for the whole Macau. This forward-looking strategy aims to transform Macau into a happy, smart, sustainable and resilient city over the coming decades, maxismising value for clients, the community and the environment.

Strengthening Macau’s position in the GB In recent years, Arup’s involvement in cross-boundary facilities and cooperation zones has facilitated Macau’s integration into the GBA, unleashing opportunities for regional synergy and cooperation. One of the most striking projects that demonstrates this is the 55km-long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. This engineering marvel was realised by the collaborative efforts of Arup’s designers, engineers, planners, and consultants from nine offices across 14 diverse disciplines. They were heavily involved in various aspects of this mega project and associated works, including preliminary and detailed design for the Macau Link Road, as well as the infrastructure works for the Macau Boundary Crossing Facilities. In a joint venture with China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group, Arup also carried out a multidisciplinary detailed design consultancy for the 3.3km Hengqin extension. This extension will link Macau’s light rail network to the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity

Looking ahead Arup’s incredible journey in Macau is a testament to the power of collaboration and visionary thinking. The firm’s total design approach, coupled with a deep understanding of the local context, has enabled it to deliver projects that have not only met the city’s needs but also enhanced its regional and global standings. With a focus on sustainable urban development enabled by digital technoloty, Arup is well-positioned to continue to play a crucial role in the city’s ongoing evolution. “We look forward to continued collaboration with our clients and partners to capture the enormous opportunities presented by the GBA development, particularly in the fields of transport, city planning and design, digital innovation, climate resilience and sustainability. BIM--driven Integrated Solutions:

The Key to a Safer, More Productive, and More Sustainable Construction

In managing complex construction projects, the key is to find a game-changing solution that can be implemented in every stage. Hilti, a global leader in construction solutions, is revolutionising the way construction projects are managed with its Integrated Project Solutions (IPS). IPS is a comprehensive suite of services that combines engineering expertise, pre-fabrication, advanced logistics, jobsite automation and digital solutions to help construction projects be safer, more productive, and more sustainable. As a solution, the IPS can help manage issues such as space constraints, loading conditions and the application of relevant building codes to any particular projects, resulting in better coordination, improved scheduling, as well as better cost and quality control for customers.

created to streamline these processes, improving productivity and cost-effectiveness. At the end of the day, our goal is to give our customers the flexibility needed to adapt to project changes and minimise downtime, ensuring smooth project execution,” says Sam Keung, Head of Engineering of Hilti Asia.

The Safer, Smarter, and Sustainable Way to Build

Safety is paramount in any construction project, and Hilti's IPS focuses on creating the platform for safer working environments. Providing customers with expert guidance, advanced tools, and digital services, the IPS helps minimise risk factors and potential hazards on job sites.

Say goodbye to construction delays and cost overruns

To begin the workflow, Hilti will provide customers Integrated Design Services with 3D visualisations. Paired with expert engineering support and advanced modelling of MEP installations through industry-compliant Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, this initial phase of the IPS focuses on material and time optimisation.

The IPS will then begin pre-fabrication services, enabling precise manufacturing of components off-site which are carried out by specialists in Prefabrication Centers. This allows Hilti to deliver pre-assembled key materials and components to not only save time, but also reduce material wastage. “Traditional construction methods often face challenges such as material surpluses or shortages, or perhaps come across complexities when coordinating assemblies and installations on the jobsite. With such issues, Hilti's IPS was

During the planning phase of Merck's newest location in Darmstadt, using Hilti's IPS helped the company save up to 50% less materials and reduce CO2 emissions by 120 tons.

“One of the ways the IPS mitigates construction-related risks for our clients is through the timely delivery of the right materials. Another tool that we offer to significantly help reduce jobsite risk and ease labour shortages is the Jaibot Drilling Robot. With its expertise in repetitive and precise drilling work, the autonomous robot can be employed to take on jobs in dangerous parts of construction, which can help contribute to a safer and more productive project. Overall, we have designed all our offerings with safety in mind,” continued Sam Keung, Head of Engineering of Hilti Asia. When it comes to sustainability, Hilti is fully committed to furthering their customers’ sustainability ambitions. Through the IPS, customers have access to experts and resources that can help assess projects in terms of environmental performance, and then execute them. A great example of how the IPS can help customers reduce their environmental impact can be seen in its recent partnership with Merck.

To accomplish this, Hilti's team of project managers, lead engineers, and modelers used BIM methodology to create a digital twin of the project, which allowed them to predict and rectify overlaps of different trades during the planning phase. Combined with the transparency of their products’ carbon footprint and the accuracy from the BIM material list, the IPS resulted in Merck having a more efficient use of their materials, as well as a significant reduction in construction waste during the project’s execution. Overall, the IPS is a comprehensive solution that can help construction projects be safer, more productive, and more sustainable. To experience the transformative power of the Integrated Project Solutions and elevate construction projects to new heights of safety and productivity, visit Hilti's website or contact their dedicated team of experts.

The Annual Ball, a hallmark event for our members, not only marked a resounding success but also created indelible memories for all who attended. The night unfolded as a celebration of unity within the construction industry, showcasing the strength of our network and our shared commitment to giving back. Held at the elegant Rizal Ballroom in Makati Shangri-la, the event embraced the theme "Building a Stronger Tomorrow: A Filipiniana Tribute to Construction Excellence." The heartwarming affair served a dual purpose, doubling as a powerful fundraiser for our charitable causes, particularly our impactful scholarship program. The evening featured a moving video where our scholars expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support they receive. Their stories served as a poignant reminder of the profound impact our collective efforts can have on individual lives and futures. The event also spotlighted the pivotal role played by our scholars and alumni, who showcased their talents and dedication throughout the evening.

Hong Kong WIC balancing Work, Life & Play

A

nother incredible event was hosted by Women in Construction along with WOICE- Leighton. Diana Hutchison of Leighton Asia did and incredible job as a moderator and our stellar panelists Yahamali Wijesinghe of Hilti Asia, Victoria Crasti of Leighton Asia and Suri Khadka of BM Human Resources and Construction Ltd. shared their thoughts on life work and the act of balancing it all. The discussion started with what does work life balance actually means and if it is achievable in today’s world. The panelist shared their stories, some personal, and stressed the importance of being organized, scheduling and realizing sometimes works takes precedence and sometimes life takes over and that it is all ok. The night also touched on the importance of primary caregiver leave, work flexibility and how the traditional gender roles are being challenged or change. The general theme for the night was the importance of flexible working hours and making the transition back into the work place for a new mother, easier. The Lighthouse Club would like to thank all the panelists, Leighton for the drinks and nibbles and everyone who contributed to organizing another fantastic, thought-provoking event.
