The people have spoken T

he people of Dumaguete have spoken. The city has reelected its mayor, and elected a new vice mayor. The people have also voted for nine coalition members to the city council and one independent candidate. The city council has now four lady councilors. The Legislative body has seven lawyers including the reelected mayor and the new vice mayor. The significant note about Dumaguete voting populace is that they have defy the culture of traditional party voting and has opted to elect an independent vice mayor. This speaks of the character of the city populace in Dumaguete who manifestly think independently from traditional party politics. Most significantly the people gave more votes

ardly has the smoke of the last election simmered down, when the positioning for the next elections of 2022 is being felt in whispers in political nooks and corners. For instance, those elected to a higher positon now will strive to move up to the next higher position even as they will be plotting their poltical agenda in the next 12 months. We are not saying that political maverick Allan Cordova who retook the vice mayorship from GG Esmena is eyeing for the mayor ship in the next political exercise. Of course he will say that much depends on the political climate, without discounting the possibility. But mayor Remollo will never allow Cordova to win over him in the next polls. Mayor Remol lo and Governor Degamo who are indirect silent political allies now could discuss the possible switch to each other’s positions in 2022. Or who knows Ipe Remollo

might be thinking of congress and Sagarbarria might take a crack at city hall, facing facng a formidable opponent, a possible rival in the person of independent vce vice mayor Cordova. For indeed, in politics there are no permanent friends , only permanent interests. When President Duterte exits after 2022, he could be thinking of his presidential daughter sarah to take his place. But will she be acceptable to the people as the father? Will there be any more formidable opponent? The opposition Otso derecho was slaughtered in the last May polls. New national scenarios could put them back to life. Whichever way it will be, people will already be positioning themselves for the next political exercise. Beause there are people who desperately want to get elected rather than to serve. When will the people repudiate them!

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is proclaimed in the race for mayorship in the capital city of Dumaguete by Schools Division Supt. Evangel Luminarias and City Election Officer Juvenal Tuale at the session hall early Tuesday morning, in the presence of his family, supporters and political allies. to the reelected governor at 50,158 votes in contrast to the winning mayor who only got over 39,380 votes. This means that there were 10,778 voters who under voted, by voting only for the governor and nobody else in the local level. We will not be surprised if the mayor and the governor who are political allies, when their term expires will opt to exchange places. But the new vice mayor whom we believe has still his sights for the mayorship of the city, might end up colliding with the incumbent who ironically was a former ally. These are all possible scenarios for 2022 whose election might already be in the radars of the some incumbents. So congratulations to the elected city officials of Dumaguete and the winners are: reelected Mayor Ipe Remollo 39,380 votes; city vice mayor-elect Alan Gel. Cordova, 29,345; Councilors Tolentino, Sagarbarria, Arbas, Bandal, Lentorio, Perdices, Elmaco (lone independent), Ramon, Patrimonio, and Erames.

For comment s: email to dejarescobingo@yahoo.com or boholrd@mozcom.com AND NOW, THE NATIONAL SCENE WHILE THE SENATORIAL Race turned out as expected, fresh new faces emerged and saw the end of three major political dynasties which jolted the consciousness of Metro Manilans. While the Abalos in Mandaluyong, the Cayetanos in Taguig and the Aguilar-Villar (Las Pinas) family dynasties held sway in the May 13 polls, the Estradas of San-Juan and Manila, the Eusebios of Pasig and in a manner of speaking- the Binays of Makati, crushed under the weight of their decades of political lordship to give way to fresh faces. In Pasig, the youngish son of actress Coney Reyes and Vic Sotto defeated the Eusebio iconic heir -after 30 years of familial rule- bringing an epitome of an idealistic, non-traditional politician to the Pasig throneVico Sotto. Manila Vice-Mayor and ragsto-power former actor Isko Moreno apparently led his former political patron - the aging ex-president Erap Estrada into an abrupt political pasture- by soundly beating him. In the meantime, the Zamora political family also trounced their Estrada rivals to reclaim the area dominated by the Estradas

since 1968. Sagacious political analysts had postulated that when a political dynasty grows so big that it finally runs out of opponentsthey eventually fight each other. As in the case of the powerful Binay family in Makati where incumbent mayor Abby Binay defeated former mayor and younger brother Junjun for mayor in an acrimonious family feud that even ended with a shouting match even inside a church forum. Another casualty in the family intramurals was their own Binay father- the former vice president Jojo Binay who was knocked off politically by veteran pol Kid Pena for Makati Congressman. Meanwhile, based on the partial official tally of the Comelec, the presidential allies romped off with the majority of the 12- seat senate slate. Four PDP-Laban ( the president’s party) is poised to get four men in Bong Go, Bato de la Rosa, Francis Tolentino; the Nacionalista Party (3): Cynthia Villar, Pia Cayetano, and Imee Marcos. Others have one senator possibly in the running: LDP- Sonny Angara, NPCLito Laid, Lakas- Bong Revilla, UNANancy Binay. Remarkably, it is only Independent Grace Poe- without a party and without a presidential endorsement who made it and made it Big in the latest count- No. 2 behind Villar. Marking - perhaps-Poe’s possible return to a higher office in 2022? So on the national front, it was like as predicted -with some surprises along the way. Let us wait for the final Senate count with the LP ‘s Bam Aquino and Mar Roxas and the siblings JV and Jinggoy Estrada within striking distance. YOUR WELLNESS

O

fcourse, after the elections we can expect feelings of highs and lows among us. The winners and their followers understandably are joyful. And just as understandably also, the losers and their followers are in some of kind of mourning mode. Let’s just leave it at that. But let’s always remember that we are all brothers and sisters, children of God. Irrespective of our differences and conflicts, mistakes and offenses, we are meant to love each other always. Let’s avoid becoming gloating winners and sore losers, marked with anger and hatred, depression, resentment, thoughts of revenge and the like. These actuations are actually inhuman, let alone, unchristian. If we truly are Christians, we would know how to love one another not only in spite of, but also because of our differences and conflicts. That’s how Christ treats all of us. He came to love everyone, including those who were against him, those who crucified him. He at least offered them mercy. We have to learn from the example of Christ. He is the “way, the truth and the life” for us. He knows what is to be man. He knows our strength and weaknesses, and he knows how to handle them. He is showing us how to deal with our human condition

here on earth, weakened as it is by our sin. And his example is marked with detachment not only from his views, from his teachings, but also from his life. Yes, he was clear and precise about what is right and wrong, what is good and evil. He was very concerned about the cause of justice and the rule of law. But in the end it is mercy, the summit of charity, that prevails. We have to understand that Christ came to save all of us, and not just a few, the supposedly good ones. Precisely, he paid more special attention to the ‘lost sheep.’ He went to the extent of teaching us that we love even our enemies, and he acted out that teaching by accepting death on to page 7

Except for the national level (the senatorial slate) where some senators’ votes are still being tallied, most winning candidates have been proclaimed. Congratulations to the reelectionist Mayor of the City, Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo and to his winning slate. Likewise, congratulations to the reelectionist Governor Degamo and Vice Governor Macias who have been given fresh mandate by the people of Negros Oriental who continue to remain confident that through your leadership the best interest of the province and people will always be top priority. Population problems

T

he population of the world is grow-ing very fast and approximately 800,000 people go to bed hungry every night. Sometimes in order to help curb escalating population growth a church or organization might advocate abstinence —- not having sex. It’s not a very popular idea because almost everybody likes sex. And obviously that approach is not working. When you compare America to Europe the people have sex more often in Europe than America. Yet conversely they have fewer problems with venereal disease (STDs) and unplanned pregnancies. They also have fewer abortions. ( FYI there are approximately 1 million abortions per year in the Philippines, with 100 to 200 thousand women being hospitalized every

year for unsafe abortions) At the beginning of America there were some fundamentalist religions which thought that sex was bad because it was a pleasure — and that God didn’t want us to have sexual pleasure, especially outside of marriage. ( Actually they were so strict they didn’t want people to enjoy sex within the marriage as well). This resulted in people not

Scientific research abroad shows that only 30% of how we age can be attributed to genes the remaining 70% is determined by our lifestyle choice. Definitely, we can choose to be healthier seniors, and it’s never too late. Let us enumerate some pleasing facts that can help us debunk many popular myths about aging: ·Only a small percentage of old people get Alzheimer’s disease. Seniors can help prevent dementia and the loss of mental function by stimulating the brain with simple physical, mental and social exercises that challenge the memory. ·You can be healthy up to your last day. A LOVING GOD “T

hose who obey my commandment are the one who love. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them.” John

14:21 Jesus said that his followers show their love for him by obeying him. Love is more than lovely words; it is commitment and conduct. If you love Christ, then prove it by obeying what he says in his Word.

ll things whatever the Father has are mine;therefore I said that he takes of mine, and will declare it to you. Today’s promise is at the very heart of the gospel message. All that belongs to the Father belongs to Jesus, and all that belongs to Jesus belongs to us because we are one with Him. The Amplified Bible says John 16:15 this way... Everything that the Father has is Mine. That is what I meant when I said that He [the Spirit] will take the things that are Mine and will reveal (declare, disclose, transmit) it to you. (AMP) It is the Holy Spirit who now lives in us that reveals, declares, discloses and transmits all that the Father has given to Jesus...to us as well. The more that we meditate on this simple promise, the more it will transform our thought life and align us with our true destiny as beloved children of the living God. In His high priestly prayer of John 17, Jesus makes a profound statement when praying to His Heavenly Father... I in them, you in me. (NIV) Colossians 1:27 says... Christ in you, the hope of glory. May this revelation become very real to us. Because of the finished work of the cross, we are now one with Christ and co-heirs of His glorious inheritance. (Romans 8:15-17) May faith rise up in our hearts today to simply believe that this is the gospel truth and the reason why Jesus died for us.

M

aturity,” says the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “is the condition, or state, of being fully developed.” However, the word is often used so loosely that it flaps like a kid’s shirttail in the breeze. Michael Drury says, “If you are mature, you are presumed to be happy, secure, married, well-liked and something called “adjusted.” If you aren’t mature, you are incorrigible, defective or warped— and heaven help you.” A newspaper columnist defined maturity as follows: “Maturity is patience. It is the willingness to give up immediate pleasure in favor of the long term gain. Maturity is perseverance, the ability to sweat out a project or a situation in spite of heavy opposition and discouraging setbacks. “Maturity is the capacity to face unpleasantness and frustration, discomfort and defeat, without complaint or collapse. Maturity is humility. It is being big enough to say, ‘I was wrong.’ And when right, the mature person need not experience the satisfaction of saying, ‘I told you so.’ “Maturity is the ability to make a decision and stand by it. The immature spend their lives exploring endless possibilities, then they do nothing. Maturity means

Love... (Cimagala) from page 6 the cross. Our relation with one another should reflect this kind of attitude. As St. Paul would put it in his Letter to the Romans, “Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fullness of the law.” (13,10) This does not mean that justice is done away with. Love always upholds and perfects justice. It is just that a loveinspired justice is not one where the mistake of one party is corrected by another mistake by way of a purely punitive kind of justice. Such kind of justice is not real justice, the justice that is meant for us, given our dignity as children of God. A love-inspired justice also has its punitive aspect, but of the kind that heals a person of his defect, corrects his mistake and restores his real dignity as a child of God. It’s not just punishing a guilty person for the sake of punishing alone. This love-inspired justice, I am afraid, is not yet

known, much less, lived by a great majority of the people today nor reflected in our legal and judicial systems. It is the kind of justice that may appear at first sight as unfair to the innocent party, since he appears to suffer more than the guilty party. But this is the example of Christ. This is the kind of justice Christ is showing us to follow and live. This is how he resolved the injustice we committed against God. He was made to suffer and did not complain. He just bore everything, showing us how precious we are to him. We need to do some drastic adjustments in our understanding of justice and charity. It will obviously require the grace of God, our identification with Christ. It will involve a lot of effort, willingness to suffer, detachment from the things of this world and even of our life, magnanimity and a sporting spirit.

sults of the recently held job fair in the city. Obviously, there was some kind of disconnect somewhere. There is an urgent need to match jobs with the skill set of job seekers. When people partner and create synergy, the people will benefit; the city will flourish and grow faster and better. A close team work and collaboration among the education sector, government agencies and industries will pave the way for a closer matching of jobs with the job seekers’ skill set. They must get together to plan out what jobs are needed for the city, the province, the regions and the country to move forward. Firstly, DOLE could come up with 5-10 year projection of labor trends to serve as guides for students and parents. This projection is based on what the local, regional and national to page 9

This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Allies of LUPAD honor the victors

Newly elected city officials led by Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo pose with the Lupad Dumaguete volunteers after the brief proclamation ceremony, Tuesday. In photo with Mayor Remollo are Councilors Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, Edgar Lentorio, Michael Bandal, Karissa Tolentino-Maxino and Joe Kenneth Arbas. The volunteers served in various capacities to ensure that logistics, transportation and after care are addressed at every rally and house-to-house sorties since the campaign period started.

economy demand. Then, once the jobs are identified, the education sector could then help shepherd the young people to those potential jobs and provide the necessary trainings and education to meet the competency needed. When these are done, DOLE may then organize well planned-out job fair that can attract the most qualified to fill the job vacancies. Unless, there is close collaboration among government agencies, the school system and the employers (the various industries), we would expect more failed job fairs in the future.

of couples living together, getting their situation regularized upon receiving the sacrament of matrimony. The same thing happened in Tolong: no matter how much I inculcated in them the moral truth, some couples persisted (in common-law unions). Even if they might be poor and had nothing to pay the requisite fees, I offered my services gratis. It is enough that those couples might regularize their marriage and live as God wills. Directly willed abortion, the use of abortifacients, sterilization, and contraception are wrong in themselves. They are wrong not because the Church forbids them; the Church forbids them because they are morally wrong. 4. The Church teaches the need for responsible parenthood. This means, among other things, that couples should bring into the world generously the children whom they can raise up as good human beings, but they should seek to bring into the world only those they can raise up as good human beings. 5. The Church advocates Natural Family Planning as the only morally acceptable way of practicing responsible procreation. 6. The Church rejects the contraceptive mentality, i.e., the attitude that selfishly avoids the procreation of off-

spring solely because the couple do not want to bear the responsibility that comes with having a child. To be continued

LET THE BIBLE SPEAK: New Testament Bible Baptist Church located in Pulantubig Near Mag Say Say Elementary School in the Captain T. Amores Estate. We would like to invite you to our Services each Sunday at 9 a.m. and again at 4:30 p.m. Also, we have a Wednesday Night Bible Study at 6:30 p.m. For Information Ring 09059593638. We should consider what the death of Christ means to the world and each individuals. Sin brought death in the Garden of Eden. A scripture states clearly “the soul that Sinneth, it shall surely die”. Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death..” It took a Death of a perfect person to redeem us from our sins. I Peter 1:19-20 “But with The precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained (God’s foreknowledge) before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you” Vs. 21 “Who by him do believe in God, that raised him from the dead…. That your faith and hope might be in God” the death of Christ is a fact and believed in most religions. I Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God…” Many Churches and people do not connect the death of Christ with the re-surrection but in Romans 1:4 “And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” Jesus Christ was Emmanuel according to Matthew 1:23 “… they shall call his name Emmanuel which being interpreted is, God with us” His death on the cross was prophesied or predicted by the prophets in the Old Testament. Isaiah 53 is a strong chapter speaking of His death. A person must believe in the blood that was shed on that cross to go to heaven. There is forgiveness in that blood. A person must be willing to humble themselves and realize they are sinner and need to go to the Cross. Adanza was ranked 3rd with 57, 443 while Jack Raymond was ranked 1st with 92, 092 votes along with Popoy Renacia, ranked 2nd with 67, 248. His breakaway maverick top councilor lawyer Alan Gel Cordova defeated coalition bet Franklin GG Esmena Jr for city vice mayor, with a slim 2,526 majority scoring 29,345 as against GG’s 26,891.

Remollo is an accomplishsed corporate lawyer in Manila circles and has major links with funding sources from t he Malacanang to the national agencies who are mostly his former Ateneo law school mates, and corporate law practice buddies. In some barangays, Remollo garnered as high as 69% to 81% of the vote cast namely: Bantayan, Bunao, Daro, Cantil-e, Looc, Motong, Piapi, Poblacion 8 and Talay. The staff headed by Ma’am Gima are just wonderful folks. To contact the library, call 4210074.

It will not come as a surprise if Cordova will run as mayor against Remollo in the next 2022 local presidential polls. REmollo has the majority councilors in the sanggunian as part of his coalition forces. Cordova’s three Lupad allies councilors Tolent ino, Arbas and Bandal supported him over GG Esmena. But Remollos unprecedented track record of the build-build-build mayor will be hard to dislodge, especially his solid funding sources for projects from the national agencies.

New City Vice Mayor

Who HOLDS the Voting power ? There is a big paradox of election in this country. No wonder we are the subject of both praises and ridicule the world over. The good news is we are upholding the tenets of freedom and democracy. The bad news is, we are also the same people who are making a mockery of such freedom. -o0oThe latest is the netflex viral video which circulated worldwide which ridiculed our hard-fought freedom and we did not like it. But the truth was presented in redicule. It must be stopped. -o0oIn Dumaguete , out of 89,193 registered voters, only 60,560 or 65.03% actually voted. Why? Were the 28,632 who did not vote not interested in exercising their rights and duties of suffrage? It is an interesting question to ask because it boils down to the attitude of 35% of our city populace, their indifference, or apathy, or downright ignorance in this University City. Is it safe to say that 35% of our city population simply do not care or simply called— walang paki? -o0oAnother interesting figure is that of the 60,560 who actually voted in Dumaguete, 3,475 voted ONLY for mayor . Moreover, some 57,085 voted for vice mayor; and 37,165 voted only for councilors. IN short, the councillors votes were those coming from close families and supporters of candidates for councillor. They did not care about who will be mayor or vice mayor. That is why they did not bother to vote for the two top city positions…. Interesting. -o0oRemollo missed a few thousand votes because of his soft heart for traffic czar Gilbert whom he returned to the traffic management which virtually eased out Atillo who was actually the action man of the traffic bureau. When Gilbert’s brother ran for mayor, they junked Remollo, and so did Atillo thus Remollo lost close to a thousand votes from the traffic bureau’s sphere of influence. Something has to be done. -o0oBut Ipe also gained a few thousand votes with the unity with the water district influence. Not only that Dumaguete will have two water service providers soon: the Metreo Pack courtesy of the DCWD and the Prime Waters tie up with city hall. Hey, politicians, be sure to pay your water bills on time , unlike the sad pre-Martial Law story of water delinquency. -o0oMeniong Teves , the passionate golfer, virtually “lost” his balls because golfers do not fade away. As a tadpole, he even wrote a book how a traditional politician like him can yet deliver the goods. The man can deliver, that is why so many were envious of his guts. Not guts no glory. -o0o“H” as he is called by his media friends will not be forgotten for his scoops and fair game in good times and bad. Bye “H” your frequent visits to us will not be forgotten. -o0oThe convenient way to reach out to the voters was through a song. And the new comer Rosel Erames made it through by singing with the mayor in a duet. But no more singing in the council sessions. -o0oNow that the market people went with Ablong, the price will be a new modern market in Talay, air-conditioned with escalators. But still open to everyone qualified. The present market will soon have a higher rental. -o0oCan you imagine market stall rental today is the lowest in the world here in Dumaguete :P4 (as in four) pesos a day! Outrageous! Fact is the market earned only P2Million in a year while its comfort rooms earned P4Million in a year. Crazy sense of management.!
