Artist John Bell transforms nature’s relic’s into captivating bird sculptures for ArtScene Kortman exhibit: Rockford native John Bell sees inspiration for his work in nature’s fragments such as fallen tree branches, driftwood, or an abandoned wasp nest. Natural relics that he discovers become the found ingredients for creating unusual and captivating sculptures of birds. Bell’s sculptures along with his evocative paintings will be featured in his solo exhibition, “John’s Birds” opening in the Kortman Gallery, Downtown Rockford (ArtScene weekend). The unusual shapes and the colorful enhancements of Bell’s natural finds add to the eccentric characteristics of his sculptural birds giving them a sense of motion and fascination. The same sensibility in Bell’s sculptures can also be seen in his almost abstract paintings.

“I think of myself as a figurative artist whose work depicts birds as verbs rather than nouns,” says Bell. “While I always begin with a suggestive stick or particularly evocative brushstroke, the finished sculptures and paintings end up caring very little for my initial intentions. I choose to describe their own bodily limits and define their own space by pacing out the edges of their territory on the canvas or pedestal.” Bell, a Rockford native, shows his artwork in park districts, natural history museums, and the bed of his pick-up truck, primarily in the Midwest. He currently lives and works in St. Paul, Minnesota, with his wife, Alanna, two dogs, and cat. “I hope my work can serve as a small reminder that life does not proceed rationally— it constantly reinvents itself, bubbling over any container that we try to put around it,” said Bell. Gallery director, Doc Slafkosky says this is third exhibition Bell has presented in the Kortman Gallery. “John has shown his intriguing art with us in 2008 and 2012,” said Slafkosky. “His first show in our gallery was with his twin Sister, Katie, who is also a successful artist now living in Brooklyn. The “John’s Birds” show follow’s his mom’s exhibit, “Silk Scenes” by Sarah Bell in the Kortman Gallery. It’s wonderful to see this much creativity and talent in one family!”

“John’s Birds” featuring sculptures & paintings by John Bell will open with receptions on April 19th & 20th, Friday, 5 to 9pm & Saturday, 4 to 9m. upstairs in the Kortman Gallery, 107 North Main Street in Downtown Rockford. His exhibit will run through June 30th. J.R. Kortman Center for Design and Kortman Gallery are open Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 6pm and Saturdays, 11am to 5pm. The opening event and gallery are free and open to the public. For more information visit jrkortman.com or call 815-968-0123.

Lawmakers, cannabis industry calls for ban on ‘delta-8’ and other psychoactive hemp products

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ largest cannabis business association is pushing to ban the sale of delta-8 THC, an increasingly popular psychoactive substance that’s popped up in corner stores across the country in recent years.

New legislation fi led in Springfield this week revives an ongoing debate over delta-8 and other hemp-derived products, which are totally unregulated in Illinois even as the state approaches the five-year anniversary of legalizing cannabis.

For those who’ve been trying to break into Illinois’ still-young cannabis industry, the state’s inaction on delta-8 is an insult to the thousands of dollars and years of work that some business operators have put into trying to get their businesses o the ground.

“It is deeply disheartening and, frankly, a betrayal by the state to allow these shops to pop up and call themselves dispensaries,” Ron Miller, a co-owner of his family-run Navada Labs and BLYSS Dispensary in Mt. Vernon, said at a Capitol news conference Thursday.

And for the industry’s lead lobbying group, the Cannabis Business Association of Illinois, delta-8 represents other threats, including continued reports of Americans getting sick after consuming unregulated products, and the growing eorts to market delta-8 to young people.

At that news conference, CBAI Executive Director Tiany Ingram stood next to a

table filled with delta-8-infused candy and snacks in packaging strikingly similar to the multi-national brands they were designed to imitate. In one hand, Ingram held up a bag of Fritos corn chips and a similar-looking bag of “Fritos” snacks with small cannabis leaves on it.

Additionally, Ingram said, without having to pay cannabis-related taxes or other compliance costs, delta-8 businesses are not only undercutting legitimate licensed dispensaries, but the price is also accessible to kids.

“It says on the door you can only be 21 to come in,” Ingram told Capitol News Illinois of her trips to faux dispensaries in Chicago’s South Loop and Uptown neighborhoods to purchase some of the delta-8 products on display at the news conference. “But no one checked my ID.”

State Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado, D-Chicago, said her 15-year-old daughter has told her that delta-8 products are very accessible to her peers.

“As a parent, there is nothing more scary than to hear stories from your child about how kids are ‘greening out,’” she said. “And when I asked her questions like, ‘Hey, are these kids getting the supply from their parents?’ ...She says, ‘Oh no, we just go to the corner store.’”

In addition to selling the products at corner stores and gas stations, delta-8-focused bakeries have also become a business model in the city of Chicago, according to reporting from the Chicago Sun-Times.

Under Senate Bill 3926, businesses caught selling delta-8 or other unregulated hemp-derived products would face a $10,000 fine. Ingram acknowledged that the threat of fines is only as good as an enforcement mechanism but said the law would at least allow the state’s Department of Agriculture to investigate the businesses.

Additionally, the bill would create 50 new state licenses for legitimate cannabis dispensaries and 50 new licenses for cannabis infusers, which Ingram said could help bring entrepreneurs currently selling delta-8 into the fold. The measure would also require a state task force to study delta-8 products to ensure their safety, which Ingram characterized as more of a “pause” than an outright ban.

But those already operating in the delta-8 space said the bill would amount to an outright ban on delta-8 and other hemp-derived products.

Glenn McElfresh, a co-founder of Chicagobased hemp-derived beverage company Plift, called Thursday’s news conference “very frustrating and full of inaccuracies.”

“Many of the claims made today do not represent the thousands of businesses who produce or sell safe, accurately labeled, and tested products,” he said.

State Rep. LaShawn Ford, D-Chicago, has been pushing for regulation of delta-8 products, warning that prohibiting them would undermine the criminal justice goals of legalizing cannabis in Illinois. Ford and state Sen. Lakesia Collins, D-Chicago, are pushing a pair of bills that would restrict the sale of delta-8 products to anyone under 21, along with taxing them and creating a new class of state licenses for hemp businesses.

“We don’t want to regulate thousands of current businesses out of existence,” Collins said in a statement. “We want regulation, not termination, when jobs and opportunity are at stake, especially in Black and brown communities.”

Hemp and marijuana are both derived from cannabis plants, but hemp can only contain 0.3 percent or less THC. If it contains more THC than that, it is considered marijuana. In 2018, the annual federal “Farm Bill” made the distribution and sale of hemp and its byproducts legal federally. Rhubarb season is quickly upon us. I have been eagerly watching my plant every day this last week as it begins to emerge from the soil. This perennial plant thrives in the Midwest and produces large petioles, or leaf stalks, that are used in many dishes. As any true rhubarb-lover will tell you, the red and green stalks are eaten but the large leaves are not due to oxalic acid. Instead of waiting for someone to share their rhubarb with you, perhaps this is the year that you grow it. With proper selection and planting, rhubarb plants can last 10-15 years though

some growers have rhubarb that is 20+ years.

Because rhubarb is a perennial and comes back year after year, you want to consider where you are planting it. An area that receives full sun and is well drained will be the best location. Furthermore, the soil should be neither poor quality or contain heavy clay. Rhubarb is tolerant of a wide range of soil pH. The plant, however, removes a great amount of soil nutrients, and you should add compost and aged manure each year. Most likely one plant is sucient for your family. You’ll fi nd that once the plant reaches maturity that the amount

Growing rhubarb

of stalks you are able to harvest will be quite enough. Rhubarb varieties are distinguished by either red or green petioles (stalks). Recommended red varieties include ‘Canada Red’, ‘Cherry Red’, ‘Crimson Red’, ‘MacDonald’, ‘Ruby’, and ‘Valentine’ while a good green variety is ‘Victoria’. There is not much dierence in flavor between these varieties though the green variety when cooked loses it’s color. Rhubarb harvest is based on the age of the plant which dictates how many weeks you can harvest. You never harvest rhubarb from the planting year as the plant needs to spend this season developing it’s rhizome. Removing stalks in the

planting year will result in poor performance of the plant for years to come. In it’s 2nd year, you can harvest 1-2 weeks. In it’s 3rd year and on, you can harvest 8-10 weeks. I planted a single rhubarb plant for my family in 2021 so am now in an 8-10 week harvest period. Ideally, you should not harvest everything but instead leave about a 1/3 of the stalks behind over the course of the season.

Next week, I’ll go into more detail on growing rhubarb.

Impacts of technological changes

When we were children, our families relied on burning wood and coal to keep warm in winter. In late summer workers carried stacks of wood and buckets of coal and poured them into a chute on which the fuel slid into a basement coal bin. Our mothers kept the fi res burning.

We had small wood or kerosene stoves to allow us to dress for school in a warm area. The bathroom had an electric or kerosene heater to warm the room when we took baths.

When natural gas became widely available new furnaces were installed. Our mothers were very pleased with them as they no longer had to tend the fi re in the basement and felt the house was cleaner. Their only regret was that they missed steady wood heat.

Other technological changes made life easier and more convenient. As the economy boomed following World War II adverse environment impacts grew along with new technologies. As environmental deterioration expanded, the

public reacted to it with the fi rst Earth Day on April 22, 1970.

All technologies and services require energy to create and maintain. As energy consumption increased, climate change from burning fossil fuels emerged as a leading environmental issue.

Currently methane releases are recognized as impacting climate change, gaining far more attention with new EPA rules directed at cutting their releases.

Since they are considered responsible for about one-third of current global warming, sharp cuts in methane emissions are recognized as eectively slowing climate change.

One target of methane emissions is limiting routine flaring of natural gas from new oil wells and recovering it for useful purposes. Increasing monitoring of well sites and compressors detects methane leaks. Establishing standards ensures substantial emission reductions. Other harmful pollutants from oil and gas facilities such as sulfur will also be controlled. The US EPA has a summary of the rules on its website.

A new rule creates a Super Emitter

Program which involves remote sensing to identify large methane releases which account for nearly half of oil and gas industry emissions. The Super Emitter program was based on the results of a 2014 study of an uncapped well in Pennsylvania identified as the site of the world’s largest methane releases. The study estimated that the escaping gas could heat an average Canadian home for about 34 years.

Andrew Nikiforuk stated that a new study reported 238 abandoned and unplugged wells in Alberta and Saskatchewan with double or triple the methane releases in Pennsylvania, roughly equal to the emissions of 1.5 million cars. It is also estimated that as many as 400,000 inactive and unplugged wells could exist in Canada. While the new methane rules only apply to the US, the Canadian studies illustrate the growing awareness of the methane problem.

In response to a court challenge of the new methane rules, the Environmental Law and Policy Center has joined with 10 other leading health, environmental and community groups in fi ling a motion

with the US Court of Appeals in DC to defend the EPA’s right to limit on methane pollution from new and existing sources of oil and gas.

For a broader perspective on the new EPA methane regulations and the ELPC involvement, visit EPA and ELPC press releases.

Only 26% of Americans say they get at least eight hours of sleep, new Gallup poll says

NEW YORK (AP) — If you’re feeling — YAWN — sleepy or tired while you read this and wish you could get some more shut-eye, you’re not alone. A majority of Americans say they would feel better if they could have more sleep, according to a new poll.

But in the U.S., the ethos of grinding and pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps is ubiquitous, both in the country’s beginnings and our current environment of always-on technology and work hours. And getting enough sleep can seem like a dream.

The Gallup poll, released Monday, found 57% of Americans say they would feel better if they could get more sleep, while only 42% say they are getting as much sleep as they need. That’s a first in Gallup polling since 2001; in 2013, when Americans were last asked, it was just about the reverse — 56% saying they got the needed sleep and 43% saying they didn’t.

Younger women, under the age of 50, were especially likely to report they aren’t getting enough rest.

The poll also asked respondents to report how many hours of sleep they usually get per night: Only 26% said they got eight or more hours, which is around the amount that sleep experts say is recommended for health and mental well-being. Just over half, 53%, reported getting six to seven hours. And 20% said they got five hours or less, a jump from the 14% who reported getting the least amount of sleep in 2013.

(And just to make you feel even more tired, in 1942, the vast majority of Americans were sleeping more. Some 59% said they slept eight or more hours, while 33% said they slept six to seven hours. What even IS that?)

THE REASONS AREN’T EXACTLY CLEAR

The poll doesn’t get into reasons WHY Americans aren’t getting the sleep they need, and since Gallup last asked the question in 2013, there’s no data breaking down the particular impact of the last four years and the pandemic era.

But what’s notable, says Sarah Fioroni, senior researcher at Gallup, is the shift in the last decade toward more Americans thinking they would benefit from more sleep and particularly the jump in the

number of those saying they get five or less hours.

“That five hours or less category ... was almost not really heard of in 1942,” Fioroni said. “There’s almost nobody that said they slept five hours or less.”

In modern American life, there also has been “this pervasive belief about how sleep was unnecessary — that it was this period of inactivity where little to nothing was actually happening and that took up time that could have been better used,” said Joseph Dzierzewski, vice president for research and scientific affairs at the National Sleep Foundation.

It’s only relatively recently that the importance of sleep to physical, mental and emotional health has started to percolate more in the general population, he said.

And there’s still a long way to go. For some Americans, like Justine Broughal, 31, a self-employed event planner with two small children, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. So even though she recognizes the importance of sleep, it often comes in below other priorities like her 4-month-old son, who still wakes up throughout the night, or her 3-year-old daughter.

“I really treasure being able to spend time with (my children),” Broughal says. “Part of the benefit of being self-employed is that I get a more flexible schedule, but it’s definitely often at the expense of my own care.”

THERE’S A CULTURAL BACKDROP TO ALL THIS, TOO

So why are we awake all the time? One likely reason for Americans’ sleeplessness is cultural — a longstanding emphasis on industriousness and productivity.

Some of the context is much older than the shift documented in the poll. It includes the Protestants from European countries who colonized the country, said Claude Fischer, a professor of sociology at the graduate school of the University of California, Berkeley. Their belief system included the idea that working hard and being rewarded with success was evidence of divine favor.

“It has been a core part of American culture for centuries,” he said. “You could make the argument that it ... in the secularized form over the centuries becomes just a general principle that the morally correct person is somebody who doesn’t waste their time.”

Jennifer Sherman has seen that in

action. In her research in rural American communities over the years, the sociology professor at Washington State University says a common theme among people she interviewed was the importance of having a solid work ethic. That applied not only to paid labor but unpaid labor as well, like making sure the house was clean.

A through line of American cultural mythology is the idea of being “individually responsible for creating our own destinies,” she said. “And that does suggest that if you’re wasting too much of your time ... that you are responsible for your own failure.”

“The other side of the coin is a massive amount of disdain for people considered lazy,” she added.

Broughal says she thinks that as parents, her generation is able to let go of some of those expectations. “I prioritize ... spending time with my kids, over keeping my house pristine,” she said.

But with two little ones to care for, she said, making peace with a messier house doesn’t mean more time to rest: “We’re spending family time until, you know, (my 3-year-old) goes to bed at eight and then we’re resetting the house, right?”

THE TRADEOFFS OF MORE SLEEP

While the poll only shows a broad shift over the past decade, living through the COVID-19 pandemic may have affected people’s sleep patterns. Also discussed in post-COVID life is “revenge bedtime procrastination,” in which people put off sleeping and instead scroll on social media or binge a show as a way of trying to handle stress.

Liz Meshel is familiar with that. The 30-year-old American is temporarily living in Bulgaria on a research grant, but also works a part-time job on U.S. hours to make ends meet.

On the nights when her work schedule stretches to 10 p.m., Meshel finds herself in a “revenge procrastination” cycle. She wants some time to herself to decompress before going to sleep and ends up sacrificing sleeping hours to make it happen.

“That applies to bedtime as well, where I’m like, ‘Well, I didn’t have any me time during the day, and it is now 10 p.m., so I am going to feel totally fine and justified watching X number of episodes of TV, spending this much time on Instagram, as my way to decompress,” she said. “Which obviously will always make the problem worse.”

Iran’s attack on Israel raises fears of a wider war, but all sides have also scored gains

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The unprecedented attack by Iran on Israel early Sunday ratcheted up regional tensions, confirming long-held fears about the Israel-Hamas war spiraling into a broader conflagration. But Iran, Israel, the United States and Hamas also walked away with some gains. Here’s a look at the fallout.

ISRAEL’S RESPONSE COULD RESTORE FAITH IN ITS MILITARY

As the more than 300 drones and missiles headed toward Israel in the early hours of Sunday, the country was able to successfully put to the test its aerial defense array, which, along with help from allies, blocked 99% of the projectiles and prevented any major damage.

By contrast, Israel’s military had suffered a bruising defeat at the hands of a far less equipped enemy when Hamas stormed from Gaza into Israel on Oct. 7.

That was a major blow to Israel’s image as a regional military powerhouse and shattered any sense of invincibility. The response to Iran’s attack could be what restores faith in the country’s military, even as its forces are bogged down in Gaza, more than six months after Israel declared war on Hamas there.

Israel has also boasted about the coalition of forces that helped it repel the Iranian assault. It’s a much-needed show of support at a time when Israel is at its most isolated because of concerns surrounding its conduct during the war against Hamas, including a worsening humanitarian crisis and a staggering death toll in Gaza.

IRAN SHOWS OFF ITS MIGHT

Iran vowed repeatedly that it would respond to an apparent Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Damascus on April 1 that killed two generals. Sunday’s assault allowed Iran to show to its citizens that it won’t stand by when its assets are

attacked and that it was serious when it threatened revenge.

With its strike, Iran was able to exhibit its fierce firepower, instill fear in some Israelis and disrupt the lives of many through school cancellations. But with little damage actually caused in Israel, Iran might hope that any response will be measured. Several hours after it launched the drones and missiles, Iran said the operation was over.

THE UNITED STATES STOOD BY ISRAEL

The U.S. was a key player in repelling the assault, demonstrating to its allies around the world the power and reliability of American support.

Now, as Israel mulls how and whether to respond, that alliance will be put to the test, with the Biden administration seeking to exert its leverage on Israel and prevent it from carrying out a response that might worsen the conflict.

HAMAS MAY BENEFIT FROM IRAN’S DIRECT INVOLVEMENT

Hamas, which is backed by Iran, welcomed the strike on Israel. Since launching its Oct. 7 attack, Hamas had hoped that regional partners might come to its assistance and drag Israel into a broader war. While some have done — including the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and Yemen’s Houthis — Iran had not directly entered the fray until Sunday.

Hamas could hope that the attack is the first salvo in deeper Iranian engagement in the war in Gaza. It also could hope that violence in the West Bank, where an Israeli teen was killed and settlers rampaged in Palestinian towns, continues to heat up. At the very least, Iran’s attack may have emboldened Hamas to dig in its heels in current negotiations over a cease-fire, hoping the increased military pressure on Israel might lead it to accept the militant group’s harder-line terms for a deal.

TAURUS

A spontaneous getaway with friends could be on the horizon. Travel could turn out to be more complicated than expected and communication could be difficult with certain people. Learn to let go when you’re faced with obstacles.

GEMINI

If you need to finance a project, a visit to the bank could be enough. Your determination will help you meet the right people. A romantic soul will stir your heart, even arousing a touch of jealousy.

CANCER

Harmony sometimes requires compromise. Prepare yourself for a demanding event at work that may not receive a quick response, even in an emergency. A certain situation will require you to be tactful and diplomatic.

LEO

You’ll be approached by numerous clients, some of whom may be difficult to please. Don’t take this personally and do your best. In your love life, avoid bottling up your frustrations.

VIRGO

If you’re single, sudden popularity could lead to love at first sight. Take the time to get to know the person before getting carried away by your feelings. You’ll greatly improve your efficiency after making certain changes in how you work.

LIBRA

You’ll finally succeed in selling your house or finding your dream home. If you’ve lived in the same home for several years, expect a few waves of nostalgia. The opportunity to take over a management position is on the horizon.

ARIES

LEO

You’ll discover a new form of spirituality beneficial to your mental and physical well-being. It could be a question of learning or sharing knowledge. This brilliant development will help you rediscover your zest for life.

VIRGO

Avoid repressing the emotions that are overwhelming you. Your family and friends will be there to support you in a difficult situation. Things will gradually become clearer, showing you the way to the solution to all your worries.

LIBRA

Relationships are simpler when you’re not emotionally involved. You could encounter tension with those closest to you. However, you and your friends and colleagues will understand each other perfectly. Take a step back if necessary.

SCORPIO

Important details will need your attention. A promotion could be on the horizon. However, you’ll need to negotiate your position with authority and define your responsibilities. People will be generous with you.

VIRGO

You’ll take the lead in a group and participate in many rewarding activities. Stress could wear you down at times. It will be important to rest before the end of the week to keep your spirits high.

LIBRA

You’ll temporarily fill in for the boss, which will catch you off guard. The boss could be suddenly absent for a variety of reasons. Be confident in your skills and you’ll demonstrate your ability to lead. You could add this position to your resume.

SCORPIO

If you must work with a client from abroad, worries about your language skills could arise. Rest assured; you’ll exceed your own expectations. A short training course could help you feel more easeful with your boss or customers.

SAGITTARIUS

A career change could take you back to school. Patience and hard work could help you out of a precarious financial situation and help you find better employment prospects.

CAPRICORN

You don’t often hesitate when faced with important decisions. However, this time, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. New information could emerge at the last minute, shedding light on the various options.

AQUARIUS

At work, you’ll be responsible for dealing with emergencies and unsatisfied customers. Fortunately, your positive attitude will help defuse tense situations and resolve problems effectively. You’ll be quite adept at selling or negotiating this week.
