Chairman’s Message

Chairman’s Message written by the Chairman Elect, Bert de Munck, Lighthouse Club Manila

Welcome to the Q2 Edition of the Lighthouse Club Magazine.

This issue shines a spotlight on the 25th anniversary of Lighthouse Club Singapore, a fantastic milestone for one of our vibrant branches. I want to offer my warmest congratulations to the committee and members of Lighthouse Club Singapore for their dedication and hard work in building such a strong and active community over the past 25 years. It is inspiring to see our regional branches reaching new heights, with more anniversaries on the horizon in 2025 and 2026.

Across the globe, Lighthouse Clubs continue to grow and evolve. While it is easier in some regions where construction is booming, everywhere our branches are working hard to promote fellowship and provide charitable support within the industry. Even if there is no local branch in your country of residence, I warmly invite you to join Lighthouse Club International and be part of this growing network.

A key priority for all clubs is bringing in a mix of newer members and future leaders, people ready to take the helm in the coming years and bring fresh ideas. It is encouraging to see branches like Singapore actively engaging these members to ensure their continued success.

I am also delighted to see the Hong Kong Golden Helmet and Safety Leadership Awards featured again. Safety and health remain important priorities for many branches, not only on construction sites but also in design and mental health, which is gaining more attention across the network. It would be great to see similar awards introduced in more countries in the years ahead.

As we move through spring and into summer (at least on this side of the equator), let us remember that while some parts of the world enjoy sunshine, others are bracing for rain and typhoons. The infrastructure we create continues to shape our communities and livelihoods every day.

Here is to another season of growth, fellowship and giving back.

About The Lighthouse Club

“The Lighthouse” is the magazine of Lighthouse Club International, originally established in 1998 as Lighthouse Club Asia Pacific Region and superseded in November 2017 by Lighthouse Club International. With its roots in England in 1956, the Hong Kong Branch was formed in 1986.

The aims of the Lighthouse Club are to promote good fellowship amongst its members who work in or are associated with the construction industry and to provide charitable assistance to those in need within the construction industry and to their dependents in qualifying cases.

In addition to the charitable works of the individual branches of the Lighthouse Club, Lighthouse Club International supports two related Hong Kong based charities which provide charitable assistance internationally. The James Battersby Lighthouse Club Educational Trust which provides assistance for education and training to qualifying young persons in the Asia Pacific Region; The Lighthouse Club International Benevolent Trust which provides assistance to relieving poverty and financial support to persons currently or previously employed in the building and civil engineering and allied trades

FAY SIU ON CHANGING SAFETY CULTURE FROM THE GROUND UP Leading with Heart:

A Personal Mission in a High-Risk Industry

Winner of the 2025 Golden Helmet Award, Fay Siu reflects on her unwavering mission to protect workers, reshape safety education, and inspire a future where care and responsibility take centre stage.

I’m incredibly honoured to receive this recognition from the Lighthouse Club. Though I often say I’m an outsider in the construction industry, many of the industrial accidents I handle happen in this space, which has drawn me into its spotlight. Still, I’ve never considered myself separate—I’m a stakeholder too. This award feels like an important affirmation of years spent advocating for safety and dignity in the workplace.

For the Labor Rights Association and my team, this recognition is deeply encouraging. In the aftermath of serious accidents, my colleagues are at the hospital or on-site within hours, often working late into the night. We give up family time, personal moments, and rest to support affected workers and their families. My team never complains. They show up with compassion day after day. I’m grateful their dedication is now seen and acknowledged. This award isn’t just mine—it belongs to them, too.

From Corporate Life to Advocacy After Loss

My journey hasn’t been a straight path. I studied Social Policy and Administration at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and started my career in the corporate sector. It was a conventional route, one that offered stability and structure, but I couldn’t ignore the pull toward social advocacy. That pull grew stronger each time I heard of a worker injured or a family torn apart by an accident. I knew I wanted to do more.

In 2009, I joined the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims. In those early days, we focused on providing frontline support—visiting hospitals, talking to grieving families, and helping them navigate difficult legal and bureaucratic systems. Each case brought heartbreak, and each one raised the same agonising question: why did this happen, and why does it keep happening?

Things took a decisive turn after the sudden passing of our former Chief Executive, Mr. Chan Kam-Hong, in 2019. His mentorship and fearless dedication to justice

left a deep impression on me. Losing him so suddenly was painful, but it also marked a turning point. I had to step up—and quickly. With that, my focus started shifting from responding to accidents to preventing them altogether.

Education Before Accidents: A New Approach to Safety

One thing became increasingly clear: you can’t build a genuine safety culture through slogans or annual campaigns. Safety needs to be understood, lived, and internalised. It has to be taught—seriously and consistently—starting from a young age. That’s when we started moving away from “safety promotion” and towards “safety education.” It’s more than just a change in words. It’s a commitment to long-term, generational change.

With the generous support of Dr. David Mong, we began a collaboration with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre in 2021. It was bold and unconventional— transforming real-life accident cases into dramatic plays performed for students and trainees across

Awards That’s when we started moving away from “safety promotion” and towards “safety education.” It’s more than just a change in words. It’s a commitment to long-term, generational change.

Hong Kong. At first, some questioned the approach. But the results spoke for themselves. Audiences were moved, engaged, and most importantly, they remembered the stories.

We’re now taking those stories even further converting them into multimedia training materials, animated lessons, and even storybooks for children. Our belief is simple: the seeds of safety awareness should be planted in kindergarten, nurtured in school, and reinforced through life. That’s how we build a culture—not just a campaign.

Systemic Change Takes Courage

Our vision for safety goes beyond education—it’s also about policy. We’ve been advocating for the publication of accident investigation reports to ensure transparency and learning. We push for reform in compensation laws, including recognising overwork as a legitimate workplace hazard. And we’ve submitted proposals to make safety education a formal part of the school curriculum.

Each of these policy goals stems from the same core belief: that systemic change requires public pressure, political will, and persistent advocacy. It’s not easy work. Bureaucracy moves slowly. But we persist because we’ve seen what’s at stake. Every time there’s an accident, families are devastated, livelihoods lost, and trust broken. Our work is about making sure those losses lead to meaningful reform.

Bridging the Gap Between Policy and People

One challenge I encounter repeatedly is the disconnect between what’s written on paper and what happens on the ground. Policies can look sound, even progressive, but if they’re not implemented effectively—if the people they’re meant to protect don’t understand them or feel empowered to act—then we’ve failed.

That’s why I’ve made it my mission to reach both ends of the spectrum. I speak to policymakers and frontline workers alike. I want to make safety something that lives in everyday decisions, not just in legal documents or annual reports. Since 2019, I’ve been speaking publicly about individual responsibility in safety culture. I want people to understand that safety isn’t just the boss’s job or the government’s concern. It’s everyone’s concern.

Something as simple as reminding a colleague to wear proper gear, reporting a cracked scaffold, or even asking, “Is this safe?” can save lives. But people are often afraid—afraid of retaliation, of being labelled a troublemaker, of rocking the boat. My goal is to create a culture where speaking up is seen as strength, not defiance.

A Legacy Rooted in Empathy

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have mentors and supporters who’ve shaped how I lead and advocate— people like Victor Kwong, Ada Fung, and Jonnie Leung. Their encouragement reminds me that safety work is never solitary; it’s deeply collaborative. It’s built on shared knowledge, trust, and the will to keep going, even when progress feels slow.

To the next generation of safety professionals, I have one question: why does this work matter to you? If it’s about ticking boxes or filing reports, the work will never truly resonate. But if it’s rooted in care—in the desire to protect people, to preserve families, to prevent grief—then you’ll find resilience and purpose.

Safety isn’t just compliance—it’s a reflection of who we are and how we value each other. And when that belief takes root across a workforce, a company, an industry, then we’re not just changing policies—we’re transforming culture.

Fay has been challenging the industry, institutions, contractors and workers to improve conditions and stop needless accidents. She has done this with a unique and insightful presentation on a typical Hong Kong shop fit-out project, often associated as an unsafe working space, asking her audience questions such as, “Will you just walk by and later report to the Labour Department? Or will you get involved and have a safety conversation with the workers to help improve the safety culture?”

The Derek Smyth Safety Leadership Awards

The Club started the Safety Leadership Awards in 2010 and renamed its Awards after Mr. Derek Smyth passed away in 2014.

The awards recognize both organizations and individuals that successfully place health and safety at the very top of their agendas; that demonstrate leadership in the industry; and, also demonstrate leadership from their senior people.

Lighthouse Club Singapore

- How we started

In 1999 a pro tem committee started to meet to form a Lighthouse Club in Singapore. The committee comprised Willie Kay (President), Roger Mitchell (Secretary), Eric Yeo, Tony Quek (Treasurer), Honey Lim, Bob Batcher and Cheong Ying Wah (Vice President). Other initial members were Steven Ng (Assistant Secretary), Stephen Whiffen, Brian Radley, Charles Allen, Nigel Schofield and Colin Thoms.

By December 1999, approval for registration of the Lighthouse Club (Singapore) as a Society was received from the local authorities. In early 2000 about 50 people were "recruited" as members and on 14 April the official opening/inaugural meeting was held at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club which was attended by over 100 people, including John Battersby and Trevor Gregory from Lighthouse Club Asia Pacific Region (APR), the forerunner to Lighthouse Club International. Being a particularly warm evening, it was clear that certain officials needed to cool off, especially after some particularly generous donations were received from those attending. A total of SG$ 2,221 is recorded as having been raised, which just goes to show that people will pay for anything after a few drinks!

One of the first benevolence cases of the newly-formed Club was the Teo Lee Peng Welfare Fund to help two daughters of Mr Teo who died in a road accident in February 2000. This special fund was established to raise money to aid Diana and Grace Teo with their tertiary education.

In 2001 Willie Kay & Roger Mitchell were elected and Eric Yeo was co-opted to the Committee of the Lighthouse Club APR.

The second benevolence case occurred when a steel worker fell to his death while fixing a metal door. His daughter, Shirley Xu, was given a monthly allowance to help her through high school. Fund-raising events were in full swing by now and included annual dinner dances, bowling competitions, golf tournaments, race nights, harbour cruises, barbecues etc.

A third, and most poignant case at the time, came when one of the founding members, Tony Quek, suffered a serious illness in 2003 and subsequently passed away in December of that year. An event was organized specifically to help Tony and his family after his passing.

This year Lighthouse Club Singapore is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. It marks a very meaningful and important journey for Lighthouse Club Singapore.

For the past 25 years, Lighthouse Club Singapore has been involved in:

• Facilitating our member-only events: we bring construction industry members and experts together to share the latest trends and knowledge every month, spreading Lighthouse Club’s causes through such events.

• Empowering future generations of construction industry professionals: through book prizes, scholarships, active mentorship, seminars, industry talks and site visits.

• Actively supporting construction workers who often face unexpected hardships and your contributions can make a real difference in their lives by providing them with the resources they need to overcome their challenges. With

We asked Willie Kay, our Honorary Lifetime Member of Lighthouse Club Singapore, for a few words on our 25th Anniversary

Although based in Singapore I travelled the region and spent a significant time in Hong Kong where I was introduced to The Lighthouse Club. The social side, networking, was a key part to the club and it was agreed we should set up a branch in Singapore.

Singapore in those days needed proof to set up a charity so we decided to set up a registered society as, theoretically, this would be simpler. We formed a pro

From Left : Srini, Laurie, Jim, Billy, Khanh, Harvin, Thomas, Kartini (Part of Lighthouse Club Singapore’s council members Year 2025)

tem committee and registered as a society. This took substantially longer, as there were many rules, one being that any Singaporean had to submit their name in Chinese characters as well as English.

Eventually the club was formed and the first celebration was at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club.

Some of our original membersBrian Radley, Colin Thoms - are still in Singapore as are Honey Lim and Eric Yeo.

In the early days, the Lighthouse Club had regular meetings at Carnegies and Handlebars. Both places helped a lot in promoting the club.

These were hard times as the Lighthouse was not known but a dedicated group worked very hard raising money and we grew and grew. We had many charity cases and I had a very supportive wife! I love the idea of a “true charity - no salary” but seeing the joy of helping people. Good luck for the next 25 years.

These days, Willie has retired and returned to the UK with his wife, Alison.

Lighthouse Club Singapore would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr and Mrs Kay for all their contributions to Lighthouse Club Singapore and the Singapore construction industry.

Notable events we have held over the years

Collaboration with Healthserve on health outreaches

At LHC Singapore, one of ways we give back to the industry is through the support we give to migrant workers. To achieve this, we are highlighting one of the organisations with whom we actively work - Healthserve Ltd, a Singapore IPC registered charity that provides health education and outreach services to the migrant workers population in Singapore.

As part of this collaboration, LHC Singapore carries out regular outreach events at various workers dormitories across Singapore. Volunteers with LHC Singapore regularly impart health related tips, spread mental health awareness and encourage participants to carry out activities that promote healthy eating and living.

Supporting education and training in the construction industry

LHC Singapore does this through the assistance it renders to tertiary education in Singapore. The Club is a proud supporter of built-environment related courses at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS) and Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Talks are ongoing regarding LHC Singapore’s support for the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

The financial support rendered is based on what the institution needs:

a. One way was through the provision of a yearly bursary to support students in the built environment and construction courses who are experiencing financial hardship.

b. Another way is through setting up book prizes for students who display academic excellence in built environment related fields

Aside from financial assistance, LHC Singapore regularly organizes industry talks, where industry professionals are

invited to speak and give insights on issues relevant to the construction industry.

LHC Singapore also partners up with tertiary education institutions in mentorship programs. As part of the program, mentors from related fields are paired with students in built-environment related courses to impart knowledge and prepare them for entering the construction sector in the future.

RAFFLES PLACE & CBD REDEVELOPMENT

New skyscrapers, like CapitaSpring, utilize composite structures and vertical gardens. Smart office technologies improve workspace utility. Redevelopment enhances load distribution while embracing sustainability and green urban aesthetics.

WOODLANDS REGIONAL CENTRE (ONGOING)

Woodlands redevelopment focuses on mixed-use planning and modular building design. Sustainability includes green-certified infrastructure and smart systems that reduce waste and energy. Integrated transit stations enhance northern corridor connectivity in this evolving regional hub.

Kudos to the Lighthouse Club Singapore council members for their tireless efforts! Balancing this voluntary role with demanding careers in the construction industry is no easy feat. Thank you for making a difference. Let's continue to build a stronger community and support those who need it.

The Change We Want, The Change We Make: Rosana Wong Champions

OGreen Innovation in Hospitality and Construction at Lighthouse Club

n Wednesday, 11 June, members and guests of Lighthouse Club International gathered at the prestigious Hong Kong Club for an inspiring afternoon of networking, fine dining, and forward-thinking ideas. The highlight of the event was a keynote presentation by Rosana Wong, Executive Director of Yau Lee Holdings, whose visionary leadership is reshaping the future of sustainable construction and hospitality in Hong Kong and beyond.

International Executive Lunch

Rosana Wong, a well-known advocate for green innovation, delivered a compelling address titled “The Change We Want, The Change We Make.” Her presentation focused on the urgent need for sustainability in today’s built environment and how digital transformation can be harnessed to achieve zero-waste, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible outcomes. For those unfamiliar with her work, her article “Pink Provocations and Green Innovations” in the Q3 2024 issue of The Lighthouse offers a deeper dive into her philosophy and projects.

A Green Beacon in Urban Hong Kong

At the heart of Rosana’s keynote was the transformation of Motto by Hilton, located on Jervois Street in Sheung Wan. Dubbed the world’s greenest hotel, this project exemplifies how cutting-edge technology and sustainable design can coexist to redefine urban hospitality. The hotel’s renovation was not just a facelift—it was a complete

reimagining of how a hospitality space can operate with minimal environmental impact.

Rosana detailed how the hotel integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital twin systems, autonomous twinning, and blockchain to manage its facilities with unprecedented precision. These tools allow for real-time monitoring of critical systems, ensuring that

Launch Ceremony of the “Ongoing Promotion Scheme for Occupational Safety and Labour Rights Program”

On 2 July 2025, the Federation of Hong Kong & Kowloon Labour Unions (港九勞工社團聯會) and the Lighthouse Club Hong Kong jointly held the launch ceremony for the “Ongoing Promotion Scheme for Occupational Safety and Labour Rights Program.” The event welcomed representatives from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Development Bureau, Housing Department, Labour Department, Occupational Safety and Health Council, Construction Industry Council and construction industry safety professionals to witness the official launch of the program - marking a significant milestone in the promotion of occupational safety. Their participation reflects a strong commitment to and support for workplace safety.

Both associations have long been dedicated to advancing the well-being of construction workers and fostering social inclusion. This collaboration aims to combine their union strengths and professional charitable networks to address urgent issues faced by construction workers, such as the

need for medical and psychological support following workrelated injuries, and livelihood challenges caused by wage arrears. By pooling resources and promoting cross-sector collaboration, the initiative seeks to deliver targeted support solutions, raise public awareness of the struggles faced by grassroots construction workers and mobilise broader community resources to create greater social impact.

Mr. Poon Kwok Ying, JP, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, officiated the ceremony and delivered a speech. He emphasised the importance of occupational safety and the department’s commitment to ensuring the health and safety of both staff and contractors. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITMEDICAL BENEFIT PROGRAMME

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITMEDICAL BENEFIT PROGRAMME

As an additional membership benefit for its individual and corporate members, Lighthouse Club International ("LHCI") has appointed Mr. Seng Ch’ng, an Insurance Broker, to administer the Lighthouse Club International Medical Benefits Program. This program, which is open to all individual and corporate members of all Lighthouse Clubs who are a member of Lighthouse Club International will, we hope, be of assistance and hopefully enable members to access competitive medical insurance quotations. Seng introduces himself below and provides some further information about the programme:

'My name is Seng Ch’ng and I am a licensed insurance intermediary registered with the Insurance Authority of Hong Kong and a Senior Advisor of Belvest Investment Services Limited. I have been designated to be the sole medical insurance adviser for the benefit of Lighthouse Club International “LHCI” members. My role is to strictly provide medical insurance advice where I will recommend the most suitable medical plan based on your needs.

The benefits for LHCI members are that I have a wide range of providers to choose from for competitive quotations, plans specific for expats as well as access to group discounts.

A benefit for the LHCI supported charities is that an agreement is in place so that part of the medical premium paid will be donated to the James Battersby Lighthouse Educational Trust and Lighthouse Club International Benevolent Trust or other LHCI designated charities.

Some of the reasons why you may want to receive a medical insurance quote for you and your family, or your company are:

• To explore cost savings from another provider because premiums are always changing year to year. A review is recommended at least once every 2 years if not every year as premium increases can be very drastic.

• The current provider may not be suitable for yourself or your company anymore.

• You’re not happy with the service or benefits provided or want additional coverage that isn’t covered currently, such as maternity cover.

• You’re approaching retirement and you may lose cover when you leave your current employer.

• You’re employed on a contract basis where the medical insurance is only for the contract period and want to have your own medical cover.

• You need extra coverage as the current plan is very basic. For example, you only have out-patient coverage or have low limits on hospitalization.

• You simply don’t like your current medical provider due to their service quality.

If you would like a review of your current medical plan or looking for a new medical plan, then click on the link to fill in some details and I’ll contact you with some recommendations.

All information provided will be strictly confidential and will not be shared with any other person or company for marketing of other services. All premiums paid by an insured are paid directly to the medical insurer for the policy. Again, my sole and only purpose is to provide medical insurance for the benefit of Lighthouse Club members.

Lighthouse Club Bangkok Hosts Monthly Late Lunch With Construction Industry Players

On 27 June 2025, the Lighthouse Club Bangkok hosted their regular monthly late lunch at Indigo, a French restaurant that has been established in Bangkok since January 2000. The restaurant stands strong and is located on a quiet cozy corner of Convent Road, Silom in Bangkok.

This event brought together 60+ industry professionals from many prominent companies from the construction and related industries.

The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Fallprotec Asia.

A little about our sponsor, Fallprotec

Fallprotec Asia is a Fallprotec partner company. Fallprotec Asia, provides safe access solutions for cleaning and maintenance , glass replacement of facades and working at heights.

Fallprotec is all about innovating systems for working at heights. It is continually working to make its products better in compliance with European and all international global height safety regulations.

Indigo - Cozy French Restaurant
Our Sponsor – Mr Trevor Dick from Fallprotect Asia together with Lighthouse Club Bangkok Committee member – Mr Danny Doolan

In addition to designing and manufacturing, installing and maintaining, Fallprotec offers services such as engineering consultancy, project management, risks assessment studies and local training.

Our professional staff provide the best support to our clients, distributors and installers on a daily basis as well as guiding the customer from the first-scratch concepts up to the final installation - all to global standards such as EN . BS, OHSA.

Promoting of fellowship

Lighthouse Club Bangkok has been in existence since 1991. If you were involved in construction in Thailand during those years you would know that the industry was booming at that time.

Lighthouse Club promotes good fellowship among its members and provides charitable assistance to distressed people within the industry.

Lighthouse Club networking events and lunches have allowed for meaningful connections and insightful discussions, besides a simple gathering of friends. It has allowed likeminded people from the construction industry players to talk about industry trends, best practices and the latest information in the industry.

Fallprotec Asia's Continued Support

Fallprotec Asia's sponsorship demonstrates their commitment to the construction industry and the Lighthouse Club's mission.

Building Relationships

This event provided a platform for professionals to build relationships, exchange ideas and explore potential collaborations at a less formal setting where everyone relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company.

Providing to society

Donations collected from fund-raising events, and lunches, are used to help local Thai charities.

Last year, Lighthouse Club Bangkok donated a total of THB400,000, about U$12,000, to the Human Development Foundation and Kids Home Development of Thailand.

Revitalize the club!

The global pandemic affected us all and the Club was also a casualty as the lack of international travel and local movement restrictions saw membership numbers fall.

The Lighthouse Club Bangkok Committee are therefore on the lookout for new “blood” to join and help to promote the Club motto "Aliis cum Humanitate", which translates as "Consideration for Others”.

STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE EVENTS

We look forward to future Lighthouse Club events and continued partnerships with like-minded people from the construction industry.

Lhc Brisbane Provide Meaningful Career Tips For Members

On 26 March the Queensland Chapter co-hosted an engaging and insightful evening with the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) Quantity Surveying Emerging Professionals (QSEP) exploring Career Development tools and strategies for standing out in today’s job market.

Thank you to our amazing speakers who provided such invaluable advice and feedback:

• Danielle Woods - People Advisor - QLD, VIC and WA from Arcadis

• Lucia Schefermann - Talent Acquisition Specialist QLD from RP Infrastructure

• Asli Wilde - Director - Projects, Tech and Growth from Talentpath Recruitment

Some Key Takeaways:

• CV & Resume Tips – Tailor your CV / cover letter / application to each role, make it easy for recruiters with clear headings and bullet points, keep it simple. Avoid mistakes such as typos and grammar errors.

• Interview Strategies – Research the company and the role. Prepare and practice for common and behavioural questions, showcase your unique value and have questions prepared to ask. “The more relaxed you are, the more authentic you will be.”

• Using LinkedIn – A strong and up-to-date LinkedIn profile is a game-changer. Make sure it accurately matches your CV. Use LinkedIn to target businesses / contacts you want to work for.

• In-Demand Skills – Employers seek adaptability, problem-solving, digital skills and soft skills –spend as much time as you can in the office to learn more in person – it provides more opportunities for face-to-face learning, to ask questions, network and build relationships. “Your network will determine how many doors will open.”

A special Thank You also to Sarah Rolton and Arcadis and Neil Gall and the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors for hosting and supporting our event, as well as Rachel Yan from QSEP and Sarah Norman from our QLD Chapter for facilitating and MC'ing to make this event a great success!

LIGHTHOUSE CLUB MANILA AGM 2025: A Night of Support, Growth, and Community

On 12 March 2025, the German Club Manila served as the venue for the Lighthouse Club Manila’s Annual General Meeting; an evening of reflection, progress, and strengthened commitment to our mission within the construction industry.

The meeting was opened and chaired by Bert de Munck, who presented a comprehensive review of the Club’s key achievements in 2024. His report highlighted notable growth in events, updates on our graduated scholars and newly enrolled scholars in the scholarship program, current memberships, and the election of officers for the Board of Trustees. Olivier Guilluy followed with the Club’s financial report, underlining its sound financial position. Steve Free then outlined the Club’s upcoming events and marketing plans for 2025, emphasizing an active and engaging year ahead.

The AGM also offered a moment to recognize the invaluable support of our corporate and individual members. In particular, we were pleased to formally welcome WSP as our first Platinum Corporate Member; a significant milestone reflecting their active support for the expansion of our scholarship program and broader charitable efforts.

A key highlight of the evening was the announcement by Stephane Marrec of the rebranding of our gold member Reinforced Earth as Geoquest Philippines. This relaunch marks a renewed strategic direction and reinforces their long-term commitment to innovation and excellence within the Philippine construction landscape.

The evening concluded with the formal election of the Board of Trustees for the coming year. The newly elected Board reflects a strong and diverse leadership team committed to furthering the Club’s mission. The full Board now comprises:

Bert de Munck, James Chant, Arlene Abelardo, Olivier Guilluy, Elisa Thoburn, Julian Smith, Weston Reece, Michael McKenzie, Angelica Takashima, Anna Campbell, and Steve Free.

Lighthouse Club Manila remains dedicated to promoting fellowship, advancing charitable initiatives, and fostering collaboration across the construction industry. We invite professionals who share these values to join us and be part of this purposeful network.

Lighthouse Club Manila Social Events: Strengthening Connections Across the Industry

Over the past few months, Lighthouse Club Manila has organised a series of social events that brought together members and guests in a relaxed setting to reconnect, expand their networks and engage with peers across the construction industry. These informal gatherings continue to support the Club’s aim of fostering community and professional exchange.

On 14 March, members gathered for a Curry Night at Mantra Indian Kitchen and Bar, enjoying a relaxed Friday evening of shared food, conversation and informal connection.

This was followed by two Social Nights at Society Lounge on 27 March and 27 April, where members and guests enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere, casual networking and good company. Supported by Yield Investing for the March event, these gatherings provided a consistent space for reconnecting with peers and meeting new faces in the industry.

The Club then hosted two larger events at Shangri-La Makati on 22 May and 26 June. Sponsored by Lotte Gulermak EEI Joint Venture, the May gathering drew over 70 attendees and offered a more expansive setting for cross-sector networking. The June event closed out the quarter on a strong note, reinforcing the Club’s commitment to regular engagement and community-building.

These events continue to reflect the Club’s focus on building a supportive network within the industry. Members and guests are encouraged to participate not only to stay professionally connected but also to contribute to the Club’s wider charitable and community-based initiatives, including Women in Construction and the Young Members Group.

New members are always welcome. Join us at future events and be part of an active and engaged professional community.

Dear Lighthouse Club Manila,

I am writing this email with immense gratitude and a heart full of appreciation for the scholarship you generously provided me, Ivan D. Arimbuyutan, a BS Architecture student at Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, from 2023 until my recent graduation in 2025.

Words cannot fully express how deeply thankful I am for your unwavering support. As both of my parents are seniors and faced limitations in fully supporting my college education, especially during the financially demanding last two years of my undergraduate course, your scholarship truly became a beacon of hope. It significantly eased the considerable financial burden on my family and allowed me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies without constant worry.

Beyond the crucial financial assistance, I am profoundly grateful for the sense of family and belonging I acquired during my scholarship years. The events, gatherings, and various initiatives organized by Lighthouse Club Manila made me feel truly included and a part of a caring community. This invaluable connection provided a support system that went far beyond monetary aid.

Thanks to your belief in me and the practical help you extended, I am proud to say that I graduated on time and with flying colors. I firmly believe that I would not have achieved this without the foundation and peace of mind your scholarship afforded me. I was honored to receive several awards, including:

• Excellence Service Award - Silver

• Top 1 Design 9 (Thesis Writing) - Set B

• Top 4 Design 10 (Thesis Application) - Set B

• Most Socially Relevant Thesis - Set B

I will forever be grateful for all the help you have given me, expecting nothing in return. Your generosity has not only shaped my academic journey but has also instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility and a desire to give back to the community, just as you have done for me.

Thank you once again for everything.

Sincerely,

Celebrating Women Who Build: Lighthouse

Club Manila Honors Creativity and Resilience in the Construction Industry

In celebration of Women’s Month, Lighthouse Club Manila proudly launched the Women Who Build Challenge, a meaningful initiative under the Women in Construction program that aims to recognise the strength, creativity and contribution of women across the construction sector.

This year’s theme, Women Who Build, invited participants to share their experiences and insights through creative and thoughtful submissions. The initiative was introduced by Board of Trustees member Ms. Angelica Takashima, whose vision was to spotlight the powerful stories of women shaping the built environment.

The challenge culminated in the selection of an outstanding entry: The Candy Train by the GCR Design Team, representing women in the railway sector. Their vibrant and symbolically rich model was selected for its creativity, narrative strength and powerful representation of women’s resilience in the industry.

Judging was led by Architect Aireen Ablaza (GC-MMSP) and Ms. Nathalia Louisse Ablaza (Intro Recruitment Asia), who commended the quality and diversity of all submissions.

In their artist statement, the GCR Design Team shared:

“We proudly present the ‘Candy Train’: visually appealing yet robust. The colours reflect women who are fun yet daring, sweet yet strong and fearless in every sense. Whether working underground, atgrade, or on elevated sites, women are leading and transforming railway projects into safe and efficient public infrastructures.”

“This piece is meant to inspire. Like the Candy Train, women can move forward with strength and grace toward any destination. We aim to encourage women to recognise their unique capabilities and push beyond boundaries.”

(Material: 3D printed in Polylactic Acid via jetting material extrusion, hand-painted in acrylic)

Lighthouse Club Manila congratulates the GCR Design Team and all participants who contributed their inspiring work to the challenge. Your creativity and voices are helping to build a more inclusive and empowered future for the construction industry.

Macau, always sociable

Lighthouse Club Macau has been very busy since February this year, thanks to our loyal members and event sponsors, even though no event was held in January due to the Christmas/New Year and Chinese New Year holiday season. 2025 is our 20th Anniversary which we will be featuring with lavish content in the Q3 issue of The Lighthouse. But let’s start with our recent Annual General Meeting.

General Secretary Carlos Tang

Membership Secretary Gloria Lui

Treasurer Irene Lei

Branch Chairman, Keith Buckley, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who generously gave their time and energy in support of Lighthouse Club Macau. He also extended special thanks to our dedicated Treasurer, Irene Lei, and the committed team at Top Builders Group (TBG), whose unwavering support made a meaningful difference—whether through welcoming guests at reception, managing membership records, assisting with the lucky draw, or capturing memorable moments from our events.

Building Momentum Through Fellowship

With the formalities of the AGM concluded, Lighthouse Club Macau wasted no time in reigniting its signature spirit of camaraderie. The months that followed saw a vibrant lineup of monthly gatherings—each one uniquely hosted by our generous sponsors and attended by our ever-enthusiastic members. Here’s a recap of the highlights from each memorable evening.

February at St. Regis – Welcoming the Year with Pat Davie

Ltd

The February gathering took place on 12 February at the ever-popular St. Regis Hotel Bar and was generously sponsored by Pat Davie (Macau) Ltd. We were delighted to welcome over 100 guests. Established in the 1970s, Pat Davie Ltd is renowned for delivering top-tier interior fitting-out works, building renovations, additions and alterations, and design-andbuild fit-out projects. Over the decades, the company has firmly established its presence across Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China. It was a fantastic evening featuring a superb selection of food and smooth background entertainment, courtesy of singer Jandira Silva and her accompanying pianist.

March at Ritz Carlton –Circle Engineering Lights Up the Night

The March gathering, held on 12 March, brought us to the elegant Ritz Carlton Hotel Bar and was generously sponsored by Circle Engineering Company Ltd. We welcomed approximately 130 guests. Adrian Pang, representing Circle, gave an insightful introduction to the company. Originally set up in 2005 and officially founded in early 2006, Circle is a well-established engineering construction company based in Macau. Specialising in human resources, project management, and the execution of construction works, Circle is committed to delivering high-quality, skilful engineering solutions. The company prides itself on providing professional services and effective technical and project management outcomes for its clients. Circle also contributed to the evening’s excitement by donating lucky draw prizes, including cash rewards and bottles of Japanese whisky.

April Celebration –AGM and Gathering Sponsored by TBG

Following the AGM, the April gathering continued at the St. Regis Hotel Bar, generously sponsored by Top Builders Group (TBG). Since its establishment in 2004, TBG has steadily grown into one of Macau’s largest and most reputable construction companies, successfully delivering a wide range of projects for both private and government markets. In recent years, Top Builders has expanded its footprint beyond Macau, entering the

construction and real estate development sectors in Angola, the Philippines, and the UK. The evening was attended by approximately 120 guests and was made all the more special with the presence of TBG’s Founder and Managing Director, Forest Tang, along with Director Carlos Tang. It was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, further enlivened by TBG’s generous donation of ten bottles of whisky for the lucky draw.

May Poolside Delight

A Breezy Evening with Zeko Group

The May gathering took place on Wednesday, 14 May at the scenic Pool Deck of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, with generous sponsorship from our long-time supporter, Zeko Group Ltd. The evening was blessed with perfect

weather and a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. Zeko Director, Jason Li, introduced the company, highlighting their remarkable progress in fitting out and A&A projects across Macau since their founding in 2019—especially their resilience through the challenges of the Covid era. Approximately 110 guests attended, and Zeko further elevated the event with their thoughtful donation of lucky draw prizes.

The Lighthouse Club upholds three principal objectives: fellowship, charity, and learning. All proceeds from our Lighthouse Club Macau events are directed to our Benevolent Fund. The Macau Lighthouse Club Benevolent Fund is dedicated to supporting those in need within the local construction industry. It provides financial assistance to individuals affected by serious accidents or illness, and to the dependents of those who have suffered a fatality.

As of 2025, we have had one fatal accident and one lifethreatening serious injury. Donations have been made to the families, and without the generous support of our members, this would not have been possible.
