House passes bill prohibiting book bans

Libraries would be disqualified from state grants

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House passed a bill Wednesday that would prohibit libraries from banning books or other material because of partisan or doctrinal pressure, prompting strong opposition from Republicans who called it an assault on local control.

House Bill 2789 is an initiative of Democratic Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, whose office oversees the Illinois State Library and administers several grant programs for public and school libraries as well as adult literacy programs throughout the state.

The bill would require that as a condition of qualifying for those grants in the future, libraries or library systems would have to adopt a written policy prohibiting the practice of banning books. Alternatively, they could adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which includes a statement that “(m) aterials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.”

The bill came in response to a wave of high-profile controversies throughout the country, including at least one in Illinois. School districts and public libraries have come under pressure to remove certain material from their collections, often material dealing with issues involving race, sexuality and gender identity.

“Banning books is the sort of behavior that was once, for good reason, associated with the worst, most repressive and repugnant authoritarian regimes of the mid-20th century and before,” the bill’s lead sponsor Rep. Anne Stava-Murray, D-Naperville, said during debate on the House floor. “The

fact that this is even up for discussion in America in the 21st century is disgusting. And yet, just last year in my district, that discussion was spurred on by a few radical parents and the Proud Boys hate group over a book called ‘Gender Queer.’”

That book is a memoir by Maia Kobabe about a nonbinary person grappling with issues of gender identity and sexuality as a teenager and young adult. According to the New York Times, it has been pulled from library shelves in dozens of school districts around the country.

One of the school districts that came under pressure to remove the book was Community High School District 99, in Downers Grove, in Stava-Murray’s district. According to a June 2022 Chicago Sun-Times story, the pressure was generated by a group of conservative parents and members of the Proud Boys, but students in the district pushed back and the board eventually voted unanimously to keep the book on the shelves.

“Students led a community-supported effort in my district to keep the book in the library,” Stava-Murray said. “But kids shouldn’t have to be the heroes… Nobody is forcing you or your children to check out or purchase or read these books. If they are not consistent with your personal beliefs, don’t read them.”

PEN American, in a report on book bans around the country, identified five enforced bans in the state between July 2021 and June 2022, including 3 bans of Gender Queer.

Some Republicans, however, argued that public libraries are governed by locally elected boards, and that those boards should have the authority to decide how best to serve their communities.

“I find this a complete assault on local control,” said Rep. Martin McLaughlin, R-Barrington Hills. “… These people volunteer as nonpartisan elected local officials, and for the state to tell a local library

board, ‘listen to the professionals; follow the professionals’ – I don’t understand why we have local elections anymore if a bill like this passes.”

Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer, R-Jacksonville, said that he used to serve on his local library board and when his own children visit the library, they are accompanied by a parent. But he said that is not necessarily the case when they are at school using the school library.

“I am not for banning books at all,” he said. “I am for age-appropriate materials. And so, if a parent wants their kid to have those age-appropriate materials, they can certainly get them for them. I don’t think that a librarian is the end-all, be-all decision maker in the state of Illinois on what books should be given to a child.”

Stava-Murray, however, rejected those arguments, saying the bill would only add another condition onto the rules to qualify for grants administered by the secretary of state. Last year, the office awarded more than 1,600 grants totaling more than $62 million, including a $4,300 grant to Downers Grove Community High School District 99.

“In terms of the argument about local control, I find that disgusting. Local Control has long been a dog whistle for allowing statewide or nationwide racist or bigoted policies to persist,” she said, eliciting loud boos from the Republican side of the aisle. “Today, I just strongly urge my colleagues to do the right thing and make sure that access to books is not infringed upon in our state.”

The bill passed the House 69-39 with all of the no votes coming from Republicans. Three Democrats and one Republican were recorded as present but not voting. The bill next goes to the Senate for consideration.

“Public and school libraries are facing unprecedented censorship of books and resources, not just in Illinois but throughout the nation,” Giannoulias said in a statement after the vote. “This important first-in-the-nation legislation combats book banning and upholds freedom of speech, which America has always stood for. I applaud the Illinois House of Representatives for passing this important measure and encourage the State Senate to do the same.”

Tax the rich? Chicago mayoral hopefuls debate city budget

CHICAGO (AP) — Ken Kunz used to know everyone in the North Side Chicago neighborhood where he’s lived for more than 40 years. But crossing paths with old friends is rare these days because longtime residents have been pushed out by new development and soaring property taxes.

When they do meet, the 64-year-old says, they exchange the same greeting: “I’m so glad you’re still here.”

Chicago has grown unaffordable for many working- and middle-class people like Kunz who have been “run over by development,” as he put it. That’s why he voted both in the February mayoral election and the upcoming runoff for Brandon Johnson, a former teacher and union organizer who has called for $800 million in new taxes on “the ultrarich.”

“It seems like he is at least willing to represent someone who makes as much money as I do,” said Kunz, who operates his own delivery business and manages the property where he lives, which helps make rent manageable. “I just want as much representation as the developer who’s building million-dollar condos around the corner from my house.”

How to balance Chicago’s steep financial challenges with residents’ concerns about the cost of living is among the many issues separating Johnson and Paul Vallas, the former schools CEO and onetime city budget director, before the April 4 runoff. The two Democrats advanced in last month’s vote, outdistancing Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Just as in many major cities, the debate over who should pay what in taxes has taken on increasing prominence post-pandemic. Some see this moment as a chance to rebuild the economy and ensure more equitable futures for residents, many of whom were struggling to get by even before COVID-19 hit. In Chicago, the task is complicated by concerns over violent crime, including homicide rates that spiked in recent years and have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.

Johnson is a progressive who has been endorsed and heavily funded by the Chicago Teachers Union. He has the backing of Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., along with other lawmakers and groups that have long pushed a tax-the-rich agenda.

Vallas is supported by many business leaders, including groups such as the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce

and the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association. He says he would rely on his budgeting expertise to find ways to cut spending and says Johnson’s plan would hurt not just the wealthy but also businesses that provide jobs and industries the city needs to thrive.

“He’s imposing taxes that are going to pummel the economy at a time when we could possibly be drifting into recession,” Vallas said during a recent debate.

Chicago’s fragile recovery is visible throughout the city.

Along the iconic shopping and tourist strip known as the Magnificent Mile, storefronts sit vacant, casualties of the pandemic, crime and retail trends that were moving away from in-person shopping even before COVID-19. In some areas, particularly in the city’s predominantly Black neighborhoods, people have left, leaving blocks with boarded-up homes and empty lots.

There are some bright spots on the economic front. Google recently bought a state-owned building in the heart of the Loop to serve as a second headquarters. A long-sought casino was approved and will bring both jobs and revenue.

But Chicago is at a crossroads, dealing with historic inflation, skyrocketing property taxes and the lingering effects of the pandemic, said Jack Lavin, president and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce.

Lavin and other business leaders credited Vallas for his plan to address crime, a major concern among businesses. The union that represents Chicago police has endorsed Vallas, who wants to hire hundreds of officers, while Johnson has been criticized over past comments in support of “defunding” police — something Johnson insists he will not do. Johnson has called for investing more in areas such as youth jobs and mental health care rather than adding more officers.

“We need to do things that are going to encourage people to come back to the office, encourage people to get out and go to shows and conventions to come here, and tourism because that’s a big piece of our economy,” Lavin said.

Johnson says Chicago needs new revenue to offset a freeze on property taxes while investing in other areas, including housing and schools.

His plan includes reinstating a $4-a-month-per-employee “head tax” on large companies, charging big airlines “for polluting the air” in Chicago and taxing financial transactions made in the

city. He also wants to impose a so-called mansion tax, or real estate transfer tax on high-end home sales, and increase the hotel tax.

Johnson described the additional hotel tax as an extra $1 per room that most people wouldn’t notice. But Michael Jacobson, president of the Illinois Hotel and Lodging Association, said it could add up to serious damage for Chicago’s bottom line because, without “palm trees or mountains,” most of the city’s visitors come for conventions.

Jacobson that when convention planners are shopping around for host cities, an extra charge on large blocks of hotel rooms — on top of already higher-than-average lodging taxes — could mean those planners go elsewhere.

Johnson, who turns 47 on Monday, has criticized Vallas for not laying out how he would handle Chicago’s budget deficit without increasing taxes on people who cannot afford it. Johnson has called the 69-year-old Vallas, who was budget director and Chicago schools CEO under then-Mayor Richard M. Daley, part of “the politics of old.”

“If he actually had a plan, he’d put forward a plan,” Johnson said. “He’s not putting forward a budget plan because he’s going to raise your property taxes.”

Vallas says he would look at the city’s entire budget to find efficiencies and “work to avoid” taxes. The one thing he definitely wouldn’t do, he said, is propose $800 million in taxes “right out of the box.”

Vallas, who also ran schools in New Orleans, Philadelphia and Bridgeport, Connecticut, says his experience makes him the better choice to handle the city’s massive budget amid tumultuous times. He criticized Johnson, who serves on the Cook County Board of Commissioners, as lacking the experience needed for the job.

“Bottom line is, Brandon has run nothing,” Vallas said.

But Kunz, the longtime North Side resident, said it’s time for Chicago to try a new way forward. While the business community may support Vallas, Kunz doesn’t think business has the best interest of the people of Chicago at heart. So, he figures, why not tax the rich?

“Who else are you going to tax, the average person making $40,000 or $50,000 a year? They’re taxed out. They simply can’t afford it,” Kunz said. “Let’s see what happens.”

Russia-Belarus Nuclear Weapons

Why does Russia want tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus?

The announcement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that he intends to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus appears to be another attempt to raise the stakes in the conflict in Ukraine.

It follows Putin’s warnings that Moscow is ready to use “all available means,” to fend off attacks on Russian territory, a reference to its nuclear arsenal. A look at Putin’s statement and its implications:

HOW DID PUTIN EXPLAIN HIS MOVE?

Putin said President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has long urged Moscow to station its nuclear weapons in his country, which has close military ties with Russia and was a staging ground for the invasion of neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

Russia already has helped modernize Belarusian warplanes to make them capable of carrying nuclear weapons — something that Belarus’ authoritarian leader has repeatedly mentioned.

In remarks broadcast Saturday, Putin said the immediate trigger for the deployment of Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus was Britain’s decision to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing shells containing depleted uranium. Putin toned down his language after first falsely claiming that such rounds have nuclear components, but he insisted they pose an additional danger to the civilian population and could contaminate the environment.

Putin also said that by stationing tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Russia will be doing what the United States has done for decades by putting its nuclear weapons in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey. He alleged the Russian move doesn’t violate an international treaty banning the proliferation of nuclear weapons, even though Moscow has argued before that the U.S. has breached the pact by deploying them on the territory of its NATO allies.

Putin’s move contrasted with a statement he and Chinese President Xi Jinping issued after their talks in the Kremlin last week, which spoke against nuclear powers deploying atomic weapons outside their territories, in an apparent jab at the United States.

WHAT ARE TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPONS?

Tactical nuclear weapons are intended to destroy enemy troops and weapons on the battlefield. They have a relatively short range and a much lower yield than

nuclear warheads fitted to long-range strategic missiles that are capable of obliterating whole cities.

Unlike the strategic weapons, which have been subject to arms control agreements between Moscow and Washington, the tactical weapons never have been limited by any such pacts, and Russia hasn’t released any numbers in its arsenal or other specifics related to them.

The U.S. government believes Russia has about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons, which include bombs that can be carried by aircraft, warheads for short-range missiles and artillery rounds.

While strategic nuclear weapons are fitted to land- or submarine-based intercontinental ballistic missiles that are constantly ready for launch, tactical nuclear weapons are stored at a few tightly guarded storage facilities in Russia, and it takes time to deliver them to combat units.

Some Russian hawks long have urged the Kremlin to send a warning to the West by moving some tactical nuclear weapons closer to the aircraft and missiles intended to deliver them.

WHAT EXACTLY WILL RUSSIA DO?

Putin said Russia already has helped upgrade 10 Belarusian aircraft to allow them to carry nuclear weapons and their crews will start training to use them from April 3. He noted Russia also has given Belarus the Iskander short-range missile systems that can be fitted with conventional or nuclear warheads.

He said the construction of storage facilities for nuclear weapons in Belarus will be completed by July 1. He didn’t say how many nuclear weapons will be stationed there or when they will be deployed.

Putin emphasized that Russia will retain control over any nuclear weapons deployed to Belarus, just like the U.S. controls its tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of its NATO allies.

If Moscow sends nuclear weapons to Belarus, it will mark their first deployment outside Russian borders since the early 1990s. Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan inherited massive nuclear arsenals after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 but agreed to ship them to Russia in the following years.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES BEHIND PUTIN’S MOVE?

With his latest statement, Putin again is dangling the nuclear threat to signal Moscow’s readiness to escalate the war in Ukraine.

The deployment of tactical nucle-

ar weapons to Belarus, which has a 1,084-kilometer (673-mile) border with Ukraine, would allow Russian aircraft and missiles to reach potential targets there more easily and quickly if Moscow decides to use them. It would also extend Russia’s capability to target several NATO members in Eastern and Central Europe.

The move comes as Kyiv is poised for a counteroffensive to reclaim territory occupied by Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, warned last week that attempts by Ukraine to reclaim control over Crimea was a threat to “the very existence of the Russian state,” something that warrants a nuclear response under the country’s security doctrine. Russia illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

“Every day of supplying Western weapons to Ukraine makes the nuclear apocalypse closer,” Medvedev said.

Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said Putin’s goal is to discourage Ukraine’s Western allies from providing Kyiv with more weapons ahead of any counteroffensive.

Putin is “using nuclear blackmail in a bid to influence the situation on the battlefield and force Western partners to reduce supplies of weapons and equipment under the threat of nuclear escalation,” Zhdanov said. “The Belarusian nuclear balcony will be looming over not only Ukraine, but Europe as well, creating a constant threat, raising tensions and rattling the nerves of Ukrainians and

their Western partners.”

WHAT ARE UKRAINE AND THE WEST SAYING?

Ukraine has responded to Putin’s move by calling for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

“The world must be united against someone who endangers the future of human civilization,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Monday that U.S. officials “haven’t seen any movement of any tactical nuclear weapons or anything of that kind” since Putin’s announcement on Belarus. He has said Washington has seen nothing to prompt a change in its strategic deterrent posture.

NATO rejects Putin’s claim that Russia only is doing what the U.S. has done for decades, saying the Western allies act with full respect of their international commitments.

“Russia’s nuclear rhetoric is dangerous and irresponsible,” NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said, adding that the alliance hasn’t yet seen any change in Russia’s nuclear posture.

Lithuania, which borders Belarus, described Putin’s statement as “yet another attempt by two unpredictable dictatorial regimes to threaten their neighbors and the entire European continent,” calling them “desperate moves by Putin and Lukashenko to create another wave of tension and destabilization in Europe.”

General Hospital turns 60

When ABC’s daytime drama General Hospital debuted April 1, 1963, it was one of roughly 15 soap operas airing on just three networks. It outlasted them all. Today, it’s the United State’s longest-running daytime drama still in production.

Last year GH set a record with its 15th Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. Over the years it’s grown from a 30-minute show with organ music into an hour-long series and cultural phenomenon – the 1981 wedding of super couple Luke [Anthony Geary] and Laura [Genie Francis] drew a 30 million viewers and a guest appearance by movie icon Elizabeth Taylor as the villainous Helena Cassadine.

A couple months ago, I spoke with several cast members and current executive producer Frank Valentini about GH’s 60th anniversary for a four-page spread in emmy magazine. All of their comments

didn’t fit in that article, so here a few insights you might enjoy.

“Around the 50th anniversary, the show was not doing that well,” admits Valentini, still relatively new to the show at that time. “That was right after One Life to Live and All My Children got cancelled, so we needed to take some big swings. And there were some homeruns – critically, with the fans, and with the ratings. It was risky, because you don’t want to mess with legacy, but to enrich and continue to weave the tapestry of the legacy. You have to take some chances and introduce new threads. And we’ve been able to do that fairly successfully.”

Finola Hughes, who’s played Anna Devane off and on since 1985, understands it’s the fans who keep the show going. She often hears from fans about theories on what really happened to Anna when everyone thought she was dead.

“There’s a ‘tanker baby’ that everyone thinks exists, from when Robert [Tristan

Rogers] and Anna were supposedly killed by Faison [Anders Hove], in ’92. Of course, we weren’t killed, but apparently we lived on a tanker somewhere out in the Pacific Northwest,” Hughes says, laughing, well aware anything is possible on soap operas.

Like a couple years ago when Carly and Sonny [Laura Wright and Maurice Benard] learned they were having another baby.

“Maurice and I were both like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ We couldn’t stop laughing and shaking our heads because it was really funny. Then we fell in love with the story,” Wright says. “But when they first handed that to us, I thought ‘What? I have to wear that fake rubber belly again? I thought I’d retired those days!”

Hughes and Wright both appreciate the care Valentini and the show’s writers take in depicting strong women. In recent years, Anna and Felicia [Kristina Wagner] have taken down a couple of bad guys, and now Francis’ Laura – the current

Mayor of Port Charles – is helping them pursue the latest Cassadine villain, Victor [Charles Shaughnessy].

Other strong women include the city’s police commissioner, Jordan Ashford [Tanisha Harper], attorney-turned-editor Alexis Davis [Nancy Lee Grahn], and mob boss Selina Wu [Lydia Look]. All of them more than hold their own against the men of Port Charles.

One of those men being Benard’s coffee-importing mobster, Sonny Corinthos.

“Frank Valentini came in and pretty much saved our jobs,” Benard says. “This is my 30th year with the show. I know I keep saying I’m gonna leave with every contract, but it hasn’t happened yet.”

Hopefully ABC’s last-remaining daytime drama will have more milestones to celebrate in the future.

General Hospital airs Monday through Friday on ABC (WTVO) or streamed on ABC.com or Hulu.

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ comes out blazing with $73.5M

NEW YORK (AP) — “John Wick: Chapter 4,” the fourth installment in the Keanu Reeves assassin series, debuted with a franchise-best $73.5 million at the box office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Lionsgate film, starring Reeves as the reluctant-but-not-that-reluctant killer John Wick, exceeded both expectations and previous opening weekends in the R-rated franchise. Since first launching in 2014 with “John Wick” ($14 million on its opening weekend), the Chad Stahelski-directed series has steadily grown as a ticket-seller with each sequel. The 2017 follow-up opened with $30.4 million, and the 2019 third chapter, “Parabellum,” debuted with $56.8 million.

But “Chapter 4,” running two hours and 49 minutes and costing at least $100 million to produce, is the biggest film yet in the once-lean action series. Critics also said it was a franchise high point, scoring 95% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which drew a 69% male audience, added $64 million overseas. It’s Lionsgate’s biggest success of the pandemic era.

“When you make a fourth in an

action franchise, you have to expect it to go down. That is the nature of these franchises,” said Joe Drake, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “But we kept seeing signals and it was wonderful to see the movie they delivered. We saw the audience wanting more.”

Though “John Wick” has been bigger at the box office with each new release — an enviable and rare trajectory among Hollywood franchises — “Chapter 4” brings some finality to Reeves’ character. The actor hasn’t entirely dismissed continuing the series, telling interviewers “never say never.”

Regardless, the franchise is set to keep humming. A spin-off titled “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas and co-starring Reeves has already been shot. The miniseries “The Continental,” with Mel Gibson, is upcoming on Peacock.

“Chad and Keanu have created this world and that world continues to expand. I don’t know what all the edges of that world are, still,” said Drake. “As best they can, they’ll continue to try to seduce Keanu to come back and do things. He gets beat up in these shows. He really does. And at the end he’s like, ‘I’m not doing it anymore.’ Then you watch him sit in the theater and feel that audience.”

“So we’re going to continue to look for ways to meet that demand.”

The release of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which included a surprise premiere at SXSW, was also bittersweet. Lance Reddick, who plays the Continental Hotel concierge, Charon, in the films, unexpectedly died at the age of 60 a week before the film’s release.

But the success of “John Wick: Chapter 4” adds to a strong start in 2023 for Hollywood. After ticket sales rebounded to about 67% of pre-pandemic levels last year, the release lineup is steadier and more packed this year. Sequels have led the way, including “Creed III” and “Scream VI.” Ticket sales are up 28% from last year, according to data firm Comscore.

But there have been some exceptions. After its disappointing $30.5 million debut last weekend, the superhero sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” slumped to second place with $9.7 million in its second weekend. The Warner Bros. release dropped steeply, tumbling 68% from its launch.

“Scream VI” took third place with $8.4 million in its third weekend, bringing its total thus far to $90.4 million domestic and $139.3 million worldwide. “Creed

III” followed in fourth with $8.4 million. Michael B. Jordan’s sequel is up to $140.9 million domestic.

The weekend’s other new releases were more modest.

Zach Braff’s “A Good Person,” starring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman, opened on 530 theaters. The MGM release grossed $834,000. IFC Films’ “The Lost King,” with Sally Hawkins and Steve Coogan, debuted with $575,000 in 753 locations.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. “John Wick: Chapter 4,” $73.5 million.

2. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” $9.7 million.

3. “Scream VI,” $8.4 million.

4. “Creed III,” $8.4 million.

5. “65,” $3.3 million.

6. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” $2.4 million.

7. “Cocaine Bear,” $2.1 million.

8. “Jesus Revolution,” $2 million.

9. “Champions,” $1.5 million.

10. “Avatar: The Way of Water,” $1.4 million.

Vegetable seed starting basics

With spring ocially here, you may be thinking that you should be planting your vegetables shortly. Yet you still have some time before planting these in the soil as the soil temperatures are not warm enough and we have not had our last frost. This is a good time to determine whether you will start your vegetables seeds indoors this year.

To start with, not all vegetables need to be started indoors. Cool season crops like carrots, beets, radishes, spinach, and others are better direct-seeded into the soil. What this means is that you

need to wait until the end of April until directly planting these into the soil. Some like broccoli or kale do need to be started indoors. Further, most of our warm season like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant would need to be started indoors. There’s also a group that could be either such as cucumber, squash, and pumpkins. You could directly sow these into the ground the end of May or you could start them indoors 3-4 weeks ahead of time.

In determining when to start your seeds indoors, you need to know when to plant the transplants. Most seed packets will list when you need to plant, whether as a

transplant or direct seeded, based on the last frost. For instance, the packet may say 3-4 weeks before or 2 weeks after the last frost. We typically see the last frost in our area as mid-May.

Now that you know when the plant will be planted, work back 6-8 weeks which is the recommended time it takes to start your transplants. You could further add an additional 1-2 weeks as it may take this long for the seed to germinate. So if my tomato plants will be planted the end of May, I should start my seeds indoors the first week of April. I could also start them this week.

Your equipment for seed starting will

The End of More: Perspective

The book The End of More oers a stark vision of what lies ahead in terms of energy depletion and a corresponding reduction in consumption which the authors feel the world’s population is ill-prepared to accept. Whether the future envisioned by Norman Pagett and Josephine Smit ever comes to fruition remains to be seen.

It is not a future the vast majority of us would welcome. However its major

premise is one that has gained increasing visibility outside the scope of the major media. The nonending environmental destruction of the planet is based on the concept that the world economy can expand continuously. The vision of endless economic growth has expanded in the minds of some to include visions of colonizing the Moon and eventually Mars. The endless pursuit of more people, fuel and food in the name of progress and prosperity while ignoring its consequences cannot be sustained indefinitely, according to its authors.

In dramatic contrast to the authors’ views is the one oered by economist Keynes who was active in the 1930s. He envisioned a time in the future that society would be have so much wealth that none of us would have to work. Instead of working we would be free to pursue our personal interests while being well fed, clothed and sheltered and have our medical needs met without have to work for a living. While a few people have the financial resources to live that way, the vast majority of people continue to labor in the economy.

While we have yet to reach the blissful state envisioned by Keynes, many people fortunate to live in western Europe and North American have lived well in contrast to those living in earlier times. A friend who lived through the depression of the 1930s described her experience as a slow descent into living with less. This is what has been happening in the U.S. economy as wages have not kept up with the rate of inflation.

Yet the higher living standards of some countries of Europe and the United States continue to draw immigrants seeking to escape desperate living conditions in their home countries. To those who wish retain the benefits of our current economy, the expectation exists that a combination of money and the skills of scientists, inventors and engineers will

include seed starting mix, light source, and well-draining containers. The seed starting mix will provide enough nutrients for those 6-8 weeks and you should not need to add any fertilizer. Seed starting requires 14-16 hours of light. Your overheard lights or a sunny window are not going to provide enough light for your seedlings. Finally, consider your container as the plants may look small now but in 6-8 weeks they will look very dierent.

Next week, I’ll go into more details on the equipment.

Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

come to our aid and redesign society in such a way to enable us to continue to pursue endless economic growth.

Others like Pagett and Smit present the case that the continued economic growth we have known is unlikely to rekindle what has been describe as the American dream. Their pessimistic outlook is based on the declining availability of oil and the damage wrought by the excesses of current human existence. The End of More is well written but presents a pessimistic view of where we are headed.

The End of More oers no happy ending for readers. It was updated in 2016 and fails to take into account the impacts of addressing energy and climate actions which have gained momentum since then. Whether these eorts lead to a more sustainable society remains to be seen. Other authors such as Nate Hagens suggest that an appropriate response to more dicult times is to work with others to strengthen the local community and develop the skills and interests that lead to a less materialistic life.

While many such eorts already are in this area they always need more volunteers and financial contributions to support their eorts. One worthwhile effort closely aligned with what we believe to be important is the work of Sustain Rockford.

Notice is given of the death of Danny D. Beghtel. Letters of Office were issued on March 15, 2023 to Gage D. Beghtel, at 2116 Williams Street, Des Moines, IA 50317, and Gabriella Henthorn, at 2300 Mortensen Road, Unit 20, Ames, IA 50014, who are the legal representatives of the estate. The attorney for the estate is James P. Hursh of Guyer & Enichen, P.C., 2601 Reid Farm Road, Suite B, Rockford, IL 61114. Claims against the estate may be filed on or before September 22, 2023, that date being at least six (6) months from the date of first publication, or within three (3) months from the date of mailing or delivery of Notice to creditors, if mailing or delivery is required by Section 5/18-3 of the Illinois Probate Act, 1975 as amended, whichever date is later. Notice is given of the death of Danny D. Beghtel, who died February 24, 2023. You are named in the petition as an heir or legatee of the decedent. An Order was entered on March 15, 2023, appointing Gage D. Beghtel and Gabriella Henthorn as independent co-administrators, and granting independent administration of the decedent’s estate. This means that the executor or administrator will not have to obtain court orders or file estate papers in court during probate. The estate will be administered without court supervision, unless an interested person asks the court to become involved.

Under Section 5/28-4 of the Probate Act (Illinois Compiled Statutes, chap. 755, §5/28-4), any interested person may terminate independent administration at any time by mailing or delivering a petition to terminate to the Clerk of the Court. However, if there is a Will which directs independent administration, independent administration will be terminated only if the Court finds there is good cause to require supervised administration; and if the petitioner is a creditor or non-residuary legatee, independent administration will be terminated only if the Court finds that termination is necessary to protect the petitioner’s interest.

In addition to the right to terminate independent administration, any interested person may petition the Court to hold a hearing and resolve any particular question that may arise during independent administration, even though supervised administration has not been requested (Probate Act Section 5/28-5, Illinois Compiled Statutes, chap. 755, §5/28-5). The independent representative must mail a copy of the estate inventory and final account to each interested person and must send notice to or obtain the approval of each interested person before the estate can be closed

Claims against the Estate may be filed on or before September 22, 2023, that date being at least six (6) months from the date of first publication, or within three (3) months from the date of mailing or delivery of Notice to creditors, if mailing or delivery is required by Section 18-3 of the Illinois Probate Act, 1975 as amended, whichever date is later. Any claim not filed by the requisite date stated above shall be barred. Claims against the Estate may be filed in the Office of the Winnebago County Circuit Clerk, Probate Division at the Winnebago County Courthouse, 400 West State Street, Rockford, Illinois, or with the Estate legal representative, or both. Copies of claims filed with the Circuit Clerk’s Office, Probate Division, must be mailed or delivered to the Estate legal representative and to her attorney within ten (10) days after it has been filed.
