Corrupt system, poverty breed arrogant drivers The unwelcome ten-hour sit-down strike of about 3000 tricycles in Dumaguete last Wednesday would not have been, if not for our own corrupt system, and poverty among tricycle stakeholders.

-o0oCorrupt system because many unqualified drivers who ought to be driving push-carts instead of tricycles have been allowed by government to be granted licenses and even granted franchises to operate tricycles.

-o0oWe bet our balls that if all 3000 tricycle driver were to take a random examination for road and driving rules, we doubt if even half of them will pass the test.

Many will fail because they simply lack the knowledge of road and driving rules and yet they are on the road .Why? -o0oThe boom and doom of our tourism industry has partly to do with arrogant and ignorant drivers who simply treat passengers with untold manners of unkindness, arrogance and discourtesy. We are driving our tourists away because of these arrogant and ignorant drivers whom government has allowed to operate through the years.

Compare the progressive advantage of the electric tricycles as compared to the traditional ones. We should have them in Dumaguete.

-o0oAsk any commuter, they will not mind paying P10 minimum in today’s prices if only ALL tricycle drivers are properly educated on road rules and courtesy.

-o0oAs a driver of a public conveyance like a tricycle or taxi, you do not ask nor choose where the passenger is going. Instead, the passenger TELLS you, (not ask your permission) to drive them to their destination.

As driver, you are NOT TO REFUSE any passenger, unless you are attending to a personal necessity.

-o0oThe worst part is that , soaked under the rain, the poor passengers are in many cases, left on the road by arrogant drivers who “choose high paying passengers,” in utter disregard of the law.

-o0oWhy the arrogance among drivers? Because of poverty, more mouths to feed, no population or birth control, children keep coming, a jealous wife, the lure of gambling, illegal drugs, these factors heat up temperaments and the passengers are usually at the receiving end. Poverty. Poor in body and spirit.

-o0oThus an ordinance was passed in 2007 providing that minimum fare of tricycles will go with the flow of gasoline prices. When gas prices went up in 2007 the minimum fare also rose, until it has reached around P9 minimum. And the public obliged because that is the law.

-o0oNow that gasoline prices dipped from p62 to P41 per liter, the riding public now demands a lower minimum, and the law states: P6.50 minimum. And the drivers refused and staged a sit-down strike. Good it lasted only for ten hours because our policymakers To page 3

After his stint in the Lower House, he was invited to run for the Senate by then Pres. Estrada and lost. That was when he decided to retire from politics.

He was a lawyer, and a product of Ateneo de Manila University. He finished his pre-law studies at Silliman University. He was the son of the late Luis and Rosita Romero from Tanjay.

He was raised and educated in Dumaguete city. He was also an accomplished radio commentator in Dumaguete.

During his incumbency he authored several laws of national and local applications. He is best remembered for lighting up the city and the entire second district with sodium lights which until now is preceding the LED mania.

His remains were viewed at the Christ the King chapel in Green Meadows in Quezon City and was interred at the Heritage Park in Taguig last Thursday morning.

He is survived by his wife Menchu and children Lucho, Miko, Cassandra, Lizandro, Rhea, Inna and Migi. The family now resides in Manila.

A Christian pastor lambasted the drivers and operators for staging a strike without formal notice to the public, which almost caused anarchy in the streets especially after some of the protesting drivers tried to coerce or intimidate their fellow members who continued to serve the riding public into joining the strike.

Councilor Antonio Remollo explained that only a few of the 2, 400 tricycle drivers and operators are guilty of the criticisms and lauded the various tricycle associations for trying to police or discipline their ranks.

The earlier we grow on this matter, the better.

For one, I don’t have the explanation but for several years now, I always get sick with fever and physical weariness and fatigue starting New Year’s day. No, it’s not because of over indulgence during the holidays.

Or of “senior moments”. It comes like clock work for several years now. It could be psychologically self- induced or whatever. It’s akin to a regular “pit stop” like some racecar driver who makes quick stops to check his car to win the race. My only consolation is that I don’t get seriously sick, as far as I can recall, the whole year round.

(Knock on wood!!) It’s like getting my dose of physical ailments at this time — in exchange for a whole year of good health. I could not ask for more. ****** PRESIDENTIABLES — As I sat there musing, my thoughts were on the coming presidential elections.

Knowing a bit about him, my sixth sense tells me he will go for it if there’s a good chance he will make it. His political genes will compel him to. This is not to mention some clear clarion call to duty that public servants like him cannot just totally ignore. ****** In the meantime, Vice President Jojo Binay is still the front-runner by a mile, inspite of his travails. Sen. Grace Poe is being groomed while Secretary Mar Roxas is still the candidate-in-waiting of the formidable administration machine. Senator “Bongbong” Marcos, meanwhile, is starting to make waves with the much touted “solid north” that is no longer just limited in the “north” but already penetrating all over the country.

I know Digong charts his political course through the time-tested political compass: surveys. So he will look at the survey numbers by mid 2015. If the numbers will be viable by then, he will go. Otherwise, he will “pass”.

The Diocese of Dumaguete and Silliman University two dominant catholic and protestant institutions of Negros island have just forged an agreement to co-manage a novel project, which many past Christian institutions may have not done. Both institutions have agreed to hold a joint inter-faith concert: the formation of a system that will raise funds to take care of retired, ailing, old, sick priests and pastors who all their lives have ministered and taken care of the spiritual needs of their respective flocks as good shepherds. Now in old age, these ministers of God need our help.

Not only that the common fund raised by these two institutions will fund joint undertakings that espouse the common social advocacies of both the Diocese and the University.

f ter having been postponed because of typhoon Ruby last December, the f irst Social NetWorth Series f or 2015 will push through this Monday, January 26 at Silliman University spearheaded by the Mulat Pinoy-Kabataan News Network (MPKNN) of Probe Productions, Inc. The half-day forum on Monday starts at 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Silliman Hall and will provide discussions on issues close to the hearts of young people, like population and development, cyber bullying, teen relationships, unwanted teen pregnancies, drug abuse, and the like. The panelists, all experts in their fields, hope to come up with a consolidated view on how the youth can better address these concerns with the help of mass media.

The partnership between Mulat Pinoy and schools or universities in the country dates back a number of years ago when the need to bring the concerns of the youth to the proper authorities or experts was f elt.

Through the stories produced on video by the youths themselves, these

were addressed by the experts, thereby, putting a seal of authority to what is expected of them.

In 2014 alone, for example, out of the number of stories produced by the youth reporters in the country, eight stories were identified as those that MPKNN “cared about.” As Regina Layug Rosero, project director, said: “It is our way of seeing beyond virality and, instead, focus on what is important to us and our readers.”

Through social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), the youth reporters shared stories and their thoughts on

body image, genderbased discrimination and crimes, and responsible online sharing or netiquette. “We called out cultural biases, and recognized initiatives in youth participation and development work,” Rosero added.

The Mulat Pinoy likewise celebrated victories like the launch of the 2014 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study, its fourth, in February and the passage of the Reproductive Health Law in April. Rosero also said that even while the team rejoiced over these happy events, at the same time, they were made aware and were quick to point out “the small battles people face every day on the streets, on the Internet, and in their homes.” She

further said that these are challenging times that adults and the youth share together in varying degrees.

Because news coverage is still part of their mandate, Mulat Pinoy also worked as the official social media coverage team for several important events in 2014, including the 7 th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights in January, the World Population Day in July, the first Digital Strategies for Development Summit in October, and Town Hall for World AIDS Day celebration in December.

We need to pray and offer a lot of sacrifices for this event that surely will have a significant impact on our lives. The theme is most relevant, but ironically, it is often taken for granted. As a result, many of us are not aware of the increasingly complicated duties and responsibilities in that crucial aspect of our life. In its working paper, called Lineamenta, the bishops are asked to highlight “the need for mercy in responding to

We can pray for them, and we can think of ways to help them. Jesus loved the whole world, even though the world was rebellion against God. Jesus asks us to follow his example by loving our enemies. Grant your enemies the same respect and rights that you desire for yourself.

JCD, PC Priests often ask me what they can do at the parish level to promote Humanae Vitae and Natural Family Planning. What must first be established is the importance of this task. I firmly believe that if priests inspired their parishioners to do just two things, most everything else they want to do with them and for them would be significantly easier. These two things are: 1. promoting Eucharistic Adoration

2. promoting fidelity to the Church’s teaching on sexuality.

Catholics who do both are generally receptive to all the teachings of the Church and much inclined to be generous with their time, talents, and money in various apostolic activities. They are likely to have happier marriages as well, and that brings an abundant number of blessings on the family, the Church and society. If pastors only knew how the Faith and happiness of their flock would increase by engaging in Eucharistic Adoration and in avoiding fornication, contraception, sterilization, adultery, and immoral reproductive technologies, they would work hard to find the best ways to promote Church teaching in these areas.

A physician friend of mine told me of a conference of Catholic physicians who at one time did abortions and prescribed contraceptives where each individual spoke of what had led to his or her conversion. She said over 99% said a priest had confronted them about the incompatibility of what they were doing with their Catholic faith, and that this conversation had led them to stop doing abortions and prescribing contraceptives.

She said the Catholic physicians whom she knows who continue to prescribe contraceptives have been told by a priest that it is morally permissible for them to do so.

Priests make all the difference! If priests speak to the Catholic physicians in their parishes, they have the opportunity to convert their soul, to have an enormous influence on his or her fellow doctors and patients and a powerful effect on the parish. If the Catholic physicians in the parish are known not to prescribe contraceptives, that news gets out and is a great witness to the other parishioners.

has to look f or work abroad. Young couples tie the knot without a clear idea of what a lif etime commitment means and requires. They often base their love on very perishable and expirable foundations, and not on God’s love. In fact, many do not know that human love has to be rooted on divine love.

Again, with the new developments around especially in the field of technology, more division within the family, rather than greater unity, is observed. The gaps are not anymore generational, cultural or social. They are becoming more personal and individualistic.

It’s, of course, good to note that some people are f orming private groups where mutual help is extended to promote more family life and harmony. They, for example, monitor developments that have disturb-

What we should not forget is that the family is not just any kind of collection of people. It is supposed to reflect the inmost life of God who is one yet a trinity of persons in an eternal relation of knowing and loving. The family is not only human. It’s meant to be divine too.

I like to keep myself active and productive, doing 3 things or more at a time. It annoys the heck out of my husband. I also am not able to sleep well.

I sleep maybe 1-4 hours at a time, and it usually takes me a couple of hours to fall back to sleep until it’s time to get ready for work in the morning.

I’ve recently decided, that rather than be frustrated with myself that I’m unable sleep, I get up when I wake in the middle of the night and do something. Reading and making rosaries, even cooking, have been popular go-to activities.

In 2010, from his wheelchair and bedside, he started a whole new apostolate with a blogsite called pedrocalungsod where he shared his homilies and his prayers. He shared many international dialogues, giving the breadth of views and depth of reflection.

Is it because Singapore has a gross national savings equivalent to 46% or almost half of the value of the total goods and services of its economy and Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand about a third of the same? Inf ormatively, the Philippines save only 20% of its national income. Moreover, these

countries above invest an average of 25% or a fourth of these savings, while this country is struggling to invest a measly one-sixth or only 15 % of its GDP. What God promises is abundant life, not superabundance in things. As Paul puts it, “Not that I complain of want; for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content.”

Like has been said, ‘they send a man to the moon, but cannot solve crime on earth’. The Roman Government at one time was a powerful Nation but fail in their selfishness and pride. The Book of Romans in the Bible states in Chapter 1 and Verse 22 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools” Vs. 21 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened” Fool is a strong word meaning according to popular dictionary ‘a person who acts unwisely; deceive so as to cause to appear foolish’. Many people only believe they have been told. They close their minds to the Bible and refuse to read it. I’dsay, ‘a person is foolish that will work hard all his or her life and provide for their families, and yet cannot show their children how to go to heaven’ You might think that is insignificant or unimportant but do you know where you will go when you die. There are other big coal -fired plants being built now like Ayala’s GN Power plant in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte and Mr. Ramon Ang’s power plant now rising in Malita, Davao Occidental. There are other projects elsewhere. Power self-sufficiency is a MUST for Mindanao’s sustained growth. ******* MILF CAN HELP— As I see things today, the AFP is holding its punches perhaps fearing that an allout offensive against BIFF, including the MILF bad guys, will endanger the peace process. Today, with a peace agreement already signed and sealed, MILF can voluntarily cooperate and step aside to help the AFP deal with the BIFF and other anti-peace elements. It may be good to deal with those peace disrupters this early while we are working out the peace mechanics . For one thing, this will also put a test on the MILF and help clear some lingering suspicions that they are playing a “bad cop good cop” game with the BIFF as their orchestrated “bad cop”. ******* FORMULA FOR JOY — I recall reading somewhere the arithmetical formula of achieving joy or HAPPINESS. It is EXPECTATIONS divided by DELIVERY equals level of HAPPINESS. Try this out. If one EXPECTS P100 pesos but what is DELIVERED is only P50 pesos, he is only ONE-HALF HAPPY. However, if he expects only P50 pesos ( not P100) and he receives the SAME amount of P50 pesos, he is FULL HAPPY. Raising the EXPECTATIONS factor will radically change the equation.

That would have been a rare display of political will and maturity, of many of the city officials, but they failed again, to no surprise to many.
