National speculation helps ‘get more for the people of Illinois,’ Pritzker says

Governor won’t commit to serving full third term if reelected amid presidential rumors

bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker began his third campaign for governor on Thursday, but much of the buzz around his 2026 campaign announcement focused on 2028.

Pritzker made four stops around the state to launch his campaign, fielding questions about any future interest in the presidency and what is driving him to run for what would be a historic third term. In his final stop in Springfield on Thursday evening, he was toasting personally branded “JBeers” – his own craft beer product he unveiled at least year’s Democratic National Convention – with a group of about 100 people at a small event venue just outside the Capitol and talking about his motivations.

“Every day I’m going to wake up going forward thinking about what I am going to do that’s going to help the people of Illinois,” Pritzker told reporters in Springfield when asked how many years of a third term he would serve. “So that’s the reason I’m running for reelection, it’s why I announced today, it’s what I’m going to do every day going forward no matter what decision I make.”

The 60-year-old Democrat’s national profile has grown significantly over the last year. He was a finalist to be former Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate last July, and weeks later, introduced himself to the country on the stage of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In the months since President Donald Trump took office, Pritzker has

emerged as one of his most vocal critics.

At news conferences throughout the state, Pritzker did not directly commit to serving a full four-year term if he is reelected and sidestepped questions about his rumored White House ambitions.

But while staying tight-lipped about what he thinks about his prospects in the 2028 presidential election, he said any decision he makes about his future would be Illinois-centric.

Speculation shows Pritzker ‘capable and competent’

In the meantime, Pritzker said he believed his inclusion in the national conversation is good for Illinois.

“When I ran for governor in the first place in 2017 and 2018, never, never could I have imagined that anybody would talk about me as the potential vice-presidential nominee or as a candidate for president of the United States,” Pritzker said.

While Republicans have frequently criticized the governor for his tendencies to criticize Trump rather than work with him to Illinois’ benefit, the governor spun his rising national profile as a positive.

“Having the state of Illinois’ leaders viewed as capable and competent and potentially able to run the entire country and being talked about in that way, allows us, I think, to get more for the people of Illinois because there’s an understanding that, you know, maybe in Illinois we’re doing the right things,” he said. “Maybe in Illinois we have leaders that can competently execute on what states really need.”

Pritzker said his experience last summer being vetted for the vice presidency has not played any role in the decisions he has made about his political

career.

Should Pritzker decide to run for president, an announcement would likely come at some point in 2027 during what would be the first year of his third term if he’s reelected.

Pritzker’s goal: ‘Protect’ Illinois and his legacy

Pritzker said at his announcement Thursday that his goal in 2026 is to preserve his legacy and “protect” the story of Illinois that’s been written under his leadership. Pritzker didn’t outline a bold vision for his third term but rather pledged to build off what he has already accomplished.

He said his third term would focus on grappling with artificial intelligence, addressing the rising cost of living, continued spending on infrastructure and growing the state’s economy.

Pritzker reflected on his decision to seek reelection despite growing challenges facing the state.

“I don’t shy away from a fight, and we’re going to have to protect the people of Illinois,” Pritzker told reporters in Springfield. “And I feel like we’re in a moment when backing away from public service when things are hard doesn’t feel right. So that’s one of the reasons I chose to run for reelection.”

Pritzker was asked whether he would have run had Trump not been elected last year.

“I think I would, but I have to say that in this moment, it feels like walking away is the wrong thing to do given who is in the White House and given how this administration is attacking people all across this country,” Pritzker said.

The governor must also choose a new running mate as Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton has decided to run for U.S. Senate. Pritzker said he will choose one by the end of July so his campaign can start circulating nominating petitions in early August. Pritzker said in Chicago that he is looking for someone with enough experience to take over as governor if required.

Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, may be an early front-runner for the job. Pritzker specifically referred to GordonBooth as qualified at a stop in East Peoria on Thursday when asked about potential running mates, WGLT reported. The assistant House majority leader has been in the General Assembly since 2009.

Vatican

Pope Leo XIV marks feast day as Vatican launches campaign to help erase its $57-68 million deficit

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Sunday celebrated a special feast day traditionally used by the Catholic Church to drum up donations from the faithful, with the Vatican under the first American pope rolling out a new campaign to urge ordinary Catholics to help bail out the deficit-ridden Holy See.

Leo celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, marking the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, during which he gave the pallium woolen stole to 54 new archbishops. He thanked donors who have contributed to the church, using the language of the publicity campaign to say their financial support was a sign of union with his young pontificate.

In churches around the world, Masses on the June 29 feast day often include a special collection for Peter’s Pence, a fund which both underwrites the operations of the central government of the Catholic Church and pays for the pope’s personal acts of charity.

Vatican American-style fundrais- ing pitch

With a promotional video, poster, QR code and website soliciting donations via credit card, PayPal, bank transfer and post office transfer, the Vatican is betting this year that an American-style fundraising pitch under the Chicagoborn Leo will do more to help keep the Holy See bureaucracy afloat and erase its 50 million to 60 million euro ($57-68 million) structural deficit.

The video features footage of Leo’s emotional first moments as pope, when he stepped out onto the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica and later choked up as he received the fisherman’s ring of the papacy. With an evocative soundtrack in the background, the video superimposes a message, available in several languages, urging donations to Leo via the Peter’s Pence collection.

“With your donation to Peter’s Pence, you support the steps of the Holy Father,” it says. “Help him proclaim the Gospel to the world and extend a hand to our brothers and sisters in need. Support the steps of Pope Leo XIV. Donate to Peter’s Pence.”

Pope thanks donors

At the end of his noon blessing Sunday, Leo used the same language about his first steps to say the Peter’s Pence fund

is “a sign of communion with the pope and participation with his Apostolic Ministry.”

“From the heart, I thank those who with their gifts are supporting my first steps as the successor of St. Peter,” he said.

The fund has been the source of scandal in recent years, amid revelations that the Vatican’s secretariat of state mismanaged its holdings through bad investments, incompetent management and waste. The recent trial over the Vatican’s bungled investment in a London property confirmed that the vast majority of Peter’s Pence contributions had funded the Holy See’s budgetary shortfalls, not papal charity initiatives as many parishioners had been led to believe.

Between the revelations and the COVID-19 pandemic, which closed churches and canceled out the traditional pass-the-basket collection on June 29, Peter’s Pence donations fell to 43.5 million euros in 2022 — a low not seen since 1986 — that was nevertheless offset the same year by other investment income and revenue to the fund.

Donations rose to 48.4 million euros (about $56.7 million) in 2023 and hit 54.3 million euros (nearly $63.6 million) last year, according to the Peter’s Pence annual report issued last week. But the fund incurred expenses of 75.4 million euros ($88.3 million) in 2024, continuing the trend in which the fund is exhausting itself as it covers the Holy See’s budgetary shortfalls.

Vatican faces shortfall in pension fund

On top of the budget deficit, the Vatican is also facing a 1 billion euro (about $1.17 billion) shortfall in its pension fund that Pope Francis, in the months before he died, warned was unable in the medium term to fulfill its obligations.

Unlike countries, the Holy See doesn’t issue bonds or impose income tax on its residents to run its operations, relying instead on donations, investments and revenue generated by the Vatican Museums, and sales of stamps, coins, publications and other initiatives.

For years, the United States has been the greatest source of donations to Peter’s Pence, with U.S. Catholics contributing around a quarter of the total each year.

Vatican officials are hoping that under Leo’s pontificate, with new financial controls in place and an American math major running the Holy See, donors will be reassured that their money won’t be misspent or mismanaged.

“This is a concrete way to support the Holy Father in his mission of service to the universal Church,” the Vatican’s economy ministry said in a press release last week announcing the annual collection and new promotional materials surrounding it.

“Peter’s Pence is a gesture of communion and participation in the Pope’s mission to proclaim the Gospel, promote peace, and spread Christian charity.”

Survivor of Israel’s attack on Iran’s Evin prison describes a ‘slow death’ after 12-day war

BEIRUT (AP) — Sayeh Seydal, a jailed Iranian dissident, narrowly escaped death when Israeli missiles struck Tehran’s Evin Prison, where she was held. She had just stepped out of the prison’s clinic moments before it was destroyed.

The June 23 strikes on Iran’s most notorious prison for political dissidents killed at least 71 people, including staff, soldiers, visiting family members and people living nearby, Iranian judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir said Sunday. In the ensuing chaos, authorities transferred Seydal and others to prisons outside Tehran — overcrowded facilities known for their harsh conditions.

When she was able to call her family several days ago, Seydal pleaded for help.

“It’s literally a slow death,” she said of the conditions, according to a recording of the call provided by her relatives, in accordance with Seydal’s wishes.

“The bombing by the U.S. and Israel didn’t kill us. Then the Islamic Republic brought us to a place that will practically kill us,” she said.

Activists fear Israel’s attacks will lead to crackdown

Iran’s pro-democracy and rights activists fear they will pay the price for Israel’s 12-day air campaign aiming to cripple the country’s nuclear program. Many now say the state, reeling from the breach in its security, has intensified its crackdown on opponents.

Israel’s strike on Evin — targeting, it said, “repressive authorities” — spread panic among families of the political prisoners, who were left scrambling to determine their loved ones’ fates. A week later, families of those who were in solitary confinement or under interrogation still haven’t heard from them.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, a veteran activist who has been imprisoned multiple times in Evin, said that Iranian society, “to get to democracy, needs powerful tools to reinforce civil society and the women’s movement.”

“Unfortunately, war weakens these tools,” she said in a video message to The Associated Press from Tehran. Political space is already shrinking with security forces increasing their presence in the streets of the capital, she said.

Fears of a wave of executions

Many now fear a potential wave of executions targeting activists and politi-

cal prisoners. They see a terrifying precedent: After Iran’s war with Iraq ended in 1988, authorities executed at least 5,000 political prisoners after perfunctory trials, then buried them in mass graves that have never been accessed.

During Israel’s military campaign, Iran executed six prisoners who were sentenced to death before the war.

The Washington-based Human Rights Activists in Iran documented nearly 1,300 people arrested, most on charges of espionage, including 300 for sharing content on social media in just 12 days.

Parliament is fast-tracking a bill allowing greater use of the death penalty for charges of collaboration with foreign adversaries. The judiciary chief called for expedited proceedings against those who “disrupt the peace” or “collaborate” with Israel.

“We know what that means. That means show trials and executions,” said Bahar Ghandehari, director of advocacy and media at the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran.

Prisoners scattered after the strike

Evin Prison, located in an upscale neighborhood on Tehran’s northern edge, housed an estimated 120 men and women in its general wards, as well as hundreds of others believed to be in its secretive security units under interrogation or in solitary confinement, according to Human Rights Activists.

The prisoners include protesters, lawyers and activists who have campaigned for years against Iran’s authoritarian rule, corruption and religious laws including enforcement of Islamic attire for women. Authorities have crushed waves of nationwide protests since 2009 in crackdowns that have killed hundreds and jailed thousands.

The Israeli strikes hit Evin during visiting hours, causing shock and panic.

Seydal, an international law scholar who joined protest movements over the past two decades and has been in and out of jail since 2023, recounted to her family her near-brush with death in the prison clinic. The blast knocked her to the ground, a relative who spoke to Seydal said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Visiting halls, the prosecutor’s office and several prisoner wards were also heavily damaged, according to rights groups and relatives of prisoners. One missile hit the prison entrance, where prisoners often are waiting to be taken

to hospitals or court.

“Attacking a prison, when the inmates are standing behind closed doors and they are unable to do the slightest thing to save themselves, can never be a legitimate target,” Mohammadi said. She was released in December when her latest sentence was briefly suspended for medical reasons.

During the night, buses began transferring prisoners to other facilities, according to Mohammadi and families of prisoners. At least 65 women were sent to Qarchak Prison, according to Mohammadi, who is in touch with them. Men were sent to the Grand Tehran Penitentiary, housing criminals and high-security prisoners. Both are located south of Tehran.

Mohammadi told AP that her immediate fear was a lack of medical facilities and poor hygiene. Among the women are several with conditions needing treatment, including 73-year-old civil rights activist Raheleh Rahemi, who has a brain tumor.

In her call home, Seydal called Qarchak a “hellhole.” She said the women were packed together with no hygiene care and limited food or drinkable water.

“It stinks. Just pure filth,” she said.

“She sounded confused, scared and very sad,” her relative said. “She knows speaking out is very dangerous for her. But also being silent can be dangerous for her.” On Sunday, Sayeh made another call to her family, saying she was briefly taken back to Evin to bring her belongings. The stench of “death” filled the air, her relative quoted her as saying.

The 47-year-old Seydal was first sentenced in 2023. In early 2025, her furlough was canceled, and she was assaulted by security and faced new charges after she refused to wear a chador at the prosecutor’s office.

A brother disappears

Reza Younesi’s father and younger brother, Ali, have been imprisoned at Evin for years. Now the family is terrified because Ali has disappeared.

Ali, a 25-year-old graduate of a prestigious technical university, was serving a 16-year sentence for “colluding to commit crimes against national security.” The sentence, widely criticized by rights groups, was reduced but the Intelligence Ministry launched a new case against him on unknown charges.

Days before the strike on Evin, Ali was dragged out of his ward and taken to an unknown location, according to

his brother.

After the strike, their father, Mir-Yousef Younesi, saw no sign of Ali as he and other prisoners were transferred to the Great Tehran Penitentiary. The father managed to get a call out to his family, in a panic.

Disappearances in Evin are not uncommon. Guards sometimes remove political prisoners from wards for interrogation. In some cases, they are sentenced in secret trials and executed. After the strikes, Swedish-Iranian academic Ahmadreza Djalali, sentenced to death in 2017, was transferred to an undisclosed location, according to Amnesty International, which expressed fear he could be executed.

Reza Younesi said the family lawyer was unable to find any information about his brother or the new charges.

“We are all worried,” he said, speaking from Sweden where he is an associate professor at Uppsala University. “When there is no information from a prisoner, this almost in all cases means that the person is under interrogation and torture.”

‘All hope is gone’

Mehraveh Khandan grew up in a family of political activists. She spent much of her childhood and teen years going to Evin to visit her mother, rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who was imprisoned there multiple times.

Her father, Reza Khandan, was thrown into Evin in December for distributing buttons opposing the mandatory headscarf for women.

Now living in Amsterdam, the 25-yearold Mehraveh Khandan frantically tried to find information about her father after the strike. The internet was cut off, and her mother had evacuated from Tehran. “I was just thinking who might die there,” she said. It took 24 hours before she got word her father was OK.

In a family call later, her father told how he was sleeping on the floor in a crowded cell rife with insects at the Grand Tehran Penitentiary.

At first, she thought the Evin strike might prompt the government to release prisoners. But after seeing reports of mass detentions and executions, “all this hope is gone,” she said.

The war “just destroyed all the things the activists have started to build,” she said.

Even during dry seasons, weeds remain a persistent problem in vegetable gardens. While the lack of rain can eliminate one crucial resource weeds need, some species can still thrive in these challenging conditions. Successful weed control starts with proper identification—knowing which weed species you’re dealing with allows you to choose the most effective management strategies.

Focus your efforts on the first 45 days after planting, when most weed germination and growth occurs. Removing weeds early prevents them from becoming serious problems later in the season. Dry conditions actually work in your favor

Energy & Environment

Weed management in the vegetable Garden

by preventing many weed seeds from germinating in the first place.

The main strategy for vegetable garden weed control involves physical removal using tools or pulling by hand. Remove as much of the weed plant as possible to prevent regrowth, while disturbing the soil minimally. For perennial weeds, you must remove the entire root system, as these plants will return each growing season if roots remain intact. Effective weed management follows a simple principle: eliminate one or more resources that weeds require—sunlight, water, space, and nutrients. This year’s reduced rainfall helps with water limitation, but if you’re hand-watering/using sprinklers or receive heavy rainfall, you may inadver-

tently provide the moisture weeds need to thrive. I know this is something I have seen this week in my home garden following some much-needed downpours. Mulching targets both sunlight and water access, making it highly effective for weed control. Heavy mulch layers using straw, wood chips, cardboard, newspaper, or other materials can suppress most weed species. While hand-removal remains important, mulching provides both short-term and long-term benefits, with some mulches lasting for years. For maximum effectiveness, combine mulching materials by laying cardboard or newspaper as a heavy base layer, then covering with wood chips or seasonal straw.

Areas with established perennial weeds may require more aggressive treatment. Use a trimmer to cut weeds back to soil surface, then cover with heavy tarp or landscape fabric. Remove the tarp after four to six weeks and apply wood mulch, or use landscape fabric that allows you to plant directly through the material. For severely infested growing areas you’re trying to restore, herbicide treatment before installing landscape fabric and mulch may be necessary. Apply this strategy before weed seeds enter the soil, though effectiveness varies depending on the specific weed species involved. Unanticipated escape through a unique landscape

An unplanned event turned into a pleasant evening of cherry picking. My daughter Lin mentioned to us that she was going to pick ripe cherries from a neighbor’s tree which came down during a recent strong wind. She has picked cherries and made a few pies from the tree over the years. Now that the tree was down she wanted to pick cherries and freeze some for later use as well as some now for pies.

My grandson and I volunteered to help with the picking in anticipation of a pie or two for our efforts. It was a pleasant time and we each filled a container with enough cherries for two pies, And of course we enjoyed a piece of cherry pie that Lin made for us as our reward.

It was a simple pleasure that got us free of screen time and brought back memories for each us from our respective childhoods. For me, it was gathering ripe muskmelons from a truck farm. For Lin it was the time she and her brother went with their grandparents to pick berries at a pick it yourself operations, and while they couldn’t pick because they were under the age of 12, they still had fun entertaining themselves. For my grandson it brought back memories of picking strawberries with his parents. It was an intergenerational memory generated from a simple experience.

The next evening my grandson went out and picked another bucket of raspberries growing in our woodland. Since he picked them it was his right to request for another pie which Lin was willing to make.

Another friend of ours decided to create family memories by giving an early inheritance to his children with the understanding that each of them plan and share a family trip including grandparents and their children.

Family trips don’t always go as anticipated and need to carefully planned. I once suggested to a mother concerned that her busy husband was not getting along with their son that they take a family vacation to see some National parks. So they went to the Grand Canyon that summer and she later told me it was a terrible experienced as her husband demanded the entire family walk down and up the canyon at a pace the father maintained. Unfortunately not all family memories are positive ones. A recent report indicates that far too many rescues are needed for people attempting Grand Canyon hikes with having realistic plans for their efforts.

A professor we knew in graduate school who taught short classes on planning family trips to natural areas based his course on how workers in automobile factories evaluated their family summer vacation experiences to unique natural areas.

A very common pattern was for auto workers to describe the pleasure they were experiencing planning and talking about their anticipated family summer vacations. After returning from their vacations many workers indicated it was a terrible experience and they had little interest in going on another one. A common complaint was that tensions arose from trying to see too many places in the time available and the distances involved between sites.

As children we were taught to anticipate what we might see along the way and we turned our observations into listing how many different animals or birds we saw along the way. As new technologies arrived some parents just gave their children electronic devices to distract them from them from the boredom associated with being confined in a vehicle. An important component of family vacations of spending time together should include what one can learn from observations of the landscape along the way.

Recently Lin and I were invited to attend a birthday party of an old friend of mine from high school and we chose to travel along the backroads, of the unglaciated area of southwest Wisconsin and we enjoyed the rolling hills and valleys of the area. It was an afternoon party and we allowed sufficient time for a leisurely trip. Traffic was limited and the trip there was delightful but involved the challenge

of following the changes in the directions of what road to follow.

We were not pressed for time, there was little traffic and we did not encounter any drivers displaying being in a hurry, The only challenge was that the travel route directions available on my daughter’s phone changed as we entered each town along the way.

We had a pleasant visit and met some new people as well as an old friend of mine from high school years. For the return trip we rejoined the speed demon expressway traffic to make it in time for another short social visit who were having a high school graduation party for their daughter. It too was a short but pleasant visit.

Another benefit was the escape from the stress of following the threating international war news. It also brought memories of the weeks Sonia and I escaped the war fears in the news of the sixties from experiencing the pleasures of canoeing, birdwatching and animal observations at the Audubon Camp in Sarona, Wisconsin. Our minds were free to enjoy the moment in nature and create some fine memories for later reflections. Such refreshing escapes remain available to us and others at nearby or distant natural areas. It represents a return to our evolutionary origins. Try an escape to nature and enjoy the time away from the electronic devices and screens dominating our lives.
