State Sen. Emil Jones III pleads not guilty in bribery case

Prosecutors allege he took $5,000 bribe from red light camera company

SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Emil Jones III pleaded not guilty in federal court Friday to three felony counts stemming from an alleged bribery scheme involving a red light camera company.

Jones, 44, is a Chicago Democrat who has served in the Senate since 2009. He is also the son of former Senate President Emil Jones Jr. who served in the Senate from 1983 to 2009.

The charges are the result of a long-running investigation into public corruption in the Chicago area that has resulted in indictments against several state legislators. Part of that investigation has focused on officials’ ties to companies that operate “automated traffic enforce ment systems,” or red light cameras.

Those are devices that can detect when a motorist runs a red light and issue

automatic traffic tickets. The companies provide that service to certain munici palities in exchange for a percentage of the revenue generated.

In 2019, Jones proposed legislation calling on the Illinois Department of Transportation to conduct a statewide study to evaluate those systems. The bill passed out of the Senate Transportation Committee but was never voted on by the full Senate.

The charges, which were made public Tuesday, allege that in exchange for a payment of $5,000 and a job for an unnamed associate from a company that operates red light cameras outside the city of Chicago, Jones agreed to focus the study only on red light cameras in Chicago.

Jones was also charged with facil itating the scheme by using a Google email account and with lying to federal investigators.

Combined, the three charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison followed by nine years of supervised probation and fines up to $750,000.

During Friday’s arraignment, which was conducted by teleconference, Jones

waived his right to a formal indictment by a grand jury and allowed prosecutors to file the charges through what’s known as an information.

He remains free on an unsecured bond of $10,000, meaning he would only have to pay that amount if he fails to show up at any court proceeding. He was also ordered to surrender his passport and not to leave the United States without permission from the court.

Prosecutors said Friday that there is “voluminous” evidence that Jones’ defense team is entitled to review.

He is also running unopposed for reelection from the 14th District. On Thursday, Gov. JB Pritzker called on him to resign his seat but Jones has not responded to that statement.

His next court appearance will be a status hearing scheduled for Nov. 4, four days before the general election.

Pritzker urges two lawmakers to resign

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker called on two Democratic state senators Thursday to resign their seats amid allegations of misconduct.

Sen. Emil Jones III, D-Chicago, was charged in federal court earlier this week with soliciting a $5,000 bribe from a red light camera company. And Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, faces accusations of domestic violence against his estranged wife, according a report by public radio station WBEZ in Chicago. Both have given up their roles in the Senate Democrats’ leadership team but remain in the Senate.

“Senator Jones is accused of accepting bribes. And Senator Hastings is accused of abusing women. They should answer the charges and have their day in court,” Pritzker said in a statement Thursday. “But in the best interests of their constit uents, these men must resign from their offices. Resigning only their leadership roles falls short of what the public should expect. I want to send a clear message to the people of Illinois: Corruption and

abuse have no place here.”

So far, however, Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, has not gone that far.

“The gravity of the accusations required immediate action and conse quences, which is why the Senate president demanded and received resig nations from their leadership posts,” his spokesman, John Patterson, said in an email statement. “Now it is up to these individuals and their constituents to determine their futures.”

The governor’s statement came just a little more than six weeks before the Nov. 8 general election in which both senators are on the ballot.

Jones is running unopposed in the 14th District, which includes portions of Chicago and its southwest suburbs. He is the son of former Senate President Emil Jones Jr.

Hastings faces a challenge from Republican police officer Patrick Sheehan in the 19th District in the city’s south suburbs. Once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, he is an attorney and Army veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Iraq.

Hastings’ legal troubles began more

than two years ago when he was sued for racial and gender discrimination by his former chief of staff. The state hired a private attorney to defend him and eventually agreed to pay $100,000 to settle the case.

But according to WBEZ, he now faces accusations of domestic abuse from his estranged wife, including an allegation that “in 2020, he put her in a headlock and slammed her into a door repeatedly.”

“The allegations made therein are baseless and without merit,” Hastings said in a statement Thursday through his spokesman. “I look forward to continuing to serve the best interests of the hard-working men and women of the south suburbs.”

His Republican rival, however, joined Pritzker in calling for Hastings’ resignation.

“I have done my best to run a positive campaign on my record of supporting and defending our families and community,” Sheehan said in a statement. “However, the abuse allegations against my oppo nent have become too serious to ignore.”

Jones did not respond to a request for comment.

Russia

Russian military recruiter shot amid fear of Ukraine call-up

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A young man shot a Russian military officer at close range at an enlistment office Monday, in an unusually bold attack reflecting resistance to the Russian leadership’s efforts to mobilize hundreds of thousands of men to wage war on Ukraine.

The shooting comes after scattered arson attacks on enlistment offices and protests in Russian cities against the call-up that have resulted in at least 2,000 arrests. Russia is seeking to bolster its military as its Ukraine offensive has bogged down and sapped its forces.

In the attack in the Siberian city of Ust-Ilimsk, 25-year-old local resident Ruslan Zinin walked into the enlistment office saying “no one will go to fight” and “we will all go home now,” according to local media reports.

Zinin was arrested and officials vowed tough punishment. Local authorities said the military commandant was in inten sive care, without elaborating. A witness quoted by local news site said Zinin was in a room of people called up to fight. Troops from his region were scheduled to head to military bases Tuesday.

Concerns are growing that Russia may seek to escalate the conflict — including potentially using nuclear weapons — once it completes what Ukraine and the West see as illegal referendums in parts of Ukraine under its control.

The voting, in which residents are asked whether they want their regions to become part of Russia, began last week and ends Tuesday, in conditions that are anything but free or fair.

Thousands of residents had already fled the regions amid months of incessant fighting, and images shared by those who remained have showed armed Russian troops going door-to-door to pressure Ukrainians into casting a ballot.

“Every night and day there is inevi table shelling in the Donbas, under the roar of which people are forced to vote for Russian ‘peace,’” Donetsk regional governor Pavlo Kirilenko said Monday.

Russia is widely expected to declare the results in its favor, a step that could see Moscow annex the territory and give it the pretext to defend it as its own territory under the Russian nuclear umbrella.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that no date has been set for recognizing the regions as part of Russia, but it could be a question of days.

Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, said Russia would pay a high,

if unspecified, price if it made good on veiled threats to use nuclear weapons in the conflict.

“If Russia crosses this line, there will be catastrophic consequences for Russia. The United States will respond decisively,” he told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

On Monday, Russian Vladimir Putin and Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko held an unannounced meet ing in the southern Russian city of Sochi and said they were ready to cooperate with the West — “if they treat us with respect,” Putin said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Monday that Putin had told Turkey’s president during their meeting in Uzbekistan last week that Moscow was ready to resume negotiations with Ukraine but had “new conditions” for a cease-fire. The minister didn’t elaborate on the conditions.

The Kremlin last week announced a partial mobilization – its first since World War II – to add at least 300,000 troops to its force in Ukraine. The move, a sharp shift from Putin’s previous efforts to portray the war as a limited military operation that wouldn’t interfere with most Russians’ lives, proved unpopular at home.

Thousands of men of fighting age flocked to airports and Russia’s land border crossings in an effort to avoid being called up. Protests erupted in various parts of the country, and Russian media reported an increasing number of arson attacks on military enlistment offices, including one that hit the south ern city of Uryupinsk on Monday.

Meanwhile, the first batches of Russian troops mobilized by Moscow have begun to arrive at military bases, the British military said Monday. In an online

intelligence briefing, the British Defense Ministry said tens of thousands had been called up so far.

Under normal circumstances, two battalions deploy while a third remains behind to train. But in the Ukraine war, even the third battalion is deploying, weakening that training, the British Defense Ministry said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a Facebook post Monday that the Ukrainian military is pushing efforts to take back “the entire territory of Ukraine,” and has drawn up plans to counter “new types of weapons” used by Russia, without elaborating.

An overnight drone strike near the Ukrainian port of Odesa sparked a massive fire and explosion, the military said Monday. It was the latest in a series of drone attacks on the key southern city in recent days, and hit a military installation and detonated ammunition when it struck. Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze, and civilians nearby were evacuated, the Ukrainian military’s southern command said.

New Russian shelling struck the area around the Zaporozhzhia nuclear power plant, according to Zelenskyy’s office. Cities near the station were fired on nine times in recent hours by rocket launchers and heavy artillery.

In the town of Izium in eastern Ukraine, which Russian forces left earlier this month after a Ukrainian counteroffen sive, Margaryta Tkachenko is still reeling from the battle that destroyed her home and left her family close to starvation.

With no gas, electricity, running water or internet, she said, “I can’t predict what will happen next. Winter is the most frightening. We have no wood. How will we heat?”

Bills would curtail objections at future Jan. 6 vote counts

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of Congress have officially objected to the results in four of the last six presidential elections, a partisan practice that has been legal for over a century but became much more fraught after a violent mob of then-President Donald Trump’s support ers attacked the U.S. Capitol last year.

In an effort to prevent another Jan. 6, 2021, bills moving through the House and the Senate would make it harder to lodge those objections when Congress counts the electoral votes in a joint session after every presidential election. The move to curtail the objections is part of a larger effort to overhaul the 1800s-era Electoral Count Act and safeguard the integrity of the vote after Trump tried to persuade his Republican allies in Congress to vote against Democrat Joe Biden’s victory and overturn his 2020 defeat.

Under current law, only one member of the House and one member of the Senate has to challenge a state’s results to trigger votes on that state’s electors in each chamber. If a simple majority in each chamber votes to sustain the objection, that state’s votes can be thrown out.

The House and Senate bills would each raise that threshold substantially, with the House bill requiring a third of each chamber to object and the Senate bill requiring a fifth of each chamber to object. The House legislation, passed last week, would also lay out new requirements for the grounds for an objection.

“It is just too easy to trigger an objec tion when it only requires one person in each chamber,” says Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican co-sponsor of the Senate version. Eleven GOP senators have signed on to the legislation, which is up for a vote in a Senate committee on Tuesday.

If the bills are consolidated into one measure that becomes law, it will do away with a tradition that has become increasingly popular as Congress has become more polarized.

Democrats have objected the last three times that Republicans were elected — twice against George W. Bush and once against Trump — but in each of those cases the Democratic candidate had already conceded the election.

The stakes were raised considerably in 2021, when Trump and his allies were actively trying to thwart Biden’s win, with a strategy to throw out Biden electors in Congress and the support of a violent mob

that broke into the Capitol, interrupted the joint session and threatened the lives of lawmakers and Vice President Mike Pence.

House Administration Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren of California, the Democratic sponsor of the House bill with Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, said the bill would protect the voters’ will from “frivolous” objections and more sinister efforts.

“If you want to object to the vote, you better have your colleagues and the Constitution on your side,” Lofgren said just before the bill passed. “Don’t try to overturn our democracy.”

At the 2021 joint session, two GOP senators — Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri — joined a larger group of House Republicans in objecting to Biden’s electoral votes in Arizona and Pennsylvania, two swing states that Trump had won in the 2016 election but lost in 2020. Both the House and the Senate voted to certify Biden’s win in those states in the hours after the rioters had injured police officers, rampaged through the Capitol and sent lawmakers running for their lives. But eight senators and almost 140 members of the House voted to sustain the objections.

Congress had only held such votes twice since the enactment of the Electoral Count Act 135 years ago. In 1969, two Democratic senators joined a member of the House to object to the vote of one elector in North Carolina during the certification of Republican Richard Nixon’s victory. In 2004, Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, D-Ohio, objected to President George W. Bush’s electors in Ohio over what they said were voting irregularities.

In both cases, the House and the Senate rejected the objections.

In several other instances, members of the House have lodged objections without the support of a senator. In 2000, several members of the Congressional Black Caucus objected to Bush’s electors in Florida after the Supreme Court had forced a halt to vote-counting in that state and decided the election. Vice President Al Gore, whom Bush had defeated, gaveled the objections down as he presided over the session.

In 2016, several Democrats stood and objected to Trump’s win over Democrat Hillary Clinton but no senator joined, and Vice President Joe Biden dismissed them. Like Gore, Clinton had already conceded defeat.

Members on both sides of the Capitol have been working on the revisions to the Electoral Count Act since the 2021 insur rection, saying the law’s vague language was not robust enough protection against Trump’s overt attempts to subvert the will of the people. The bills would also clarify that the vice president’s role is solely ceremonial and try to prevent states from creating slates of illegitimate electors, as Trump’s allies tried to do.

The House bill is more expansive than the Senate bill, and the two sides will eventually have to resolve their differ ences into a single measure. That includes the House language with new grounds for any objection, which would restrict the process even further.

Under the House legislation, no member could make an objection unless it fell under a strict set of parameters that relate to the Constitution — that the state is not validly a state, if the state submits too many electoral votes or if a candidate is not eligible, for example.

House Republicans argued against the legislation by saying it was a political attack on Trump, noting the frequent Democratic objections over the years. It only received nine Republican votes, all from members who are not returning to the House next year.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., responded that if lawmakers believed there had been too many objections in the past, “you should absolutely be supporting

this legislation.”

Hawley, who was photographed raising a fist to pro-Trump protesters outside the Capitol ahead of last year’s joint session, said in an interview that he is “skeptical” of the effort to change a law that has been in place for so many years.

“My concern is that it’s going to look like to Republican voters that Democrats can object as much as often as they want,” the Missouri Republican said, noting the objections in 2000, 2004 and 2016.

“As soon as Republicans do, they change the law,” Hawley said. “I can promise you, that will be the perception.”

Still, 11 Republican senators have signed on to the Senate bill, enough to break a filibuster and pass the bill in the 50-50 Senate.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, who is retiring, was the latest GOP senator to sign on to the legislation last week.

“The poor drafting of the 1887 Electoral Count Act endangered the transition of power from one Administration to the next,” Toomey said when he announced his support.

“Unfortunately, in the over 100 inter vening years, individual Democratic and Republican members of Congress have occasionally attempted to exploit the ambiguities in this law to cast doubt on the validity of our elections, culminating in the debacle of January 6, 2021,” he said. “It is past time Congress act.”

Ghosts and vampires

Just one week into autumn, and it’s already feeling like Halloween – and not just because neighbors are already setting out pumpkins, scarecrows, and other spooky decorations. It’s because ghosts, zombies, and vampires are back on TV.

First up, CBS’s breakout comedy, Ghosts, returns for a second season on Thursday, September 29. The show centers on a young couple, Samantha (Rose McIver, iZombie) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar, Never Have I Ever) working to restore an old mansion she inherited and turn it into a bed and breakfast. In season one, an accident left Sam able to see, hear, and interact with ghosts, who have become like family to her. One ghost, the prim Victorian elitist Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky, Dopesick), actually is one of Sam’s ancestors.

In the first season, Jay couldn’t see or hear the ghosts, but when he and

Sam fell through the floor in the season finale, some fans are wondering if he’ll be able to interact directly with Hetty, Revolutionary War captain Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), scoutmaster Pete (Richie Moriatry), jazz singer Albert (Danielle Pinnock), Viking pillager Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long), hippy Flower (Sheila Carrasco), indigenous storyteller Sasappis (Roman Zaragoza), stock broker bro Trevor (Asher Grodman), and all of the basement ghosts who died of cholera.

Whether Jay can communicate with the ghosts in season two, laughter will ensue.

The zombies and vampires invade AMC on Sunday, October 2 when The Walking Dead returns for the first of its final episodes, followed immediately by the series premiere of Interview with the Vampire.

The 11th and final season of The Walking Dead premiered over a year ago; AMC released it little by little while introducing

yet more spinoffs. (Full disclosure: I’ve tried watching the spinoffs, but never really got into any of them.) Being the last episodes of the long running zombie franchise’s flagship series, no characters are safe.

“But there’s a Daryl (Norman Reedus) spinoff in the works, so he’s going to survive,” you say. It’s TV. Anything could happen. The spinoff could be a prequel, or it might span the period Daryl was living apart from the rest of the characters.

Whatever happens, I don’t want them to kill Daryl’s dog, Dog (played by Seven). Dog is by far my favorite character on The Walking Dead.

I’m really interested to see the latest adaptation of Anne Rice’s classic 1976 novel, Interview with the Vampire – the first in a series of books known as The Vampire Chronicles. I loved the book, but didn’t care for the lavish 1994 film starring Tom Cruise as Lestat and Brad Pitt as Louis. The novel is too expansive

to convey the scope of the undead char acters’ lives in two hours.

Each book in The Vampire Chronicles focused on a different vampire. Interview with the Vampire told the story of Louis –played by British actor Jacob Anderson (Broadchurch) on the new show – while The Vampire Lestat (1985) delved into the long and colorful life of Lestat (played in the series by Australian actor Sam Reid, Prime Suspect: Tennison).

The series should have more real estate to tell such a sprawling story. I just hope it stays true to the conflicted characters.

Programming Notes:

Ghosts returns for season two Thursday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. CT on CBS.

The Walking Dead returns with its final episodes starting Sunday, October 2 and 8 p.m. CT on AMC.

Interview with the Vampire premieres Sunday, October 2 at 9:06 p.m. CT on AMC.

Analysis: Backups, be ready. NFL’s QB carousel is spinning

The NFL’s quarterback carousel may start spinning a bit faster.

Mac Jones, Tua Tagovailoa and Josh Allen got banged-up Sunday. Justin Herbert and Jameis Winston played hurt. Already, Dak Prescott and Trey Lance have gone down.

Backups, be ready.

Jones’ leg injury appears most serious. The second-year pro hopped off the field late in the fourth quarter of New England’s 37-26 loss to Baltimore, and he appeared to be in extreme pain in photos showing him being assisted to the locker room.

Veteran Brian Hoyer would take over for the Patriots (1-2) if Jones is sidelined. They visit the Green Bay Packers (2-1) this week, a difficult opponent regardless who is under center.

“I think we’ve always talked about it my whole time here, it’s always the next-man-up mentality if it comes to that,” Patriots defensive back Jason McCourty said.

Teddy Bridgewater was the next man for the Dolphins when Tagovailoa stumbled

off the field late in the first half of Miami’s 21-19 win over Buffalo after hitting his head on the ground. Bridgewater was in for three plays because Tagovailoa passed concussion protocol and retuned to the game in the third quarter. He explained his legs were wobbly following the play because he hurt his back.

Tagovailoa wore a wrap around his back after the game and his status for Thursday night’s game at Cincinnati is uncertain.

“It’s a quick turnaround so you have to move on quick and get ready for Cincinnati,” Tagovailoa said. “For me, I’m just worried about getting my back right. Right now, it’s tight. It was sore when it did happen, but any competitor that would have never wanted to come out would’ve done the same thing. I just tried my hardest to get back up and get the next play and run it.”

If Tagovailoa can’t go for the Dolphins (3-0), they have a capable backup.

Bridgewater is 33-30 in his career as a starter with the Vikings, Saints, Panthers and Broncos.

Allen needed an X-ray after the game on his right hand but didn’t have any protec tion on it afterward and insisted he’s fine.

The Bills (2-1) visit the Ravens this week. They have veteran Case Keenum, though Allen should be ready to go.

Playing with fractured rib cartilage, Herbert struggled as the Chargers were routed by the Jaguars 38-10 in Los Angeles. Coach Brandon Staley allowed Herbert to finish the game and throw 45 passes despite the lopsided score.

The Chargers (1-2) play at Houston this week and there’s no reason to think Herbert wouldn’t start.

“Justin is going to be feeling like this when he’s out there playing,” Staley said. “This injury is going to be there for a while. ... It’s not like it’s going to feel better next week or the week after that. This thing is going to be present for a while. He felt good today. We’re going to continue to manage it the best we can.”

Winston played his second straight game for the Saints with a back injury. He threw for 353 yards but also tossed two interceptions in a 22-14 loss at Carolina. New Orleans (1-2) meets Minnesota in London next Sunday. Saints coach Dennis Allen said he’s not considering replacing Winston with Andy Dalton.

“He is a battler. He is tough. Yeah, he is

fighting through some things, and that is part of playing pro football,” Allen said of Winston.

One QB switch that’s certain to happen is in New York. The Jets will turn to Zach Wilson once he’s cleared to return from a preseason a knee injury. They’re 1-2 with Joe Flacco. Wilson is expected back against Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The 49ers lost their first full game without Lance, who went down with a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Jimmy Garoppolo, who filled in nicely after Lance got hurt in the first quarter of a 27-7 win over Seattle, threw a pick in an 11-10 loss at Denver on Sunday night.

The Cowboys will seek their second consecutive win with Cooper Rush when they play at the New York Giants on Monday night. Prescott fractured a bone near his right thumb in a season-opening loss to Tampa Bay. He could return in a week or two.

The strange fate of Mary Jonas

The Jonas family was typical for late 1850s. John and Elizabeth Jonas were born in the east and moved their way across the Midwest, farming and looking for a place to set down their roots. The Jonas family consisted of three children, two boys and a girl, who helped their parents break the land and build the farm. They finally found the perfect location for their home along the Kickapoo River and purchased 160 acres in the Viroqua region of Wisconsin.

William was the oldest boy and by the 1860s he was married and started his own family. He died of disease while serving in the Wisconsin Volunteers during the Civil War.

The remaining son, Daniel decided to move to Missouri to start his own farm. John and Elizabeth’s daughter, Mary never married and stayed with her parents on the family farm in Wisconsin. She took care of her aging parents until her father passed away in 1890. Elizabeth was very crippled by this time and the decision was made to move her to Missouri where she would live with Daniel and his family. Mary decided to stay in Wisconsin to work the family farm.  Mary struggled with what she felt was her duty to her father’s wishes for the family farm and her loneliness for her family. She rented out the land to nearby farmers and filled her time with gardening and visiting with the neigh boring wives. But her loneliness for her family grew.

All this put Mary, now a woman in her late 30’s, in a vulnerable position. That is exactly what one of her neighbors, Samuel Buxton was counting on. Samuel had worked for Mary on and off for years and knew that her father had left her in a good financial condition. He lived about a mile from the Jonas farm with his wife and two children.

Samuel also knew that Mary was superstitious and that the whole family had believed in curses and hexes. Mary’s father, John was born in Pennsylvania and would share stories of the power of the witches in the east. He told Mary that whole families had come to ruin when cursed by those who followed the devil. These stories had a great impact on Mary, and she grew fearful that she would come under a witch’s spell.

Samuel Buxton knew all of this and decided that he would use it to his advantage. In 1891, Samuel brough a series of letters to Mary, claiming that he had found them on the edges of her property. These letters were filled with horrible graphic descriptions of all kinds

of depravity. Samuel told Mary that they had been left by a witch and that he could help protect her from the evil curse that the witch would place upon her.

Mary was so grateful to Samuel and eventually she fell in love with him. They began an affair that would last for three years. Even though they were lovers, Mary paid Samuel handsomely for his help to keep the evil at bay.

For his part, Samuel made sure that Mary believed that the witch was still around. He did this with more letters, strange relics made from twigs, and by strange knockings and thumping on the side of Mary’s house. After these “attacks”, Mary would summon Samuel who would perform a ritual that would chase the witch away, at least temporarily.

Samuel warned Mary not to share the true nature of their relationship with anyone, but Mary was so smitten by Samuel that she spoke of him often in her letters to her family. She told them of her love for Samuel and of wishes that they could marry. Samuel grew tired of his mistress and her increasing demands that he leave his wife. So, Samuel decided that he would use the witch one last time to help rid himself of Mary.

Samuel came to Mary and told her that the witch had offered to help Mary get her heart’s desire. In order to win the heart of her beloved, she need only fake a hanging. By hanging herself “just a bit”, she would cause the death of Samuel’s wife. Then the couple could be together as she had hoped for so long.

Mary was overjoyed and agreed to Samuel’s evil plan. They practiced the hanging for several weeks until Mary grew more comfortable with the rope around her neck. Finally in the fall of 1894, Samuel decided that the day had arrived and went through the now familiar ritual. This time he moved the chair a little

further away from Mary so she could barely reach it. As she began to struggle for air, he broke down and put the stool back under her feet, sparing her.

When he returned a few days later he told Mary that when he reached his house, his wife was unconscious on the floor. He emphasized his belief their plan would work. They need only go a little farther with the hanging.

Mary stepped up on the stool and put the noose around her neck. The last thing she saw was Samuel reach over and move the chair completely away from her reach.  He stood in the room and watched her struggle. When it seemed to be taking too long, he wrapped his arms around her legs and pulled until she stopped moving.

Neighbors noticed that Mary wasn’t out doing chores for a couple of days. When they went to check on her, they found Mary hanging from the rope. Though Samuel spent time setting up the room to look like a suicide, they were a few things that troubled the authorities.

The main clue that troubled Sheriff Silbaugh, the man in charge of solving the crime, was the chair that Mary had stood on to reach the rope. Usually in suicides the chair would be knocked over and fall right under the person. This chair was set back a few feet but still upright.

There were also several items missing from the house including $300.00 and a special watch given to Mary by her father. The watch was a prized possession of Mary’s that she always wore.

The way the rope was tied also bothered the man put in charge of solving the mystery. When Sheriff Silbaugh testified of his findings to Coroner’s Jury, they came back with a “death at the hands of persons unknown” ruling.

That person wouldn’t stay unknown for long. Mary’s brother, Daniel traveled from Missouri to make sure the authorities got

justice for his sister. He told them every detail that his sister had shared in her letters. When the authorities questioned the surrounding neighbors, they too stated that Buxton had been visiting Mary at all hours of the day and night.

Mary had saved all the letters from Buxton and the witch, so the authorities had the proof they needed to arrest him. Mary’s neighbors and friends were outraged and formed a vigilante posse and marched upon the jail at Viroqua where Samuel was being held. The Sheriff had to smuggle Buxton out the back to save him from a lynching. He was kept in Sparta to await his trial.

Samuel was so frightened by the near lynching that he pled guilty to the murder of Mary Jonas. The newspapers said the actual trial was very short and “took longer to write about then witness”. The trial had lasted long enough for the judge to sentence Buxton to life in prison. He was sent to the Wisconsin State Prison in Waupun, Wisconsin. He died there on June 27, 1900 and was buried in an unmarked grave in the prison cemetery.

Mary was laid to rest next to her beloved father in the Viroqua Cemetery not far from her family home in the Kickapoo Township. The story of her murder spread and was carried in newspapers all over the United States from New York to San Antonio, Texas, and San Francisco to North Carolina. The strange nature of Mary’s murder continues to intrigue people even to this day.

The fall is the perfect time to make your first compost pile. As your summer garden ends, you’ve now got a lot of green material. While raking up the leaves from trees in your yard, you’ve got your brown material. So all that’s needed is to get these together to start the process of compost.

Compost is a great ingredient to use in the garden. It tends to feed the micro-organisms in the soil that are involved in soil nutrient cycling. Compost adds to the soil organic matter, helping your soil do a better job for you. Poorly compacted soils

Making your compost pile

can usually be addressed overtime with adding compost to your soil. One of the few weaknesses of compost is that it has low N-P-K. Usually I do not recommend it for a seasonal fertilizer as the N-P-K values are sometimes 0.25-0.25-0.25 and by comparison, your vegetable plants depend on a fertilizer of say 10-10-10.

To start a compost pile, you will want a ratio of 2 parts green to 1 part brown. The green ingredients will be your vegetable debris, kitchen scraps, and others. As you decide on your green ingredients, make sure to avoid any that are heavily diseased. While compost should reach

Survival thinking

The recent cool spell reminds us of approaching fall and winter. Squirrels are busy gathering and hiding nuts to survive the approaching cold of winter. Migratory birds are practicing group fl ights to head toward warmer areas. We too need to adjust our lives to deal with changing weather and economic conditions.

The economic challenges already being endured include high energy, food, and housing costs. Another round of rising interest rates is likely to result in an economic recession, adding stress to the family budget.

We were recently informed that a farmer in south central Wisconsin is selling firewood for $285/cord. The split fi rewood is located behind his barn; the farmer will load the wood on the customer’s wagon but will not deliver it. The high price surprised us and led to our providing an historic perspective on our early experiences with staying warm in winter, sharing experiences of both of our childhoods.

We never forgot the energy experiences guided by simple admonishments to turn o the lights, shut the door and put on a sweater if you’re cold. There was no opportunity to adjust the thermostat to

the right temperature to kill o any of those pathogens that cause disease next summer, you will still want to be vigilante. Grass and weeds could also be added to the compost as long as you are leaving out the weed seed heads. Of kitchen scraps, avoid any that include dairy, fats, and oils as these do not compost. Your brown ingredients are leaves, twigs, and other wood products. These will need to be cut up/shredded in order to create a more even layer and to get your compost started. Compost can be made in a pile in your growing area. You can add to it over time. You can also purchase a compost bin or

make your own three compost system. A bin can work well as most are designed for you to easily turn. They have ventilation and you can place it near a hose to add water. A three bin compost system is usually designed with the ease of adding large amounts of compost ingredients. This system works well when you have manure or a lot of green material to get rid of. With the three bin design, you’ll have one that is ready, another that is mid-compost, and another that is just getting started.

a comfortable setting. Heating systems were coal furnaces with supplemental heat from a small portable heater. Our homes cooled down overnight and fires were rekindled in the morning. Dressing in the morning was over a register which funneled heat from the rekindled fire to the living space.

We did not have showers or instant hot water. We bathed on Saturday nights. A gas water heater was lit to heat a set amount of water. Since the amount of warm water was limited a tea kettle of hot water supplemented the cool bath water.

Some holiday gifts were toys but others were clothing appropriate to the approaching season with our parents reminding us the comfort they would provide in winter.

Our mothers baked bread which ensured a warm kitchen for part of the day.

Another simple way to add low cost energy to provide personal warmth is a bowl of hot soup, herbal tea or hot chocolate.

We did not ride to school in a heated school bus or in a car provided by a parent. We walked to school and dressed to retain body heat during the cold weather. The hands, feet and face were hardest to keep warm.

If the house temperature was lowered, we dressed warmly including a warm hat since most heat is lost through the head. Electricity can be saved by shutting o

computer games and reintroducing board games like monopoly, carom or simple card games. Playing them was a common practice in our youth and provided a social experience for families and friends. To increase personal comfort a blanket can be placed over the table and onto the laps of people sitting there.

A local real estate broker recently informed us that they set the thermostat in an empty house at 55°F to prevent water pipes from freezing and to keep the energy bills low. It is a strategy worth considering to save heating bills but it is essential to ensure water pipes are suciently protected from freezing.

Beyond personal adjustments cutting down on energy use are simple changes in the house. Air leaks through doors, windows and entry points of wires and pipes can be caulked or weather stripped to decrease heat loss.

Windows are a major source of heat loss as single pane windows only resist one unit of heat loss. Resistance to heat loss doubles with another pane and triples if a third pane is included. Covering even ecient windows with a layer of clear plastic cuts heat loss and reduces drafts.

For a year round solution adding insulating drapes cuts heat loss and increases comfort.

Beyond the simple adjustments from an earlier time, an energy audit provides suggestions on how to reduce overall energy consumption in a home.
